[Q] Custom Kernel no Rom? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just need a short straight and to the point answer. Is it possible to have a kernel to overclock the Nexus S to 1.4 GHz without a ROM. I am on stock android 4.1.2 rooted. I don't want to install a ROM. If so please tell me which kernel, if it's stable for everyday use and how well it works. Thanks! Have a great Day!

As long as you have a custom recovery, you can flash custom kernel. Try trinity (derkernel.com) its experimental but very stable. Though it does not have bigmem. Also you have to be aware that your phone might not be able to handle over clock till that high and therefore reboot repeatedly. Hope it helps.

[Q] Backing up Kernels

So my Evo 4g has Fresh Evo installed and is overclocked to 1.26 ghz.
my question is, I know how to back up my Rom using Rom Manager but how do I back up my Kernel? I know that the Kernel I am using will not work with other Roms. I am very happy with my setup but still want to mess around with other Roms.
Also, if I restore to another Rom will it screw up if that Rom is not compatible with this kernel? Last thing, if i do want to go back, where can I get the stock Evo Kernel?
Please help.
From all my testing its seems that clockworkmod backs up the kernal as well. I have different kernals for all the roms that i use. someone correct me if im worng but my hydra kernal does not work with evervolv and when i swich between evervolv and stock roms the kernal changes too
So when you switch between Roms, do you use Rom Manager?
Thank you for your help.
When i switch I reboot into recovery then go to backup/restore and restore the one i want. so if i want my hydra kernal with stock rom ill restor that or if i want evervolv with the kernal it comes with ill choose it. I know its swaping kernals becasue evervolv wont boot correctly with hydra kernal

[Q] Overclocking without new kernel?

Hi. I want to overclock my i5800 but i don't want to install new kernel. I tried CM7 ROM and I liked more the original one.
So... Have any possibility to overclock without install a new kernel? Or... Install a kernel with ONLY a modification to overclock.
Since you are using CM7, you also have a new kernel.
The new kernel was required to make CM7 work.
If you also have Update 1 for Alpha 6 installed, I believe you can Overclock to 100 MhZ.
Dympy.
No. I'm not using CM7, I using a original ROM from samsung again. CM7 has a lot of fails at the moment.
I rooted my phone, so I can install kernels. But I don't want to change all kernel, only I wanted to overclock the CPU. It is possible? There is a kernel with the only change is the overclock?
First, you should flash new kernel ( recommend g3mod v2.2.1 OC). Then, install setcpu for OC. And link to download g3mod:
Code:
g3mod.com/g3rm/index.php?about=none
Yes, I know that if I install new kernel like g3mod I can overlock, the question is about don't change the original kernel....
Or the possibility to modify the original samsung kernel to ONLY open the possibility to overclock.
as far as my knowledge u wont OC ur process without install the kernel which supports over-clock...
You are saying that you want to drive a car at 400kmph but you don't wanna drive a veyron, and that's impossible
To overclock, you need to make some changes in the kernel, although it is possible to have a kernel with nothing more but overclocking, but why don't you use fugumod or g3mod.
I tried the CM7 ROM. And I don't liked the menus, the aspect, and the power button functions. I like how is from samsung, only I want more speed on CPU
I'm looking for the same solution! I like the original Samsung ROM, but I really want to overlock the CPU! I used Kyrillos' ROM v9.4, but I was not satisfied with it, so I've reinstalled the original ROM.
So pros, please give us a solution!

Flash a oc kernel with odin and keep your stock rom
Sent from my GT-I5800 using xda premium
on my test mobile I have installed the XXJPU stock ROM
flashed the G3 performance 1.9 kernel, works perfect
by default the kernel runs at 800MHz
install setcpu (root required) and you can adjust the cpu
so in two words:
stock ROM with stock kernel -> no cpu adjustment possible
stock ROM with other kernel -> set your cpu in a range you like

Use NVFlash to get CWM. Once you have that you can flash new ROM's, just don't forget to wipe and format /system first.
UV is under-volting your processor via a kernel. You can do that with Faux's kernel. Although for now, I suggest you stick with stock kernels and read up on what other kernels do before applying them.

Flash the Kernel thru CWM and you wont have to worry about the counter.
no Not all Kernels are compatible with all roms, but we only have four right now any way. and one is a CM7 kernel so you only use that with CM7.
the others are Romracers stockish kernel, Da g's OC kernel, and the Stock kernel itself.
just read the kernel OP it will tell you if its for rogers or at&t.
i personallly dont like to recomend roms and kernels....so my advice is flash away and find one that you like
good luck
thanks for the reply... im interested in the oc kernel, have you tried it? and do you think its worth it to oc? is it stable? i know its has a fast processor on stock so i dont know if overclocking pros really outweigh the cons.

i personally LOVE to OC, but Da G's kernel does have its hikups....and i have been using his Kernels since 0.1 and its now on .43 the overclocking is great, it does seem to make the roms run smoother, but i seemed to suffer alot of SOD's while using his kernel. but they are patches that you can run, like the one in TPCs Rom Thread that may fix that.
but not eveyone experiances the same stuff. again i would just try them and you make like them.
the stock kernel is fast though, but once we get a stable OC kernel believe i will be oc'ing to the max trying to melt my phone.....
Just flashed the CM 7 kernel with the Sky Ice Cream ROM. Now my phone won't go past the Samsung boot screen and I can't get it into recovery. NEED HELP PLEASE!!

Choose Kernel for Android 4.0.4 Stock.

Hello guys.
I search a kernel for my android 4.0.4 stock . What did you propose ?
I wait your anser for a best kernel.
Nexus S : 4.0.4
what you need from kernel? is speed - you need one kernel, if battery life - other, if mods - third...
I use SimpleKernel 1.20, but it has problem with voodoo-colors.
Truthfully there's no best "kernel". It all comes down to what you want from that kernel. So you should try them all and found out the right kernel for you. For example, if you want stability, simple kernel or thamalus kernel is the right one. If you want lots of mods, Air, Matr1x and Glados would be right. If you want pure performance, Trinity would be good for you.

Thx for your reply.
I search battery life, if i can, modify the CPU.
But really stable for android 4.0.4 stock.
I have download Glados Kernel,
He Work perfectly for android 4.0.4.
Another kernel i don't wan't to try it, because is not certified for 4.0.4.
I personally prefer Simple Kernel. It has BLN, which since I've had the phone, is a must have. For some reason, Voodoo Control gave me issues with my mic messing up, even with suggested fixes, so I use the one with just the BLN add on. Experimentation is the best way to find out. Been running Simple Kernel for 3 days with no reboots or FCs.
I use air kernel. On snoop and smartassv2.some reboots during the week but I think it stock 4.0.4 and not kernel related.
