Hi,
Has anyone purchased a car mount for their desire?
My Desire should hopefully arrive tomorrow and I'm trying to get some accessories for it! The car kit is fairly essential, I have the bluetooth radio that supports A2DP so I'm very excited!
Could anyone recommend a decent car mount?
I have a suction one for my N95 but I think I'd rather one that clips into one of the vents.
I`m waiting for Brodit to release one for the desire, supposed to be soon.
I used their active kit for my G2/Hero and its good. Easy to fit into your car, took 5mins, you have to buy depending on your make/model and where you want it mounted.
Look at the 'Desire Accessories':
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/trailblazer-universal-car-charger-and-holder-p22954.htm
Had it for several days... its cheap £9.99 and holds the phone and charges it as well! Delivery is megaquick too.
I read somewhere that the nexus one brodit is supposed to work with the desire - who's brave enough to try it now!?

Brodit have told me its imminent and to check the website for release (dsldevelopments dot com) within 14 days.
I've used them for years, just replacing the holder on the mount for each new phone.
MOD EDIT - Moved to Accessories forum
Hi,
I was really suprised when tried my old brodit holder for iphone 3G - its almost ideally fitted for Desire too No need to buy new one, hurrey!

Silly question, but wont the Brodit Mobile Phone Active Holder Tilt Swivel for Nexus One be ok for the Desire? It's on the dlsdevelopments website.

Ask brodit theyre fast at resonding. I`d say it might not work as the connections might not align up. I`d try and wait a few weeks for the desire one
to appear.

We're out of stock of Nexus One - but we get some I will test it.
Desire Brodit are on the site coming soon - but there is no date.

Really liked the look of this but I have an Audi A3 and the car cigarette lighter is housed within the ashtray about 3 inches from the outer dashboard. I doubt the trailblazer will fit.
Also it looks like the holding parts would go right over the volume controls on the Desire like it does on the HD2.
MINI WEIGHTED CUSHION FRICTION MOUNT with UNIVERSAL HOLDER for MOBILES SMART PHONES MP3 (SKU 5043)
I have just ordered this one for my desire, wanted something that wasnt a sucker mount and I dont like the airvent mounts, I also wanted something that meant that I could turn the desire from horizontal to vertical very easily without having to dismantle the device or struggle in doing so, lastly I wanted something that meant I could easily fit into another car quickly if i needed it, found this and it seems to fit the bill nicely, I have read up on the reviews on this mount with a garmin attatchment and they have all come back hugely favourable, love the fact that if i wanted to add another phone to the mount in the future all i have to do is to buy another back plate instead of the entire mount. was sceptical at first haven never seen a friction dash mount before but after reading the reviews and watching the video on the link i have provided and it only being £18.32 inc delivery i thought why not, will post up when i have received it and let you know how it is
buybits.com/product.aspx?id=5043
I have ordered the Nexus Brodit mount and it in fact does not fit as the Desire is 0.5mm wider and thicker.
So i have now ordered the Desire one from morpethmobiles.co.uk and should be receiving early next week so will post some pics

As I have said here, I think they may be selling the Nexus mount as the Desire mount.
i suspect that aswell because i talked to brodit directly 3/4 days ago and they said it should take at least 2 weeks for the holder to be available.
<START RANT>
It annoys me some shops are selling Nexus accessories as Desire ones - like this dock and also Clove are marketing the Proporta Alu Leather case for both the Nexus and the Desire.
If Brodit and Proporta think it necessary to redesign their accessories to fit the Desire, shops shouldn't be selling the Nexus versions as if they were designed for the Desire. I am sure Brodit and Proporta would have been delighted if their existing accessories would fit as they would increase their market without all the new R&D costs.
I would be very annoyed if I bought something as designed specifically for the Desire, only to find in a few weeks that the manufacturer had brought out a version that really was designed just for the Desire.

