I wanted to ask how I could go about taking a rom.zip (pulled from an RUU) and turn it into a stock rooted rom. The phone flashing would be rooted, of course
And if possible, for that process, is it generic? As in, would it work for any phone/stock rom? Or only shift?

Well it would be stock Shift so unless modded it would only work for the Shift. Not sure what you're trying to do.

Well what I mean is if I took an equivalent rom.zip from the RUU for another device, then I want to be able to follow generally the same process to make it a stock rom that won't compromise root

Good luck with that, it seems like you are doing way too much work for what you are trying to achieve (which I am still a little confused on). Essentially you are trying to port a "stock" ROM from another device, and then rooting it... why go thru all the trouble? That sounds like a headache for no reason. What is the device you are taking the RUU from? Why not just port a rooted stock ROM? Like RemICS for example is basically the stock ROM for the SGS3.

Wait what...noooo thats not what I mean lol
What I'm asking is that lets say I have stock rom.zip for some device, how do I make a rooted version of that rom.zip (no porting, no other mods)
All I want to do is basically be able to reset everything to stock using that rom.zip, but without losing root on the device I'm flashing to
So like this:
Device N's rom.zip > rooted rom.zip for device N > flash rooted rom.zip to device N
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk 2
You want to pull the stock Rom out of an RUU, and use it sort of as a wipe Rom? Does that about sound right ?

If all you wanna do is what I did with the latest ota. Download the RUU.exe and open it to its first screen but don't go forward. Then open a the start menu and go to run. Once at the run box type %temp% and hit enter, then find the location of ROM.zip and move it out to the Desktop and close the RUU.exe. now inside the ROM.zip are a few images the RUU uses to flash, so now your gonna wanna take the boot.img and system.img and place them in dsixda kitchens original update folder, then open the dsixda kitchen in cmd and setup a working folder from a ROM and choose the boot.img and system.img. once that's done use the options to add root and busyboox, maybe data/app if you want and that's your rooted stock ota zip

Hey guys, I just asked a question to the EVO folks the I remembered this thread is where I got the idea. What I've done is what Strapped said and took the ROM from the ruu for the EVO and ran it through dsixda's kitchen. It's been running great on my EVO 4g but this morning I had some time and thought I would do some themeing and found there is no systemUI.apk? I even went back to the kitchen and rechecked what I had done earlier but there just isn't one that I can find. Has anyone heard of this before? I would think that with that missing it shouldn't be working at all right?
That doesn't sound right . Are you sure your seeing all the files? I had this happen once, I did not have my settings correct on the Laptop.

Yea I'm sure. Could it be hidden somehow? Maybe in some odd folder... No one at the EVO is taking me seriously assuming I'm asking a noon like question. :-/
Edit: just for fun, I flashed a modded systemUI last night for this and its in there but nothing has changed. It's the weirdest thing I've come across Android wise.
EDIT2: is it possible the file got mixed in with something else when I deodexed it?
Edit3: I just went through the process again (I'm off work until tomorrow) and there is still no systemUI.apk? What settings on the laptop were you refering to? I can see that file in other ROMs. This is just odd...
Edit4: Ive been looking into this further and I am finding the icons from the systemUI mixed in both the system/framework/framework-res.apk and system/framework/com.htc.rescources.apk so I'm guessing somehow I mixed things together...
That is some creepy stuff
As in how it somehow got chucked in a blender with the framework files

I can't figure it out. I'd upload it for folks to look at but its for the EVO 4g and no one there is interested.

What would we have to do to make this work on Fresh 2.3.3? I've never messed with bootscreens like this so I have no idea. This is possibly one of the coolest boots I've seen though.

