[Q] JB Dual Screen Trouble - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there, I am a noob not only here but about Android as well - you may forgive me, please.
Bought myself a Christmas gift (sure, a Note 10.1), this came with ICS 4.0.4. Couldn´t wait till Christmas , I started it last weekend and felt very pleased about, everything as I expected after researching for some time about the pro´s and con´s between iPad and the Note (N-8010). Just after one day of playing around, I decided to go for JB, which had just been released here in Germany a few days before.
One of the main pro´s of the Note for me actually had been the split screen - which worked very well on ICS.
Even what I could not imagine, a search of files (actually pictures, the main purpose for me to get a tab had been to bring around my thousands of around becoming able to check quickly I do have an object - mainly aircraft - already or not) on the one split, by using the Polaris Office browser (files folder), activated the one touched by the sPen in the other split opened with the Gallery.
What a disappointment after JB became alive - not only but I can manage, that the split screen cannot be activated by an open button on the top of the screen, now it´s hidden at the bottom, the catastrophe is, that a click on a picture (and also other) file in the browser does cause the other split being closed :crying: whilst the remaining split remains of half the screen size (but the picture / file opens in it)!
Why the hell I did the JB update???? Does anyone have an idea other than downgrading back to ICS (which I considered about and checked some guidelines, but must say this appears too much demanding for my "just a user" capability)?
Thank´s in advance for your feedback.

[Q] "Buy" button missing from Zune

I don't know if I'm the only one experiencing this.
But, the "buy" button seems to be missing from the app marketplace within Zune software
I can still purchase videos and musics from it. But not apps.
I can still buy apps from the phone directly, but not being able to use Zune software to browse through the market is rather annoying.
Any solutions?
Am I the only person with this problem right now?
Are they just doing some maintenance and will it come back soon?
[Solved]
It just came back.
I saw this as well and I think it's just a maintenance thing. Because the phone marketplace is acting wonky too.

I've been having this issue for months. It's a pain because I want to get my apps from Zune so I can quickly reinstall if need be. Don't know a cause.
did you resize the screen? if its in a small size window , the buy button wont be showing , try resizing to a larger screen and it will re appear!
Missing 'Buy' button is a programming error...
... as far as I am concerned. There are far too many folks using netbooks and sub-notebooks that do not use a 'something' by 640 or 'something' by 800 as a minimum display size. The Toshiba NB series computers use for their own display a 1024 x 600. Odd size, but very functional for those folks that prefer something smaller and lighter in their briefcases. It is handy that most can attach an external display of more common size to get around this issue.
I and my crew are just such people. I do not limit my folks from modifying their equipment or adding what they like. In fact, all of our sub-notebooks have been upgraded to the 500Gb hybrid drives and W7 Ultimate with Enterprise Office. They work GREAT!! (a little Tony The Tiger imitation there)
So, any time we find a program that fails to function on our screens, it's obviously a failure on the part of the programmers to consider the true variety of users they are serving. Saddly, most 'commercial' programmers today think of only larger drives, more power, and more speed. 'Elegant' code is a thing of the past I fear.
My only hope is that whoever it was that wrote the 'buy' button has the wherewithall to realize the error of their way and either unlock its position so it can float as needed, or go ahead and let the screen overflow and give us a slider so we can make the choice to look further down the page if need be. You don't really have to jam everything into one screen, even though from time to time that can be nice. Figure it out, programmer. It's your job.

