Switching from HTC - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I've been an HTC "Incredible" series user from the original now up to the 4G. Unfortunately, I'm going on my 4th replacement because the apps won't save to the phone storage and delete upon restarting. The internal storage is too small for the app amount I have. You can't save apps to SD either. I have a 64GB with a bunch of music so an SD slot is a must.
I've never been a Samsung fan but after watching reviews I'm blown away. Verizon owes me. If I can get the switch do you think I'll enjoy this phone? I'd like pros, cons, etc. Very disappointed with HTC. This seems like the only worthy android phone out there.

The only big drawback of this phone is the bad reception. Which in turn causes battery drain. You should still be able to get 2-5 hours of screen on time anyways though. Just wished Samsung made better antennas because this would be a beast of a phone it they did.

It's not bad reception for all. You will have 14 days to return. Before you get the phone, jot down your reception dbm in all of your usual places and then compare them. Not scientific by any means but it will at least give you an idea.
In my case, is +-5 compared to my old incredible. At work, where I don't have Wi-Fi, I get better.

My signal is hectic everywhere. I can walk a few feet and go from 4 bars to 1 bar. Many other people are experiencing similar issues to me. I even went to the vzw store and an employee who had the s3 said the same thing about the reception. It is an issue, some people just live in great service areas so its not a problem for them.

I moved from the original HTC Incredible to the S3 a few week ago and I've been very happy. I'm not having reception issues like the other (Verizon is very strong in my area). Before I switched I as using a version of CM9 for the Incredible. It was working well, but I was getting to the point where it rebooted itself every other day or so. You'll really like the speed and bigger screen of the S3.
If you like some of the features of sense (like Facebook images on your contacts) etc. I can give you some of the free app's I've been using to give you the same effect.

I've owned a couple of Verizon HTC Phones (Rezound, Thunderbolt) and I doubt I will go back to HTC. The GS3 beats the HTCs in just about everything I can think of, and the reception is better than both of my HTC phones (both in my home area and areas frequently traveled to).

I switched from my old Droid Incredible (the original) to the GS3 and I couldn't be happier. Any samsung baked-in stuff can always be flashed away if you don't like it.

What? If you're saying can't move apps to SD I don't care as long as there is 16gb to store them. I use my SD for music, pics, etc. The Inc 4G won't allow them to save to phone storage just the small 1gb internal storage. This is an issue that hasn't been fixed and I'm not gonna wait.

Thunderbolt to S3
I just got my S3 last week. Previously I was on a HTC Thunderbolt for 1.5 years. Man, what a difference. Everything is better, faster on the S3. I haven't noticed data drops or bad reception like others on the thread but that might be because my TBolt was so bad in this area anything would be a huge improvement.
There is some crapware on it, but not as bad as what I had on the HTC. To me it doesn't cross the line. The phone is so powerful that I don't feel any lag from the crapware.
Overall, I'm hugely impressed by my first Samsung phone. I won't be going back to HTC anytime soon. The only outstanding issue is a nice sdcard slot that can take a 64gb card and no way to move anything over to it besides the camera's photos. Looking into some hacks to get my spotify cache files moved over.

I also came from the original incredible and I have to say there are some things that you need to get used to. For example no more sense. However functionablity hands down goes to samsung. Picnpic is great use it like every other day and occasionally I use svoice (mostly for calling/texting people in my car). Lock screen for both HTC and Samsung are very similar. For whatever choice you make both companies make great phones.

