Hi everyone! I am switching to Verizon from sprint and I am in a pickle. I am deciding on which device I should go with. The sg3 or moto Maxx. I like the sg3 because I know that it is fully supported and I come from a nexus s 4g so pretty similar. One of my main questions is call clarity. How is it really? I have heard different opinions. Thanks for xda and the memebers for their help.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda app-developers app
My S3 is on par with my last two blackberries, and I consider call clarity to be excellent.
Go with the sgs3, call quality is pretty clear and the noise cancelling microphone works wonders!

If I helped you, please hit the thanks button!
I just switched from TMobile to Verizion....Got a great black friday deal for a GS3 from Amazon.....Calling is excellent even after I rooted and put CM10 ROM installation on it....Phone is flawless....Highly recommend it....
Call quality is better on my gs3 compared to my droid incredible. You do have 14 days to return it, buy it and test it. I was worried about call quality and data connections but I have had zero troubles. Others do though, one way to find out.

Call quality is good and shouldn't be any different than moto.. Moto might have few dBm better signal tho

I have a RazrMaxx and an S3. I love the screen size and all the little features of the S3, but I do have to say that the Motorola does have a little but better radio overall. I do a lot of driving and in sketchy areas (cell coverage), the Motorola will probably have on average 1 extra bar than the S3.

If you actually use your phone to make verbal calls get anything but the S3. If you are teen and love to text, the S3 is a fine choice.

Gs3.
RAZR Maxx HD is old technology. Only 1g ram and sub par camera. You will regret the choice within two months.
I've had my S3 for about a week and I've had no issues with call clarity. My previous phone was a HTC Incredible (original one) and this one is on-par with that phone or even better.

why not get Droid DNA? looks amazing and specwise
My friend just got the Droid DNA, and I must say that its a pretty nice phone. Unfortunately, I am not really a big droid fan, so I am glad you stuck with the S3 and got that instead. I do know however, that the Droid DNA has much better battery life then the S3. When it comes to call quality, I found that I tend to have better signal then most droids. My girlfriend had a droid and her signal in my basement is barely there, where as I had 4 bars. So I think S3 overall is a lot better

The Droid name has been used by I think two different manufacturers so far. Motorola and HTC. So signal would vary.

Austin just got LTE and I went with a friend to get the skyrocket. The lag was obvious with the browser but the internet was smoking! It's so tempting to take my less than 30 day old sgsII back to hop on the LTE train. At first glance, i couldn't tell a difference with the display crispness but knowing it's there does bug me. Anyone else go to the skyrocket from the ogsII and have any regrets?
I made the switch and have no regrets.
Can you guys comment on the battery life on the skyrocket vs galaxy s2? Have the skyrocket and no lte here yet but already a bit disappointed in the battery. Plus I figure if its this bad now it must be much worse with lte

I went from GSII to Skyrocket.. I have to agree, battery is not better or worse than most of my past Androids. If anything, this shows better battery life BECAUSE of how LTE should be draining more juice.
Now that ive experienced LTE, its LTE over HSPA anyday.

Battery life for me has been excellent on the Skyrocket .. for me though, I have gone past my 30 days (dammit) .. if there was choice to get the SGS2 or even back to the Infuse .. I would jump on it immediately. The fact that there is MORE out there for ROMs and customization for those other 2 phones than there is for this !!! I figured the SGS2 Skyrocket would have took off in regards to having some neat ROMs .. but I guess I jumped the gun to damn soon.. Even looking at the HTC Vivid, they're in the same boat in regards to getting anything good on there phones.

Ahh just me venting .. LOL
Yeah, the HTC Vivid looked good (was one of my choices before the SGS2 Sky), but with all the crap out there from HTC CEO and his promises, I knew that one wouldn't be the one to get.
I love the SGS2 Sky .. my final choice, seeing that there was many out there for the original SGS2 (all variants) in regards to ROMs, that the LTE versions (ours and Rogers) would follow soon in regards to the selections .. ME GETTING IMPATIENT .. LOL
But truthfully .. it will be well worth the WAIT
I think things are starting to look up for the skyrocket we have johnsondr80 of the collective working on his red sonja rom, mortem taum doing amazing wallpapers, da_g doing at&t and Rogers kernels just to name a few
After using Vibrant for more than a year and recently switching to AT&T with SkyRocket, I'm seeing exceptional battery compared to Vibrant. On moderate use, it never lasted me a whole day. On SkyRocket, I have been using it moderately since 8 AM this morning and after 14 hours, I still have 14% battery remaining.