HTC Status\ChaCha First Impressions

Anyone else got the ChaCha yet?
Picked one up for my wife yesterday and I have to say I'm quite impressed. Solid build, nice weight, quite speedy too.
Has the Sense 3.0 lockscreen with shortcuts. No Weather\Stocks\Friendstream on the lockscreen though, just a background.
Also comes with a HTC version of Facebook chat, seems ok but can just use the inbuilt chat in the facebook app if you prefer.
Facebook integration is pretty tight, the same as with the other HTC Sense handsets. The Facebook button is quite handy and cool for uploading photos to facebook.
Will update further once we've played with it a bit more
yes
just bought one for myself as I need a keyboard (white/silver)
basically screen looks like wildfire S. very sharp
keyboard is excellent
and surprised there is forward facing camera and radio
signal quality is good and phone quality is good
even the charger is white
very nice so far
please keep updates coming
Thanks both - please keep updating us on your experiences
can't wait to play with my htc chacha..i do expecte to have it delivered by royal mail in 1 week.
ChaCha is nice!
I had same feeling. ChaCha is nice. I did not expect the keyboard is so good.
I installed Morelocale2 for Japanese use.
Japanese font is installed, and Open Wnn worked smoothly with the hardware keyboard.
It may replace my Blackberry Torch.
Further usage continues positive impressions.
Personally I wouldn't have bothered with the camber in the middle for aesthetic reasons. However for ergonomic purposes it is positive, in that it puts the screen at a better viewing angle when holding it and also wraps to your ear more nicely when making calls.
I would also have made the facebook button a more general assignable button, perhaps that will come with software
Its nice to have real "make" and "cancel" call buttons. This is always much better for people using their phones to actually make calls but seems to have been dropped on virtually all new iOS, Android and WP7 touch smartphones now.
For folk who thing this is a generic Android implementation, its not, its been tweaked alot for a landscape screen. HTC have obviously thought about how the device will be used and it has lessons learned from the excellent S620 and SNAP.
As well as sense and the display being optimised for landscape, window 1 is now the furthest left of the horzontal scroll (to go to different windows). I prefer this over the standard Android where extra windows are to the left and the right of the main windows.
Marketplace is also adapted for the size of the screen and landscape.
Note that by default, the web browser and other apps hides the status line on the top. thisis a good thing, as its a waste of space (maybe learnt from WP7 which has the perfect hidding of status symbols from permanent display !!!).
So far can continue to confirm that all radios (bluetooth, wifi and 3G) work well and calls are clear. Data also seems to be fine, marginally ahead of my Desire S in terms of keeping the signal (perhaps this is an illusion).
There IS an accelerometer, but most built-in apps seem to ignore it. e.g. the web browser does not go to portrait if you tilt the screen. It also seems that the orientation for portrait is not currently picked up by most market place apps/games. i.e. install "sky ball". You will see that to control the running ball you need to tilt left and right, but on the ChaCha, you need to tilt back and front. Clearly the game is not playable like this.
On the subject of "auto-rotate" screen, I have just found an option in the display settings called "auto rotate screen - after market downloaded applications"
I can confirm when ticking this box, most of my downloaded applications auto-rotate when I turn the phone. however this does not effect built in applications (e.g. mail, web browser, etc.)
some other things to note:
1. Chacha has 800mhz new design cpu (faster then 600mhz one in salsa and wildfire S)
2. Chacha does have an FM radio (bizzarely many previews on the internet say it hasn't)
3. The camera is 5mp with face detection and flash.
4. Note that with the latest version of Android (on the ChaCha - 2.3.3) you can move most applications you install from the marketplace to the SD card. so internal memory is not really an issue.
Lastly the keyboard is nice to use. Each key is spaced nicely and has a positive click

MANY thanks my friend - great info!
Where in London did you buy it from? I'm thinking of picking it up at the Carphone Warehouse sim-free today (8 June)
Do you find the screen is too small? The chacha resolution is better than other similar phones such as Samsung Galaxy Pro and Acer Betouch E210 (I returned the Acer cause I found it hard to read web pages etc on its resolution).
How is the battery life? Do you think it'll last a day?
Sorry for all questions!

I bought from carphonewarehouse simfree on cheapside it was £229
The battery seems the same as the Desire S. i.e. 2 days if you don't use, 1-1.5 days if you get email & browse
The screen is small (2.6"). I bought this over the samsung galaxy pro due to the 480x320 resolution. Its a sacrifice for this type of device, however the resolution is fine (same as HTC Legend, etc.)
Hi All,
My wife has noticed an annoying bug, can someone check for us to see if it s common bug or just our very own
When typing in Gtalk or SMS and a smiley is used, it can turn blue, enlarge a little and stay on the screen with no way to get it off (reboot phone)
anyone else seen this? I haven't done any of the obvious things yet such as uninstall Gtalk and re-install or do a factory reset

Ah right - Not sure about the SMS just what she told me over the phone. I've walked her through a factory reset and all seems OK at the moment. If it returns I'll uninstall Gtalk and put it back on.
What software version is everyone on? I notice the latest update is 1.18.401.1 but I'm sure my wife's is still on 1.17 I tried to initiate an update last night but was told it's up to date.

Can the ChaCha record HD Video?
Nice phone indeed! Good quality.
My call and end buttons dont work! Can anyone help please?
Just picked up mine yesterday and I'm absolutely loving the keyboard!
I came from an HTC Tattoo as I was finding it increasing frustrating to type on a touchscreen. I guess I'm a physical keyboard guy!