ATT offered to replace my Infuse

Long story short: I am on my third Infuse with constant dropped calls. ATT has now offered to replace my phone.
Any thoughts on what to get. I think my options are:
Atrix 2
LG Nitro
Captivate slide (really miss the physical keyboard)
Skyrocket
S2
The Nitro and Skyrocket seem to have some pretty stellar reviews.
I think the Atrix still has a locked bootloader.
The Slide has the keyboard I have been missing since I got the Infuse.
And the S2 has a smaller screen
Any thoughts on any of these phones?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Definately Skyrocket
Captive slide feels cheaply made its very light even with the battery in

****rocket has all sorts of weird bugs - awful battery life, apparently data rarely works. AT&T's user support forums are full of people with issues.
Glide is oddball hardware - Tegra2 is a pretty poor processor, Heimdall won't talk to it, don't expect much developer love for this device

From what I've read, all Samsung devices using the Qualcomm chip instead of the Exynos have screen tuning issues. Either way, I would take an Infuse first and the SGS2 second.
wow, no one is giving any love to the nitro. the more reviews I read, the more I am liking it. anyone care to elaborate on the reasons for the s2 or rocket instead of the nitro? reviewing the specs, the nitro seems just as tricked out as the others and even better speced on several fronts. not trying to start a war, just trying to figure out how to best take advantage of att's "generosity".

I'm wondering if there's something wrong with the network where you are - does it always drop in the same place?
No one else has had the problems you have had, and for it to happen with three devices says "network" to me.
I never had a problem with dropped anything while driving - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011GI94Q means it's extremely rare to ever have less than 3-4 bars anywhere when behind the wheel.
(I live in the boonies - I often go through areas where no phone ever has coverage, but with the Wilson I'll still usually have 3-4 bars in those places. It has more than exceeded my expectations.)

No disrespect--just curious
Why would you be "new to the One S" and now asking if you should get something else and wondering about issues. If you mean you don't have it yet then there are many threads and posts on the forum already. And as far as I can say, it is perfect if you are OK with no SD Card and 9.3gb available internal memory--I am. Some complain on Multitasking--I have no issues. Although, all that is individual needs and opinions--and is covered extensively in various threads--
Highly recommend starting to read the General and Q&A sections for a wealth of info--
Whatever your currrent status is with the phone--enjoy it if you got it--and you will enjoy it, if you buy it--
Ken
I love the phone only thing I've noticed is multitasking, and signal. With regards to multitasking what happens is let's say you're web browsing or playing a game whatever then you do something else like check xda app. When you go back a lot of times instead of those apps continuing where they left off from it has to start up back again. It actually does it for xda app also. With the signal cell tower signal I just get a lot of fluctuations between bars dropping and coming back.

I flashed Trickdroid and Axiom S and wifi calling still not usable. I have turrible reception in parts of my house.
I wonder if the crappy wifi calling quality has its root in an buggy radio, if another ROM is also suffering from it? Anyhow, that is really the only "defect" I can find with this model. Otherwise, it's good! I wish it would have a removable SD card, but I recall reading somewhere in the forums that it is possible to mount external drives and such on this phone, but you need a USB Y cable (since the phone can't power the external device), or at least that's what I remember. One might also need a ROM to use the phone as a USB host. The possibility to do this makes me a little less upset over having just 16 GB of memory (or on TMob US only 10GB because of all the junk it comes with).
GS3 FTW!

Switching to Verizon and have questions.

Hi everyone! I am switching to Verizon from sprint and I am in a pickle. I am deciding on which device I should go with. The sg3 or moto Maxx. I like the sg3 because I know that it is fully supported and I come from a nexus s 4g so pretty similar. One of my main questions is call clarity. How is it really? I have heard different opinions. Thanks for xda and the memebers for their help.

My S3 is on par with my last two blackberries, and I consider call clarity to be excellent.
Go with the sgs3, call quality is pretty clear and the noise cancelling microphone works wonders!

My friend just got the Droid DNA, and I must say that its a pretty nice phone. Unfortunately, I am not really a big droid fan, so I am glad you stuck with the S3 and got that instead. I do know however, that the Droid DNA has much better battery life then the S3. When it comes to call quality, I found that I tend to have better signal then most droids. My girlfriend had a droid and her signal in my basement is barely there, where as I had 4 bars. So I think S3 overall is a lot better

I personally think the SIII + Android wallops any phone running windows. If you're pissed at yourself and want to teach yourself a lesson, then yeah make the trade.
If you like the windows phone launcher just get launcher 8. It's free and then you have the ability to get the best of both world. Android is great because you can transform it to look like anything. Also if you want the windows notifications there are apps for that to. That is why android is great you can mix and match to make it look like anything. You could even make it look like an iphone with espier launcher (personally wouldn't do that).