Anyone know of a car dock that would work for the Epic / if they're coming out with a dedicated dock for the Epic anytime soon?
I haven't heard about the Samsung dock, but I did email proclipusa.com to find out about their's and they said 4-6 weeks.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Just get any hard back cover case and a garmin gps mount. Buy some double sided industrial adhesive and you can make a case for ~10 bucks...
Anyone heard any news on this? Either when the official Samsung car dock will be released or any 3rd party dock? I've been holding out on buying a universal solution in hopes that a custom solution is coming soon, but I'm getting impatient

On September 2nd, ProclipUSA told me "The holder for the Epic will be available in approx 4-6 weeks."
I just checked http://www.proclipusa.com and it isn't there yet.
I'm hoping/assuming the ProClip USA version will account for the 3.5 headphone jack (i.e., leaving space to plug in a cable.) For now, I'm using a Gomadic window mount I had from my previous phone. Have to plug in the cables every time, but other than that works fine.
Here's the deal: ProClip may not make mounts for the Skyrocket because of low demand. There's not enough of us out there they think. We NEED ALL SKYROCKET OWNERS to send a brief request for information on Skyrocket mounts to Proclip. It's stupid just get a suction cup cell phone holder off dealextreme.. I've been using mine fine and the skyrocket fits nice and snug. Don't waste the companies time because there is a low demand and that ain't a lie

Yes you're right, it's stupid to use an ugly generic holder when we could have very slick custom holders.
I've used the Proclip holders with my HD2 and Inspire, there is no comparison between these and the crappy suction cup holders. Pro-clips look right at home in a BMW or a Chevy Truck. Very nice interface. If you like to "do things right" Proclip is for you.
I to have used proclip for my old iphone. They make good products. A tad expensive tho.
Email sent. I would be interested in getting another one for my SR.
My wife has the suction cup thingy for Galaxy2 from Tmobile and I dont like it, its too bulky and in the way of road vision.
Guess what they are 5 mins away from where i live. I already used their mount the best out there. So will go personally and make request.

Adjustable Holder with Tilt Swivel
I emailed them about a custom mount a couple of weeks ago, and got the same response. I then went ahead and ordered the following item, and it actually fits really well. After using ProClip for my devices for the past 4 years (Tilt, Tilt 2, Captivate), I couldn't go a day longer with my SR sitting in my cup holder.
The nice thing about the adjustable holder is that it should work for pretty much any phone I ever buy again in the future. There is minimal play from front to back, but that's only if I use my hand to move it. When sliding my phone into the holder, it's just as tight as the custom holders have always been. While driving, it stays put. Another plus, is that if I ever decide to buy a case, I'm confident that it will work with this same holder.
AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II - Adjustable Holder with Tilt Swivel
Item #: 875214
---------- Post added at 10:11 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:07 AM ----------
Oh, and to clarify. I HATE HATE HATE adjustable holders, but this one is done right. It's the same solid plastic build of all previous holders, but the sides are tightened down with thumb screws. I just placed my phone in the holder, squeezed the sides of the holder relatively tight and tightened the screws, and it's been perfect for the past week.
I sent an email letting them know that there are Rogers, T Mobile and Docomo versions of the same phone. Hope it helps.

I asked them about that. They've tried the SR in it and it works, but is wobbly. I went ahead and ordered one so I have something to use in the meantime. Maybe with a very thin cover on the phone it'll work well? I'll post up when I get it.
One thing about the universal holders, they don't have charging built in. It's nice to slide your phone in the holder and have it charging.
It's ironic, I got the SR over the Vivid partially because of charging mount compatibility. As it turns out, Proclip is going to make a Vivid mount, but not a SkyRocket mount. Is the Vivid really going to outsell the Skyrocket by that much?
got a fairly standard reply back from my request... though it does say they plan on making it.. and yes i see the error in the first sentence too.. but that's how it was sent to me lol

I also find it strange that I see better accessories support the Vivid than the skyrocket. On launch day the rep I bought my phone from told me that they had not sold a single Vivid but they had been selling skyrockets all morning. That questionnaire they sent out had specific questions wanting to know why we chose the SR over the Vivid. I assumed they wanted to know why the Vivid wasn't selling well.