This phone has the best battery life of the 2 android phones I've had which are the captivate and the g2 and is close to the iphone 4 battery life for me. I'm not in an LTE area but the speeds are already super fast compared to those phones.
I have also been debating between the gsII and the skyrocket because I love flashing roms (maybe I haven't tasted LTE yet), but I am really hoping for great developers to come to this phone. Right now I see a lot of potential though.
For now you could also use the T-Mobile SGH-T989 roms haha.

I agree The battery is the same if not better than than my Captivate. I live in an LTE market, but the phone spends a lot of time on WiFi when I am home.
Long story short: I am on my third Infuse with constant dropped calls. ATT has now offered to replace my phone.
Any thoughts on what to get. I think my options are:
Atrix 2
LG Nitro
Captivate slide (really miss the physical keyboard)
Skyrocket
S2
The Nitro and Skyrocket seem to have some pretty stellar reviews.
I think the Atrix still has a locked bootloader.
The Slide has the keyboard I have been missing since I got the Infuse.
And the S2 has a smaller screen
Any thoughts on any of these phones?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Definately Skyrocket
Captive slide feels cheaply made its very light even with the battery in
E3D
Sg2

From what I've read, all Samsung devices using the Qualcomm chip instead of the Exynos have screen tuning issues. Either way, I would take an Infuse first and the SGS2 second.
wow, no one is giving any love to the nitro. the more reviews I read, the more I am liking it. anyone care to elaborate on the reasons for the s2 or rocket instead of the nitro? reviewing the specs, the nitro seems just as tricked out as the others and even better speced on several fronts. not trying to start a war, just trying to figure out how to best take advantage of att's "generosity".

I'm wondering if there's something wrong with the network where you are - does it always drop in the same place?
No one else has had the problems you have had, and for it to happen with three devices says "network" to me.
I never had a problem with dropped anything while driving - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011GI94Q means it's extremely rare to ever have less than 3-4 bars anywhere when behind the wheel.
(I live in the boonies - I often go through areas where no phone ever has coverage, but with the Wilson I'll still usually have 3-4 bars in those places. It has more than exceeded my expectations.)

As someone who owns both, I would recommend you stick it out and wait for the magic of an unlocked bootloader and custom ROMs to unlock the full potential of this phone and its dual-core CPU.
Compared to my Inspire, the battery life, lighter weight, better call quality, better antenna, and what seems to be crisper screen make my move from one to the other worth it.
I came from an Inspire, don't trade for it.... I love HTC phones, but I had a ton of oddities, with it.
There are a ton of things that can be done with out an unlocked bootloader, even ROMs, this phone has only been out a little over 60 days, hang tight there will be a ton of great things for this phone.
If you must trade for a mid line phone think about a used sgs, or an Infuse. If you really want a TOP end then go for an unlocked galaxy nexus.
Otherwise hang tight, and use bloat freezer, for the bloat on this phone, it is not bad for a stock build. If you don't like Blur, go get ADW launcher or Go Launcher Pro, or something like that.

Unless you got your phone online or over the phone, they aren't going to send you another phone, let alone an upgrade. If you got the Atrix 2 from a store, you're going to have to take it back to the store. If you've had the phone for more than a month, they will tell you to call warranty exchange to get a refurbished replacement, but not before spending copious amounts of time troubleshooting first. If you have been with AT&T for a long time, without any shutoffs, or a late payment history, you can try the "I'll cancel my service" routine, which usually doesn't work, because you will still have pay an ETF. Basically, they own you until your contract expires. It sucks, but that's how AT&T rolls.

Hello everyone, been reading these forums.for a while now. . Recently registered. I have a question you all might be able to help me out on. I've been having fun flashing roms left and right since the unlocking of the bootloader, love this phone. Screen, removable battery, speed, eveverything. Only downfall is my signal issues. Flashed new modem, tried just about everything, still everyone is choppy and.I'm dropping calls. Also been informed people have tried calling me with my phone not ringing. Coming from a razr maxx and before that OG razr, then droid x. My question to all is I have a friend who's willing to trade his razr maxx limited edition (red and black kevlar) and 100$, for my s3. What do you guys think? Stick with the s3? Wait for official JB? Hold out for Razr HD? Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Personally, I'd rather have the GS3. But if strong signal & battery life are your 2 number 1 features, then maybe the maxx is better. You should be able to do better than $100 cash in the trade.
You sure it's not that your S3 is defective? If you have access to another S3, maybe try it in the area you use your S3 most often.

I second this.
I'd Odin back to 100% stock/bloated and run it for a little see if the connectivity issue is resolved. If not bring it to verizon and tell them to fix it/replace it. I wouldn't take a step backwards to a Razr Maxx or no Maxx.... ick. hehe

I agree I think I would be extremely disappointed going to the Razr Maxx from the S3...I would think that it would be defective and flashing back to stock via odin, or having Verizon replace it for you would fix the problem...I think your best bet is to see if you can get better service with your S3 first before making a decision some might say your bound to regret.