No, I wouldnt. I would get bored of the UI really quick and not being able to customize it much
I'd give it a shot. If nothing else you'll reinforce your decision one way or another.
I got the HTC Trophy Windows Phone and was quite happy with it. At the time it was very refreshing to have a phone that was always responsive and never needed a reboot....it just worked. I was also glad to have free time in the evenings again by not tweaking/reflashing my phone all the time. There were very few apps that I couldn't find alternatives for with Windowws phone....don't let anyone talk about quantity of appa like 125k apps aren't enough...another refreshing experience was the uniformed-ness of the apps...and the general clean looks.
There are a lot of things Microsoft did right, but in the end there were too many limitations compared to what android offered (actual file management for non music, video, or picture files).
I'd keep an eye on Windows Phone as really some of those limitations were due to MS playing catch up and not having enough time to implement them. They will fill out those features soon enough.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
No for the sole reason of a pathetic number of apps (good apps...not random apps. ex: still no pandora app). Is verizon giving you this as a replacement or are you selling it? If its a replacement, no way...new gs3 for a refurb windows phone..thats a no for me.
Stop with the lack of apps bit. Sure there may not be an official Pandora app, but there were at least 2 apps that used the Pandora api and worked just as good as Pandora....let alone the html5 Pandora webpage worked fine...including you still being able to use the universal music controls on the lock screen. The unofficial app was actually better because it never played an ad....though it might have changed in the last couple of months.
Now to back track a bit as I got carried away with supporting Windows Phone to realize what you were really asking.....with the support Samsung has behind the S3 and the hardware features I don't think you'd really be gaining anything by switching....in fact I will admit that you'll probably lose features by switching. If you had an older Android phone then sure, but an S3 is too capable and stable to be replaced by anything just yet...except maybe a Note 2....

To answer my own question, the Nexus 5 is getting way better service than my Nexus 4. On wifi and on tmobile
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
I actually had worse cellular radio performance out of my Nexus 5 compared to my Nexus 4 while using it yesterday. Inside my office, I'm pretty sure I was averaging fewer bars, and the N5 couldn't decide if it was going to connect to 2G, HSPA+, or LTE. Outside, it flipped between HSPA+ and LTE as I moved around (mostly driving, but a few times even walking around a parking lot).
So, I'm not sure if it's my particular N5, or N5s in general, but so far I'm not impressed with its cellular performance relative to my N4.
I'm getting better performance so far, which I'm glad about as I also had a pretty bad time with the Nexus 4 over other phones. The 5 isn't amazing, but it's alright and acceptable to me.
I'm getting generally worse reception, especially inside at work. Before with my N4 I got perfectly acceptable reception where I sat. Now with the N5 I literally get nothing.. nothing at all. It won't even give me a smidgen of reception. I have to walk towards the front of our building to get anything.
Anyone else experiencing something similar?

So in a completely random way I turned data roaming on and off just for ****s and giggles and within 5 seconds of turning it off I all of a sudden had a full HSPA signal. ????? It appears to work flawlessly now.
My signal on the n4 jumped all over the place. It holds still full and I don't lose service now in a town I drive through. I get WiFi outside my house that can stream video when my n4 couldn't at all.

I have better dbm signal strength on the N5 (comparing to my GS4) in pretty much all locations I've been to so far.
I'm getting better reception than my note 2 it seems. Very happy so far.

Overall, this seems to be the case for me as well. And I'm comparing for reception underground (basement level) where I work.
It's better then the Nexus 4, but I'm using it on CDMA and it's CDMA reception is less then the HTC EVO 4G by 1 bar.