UK 3.1 Update

can anyone confirm this?
http://www.motorola-xoom.co.uk/andr...out&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
Yes I can, that is how I reported my experience on the Motorway forum, now running UK 3g 3.1.
Me Too...
Two updates rolled out today. The first was a simple update (maybe required update to get the full one to work but it was marked optional) followed by the 3.1 update (which was marked as important)
Update Details:
XOOM: MZ601 (3G)
Android version: 3.1
Firmware version: GAS_EMEA_UCAEVRSTURTCOREE_P045
Baseband version: N_01.83.35P
Baseband configuration version: UCAEVEUB1B88EU03C.0R
Kernel version: 2.6.36.3-00010-g3139c20 / [email protected] #1
Build number: H.6.3-25-5
No Google Books included (you can download the apk elsewhere on this forum), but Movie Studio is there.
Hi all,
Mine arrived today for my UK Xoom MZ601 with exactly the same details as the above poster will report back later how its all working.
Marc
Got my update. On the 10th August.
Loaded in about 5 minutes and kept all my programme's and settings.
Free bluetooth mouse now works.
Hdmi out to large screen TV is brilliant.
Usb is still not fully functional ie. will not work with flash drives or hard disks but ok with thing like usb mouse and cameras.
Can't say I've noticed much different in speed, its a little better.
Browser use to crash all the time on 3.01, its much more stable now.
Micro SD is now working and can transfer files from internal sd to external sd but not from PC to external sd via usb cable.
Music player will still not fetch art work from the internet without external programme. ( yes to those in the USA, that's how we spell it)
Google maps has a problem with sometimes not zooming in closer than 1000ft unless I change from terrain view to satellite view (or the reverse).
Camera setting do not reverse if the tablet is turned 180° but the last taken picture does.
Still no software volume slider. (Not a problem but would be nice).
When using standard browser on the xda-developers website cannot use the normal search facility have to use advanced search. ( don't know if that's xda's web problem or the browser.
And last but not least, there is a big typing delay when using the browser (as reported by others)
That's all I can think of at the moment endless YOU can think of anything.
Since updating, mine seems to eat through the battery quicker! Anyone else getting that?
marketplace seems almost empty
Got my 3.1 update yesterday but when you go into the marketplace, categories and say business, all I can see is 8 top paid apps and 8 top free and no way to see all the other apps in this category! Am I missing something?
Any suggestions appreciated.
Will keep an eye on my battery levels over the next few days and see what happens.
As to the market, there are categorys on the right hand side or you can search for programmes at the top

thanks for the suggestion but my problem is when I enter a category, say business, all I see are 8 paid apps and 8 free apps and as we both know there are much more than that but that's all I can see with no way of browsing to all the other apps in that category.
hi jscsltd
As stated in my previous mail at the top next to the picture of the magnifying glass, type in what type of programme you are looking for ie. networking.
By the way I am only a junior member.
Have now revised my opinion of the browser, it still keeps crashing to much.
Thanks again for yor help but my problem is in just browsing the apps in a category and only seeing the 8 top free business apps with no way of browsing any more as you can on a phone.
Browser seems much more stable and faster with no crashes yet.
Ok I understand now each category should show all programmers under that category not just the top paid and the top free ones.
Maybe its like that because like an iceberg there's far more underneath than one can handle.

He he, you could be right.
So its not just me with the problem.
My work around is to browse using the appbrain app.
Re battery problem
Can't say I have noticed any difference in battery use, seems to be lasting a long as it was before the update. Having said that I have not actually timed it its just a guess over the last six days of use.
@jscsltd
That is the new layout for the market next to where it says free or paid apps there is an arrow click on it and you will see all the apps by just scrolling down. Hope that resolves your issue as at least that is how it works on my Xoom 3.1.
Marc
Yes Dogmann I've seen that as well, seams it has only been enabled recently, but on mine not all sections have arrows next to them. Maybe its an ongoing project that's not yet finished.

[Q] Polaris and multiview...

Hello everyone,
I bought the Note 10.1 about one month ago and am mostly satisfied with it, except for one point.
As a student, I use the SNote app a lot during lectures, and I like to import images from pdf presentations in my notes. The multiview is very handy for that, but the problem comes from Polaris (and possibly the multiview mechanics?).
1. Is there a way to change polaris fonts ? The texts and math formulas are displaying in a very ugly way. If I don't zoom, some letters are half-erased, sometimes the letters are not equally spaced within a word or sentence. In Adobe reader, it display fine as it would on any computer. This is annoying and sometimes unreadable... Is there a way to fix this somehow ?
2. When I'm done importing files, or any time I don't need the second window, I usually close the multiview. But that quits the app and I cannot resume where it was left. Pretty annoying when I have to reopen the same pdf 5 times during a lecture... Is there a way to make it so that the app just goes in the background without quitting ?
I am using a GT-N8010, 4.0.4, version number (if it's of any use) IMM76D.N8010XXALGC.
My Polaris version is 4.0.5002.33. I updated it recently to see if the above issues would be resolved, but unfortunately not.
Thanks in advance for your answers.
Askherion
The only advice I can give is to be patient and wait for jellybean as I believe it fixes your problem with multi app view. I've seen demonstrations on YouTube where you can have lots of apps open and you can resize them to any size you want, including full screen. The other apps are still open in the background and you can bring them forward as needed.
Do a search for "galaxy note 10.1 jelly bean", and look for Zedomax multi window demo. I believe this is what you are asking for in your second question.

