[Q] JTAG without box - Optimus One, P500, V Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bricked my LG optimus one the other day, and I got it into EM mode and tried to flash stock ROM onto it via KDZ and it dead booted it. So I've been looking into JTAG and am really excited to see how it'll work, but I don't have the money to get a RIFF box. Is there anyway to do it straight from the parallel cable on my PC's MOBO?
I saw something about it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075839 but they didn't get too far into it. Is it possible? Has anyone made a software for it?
Thanks in advance

Yes, in theory it will work but why do it for a device you can get on eBay for 50 bucks brand new....you'll spend more money trying to jtag than just buying a new phone

i totally agree with you

I really like this phone, and I really like hacking into stuff like that. It's a kinda hobby, and it gives me something to do I already made a JTAG cable that fits into my old-school MOBO so now I just need the software. Shouldn't be too hard? And didn't cost me a thing so far

I haven't seen the software flying around but if you have the knowledge to jtag, just create the software
. I've never done it

Did you completely brick your phone? Is it boot able into recovery? If so, have you tried an alternate mean such as LGDMP 1.5? the program is really meant for baseband switch but you might be able to recover your phone
Sent from my LG-P500 using Tapatalk 2

Yeah that's what dead booted it in the first place. I tried running that but it bricked my phone Now no signs of power. And I've never JTAGed either.... Love to try though Just don't know where to start to create software

I seem to be a jack of all trades but I'm guessing the only way you bricked was by pulling the battery during nv2 restoration. I did break 1 device with that program but still I'd rather use that program than kdz....lgdmp-40% of bricking, lgdmp-60% of bricking....

It actually completed the update then reboot itself and didn't turn back on

Has anyone created a software for JTAG to use without a jtag box? Straight from Parallel port?

Lolz.. what do you mean by jtag software??
Read more about jtags!!
What you can do is.. find service centres with jtag kit. Even some LG sc keep jtag!!

What I'm hoping for is, Whatever is inside of a JTAG box, you can also use your PC to do whatever a JTAG box can do. But it would require a software to tell your PC to do whatever it needs to do to JTAG the phone. Did I explain that right? It sounds like it should be possible to me.... I just don't know how to do it. And there are no JTAG services anywhere in the Treasure valley!

Any ideas?

You are not understanding.. WITHOUT jtag 'Hardware'.. you cant.
Eg: Can you have sound output in YOUR PC without Sound card 'Hardware' on motherboard.
In a proper old fashioned jtag box you need to measure voltage, resister values and many things.. programming and debugging using xilinx. People without core knowledge of xilinx, vlsi, µTC etc etc cant program over jtag and other similar devices. I cant explain what is inside jtag box but tell me how can you make
1 -Vddh (+3.3v)
2 - Vss (ground)
3 - nTRST
4 - Vss (ground)
5 - TDI
6 -Vss (ground)
7 - TMS
8 -Vss (ground)
9 - TCK
10-Vss (ground)
11- TDO
12-nRESET (optional)
13- Vddh (+3.3v)
14-Vss (ground
these 14 pin tap interface from pc.
Its not like using PC suite with data cable.
Nowadays there are many jtag boxes out in market specially for mobile pcbs.. to revive bricked phones. You just have to configure it.. rest it wil do everything itself.
This is a link.. where you can find people and shops with riff jtags.

So a JTAG (RIFF) box IS REQUIRED to fix a deadboot phone?

I have a hard bricked Skyrocket. I see that I can send it in for $50. But I'm all about solutions where I'm not paying someone else, and I actually fix it myself. I learn something, and if I ever make the mistake again, I can fix it again. Not just that, but it can help other people.
I did some Googling and searching with XDA forums, but I haven't seen anyone who has been able to fix their hard brick other than sending it in for repair.
I did manage to find this result in Google:
http://www.jtagbox.com/2012/03/page/2/
It seems to be for something called a RIFF Box. It appears to be some sort of USB based JTAG solution, and they also appear to have a working flash for the Skyrocket.
Here is some more info on the RIFF Box:
http://www.unlockforum.com/showthre...-How-to-set-up-RIFF-Box-!?p=145560#post145560
It *seems* legitimate, but I need to do some more digging. Has anyone tried it? Downside is that it's ~$150
This guy who is the only person that I can find in the US unbricking the Skyrocket is *clearly* using the Riff Box in his video, saying he is the "first" to do this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkJQAbwZjRk&t=1m50s
Here is the link to order a Riff Box, $150 + shipping, but I'm pretty sure it's international
I went through 4 skyrockets already. I'm on my 5th one. The first hard bricked was when I accidentally checked repartition in Odin. Second I accidently deleted the efs folder. Third I forgot the letter d in adb for cwr. Fourth it just stop working. ATT replaced all of them without any real hassles. I advise you to go to att and just blame on the OTAs. Tell them that you were trying to update it then it failed during the update. Consequently your phone stopped working.