A Proclip USA SkyRocket holder is in the make. It almost worked in the Infuse and Galaxy II holders (T-Mobile/Sprint). They have to make some adjustments to have it custom for the SkyRocket.
Email Proclip to get yourself added to the list. They will email you when they have them. But they have many holders to make, just be patience. The will come through.
Just got this email looks like the emails we sent worked
Also noticed they are a local company here in the Chicago area, not far from where I live LOL

Quick Stats:
Name : Owl CarPad/G,
What is it?: Wireless Qi Charger for your car. it uses a hard-wired Cigarette lighter adapter to power the wireless Qi charging pad. (See pics below for the exact cable provided)

Where can I buy it? : Here's a link to Owl's website where you can order. http://owlpad.net/carpad-for-nexus-4/
Moon has stated they are awaiting final production, and should start shipping around middle of next week!. So for right now, any orders placed are "pre-orders" and will ship out very soon!
WORLDWIDE SHIPPING IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE! Owl will ship using EMS from Korea. Final leg in the USA is delivered by USPS. You can try using this site to track your package via EMS: http://service.epost.go.kr/trace.RetrieveEmsTraceEngTibco.postal (hint: press cancel on the 2 pop ups that come up.. they're in Korean, and I'm not positive what they say, but this will bring you to the tracking number input area)

4 sets for $235
If you only want the CarPad, and don't need the mounting hardware, because you'll plan on using your own 17mm ball solution (basically you'll just receive the charging pad with side-prongs, 17mm ball joint female end on the back, screw nut for attaching to 17mm ball mount of your choosing and the cigarette power adapter) - $57
Also on sale - OwlPad for desktop + CarPad for Car.
Just $100 at http://owlpad.net/owlpadcarpad-for-nexus-4-n-qi/
XDA User Narcopolypse is also taking names for a list of orders he'll be making as well, if you'd rather someone else handle the shipping and then ship them to you locally.
What are the specifics: CarPad is Qi functional and works well with the Nexus 4. Tested both with TPU case, Diztronic Matte Black Case, Official Bumper, and bare-back. The average charge on an idle phone is around +600mA and with load of Spotify streaming music, Android GPS navigation, BlueTooth connected to head-unit, and screen on at lowest brightness, the charger gets nearly +100-200mA
What does it look like?:
Initial images upon receiving my test unit : http://imgur.com/a/K29tM
CarPad in-use images from Moon (the Marketing and Sales manager of OwlPad) : http://imgur.com/a/MZPti
Images of the CarPad removed from the mounting hardware: http://imgur.com/a/PbEtx
Some test results for quick reference:
This first one is just the phone sitting on the charger, no Bluetooth, no GPS, no Music. Mobile data ON. Screen OFF.
The test was from 8:09am to 8:15am
http://i.imgur.com/hB01A1e.png
The second test was with GPS on and navigation app running, streaming music via Spotify, using BlueTooth to my car head unit, screen ON at lowest brightness.
The test was from 8:26am to 8:34am
http://i.imgur.com/kydLRAU.png
As you can see, with the phone just idling, there’s a decent charge provided to the phone.
With everything running, I’m still getting a charge to the phone and the mA amount recorded never dips below zero.

Here's some of the other solutions that should work with the CarPad Ball-Joint Back.
Sticky Dash Suction Mount This is the one I bought : http://amzn.com/B0077B9K2E
The above is the same as this, but for some reason, that one is cheaper with the holder attachment than this one is solo : http://amzn.com/B005V1L7W8
Vent Clip mount : http://amzn.com/B0015A6YN6
Cig Lighter port stalk : http://amzn.com/B000BP8GQO
For you Brodit / ProClip users out there, i BELIEVE this is what you would need : http://amzn.com/B002ACP2FY
You can basically look up Arkon 17mm ball on Amazon and have a lot of options to play with for the back of the CarPad. It's nice they adapted it to a standard ball mount so we can use these other options if needed.
-----------------------------------------------------
XDA user narcopolypse has said that he would be ordering larger stock of these for the US, and selling them here in the states to help with shipping issues/times (considering the manufacturer is in Korea, shipping can sometimes take longer/cost more. PM narcopolypse if you'd like to be added to a list of users interested in purchasing.
Currently you can contact Moon from OwlPad directly at : [email protected]. He's in South Korea, so they're time is off from us if you are in the West.