I think boot.img's are diffrent for sense and non-sense roms. just a guess. cause i see when people make them for sense they say they don't work on vanilla roms or visa versa. so i think you'd have to make a whole new one.

correct, i ripped apart fresh2.3.3 and he has a boot1.gif in the /system/media/bootanimation folder
on darch and froyo they have a bootanimation.zip in the /system/media folder. my guess is to take all the images in the bootanimation.zip in the part0 and possibly part1 folder stitch them together in photoshop(you can resize here too) make an animated gif, open in gimp and deoptimize then resave as animated gif. name boot1.gif and push to the /system/media/bootanimation folder.
i just adb pushed this to /system/media on zen exp and it works and it's bad ass

I can also confirm this method as working by doing the same using Fresh 2.3.3 (a sense UI based rom also). Happy booting decepticons!
I tried pushing this after I installed the CS6 test 4 with no luck. I still get the custom boot that was originally on it and DD2.7. After I push it, it shows that it was successful and give the size of the file transferred, but when I reboot I get the same one.
i pushed a custom gif using the images in this boot and it was either blank or it was small and different pixels like it was a bad res any ideas how to get it to work im using fresh 2.3.3
awesome guys glad you found an easier fix. for the froyo user i pushed it just fine i'm on cm6 test 4. pm me if you need help.
I'll try to retry it here in a few hours when I get off work. If I am still unsuccessful, I'll send you a PM. It's good to find another Kansan on here.

now you may be asking what that is. its pretty much the most awesome dev tool ever! it enables s-off in the bootloader so you can use fastboot and other crazy stuff. so it kinda makes dev'ing easier if trying to resolve a bootloop or kernel panic. Humm im on 8242010 nightly, after flashing this sprintVVM fcs. Interesting. Perhaps an APK signing issue? I'll grab a logcat then resign the apk and see what happends.
No idea why, but I rm'ed the apk from /system/app, and killed all traces of it in /cache, and /data/data. Then copied the apk manually using root explorer, set permissions and rebooted and now all is well. Probably just a fluke!

Darch can confuse people quickly.
Usually I flash whatever Darch posts but this... This scares me =P It's not like a rom or root or even a CDMA Radio where if I screw up I can RUU back to stock... Or can I -_^
Anyways, I'll probably flash this tomorrow This doesn't effect Recovery or anything else correct? I am a mobile warrior so I do my nands and flashing without a PC =)
What does this enable me to do with my phone? Like can I make a flashable zip without the signing? Or does this make it easier to customize stuff?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
This allows you to flash an ***.img file to a specific partition on your phone without making a zip. You can also make a HERCIMG.zip (a zip with multiple images in it ie, system.img, data.img, boot.img, recovery.img) and flash that straight from hboot.
Again, if you don't know what you are doing you could SERIOUSLY f*** up your phone. This gives you all the power you need to flash the wrong thing and ruin your phone. But it is VERY useful if you know what you are doing.

Yes, but in the long run it's going to be better to have all that ISH set up anyway .
Just a question and please dont take it the wrong way, but how does one plan on working on deving/porting miui or anything for that matter without the sdk/adb? I feel it is VERY important to have adb setup.

There's no need to use the unlock bootloader thing from htc, Indirect (over in the dev section) has a root method for 2.3.4 (if you choose to update to 2.3.4 anyway) that doesnt involve using the unlock tools

Well if your taking it to Sprint. Upgrading it to 2.3.4 is probably one of the first things they'll do. Before they even trouble shoot it . if you end up keeping the device, and they upgrade it. you can use the method suggested above. The link is below.

I have to sell my computer because I'm moving. I won't be able to make these for a while. They're very easy to do on your own though.
First, download this image and don't change its name.
This has probably been described a thousand times here, but I'm posting instructions for newcomers.
Steps:
1 - Extract ROM of your choice
2 - Navigate to /system/framework
3 - Using 7zip, open (don't extract) framework-res.apk
4 - Navigate to /res/drawable-nodpi/
5 - Drag background_holo_dark.png into the folder. It will replace the original
6 - Close 7zip window
7 - Using 7zip, open (don't extract) the original ROM download .zip
8 - Navigate to /system/framework
9 - Drag the edited framework-res.apk into that folder. It will replace the original
10 - Flash ROM
Using these instructions, you can take any .zip package made for Clockworkmod if you want to flash it after you install the ROM. Just delete folders except for meta-inf and drag a folder with the following directory structure into the .zip package: system/framework/framework-res.apk
That's it.
FLASH IN CLOCKWORKMOD -- ALWAYS BACK UP FIRST!!!!!!!!
Credit to endursa for making the dithered background image
I took endursa's image and put it into a flashable zip for Clockworkmod. It worked fine on my device. YMMV
No more gross banding on the uninstall screen and wherever that background exists in the UI.
I know there was already a zip for this mod by KamikaZeeFu, but it didn't work on my stock (rooted, unlocked) AT&T One X because KamikaZeeFu built it for VillainTheme, so it didn't flash.
UPDATE: I'll add links for other ROMs, because if you flash one of these on a custom ROM it will likely screw things up.
This overwrites anything you have might have modified in framework-res.apk

