Proton kernal q&a - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

So is this new kernal a true JB kernal or is it a modified GB kernal like ICS? Also if is a true JB kernal is this replacing the Aries kernal or is is still in development, thanks and flame away
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app

I'm pretty sure its a modified GB kernel. Aries would still be better, it would offer better battery life and would probably be a more stable kernel. I think all that's left now is the sleep of death issue.
I don't know if the Aries kernel is still in development, team acid said that they will give eriks JB kernel "some love"
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app

My reading of the TA attention is that they'll try to get Proton closer to the other Herring kernels' levels... as in, wifi works, 4G doesn't reboot, etc. Not that they're looking at it as the replacement for Aries.
Note that this is my interpretation though, and is not official in any way.

the aries kernel is still in development as, if I know bryan and how stubborn he can be, it would be an essential asset for our phone.

this is true. each kernel has it's own flavor just like roms. by us helping out and getting it fully functional, that would just add another flavor for people to taste. since it was not started by us, we will not claim it as our own. we just hope that whoever we helped would credit where it's due.

[KERNEL] Cyanogenmod Skyrocket Kernel 0.43pre v4

Hi!
This is a CM7 kernel built for skyrocket, based on my 0.43pre kernel, orientation etc. should be hunky-dory under CM7 now, and overclocking should be good
Give 'er a shot if you use CM7!
AT&T CM7 v4
Rogers CM7 v4
v4 - fixed usb storage mounting, optimizations, added Android USB Accessory support to match CM7 ROM, adjusted init scripts to allow 192MHz
Further notes re: overclocking etc: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20438625&postcount=28
Please leave any CM7-specific feedback here, anything that applies to the general kernel stuff in my other thread if you would
BTW, if you found BLN (Backlight Notification) was not activating for enough notifications with ROMs using touchwiz framework, this one should activate BLN for all notifications, making it much nicer and useful!
Muchos thanks to XAviierG for kicking my butt on IRC to get this out the door after much procrastination

I LOVE YOU.
Flashing this, and CM7 right now, all the problems with CM7 are now hacked out!
Nice job!!!!!

I would rage, but my phone won't even deep sleep with wifi on, so I don't mind.
I'll just stick with LTE, I'm trying to see how much data I can use this month, and see if I can get a throttle warning anyways.
EDIT: What's the IRC? I want to listen. :3

Does ICS youtube/widget work with these cyanogenmod builds? I read theres some framework from icecream sandwich in them. Does this kernel fix call audio without gps on issue?
Still tracking NFC problem, it is on my to-do, took it out for a jaunt and bluetooth/wifi/cell data/rotation/etc. are working great - did seem to get a little hotter than TPC v3 ROM when overclocked though, possibly due to the OS using more GPU resources?
I have not run CM7 ROM at all before a few hours ago, so am not familiar with the call-audio-gps-bug. But I just turned GPS off and called my voicemail a bunch, seems fine!
Did you guys flash the cyanogenmod build in this forum or is the Tmobile version updated more than the build here? Thats my last question!! Thanks alot for the progress here. I miss all the development in the Captivate forum but I know we'll get there soon.

Roms & Ports

What's the difference between a rom and a port?
Roms/custom roms are built for your specific phone
Ports are roms built for another phone but are made usable for your phone-the rom is tweaked a little to work with a different phone.
Example: theres a rom for an htc inspire thats really popular, a dev may ask permission to port it he will then tweak the files to work with our phone allowing us to flash the rom on ours.

There are many ports in the superthread. They are all possible from the i9000 Captivate phone.
Linuxbozo made the hellraiser kernel for us to make it possible.
The known bug on that kernel is the first call sound issue when you first boot. Just toggle the speaker once.
Native Infuse ROM are Zeus, Numas, Caty, Bionix, Victory and... Vagabond.