Q/A:
Q) Are the grips on the owlpad rubberized or fashioned in some way that does not hurt the phone from the constant taking out and putting back in?
A) There's a slight texture to the side prongs, but they are just plastic. I have been sliding it in and out using the LG bumper, TPU cases, and the bare phone, and no signs of problems scuffing or anything.
I recently bought the Diztronic Matte Black case, and it's about the same size as my other TPU cases, but because of its matte finish, and the way it's designed, it's a little harder to slide in from the top, and I place one side in and then press to slide in the other side now.
The bare phone is a perfect fit for this, just barely needing any pressure to push it in from the top.
Q) Can the CarPad be turned off without unplugging the unit, or otherwise pulling the cigarette lighter adapter?
A) Yes, The small LED light at the bottom (normally used to show you if the CarPad is charging (RED) or Idle (Green) is also a BUTTON. you can press this at any time to turn off the CarPad entirely. Pressing it again will turn the charging feature back on.
Q) Will my Phone / CarPad get hot because of Qi Charging?
A) Yes it will, but most recent tests of the last (final?) version of the CarPad/G have shown that the temperature while even running GPS and screen on doesn't get much hotter than possibly 42C. The charger will continue to charge through higher temperatures, but Qi / Inductive charging in general IS affected by heat, so the hotter the conditions, the less power gets pushed to the phone's battery. It's just how induction works.
Q) If my phone is dead (battery to zero/shut down) will the Owl CarPad charge it?
A) YES it will! I had mine die recently while out with family, and when I placed it on the pad, after about 15 minutes I started it back up and it had about 6% charge on it. Apparently Qi charging doesn't need to have the phone on to charge the phone.
Q) Also could someone please confirm what type of connection the power cable has please, is it a standard cigarette lighter plug or USB?
A) The adapter is a hard-wired cigarette lighter plug, and the end of the cable is a 3.5mm coaxial power connector.(Similar to these types of connectors http://i.imgur.com/P0BRqk3.jpg )
Q) Will the Owl CarPad charge my phone to 100%?
A) In tests, it seems it'll charge to about 90% then go into "Complete mode" or "Idle" Others have stated it can get to about 95% as well.
Q) Will this work with a TPU case or similar? What about the Official Bumper?
A) The size of the holder prongs is just a little smaller than the phone when naked. they are tensioned/bendable to spring back on their own (no mechanical motion, just hard plastic forms that can be bent to move the phone in and out of the mount. I've used a generic TPU case, a Diztronic Matte black Case, an LG Official Bumper and also naked phone, and the charger has always provided charge to my phone with no issue. Some larger / thicker cases may hinder the Qi charging ability, due to distance from the back-plate, but a standard soft case, or a hard case shouldn't pose any issues with the Qi functionality.
Q) How long is the cigarette lighter power cable? My 120v/12w power port is in my center console on the bottom, totally forgot about that.
A) The cable has a coiled section in the middle to allow for additional length. The whole cable measures 29 inches total. 9.5" from the cig jack, then 7.5" of coiled cable, then 12" of cable again to the coaxial power connector.
The coiled section can be pulled to around 36 inches, but that's a lot of tension. I'd say doubling it to about 15" is as far as I'd ever have it taught.
I drive a 2010 Mazda 3 and my cig jack is at the bottom of my dash in the center console area.(think near your right knee) and I have my CarPad mounted on the top of my dash near my gauge cluster. There's plenty of length, and in fact all of the coiled portion. Stays in my console shelf/door area.
Here are some photos to show its construction.
http://i.imgur.com/3qmyFXS.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/cNijdTh.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/riOoKBa.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/rLHsOna.jpg
Q) Can I use a different Adapter or cable to power the CarPad?
A) (This is directly quoted from Moon) "One thing you do have to know is that Cigar jack is regulated to fixed 12V.
It is not only control 12V but also it gives some positive effects on the charging pad. So it shouldn't use any other than Owl provide."
I had mentioned that they also worked on the cable to provide the best solution for the CarPad. Because of their work on this, the heat issues on the adapter and the CarPad itself are alleviated, and help keep the charger charging during higher temperatures. I'd suggest not using another cable solution, if only that the one provided is engineered for the best performance of the CarPad.
-----below is the initial post of this thread, for posterity----
Hey everyone,
I think I've stumbled across an awesome product, but it looks to only be available in Korea right now.
owlcharger.com/bbs/board.php?bo_table=gallery_eng&wr_id=26
Basically it's a Qi Certified Car mount, which, for the iPhone and Galaxy S2, they've made charging cases to go along with them, but in all reality, our Nexus 4's should just start charging once docked.
I've done about 2 hours of digging around and can't find anything about them other than their Korean stuff, and no availability here in the U.S.A.
On their LinkedIn web page ( linkedin.com/company/owl-technology ) they state Arkon.com for selling in the U.S.A. however Arkon's website doesn't show any products such as these.
Anyone have any advice on how we can get our grubby mitts on this dock? ordering from overseas?
EDIT: owlpad.net seems to have the info we need for international orders. I have an email out to them now about the ability to order just the charger and mount without a sleeve.