I didn't do anything but put the image in the appropriate place. Check the link I put in the OP for the source. I'll update the OP to be more specific in giving credit.
Oh I wasn't implying anything, they simply took a higher rez image if my memory serves. Looked great on my nexus so I'm sure it'll look just as good on the hox

Oh ok.
If you're unlocked with clockworkmod, send me (well, upload it somewhere) the framework-res.apk from your phone and I'll add it if you want.
I planning to use the 1.82 one, do we have to be de-odex to flash this or can we flash it on stock? thanks.

I pulled the apk and flashed it back all on stock 1.82 and it worked for me. Everything is exactly the same as when it was pulled except for that one png file.
Great thanks, works as expected. something so simple can make such a big difference haha

No problem.
And I totally agree. First of all, this should have been the image used in the stock build. Second, everyone who makes a custom ROM should consider including this image. Third, this image is used so often on the phone that it almost ruined the expericne for me before I found the original thread with that image in it. It's really easy to put this into any ROM, but if anyone is scared to mess with it, or just doesn't feel like it, let me know and I'll make more. I'll continue to make them until ROM cooks and developers start putting it in their ROMs.
Otherwise, there are tutorials for making/modifying your own flashable zips, but I can post a short tutorial later for any new people here. My daughter is using my computer to watch a movie right now.
I just finished a semester of learning C++. I'm going to try to learn Java over the summer to get a head start before next semester. Maybe I'll finally be able to contribute more in the near future. I've been saying that for almost two years... but I'm working on it.

is it as simple as dragging and dropping the .PNG into systemui.apk? or do you have to decomplile and all that fancy stuff? Reason I ask is Cleanrom2.1 is release and has new changes so cant use the old one no more.

Just a normal drag and drop or do we need to decompile?

Drag and drop
...into a flashable zip. I think you might run into problems doing it with a file explorer while the OS is running.
Or just put it in the ROM before you flash. That's what you're asking, right?

Here's a before and after for the folks that aren't quite sure what this does.

Thanks for this fix!
After further use this mod seems to break CleanROM 2.1 reboot menu. Not sure about anything else.
I also am not sure if it has anything to do with CleanRom being deodexed.
I've been slowly working on a JB Sense 4x project for fun. as I learn I go back and make changes here and there hoping that maybe, just maybe, one day it'll boot. As I was working on it yesterday I realized that with my Shift not working there will not be anyway for me to test it so I thought I would ask if anyone is interested in helping. It is a port from the One X. I haven't asked for permission from the original dev to release anything publicly yet (because I don't know if it'll work) so I'll have to pm links for now. Where I am at with this at the moment is the updater script. I've been through the rest of the ROM and think I have a good start but I haven't done anything in the META-INF folder. I am still reading up on how to write my own updater script but I'm not capable yet so those who want to help, this is my immediate need. It would be good for folks to go through the build.prop also. I'm still a little unsure about the changes necessary to go from a GSM ROM to CDMA.
Edit: I probably should have put this in General instead of Q&A. Sorry...

The problem will continue to be that we don't have a kernel for Sense 4.0, it won't work till we have one... but thanks for putting in the work... do you have your OG yet?
Ive modified Strapped365's new kernel and think it'll work. Ive gotten a port from the One V to boot before with the mod I made.
Edit: This was my starting point. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1707177

Thanks. I've been given permission from the dev, theDroidfanatic to put it out there publicly and will have it posted today.

Go for it man, I'm kinda busy with three other projects lol. And a new phone coming today, I doubt I'll get around to it any time soon.
I'll test whenever you need a tester.

If I can find a cheap shift on ebay I'll try and get it for you.
Im eyeying one for 5.50 right now.
and a few others for less than that. :good:
Wow guys that's great. I don't know what's wrong with my shift now. The flexcable was torn almost in half. I'm thinking I may have somehow broken something else putting the new one in. It's got me pretty bummed.