Moleskine Journal

Hello everyone, Moleskine Journal app is finally released on Samsung Apps ( I only found it available on Spain's app market for now) and supposedly it is going to be exclusively on Samsung devices for 6 months. It might not replace S Note or Lecturenotes for everyone, but I found it to be quite handy and useful for quick sketches/notes. I'm a big fan of Moleskine and been waiting for this app since it was announced in August. Hope you guys will like it.

Moleskine Journal for the Note 10.1 and Landscape mode
Thanks silverbladef
Upon reading your post I've seen that actually in Samsung apps (Spain) there is it, but only selecting as device the Note and the Note2 and not the Note 10.1.
Hopefully there would be soon a slightly different "tablet" version of the app since, it seems to me, the one for the Note works only in portrait mode and a tablet user should be able to work in landscape mode too, as it can be seen in this document by Moleskine.

thankyou!
Amazing ! I Know it's no S Note but amazing to have
It seems to be a special Samsung version that requires touchwiz to work.
Does fc when opening on CM10 based rom.
Update
The app has been updated to v1.1 and now it is compatible with the Note 10.1 (portrait mode included.) I tried to search for it in the Samsung App Store but no results came up, so you have to go to the "Best S Pen Apps" section and you should be able to see it there.

Great! Thanks silverbladef for the heads up!
The new version (1.1) is finally usable with the GNote 10.1 as it can work in both portrait and landscape mode.
I've tried it (for about half an hour) and my first impression is that there's very great potential but also some work to do... (see "cons" later in this post).
Yet I find it the most simple and effective note taking app amongst the ones I've tried so far.
It has almost all of the essential tools I judge as important and necessary for a S-Pen enabled tablet and some more.
Some of them are:
Free hand pen writing with pressure sensitivity.
Quick commands to change the pen/brush/pencil size/color/transparency
Text box insertion (and editing function at a later time)
Quick tool to free-hand select part of the ink writing or some text box to copy or move it to another position.
Quick way to use image/ink writing or text clips saved in "the pocket" to use them later, also in a different notebooks (this feature is rather unique for note taking apps and could be very useful for some type of usage!).
Some of the cons I've found so far:
There's still some excessive lag in opening the notebooks, in executing some commands and in navigating through pages.
Lack of some custom settings.
Automatic saving process is not fully reliable (i.e. even if almost always the notebook is automatically saved on exit, in some cases during the tests I've made, it wasn't saved and I haven't seen a command to manually save it...)
To summarize I think that the app needs some more testing and streamlining to be used with a 10.1 tablet, but, if the developer goes on to work on and improve it, it will probably soon become one of the best note taking apps (together with my presently favorite one that's LectureNotes).
What I liked most is the ratio between the effectiveness of the available tools and the simplicity of the UI and of the settings.
Yet to improve further the app I think that some few settings should be addedd (i.e. to create custom pens/brushes, to set the pressure sensitivity level or to create more custom templates).
I agree with you. As a big fan of Moleskine, this app probably would never replace S Note for me. I use it if i wanted to sketch or write something quickly with the same feel of the physical journals I posses of. It needs a lot of improvements to be done, a better reliable back up system, and autosaving for sure. One thing I noticed is the pencil/pen setting always defaults to a thicker kind of pen and I have to readjust it every time I open a notebook, frustrating.
I really hope they continue to develop this app, but it has some serious issues. It is soooo SLOW! When a page has any significant amount of writing or drawing on it, it takes ages to load the page, or switch to a new page in a book. It must be storing all the lines as vectors, because even after erasing all the lines with the eraser tool, the page still takes forever to load. Even with a blank book, it takes a couple of seconds to switch to a new page.
The color picker lets you choose a transparency value for a brush, but it doesn't work except for the marker tool, but only if you change transparency, and then adjust brush size.
With a graph paper book, switching from landscape to portrait will mess up the graph paper and make it not square. You have to re-select the graph paper background again to get it back to normal.
The brush size will reset itself when switching from landscape to portrait.
When doing small details or letters at a medium to slow speed, they are automatically deleted.
I like the idea of this app, but right now it really stinks, usability-wise, I'm surprised they released it in its current state.
password problem
Since the update my password doesn't work and I can't open any password protected books. Anyone else have this? Any way of getting into the book?