In your opinion, which one is the best?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
That's very hard to say. They all have some characteristics that sets them apart. There are some features in some ROMs that are not in others.
You kinda have to look thru the op's and determine which is for you.
You really can't go wrong. Once you have a good installation, and it is stable, for most users, just walk away.
The flash addicts will try something else, looking for another fix.
For example, the Vegabond I put together, is debloated. I have maximize battery life short of undervolting, but that is not likely with a stock kernel. HDMI will work w/ stock.
dman and bigfau made great roms.
Gtg's Infused -he a master dev.
nop's a master but we dont see 'im much
The ports have their own merits. I have not tried CM7 or MIUI.
I used CM7 for quite a while and really liked it, but I now need Bluetooth, so I have switched to Zeus. I really like CM7 with cyanbread, so I am trying to reproduce the look, might have to try theming. Zeus seems to be the hot infuse rom, from my experience, seems like almost everyone is running it.

which ROM is the fastest?

I am running ICS (AOKP?) on my G2x, and have installed many apps. Recently I noticed that the phone kind of runs slow - sometimes laggy when I open such as apps as pandora and google docs, etc. That makes me wonder if I should look for a faster ROM. Which one is the fasted? ICS is generally more resource hungry? or Gingerbread could be lighter and faster generally speaking?
Go with an OC/UV kernel instead. You can try faux049b5 or morfics or harsh 1904 or 1504 with OC. They are all good in their own sense.
The respective links of the kernels are in the development section.
Anything besides ICS
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Well, there's a few things we need to know. Who's ROM are you using? EaglesBlood, Hellfire, CM9, Team Kangs? And what kernel are you running? The stock included in the ROM or did you flash a different one?
I'm using EaglesBlood ICS 4.0.3 with stock Faux Kernel. I didn't have that issue. That's one recommendation. Depending on which one your using will depend in other recommendations. If you decide you use AOSP (MIUI) instead I recommend Stormaggedon's ROM's. MIUI.us kept giving me force crash errors for force crash errors for a force crash error for reporting the force crash on start up. Didn't matter how long it sat nor how many times I restarted it.
Try EaglesBlood first. I'm about to clash Hellfire ICS with the harsh kernel. I'll let you know how that runs.
Edit: HellFire ICS with Harsh Kernel works nice. Its smooth, no lag, oh and in the developers settings have kill all apps when you leave them. Try that as well.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA
Pretty much all the roms are fast on here. Its what you use your phone for and install on it that eventually start slowing it down.
I know I personally favor the hellfire phoenix rom, but asking or saying which rom is the best/fastest is kinda ignorant as they all are the best for their own reasons.

Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Go with any GB rom (CM7.2 RC1 for me with Faux kernel), they are much smoother and faster than ICS roms currently are. I have tried every ICS rom (even with harshs latest kernels as of yesterday) and while they have made great strides I find CM7.2 RC1 to still be much smoother and faster (especially under heavy usage).
trying hellfire 2.1 with faux kernel

CM9 or AOKP?

what do u use and with what kernel? and what is the best set up?
You can't have other people choosing for you! lol everyone will have their opinions and liking towards different roms. I personally go for CM9 + InstigatorX's kernels. Some people go for AOKP or Chimaira other AOSP based and use Instigator's kernels. From there you have to choose which version or which governer is to your liking, if you prefer a certain setting like performance ones or power saving ones etc...
As for CM9 and AOKP I am an avid CM9 user but have used AOKP before. AOKP has a lot of customization right out of the box, CM9 is going from the ground up so they add features slowly and is constantly update almost once a day. AOKP they release one update every say 10-15 days~ and occasional milestone which will have more features than fixes. I like seeing updates gradually come and look forward to them on a daily bases thats why I stuck with CM9 and I like it for its stability. I've had a few FC's on the older AOKP but those are probably gone now with the latest milestone but features and readily available tweaks, the unicorn has them all (AOKP). I would personally make a nandroid back up and test them out yourself to see if its to your liking. My preference may not be the same as yours so its each to their own. :good:
Thanks for the reply bro, just wondering what the peeps on here were using, I think I'm going to stick with cm9, I really dig it, but I was wondering what kernel should I add, its a big mess with a bunch of releases on that forum lol

More 'features' in 4.0. But it may bootloop you. If you're ok with dealing with that then 4.0. I myself am trying to decide and I don't want to deal with bootloops so I just, right this second, decided to go with 2.2.1

I would go with 4.0. I was having trouble with my phone looping when I put on UCLF6 modem, I switched to the newest kernel and everythings been smoother. I would also say don't be afraid to try things out. Usually you will know what you like and don't like after you test a few configurations.
Just backup and keep multiple versions of the kernel in your SD so you can switch just in case it fails to boot. I'm currently using 4.0 badass underclocked to 1.1ghz when idling/light use and use smartassv2 when I play games.

