You won't regret this device, trust me ... It says 800mhz on the box but I run at 1ghz and most shifts are overclockable to 1.8-1.9ghz. Sense isn't too bad either, i.m.o, way better than blur. Look forward to seeing ya around the forums!

Since you are on 2.3.3 you will have to downgrade hboot and root from froyo. The link I posted goes to a post with links. The first link of that post is the one you are looking for...

ok sorry not familiar with down grading i usually just flash a tar file or run a windows batch file that automatically roots and runs the scripts automatically for you..

And there's one more link to a script but I cant find it right now.
Like Drob said, to be able to get full s-off you'll have to downgrade your Hboot using one of the above mentioned methods. Or you could upgrade to 2.3.4 and use HTC's half ass unlock tool.

I guess technically you dont have to use sdk/adb.. Im sure you could use terminal to temp root and push the misc.img, then use ShiftRR (an automated root for 2.2.) once you have ruu'ed.

Yes, but in the long run it's going to be better to have all that ISH set up anyway .
Just a question and please dont take it the wrong way, but how does one plan on working on deving/porting miui or anything for that matter without the sdk/adb? I feel it is VERY important to have adb setup.

There's no need to use the unlock bootloader thing from htc, Indirect (over in the dev section) has a root method for 2.3.4 (if you choose to update to 2.3.4 anyway) that doesnt involve using the unlock tools

Well if your taking it to Sprint. Upgrading it to 2.3.4 is probably one of the first things they'll do. Before they even trouble shoot it . if you end up keeping the device, and they upgrade it. you can use the method suggested above. The link is below.

You need to read mudknot's stickied guide front to back several times. The best advice anyone can give you on it is read, read, read, and read some more. The process is not complicated, but is not easy by no means. It will happen if you read, be patient, don't rush, and follow the steps precisely.

Everyone is correct. Reading first will help things go a lot smoother. I would recommend attn1 hack kit. You have a lot of roms to choose from. Just take your time. If you really get stuck or don't understand then ask.

Im trying to follow the Ace Hack Kit (v11), but when I try to run the hack-ace.sh code, it asks me for the root password, which I don't know and can;t find anywhere online. I feel like an idiot for asking, but what is it? Ive been searching for hours.
Im running OS X 10.6.6, and the phone is Kernel version 2.6.32.21-g6a5ff14 [email protected] #1, if that helps at all.
Im new to rooting, Ive been a Jailbreaker until I just switched to Android. I understand everything in the hack guide, just cant get past the simplest step it feels like. Someone help me out?

Lol. Man the keyboard really had it in for you on that one.
I like "blowy" though. It's a refreshing change.
I have had two inspires and on my first one I used Bubby's rooting program only because it did not require the use of command prompt as much as the Hack kit did at the time, but on my second inspire I used the hack kit because that has truly been turned into a fool proof way of rooting and it seem's that bubby has abandoned his rooting program because it has not been updated for sometime. The hack kit does it all for you all you have to do is tell it what you want done by entering either a 1,2 or a 3 and it does the rest.
As for rom's I use the Coredroid because it is closer to the HTC stock sense and Surgio keeps up on the updates and the bugs also.
I'm on my first Android with the Inspire and rooted a few days ago using the hack kit... it was very simple and all went well. I've gone through a few roms already, probably didn't give each enough time but wanted to find something I liked and now ended up with GingerBeast. There is a problem with GPS though with Gingerbread but if you look for gingerbread gps fix it can be taken care of easily.
You should give each rom at least a week to see how it works, there is a wierd thing with rom's they need a couple of days to settle in to the phone and to see how the battery and everything else work with that certain rom, that is why I have chosen one rom and have stuck with it through two inspires, I have found coredroid to be the best rom for my purposes and none other fit the bill.
I am also new to Rooting of my inspire, but not a noob to android by anymeans. I searched and searched through and through the thread with the simple one click root. I understand what it is that i need to do.
But for the life of me, i cannot get the simple one click root application to download and install on my computer. I have my antivirus and all off, firewall turned off. I download the file, it starts extracting and unziping. Then it goes to installation. The green bar at the bottom gets up to about 90% full, then the entire screen just closes by itself and thats it.
Restarted my computer 4 times and tried it again 4 times last night with the same results. SO i guess my question is not going to be how to root, i think i got a grasp on that one, but can someone point me in the direction of a different link for the one click app or lend some advice of how i can get it installed.

I had the same problem with my old XP laptop. I studied for a month, was sure I had my PC set up correctly. And Bubby's just would not run on my PC. Ended up using the hack kit which worked. One thing they do say to make sure you have the latest .FrameworkNet and Java consoles installed, for something to check.
Thanks for the response. It is appreciated. I did do those updates amd still no luck. Guess its the hack kit for me.

Unlock at HTCdev then use the above link(paulobrien method) it works with US T-Mobile also. Its as simple as connecting phone to PC and installing the file. Presto! Root!

quick edit: i used obrians method, worked good and everything works fine, started up normally with a little lag then smoothly continued, im figuring that thats it....now for a rom anyone has a good rom that is good, i like the same default one that was with the phone, but all i wanted to do was keep everything and just completely take out the bloatware....i dont mind having the themes changed i just want the bloatware out of this amazing phone. thanks for helping me out.