Thanks guys, I LOL'ed at the iphone downgrade. As for the previous questions. The 4g in my area is pretty decent. With the maxx, I was always connected, but more importantly I never dropped a call. I am going to odin back to stock and give it a go for a bit. Ill keep you posted however, the question remains. . . If I continue to have problems, what do I do? I really don't want a Factory refurb. Idk, maybe I'll try dumping it off to someone on CL.

If the MAXX is the red and black employee edition, double check to make sure it can be transferred to another person. There was some fine print attached to the employee edition razors.

Keep the S3!
Definitely keep the S3, no question!

I agree I think I would be extremely disappointed going to the Razr Maxx from the S3.

I agree, my Son has a Razr Maxx (ALL he cares about is battery life) & I would hate to trade with him.
Coming from a rezound I've missed two calls. Regretting slightly. So I feel you. I'd go with the maxx if you need better reception, battery, and don't care too much for roms

That is a supremely dickheaded move. Since you don't want a refurb you are going to screw over someone else and sell them a $500 phone with a bad radio and no warranty. Real classy.

I don't normally do the +1 thing cuz it's kinda stupid... but +1
I've been an HTC "Incredible" series user from the original now up to the 4G. Unfortunately, I'm going on my 4th replacement because the apps won't save to the phone storage and delete upon restarting. The internal storage is too small for the app amount I have. You can't save apps to SD either. I have a 64GB with a bunch of music so an SD slot is a must.
I've never been a Samsung fan but after watching reviews I'm blown away. Verizon owes me. If I can get the switch do you think I'll enjoy this phone? I'd like pros, cons, etc. Very disappointed with HTC. This seems like the only worthy android phone out there.

The only big drawback of this phone is the bad reception. Which in turn causes battery drain. You should still be able to get 2-5 hours of screen on time anyways though. Just wished Samsung made better antennas because this would be a beast of a phone it they did.

It's not bad reception for all. You will have 14 days to return. Before you get the phone, jot down your reception dbm in all of your usual places and then compare them. Not scientific by any means but it will at least give you an idea.
In my case, is +-5 compared to my old incredible. At work, where I don't have Wi-Fi, I get better.

My signal is hectic everywhere. I can walk a few feet and go from 4 bars to 1 bar. Many other people are experiencing similar issues to me. I even went to the vzw store and an employee who had the s3 said the same thing about the reception. It is an issue, some people just live in great service areas so its not a problem for them.

I moved from the original HTC Incredible to the S3 a few week ago and I've been very happy. I'm not having reception issues like the other (Verizon is very strong in my area). Before I switched I as using a version of CM9 for the Incredible. It was working well, but I was getting to the point where it rebooted itself every other day or so. You'll really like the speed and bigger screen of the S3.
If you like some of the features of sense (like Facebook images on your contacts) etc. I can give you some of the free app's I've been using to give you the same effect.
I've owned a couple of Verizon HTC Phones (Rezound, Thunderbolt) and I doubt I will go back to HTC. The GS3 beats the HTCs in just about everything I can think of, and the reception is better than both of my HTC phones (both in my home area and areas frequently traveled to).
I switched from my old Droid Incredible (the original) to the GS3 and I couldn't be happier. Any samsung baked-in stuff can always be flashed away if you don't like it.

You can'toce apps to sd card with the s3

What? If you're saying can't move apps to SD I don't care as long as there is 16gb to store them. I use my SD for music, pics, etc. The Inc 4G won't allow them to save to phone storage just the small 1gb internal storage. This is an issue that hasn't been fixed and I'm not gonna wait.

Thunderbolt to S3
I just got my S3 last week. Previously I was on a HTC Thunderbolt for 1.5 years. Man, what a difference. Everything is better, faster on the S3. I haven't noticed data drops or bad reception like others on the thread but that might be because my TBolt was so bad in this area anything would be a huge improvement.
There is some crapware on it, but not as bad as what I had on the HTC. To me it doesn't cross the line. The phone is so powerful that I don't feel any lag from the crapware.
Overall, I'm hugely impressed by my first Samsung phone. I won't be going back to HTC anytime soon. The only outstanding issue is a nice sdcard slot that can take a 64gb card and no way to move anything over to it besides the camera's photos. Looking into some hacks to get my spotify cache files moved over.

I also came from the original incredible and I have to say there are some things that you need to get used to. For example no more sense. However functionablity hands down goes to samsung. Picnpic is great use it like every other day and occasionally I use svoice (mostly for calling/texting people in my car). Lock screen for both HTC and Samsung are very similar. For whatever choice you make both companies make great phones.