I use Chimera RC2 and it is amazing with InstigatorX kernel. Had some trouble getting it to run at first but finally got it to run. As for setup, I prefer performance so I am working on getting it to stabilize with 1.7-1.8 OC. I am still testing governors and UV settings but SmartassV2 benchmarked pretty damn high compared to badass and ondemand.
RC3-(Official?) should correct issues and may be released today

In my humble opinion, CM9 tends to be a touch more stable than AOKP. But remember AOKP at its essence is CM9 with extra features thrown on, so it's bound to have the potential for a few more bugs. But both are very stable and won't give you any more issues than any other ROM really. Basically it's a question if AOKP's features are something you feel you want. I recommend spending about a week with both and then deciding.

Which ROM is Your Favorite?

First off, this is not "which is the best", this is "which is your favorite". People have their allegiances, I get it, but for those who are new or who want to try a different ROM, a thread here in the Blaze forums would be useful! I also understand there are other threads like this elsewhere in xda, but I want this to be Blaze exclusive!
Ok, so which ROM is your favorite and why? Be descriptive, let our community know!

My favorite ROM is Thomas.raines ParanoidAndroid! Second ROM I've ever flashed on this Blaze. I love all the features it has from looking like a Phablet to having a tablet UI! One day, I hope it would have the Halo notifications! But of course. We will have to wait for that CM10.1 everyone is waiting for!
Paranoid Android by TR is definitely a favourite. Ran it for a while, but needed stability for work so I went back to CM10 + BlueLightning kernel.
ParanoidAndroid was my second ROM as well and love it. Still love it. If only it had all the sound mods that LiquidSmooth has! The ability to change UI is awesome, the split screen settings menu, and the LZ kernel baked right in are major highlights! Recommend PA to anyone on this forum!

Started on Beastmode's slim bean, have currently been running all the latest Cm10 nightlies. With BlueLightning X2 kernel. Still switch back to slim for a change. Super stable and great battery life on both, can't go wrong.
Props to Racing for AOKP too, along with BlueLightning.
Bugless Beast back in the day on Droid 1! I guess because that was my first Android phone I rooted and the best ROM of the tons I tried!
Not the first time I 'rooted' 'jailbroke' or otherwise gained #su but I LOVED installing new homebrew applications on my PSP handheld gaming system too!
My next favorite ROM? The one developed by someone not trying to sell it to the attention if a kid. Seriously I can't talk professionally about this kind of stuff if I tell my co-worker I'm rooted running CandyCane Super Sweet K.K. for KUSTOM KERNEL on a modified JellyBean android custom ROM called Orange Sherbert Swirl and the amazing Technicolor Steamboat.
Yeah I made all that up just to get my point across! I felt it was necessary lol.

Racing's AOKP. Smooth & stable, no crazy bells & whistles. I like the ROM Control settings. Not interested in split screen phablet stuff, the screen's not big enough for that. Only issus is CPU clock & governor settings not sticking after reboot, but I don't need to reboot that often.

Racings AOKP-NOS injector-Racings Blue lightning X2 Kernel-AC!D Engine V5. I run underclocked at 1.296 most of the time unless i need the extra power. The combo is extremely smooth and stable. Never had a reboot, absolutely no lag, great gaming performance(oc'd GPU included with X2 helps), my average daily battery life is 12-13 hours with 4-4.5 hours screen on time, and almost all settings work as they should besides the built in cpu clock changer which works but doesn't stick after reboot. What more can you ask for?
Edit
Use kernel tuner for changing CPU clocks and governer as well as other great settings.
Edit again...
Forgot to mention I force 2G and disable data 75% of the time because most places I go have WiFi and the area I live in has "light green" coverage meaning there's ****ty 4G signal...Weak Signal=Bad Battery Life. Forcing 2G and disabling data improves battery life noticeably.

My issue was the app crashing when refreshing news feed. You can solve that problem by disabling something under developers settings.