Now that your phone is rooted just use Root Explorer to remove all the extra crap you don't want on your phone. Look in "/system/app" That's where the bloat is located.

You can. That is what I did. It's pretty simple.
Revert to 1.82, root,
one click superCID
relock in fast boot
ruu 1.85
flash the unlock token from fastboot, it took me a few tries before it took
flash a recovery (twrp is working well for us right now)
and then use the recovery to flash the SU zip file. Then you're all set
Well this is how it works.
Once you update your RUU to 1.85 then install CWM (flashing utility in recovery) You will just flash the Rom you wish this will give you root.
Hope this clears things up?
I'm unclear on the rooted 1.85 but from what I gather you have to have done superCID hack before upgrading to be able to gain root. I believe you have to also have superCID to do ruu to a previous firmware. I may be wrong but if your on 1.85 without superCID I think your SOL for now atleast.

Yes, it's simply amazing how many people will write such non-useful crap that serves no useful purpose.
Look, we've all been there. We all had to learn from the beginning at some point.
I'm also sick of people lobbing ignorant comments my way when it comes to some of the things I do for others, especially here on xda. Case in point ...
Over the last three days I've prepared a 36-page manual that describes, in great detail, how to do virtually everything on a ONE X. Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678308
It's sad when, after working an average of 70 hours per week as President an owner of my LED lighting company, plus having a 2-1/2-year-old at home, who's a wonderful challenge, plus having issues with my 82-year-old mother suffering from Alzheimers, I still MAKE time to help others, most especially here on xda. Why? Because it's the right thing to do. As I said above, we've all been there, and I'm quite sick and tired of so many others (THEY shall remain nameless), who can't spend a few extra seconds of their precious time to provide a better explanation than the simple "just do it in fastboot," or "use adb," etc.
Yes, I've now learned exactly what these two simple statements mean, but it really would have been nice, and far, far, far easier not just for me, but everyone if, instead of saying the following ...
flash it in fastboot
...they instead said something like ...
open a command prompt, navigate to your adb folder, and flash in fastboot using the following line:
fastboot flash recovery xxxxxxx.img
Wow, it took me an extra 10 seconds. Oh, my goodness, my fingers are now so sore. I think I'll head to the hospital. Be back later.
Peter
P.S. And don't anyone dare tell me, like someone did yesterday, that I should basically shut up and stop "sassing" (their word) the developers because they work so hard at what they do. You know, I probably work as hard if not MUCH harder than most of them, yet I will always try my very best to give some of my time to others. Again, as I said above, it's the right thing to do. You know, maybe if more people did just that, the world wouldn't be so full of self-centred, egotistical ingrates.

It also seems like Samsung devices are not as difficult to deal with than HTC and the locked bootloader and S-On.

Too bad. Mine took 2hrs and 20min. 2hrs of reading and 20min of methodical work in adb.
Sorry your research failed you.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
Doesnt the D3 only have the standard WW 3G Freqs, i.e. Band I. It'll be 2G on T-Mobile.

You tried the all in one toolkit?
Or the new virtuous Rom ?
Sent from my myTouch 4G Slide using xda premium
I thought getting S-Off would be hard with the new bootloader. All you really need is some free time (Hour at the longest), and some Tigers Blood (Keeping the SWAG up).
Carrier Unlock can be done for free, on a stock rom. A simple terminal command, and BAMN! Unlocked.
Rooting is so simple, ADB and 10 minutes.
Moto devices tend to not have a recovery image. Bootstrap is all you have. Going from an HTC device to Moto is a hard thing to do. When you root/unlock the device, alot of issues arise. Plus the D3 has no devs, only Hascode. You'll have 1, 2 good roms. Atleast here you have some more choice. Motorolla devices suck. I've worked with phones a better part of my life, and know many in the game. I'm best friends with a Motorolla phone tester. He's using the new Quad-Core Moto phone (Spyder 2X), pure Jellybean on it. It sucks ass, slower than slow. Our phone murders it in speed. I've never meet a happy moto owner. In the area i live in, having some best friends whos parents work for Moto is normal. Even there parent, engineers for the phones......say there P.O.S.

Nothing that is worthwhile is EVER easy. As true with phones as it is life in general. Good Luck though.
BTW......it can only honestly be considered "semi-help" because no one offered to do it FOR you. JMHO....