+1 I don't see anything that says Qi. Only RF.

Found a way to purchase outside of Korea.
owlpad.net
Here's the international instructions to order.
owlpad.net/home-2/
It's $80 shipped to the U.S.A. about 2-5 days processing and between 7-10 days to ship from Korea, and comes with a 1 year warranty.
This is probably the product we need to order - owlpad.net/owl-autopad/ but it doesn't show a price or order info on that page.
I've emailed them to ask about the availability of just the mount with inductive charger, without a phone sleeve, since we won't need it.
The other pages for the iphone and GS2 show order info and price, ( owlpad.net/carpad-for-galaxy-s2/ ) so I'm assuming we may just need to contact them to let them know we don't need a sleeve and the price may be cheaper.
I'll update when I get a response from them.

Conclusion:
Qi standard Wireless Charging Sleeves can be charged on Owl Car Charging Pad.
Power Mat products and OWL products are quite compatible
But the present Qi module and the Power Mat product are not compatible.
Owl Products are in principle most compatible with Qi products.
So I assume it MAY work. Well good luck to you! Let us know if you get it or not!
I've been emailing back and forth with the VP of Marketing and Sales at Arkon.
He said they are familiar with OWL and their charger is pretty much similar.
He said they have put off introducing their version of the product for another 3-6 months at least, in order to wait for more mobile manufacturers to include the Qi charging standard. I believe they would rather only sell the mount and not worry about the sleeves.
He said they have working models in their engineering dept. And suggested if i want the solution now, to order from the OWL website.
Undoubtedly,. they'll probably come out with it next Summer, and I'll have had the OWL for a while, so when that time comes, i'll be on hand to give my input on how it works.
I'll be making a purchase this week or next probably.
I'll make sure to update everyone and try to do a video review when it comes in.
Ive gotten in touch with Moon over at OWL, and he said because they dont have the Nexus 4 released over there in Korea yet, that they have yet to test it with their "Auto Pad".
Im going to be ordering one in the next week and if it works ill update the thread and try to do a video review on it. All signs point to it working.
Also, their solution is basically their pad built onto an Arkon mount. So purchasing from them is getting about the same thing that Arkon will be producing later.
Wait for my update before making an impulse buy. I'd hate for anyone else to get an impulse purchase and then it not even work.
I'll be the lab rat for the community.
Very interested in how this turns out. Thanks for taking one for the team!
Not sure if this helps anyone but saw this a while back then saw this thread the two didn't come together till now anyways http://www.convenientpower.com/1/product.php?page=16