1 hour of research, like 20 minutes of work.
So quick and easy that months later I forgot that I did it already.
Also, I used the Droid 3 and Droid 4 at work and they suck. Build quality seems cheap, keyboards are too clicky, and phones are enourmous in size.

thank you sir you are a scholar
I'd hate for you to leave the doubleshot scene because you couldn't get the phone rooted. Its a great phone with great devs. Its a touch confusing, this one, because the firmware rev changed the process, and it may not be immediately apparent which of the instructions you need.
These are the steps I took three weeks ago to get a new-in-the-box 1.63 phone from its original condition to cm9. I ended up using hassoon's toolkit but not his gui. But the download contains adb, fastboot, a working recovery, and such dlls as are required. Used htc unlocker procedure, and I'm still s-on and it hasn't been an issue (except that I have to have my laptop to flash new roms.) So you can put the wire down.
Fetch hassoons toolkit. Fetch the HTC sync installer. I presume you've done all this, but I'm putting it down for the sake of completion. Download cm9 alpha6 to your phone's sdcard. Also, open the cm9 zip and copy the included boot.img to your computer. Probably should put it in the directory created by hassoon's, right next to fastboot.
Run the htc sync installer as far as installing the usb drivers. Cancel out before installing sync.
Extract hassoons toolkit somewhere handy.
Go to HTC's site and walk through the unlocker process. Use the binary adb in hassoon to perform the instructions therein.
Now you have hboot 1.63, unlocked, s-on.
Use fastboot in hassoon's kit to flash cwm. Don't forget to clear data and cache. I usually go ahead and wipe system and dalvik cache.
Boot into cwm. Install rom. Power down, then power up to hboot. Switch to fastboot mode.
Flash boot.img using fastboot.
Reboot.
Profit.
My phone is always with me. I'll pay attention to yer thread if you have more questions. Call it my contribution. Ftw.

Oh and I have no idea what the actual process is for rooting the stock rom. Use miktouch for that. Stock with all the work done. Its the only way to keep the camera AFAIK. But I live on cm9.

I wanted to ask how I could go about taking a rom.zip (pulled from an RUU) and turn it into a stock rooted rom. The phone flashing would be rooted, of course
And if possible, for that process, is it generic? As in, would it work for any phone/stock rom? Or only shift?

Well it would be stock Shift so unless modded it would only work for the Shift. Not sure what you're trying to do.

Well what I mean is if I took an equivalent rom.zip from the RUU for another device, then I want to be able to follow generally the same process to make it a stock rom that won't compromise root

Good luck with that, it seems like you are doing way too much work for what you are trying to achieve (which I am still a little confused on). Essentially you are trying to port a "stock" ROM from another device, and then rooting it... why go thru all the trouble? That sounds like a headache for no reason. What is the device you are taking the RUU from? Why not just port a rooted stock ROM? Like RemICS for example is basically the stock ROM for the SGS3.

Wait what...noooo thats not what I mean lol
What I'm asking is that lets say I have stock rom.zip for some device, how do I make a rooted version of that rom.zip (no porting, no other mods)
All I want to do is basically be able to reset everything to stock using that rom.zip, but without losing root on the device I'm flashing to
So like this:
Device N's rom.zip > rooted rom.zip for device N > flash rooted rom.zip to device N
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk 2
You want to pull the stock Rom out of an RUU, and use it sort of as a wipe Rom? Does that about sound right ?

If all you wanna do is what I did with the latest ota. Download the RUU.exe and open it to its first screen but don't go forward. Then open a the start menu and go to run. Once at the run box type %temp% and hit enter, then find the location of ROM.zip and move it out to the Desktop and close the RUU.exe. now inside the ROM.zip are a few images the RUU uses to flash, so now your gonna wanna take the boot.img and system.img and place them in dsixda kitchens original update folder, then open the dsixda kitchen in cmd and setup a working folder from a ROM and choose the boot.img and system.img. once that's done use the options to add root and busyboox, maybe data/app if you want and that's your rooted stock ota zip

Hey guys, I just asked a question to the EVO folks the I remembered this thread is where I got the idea. What I've done is what Strapped said and took the ROM from the ruu for the EVO and ran it through dsixda's kitchen. It's been running great on my EVO 4g but this morning I had some time and thought I would do some themeing and found there is no systemUI.apk? I even went back to the kitchen and rechecked what I had done earlier but there just isn't one that I can find. Has anyone heard of this before? I would think that with that missing it shouldn't be working at all right?
That doesn't sound right . Are you sure your seeing all the files? I had this happen once, I did not have my settings correct on the Laptop.

Yea I'm sure. Could it be hidden somehow? Maybe in some odd folder... No one at the EVO is taking me seriously assuming I'm asking a noon like question. :-/
Edit: just for fun, I flashed a modded systemUI last night for this and its in there but nothing has changed. It's the weirdest thing I've come across Android wise.
EDIT2: is it possible the file got mixed in with something else when I deodexed it?
Edit3: I just went through the process again (I'm off work until tomorrow) and there is still no systemUI.apk? What settings on the laptop were you refering to? I can see that file in other ROMs. This is just odd...
Edit4: Ive been looking into this further and I am finding the icons from the systemUI mixed in both the system/framework/framework-res.apk and system/framework/com.htc.rescources.apk so I'm guessing somehow I mixed things together...
That is some creepy stuff
As in how it somehow got chucked in a blender with the framework files

I can't figure it out. I'd upload it for folks to look at but its for the EVO 4g and no one there is interested.

It's understandable, anymore it is a relatively cheap device to obtain for a starter into Android. I just wish people would read and search before posting... that should be a rule. And this guy (me) should be getting an OG soon.