I've been digging around for this all morning and I can't find it for sale anywhere. I'm guessing its not for sale at this time but will hopefully be shortly. I've emailed different with companies about a qi certified car mount and 2 out of 3 said they are researching them at this time and because more phones are slated to get this wireless qi technology that we will see them come out this following year but neither gave me a eta.
Those are prototypes, probably not available for sale until some other company licenses them. The Energizer single pad seems to be a rebrand of their single model. Probably the dual one is also based on their prototype.

Beat you to the punch. I have also been in touch with Moon as I am going to be their US distributor. I have a batch of test units on their way right now. As soon as they arrive I will update this thread as to whether or not it works with the Nexus 4. I will also be testing it with some other Qi devices as well. Assuming all goes to plan I will start listing the car and desktop pads on my ebay store within a couple of weeks so you can buy them from a US seller. I will also be more than willing to allow local pickup for anyone in the Salt Lake area.

When you say you have a "batch" of units on the way..... does that mean you'll have a few extra that you would distribute for multiple people to test?
Say, for example, people who live in Texas could test in a hotter climate?

Or maybe, someone in Idaho could test on a colder climate?

Ha ha. Very funny you guys.
Don't worry, If all goes well I should have them up for sale before Christmas. I'm thinking I'll start out with just the car docks since there are already plenty of Qi desktop pads in the wild.
The one huge advantage these have in a desktop setting however is that they use an adaptive charging controller. They will actually switch automatically between charging standards so you can charge a Qi enabled phone or a Powermat enabled phone. They said they might even function with old Touchstone receivers so I'll give that one a go too since I've Touchstone modded my last three phones.

Cool! Sign me up for one! :good:
I just recently got a Nexus 4, and my girlfriend got a Galaxy S3 for christmas. I know the S3 doesn't have native wireless charging (requires some sort of adapter to the pinout under the back cover, I think?), but I was wondering if there's either: A) a way I can add wireless charging to the S3 that would be compatible with the recently released charging orb through the play store, or B) an option that would somehow work for both, if the S3 can't be made compatible with the orb.
I made an effort to search through other questions to make sure this hadn't been asked before, so forgive me if it has and I missed it!
Rumors have it that Samsung is developing a kit, if its Qi compatible then all Qi chargers will work with it.
The real place to ask the question is in the S3 forums. If they make it Qi youre good, if not then its on them.
I got the adapter from fast tech for the S3 (cheapest I could find it at $15 including shipping) for my Boyfriend's S3. I have a Nexus 4. Once the adapter and my Qi chargers arrive I will report back and let you know. I did not order the orb, but I did get the cheap $35 one from fast tech, and the double Duracell one from amazon.
I think I should get at least the adapter and the double duracell one next week. We also have a variety of cases for the s3 to test with.
I'm hoping that orb will work for galaxy s3. Not only I'm getting useless nexus 4i also ordered the orb. My wife might kill me. Lol. We got Verizon and at least a year and a half on contract left.

I'm using the cheapo uniden qi charger for the iPhone with my nexus 4. Got it at walgreens drug store for like 12$ and hacked for the n4 it works perfectly.

I'm using the Energizer dual charger (Qi certified) to charge both my N4 and my wife's GS3. I bought an after market Qi receiver for the GS3 from eBay. It fits under the stock back cover. Works great.
I like the energizer unit since I can do both phones at the same time.

I, too, have an S3 and a N4, which are sharing one wireless charger (Power Qi). I had to buy a Qi receiver and apply it on top of the battery for S3. It makes the back of S3 hump a little bit, but the battery cover still snaps in. Of course, S3 feels heavier too.
That said, things work fine. Charging faster than computer usb 2.0 and slower than wall charger, but I can grab it an run whenever I want.
Review is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181042&page=6
In Vietnam it's about 37 USD per unit and the receiver is about 10 USD.