It's not that at all. All the bricks were careless mistakes. The first brick was less than 12 hours into receiving the skyrocket. This was dated back into less than a week when the skyrocket was launched. I push my skyrocket to the limit. While on gingerbread I benchmarked on Antutu with 76xx score. Yeah I know benchmarks are just figures. Hell I'm just a guy who don't like limits. Lol

Have to return A2 for replacement, question about bootstrap

So, I bricked my last A2 and had it replaced and the one they gave me is horrific (bunch of issues...). Anyway, I know I have to unroot, they will most certainly detect that. However, What about bootstrap? Do you think they will notice that when they bring it to the back to do their "troubleshooting"? Because I was just planning on unrooting and then uninstalling bootstrap app (incase they know what that is, i know that that wont remove they bootstrap). So, what are your opinions on that?

Not sure if I'm completely off topic but don't want to start a new thread either: so does AT&T/Motorola salvage the bricked phones returned/exchanged under warranty? I understand if you microwave it, it's gone for good, but otherwise do they have a way to salvage a phone with hosed bootloader or hard bricking? Will it require special hardware setup to recover these phones? I am sure bricking would be a common phenomena in Moto's lab ...

Hey now lol. I try I try. I totally fixed my Captivate...after I bought this AWESOME phone. But I didn't brick this one, it was a bad replacement, and my last one, yeah FXZ confused me so my ignorance overtook my ability to fix it, because I couldnt find the files on the forums (links were down) and flashed wrong ones (live and learn?). But yes, being a sophmore in high school I probably shouldn't being doing this stuff as I don't have any money lol.

Yes, unless the EMMC is corrupted beyond redemption they have special flashing tools to restore phones to a usable condition. Just think about when the phone is made; it is a blank slate. They have to have a way to flash it initially. They can use a similar method to resurrect it if it is not damaged beyond repair.

Hmmm ... that's exactly is my point; if it is all software, why doesn't it leak like RSDlite? Then users could recover these bricked phones themselves and no need of these warranty calls. It must be some special hardware (to be connected to JTAG?) which even our service centers do not have available. Then we could take our out of warranty phones to them and get it restored for a small fee. Now if I take a bricked phone to them, they change the motherboard and charge ~30% of the phone value.

That is because there is an efuse that was blown as part of this process, and you can't unblow a fuse/efuse. That is why you are getting new boards. I was at one the AT&T service centers last week and we looked at one of the bricks, and it did throw 2 efuses that I could find. We could connect them to JTAG with the correct connetions, but we could NOT see the phone from the JTAG device/software.

Is it not an inefficient (or dangerous (or suicidal)) design that if you overwrite the bootloader (even by an older version) then a efuse blows somewhere and the motherboard becomes useless. You may refuse to boot if the bootloader isn't trusted but killing the phone in the process sounds too bad to me. Would this happen with phones with unlocked bootloader too?

No, this is a Motorola ONLY thing, as inefficient as it might be. There is no need for anything like is in a unlocked bootloader phone. This happens because these phones are just like iphones in that Motorola does NOT want us "playing" with them, or doing any kind of dev work on them, Moto phones have a HUGE history of being non developer friendly. That is also why certain devs like me find them a challenge and want to "breakthrough" all that.

Well, except their managers we all see how it backfired. It doesn't interfere with people who wants to stay stock, and if it gets bricked doing some dev, they get a warranty call (and maybe they have to swap in 90% cases). Doesn't help anyone.
However I had a Milestone before (why did I buy another Moto afterwards questions my sanity) but even if it had a locked bootloader (and after stock 2.1 no update was given), devs could port froyo and finally CM7 and CM9. I am hoping in spite of the lock, we'll be able to port CM9/10, keeping the kernel same. I am hopeful as LG Thrill 4G, Motorola Droid 3 has CM9 already.
Well I'm offtopic already so don't bother replying

[Q] About JTAG Repair

Hey guys...
I was unfortunate enough to come across some aroma/twrp bug while updating my kernel and now my phone is bricked. Oh well, life happens. I am going to have to send it in for JTAG repair. I found that mobiletechvideos.com does JTAG repair for $60 so that's not all terrible. Do any of you have experience with them? Is there service good? From what I can tell they look legit..
On their website they also also have numerous "addons" you can choose for your order such as "ROM/Root upgrade service" and "S-off". Now, does that mean that once I get the phone back it will be in a state where I cannot root the device? I have my old bootloader unlock code from before... would that work to root the phone after this procedure is performed? It is my understanding that they (mobile tech videos) modify whatever image they push to your phone to include your IMEI information. Would that give me troubles if I tried to unlock the phone using my old unlock code?
Perhaps I should email them directly.
Anyway, what are your thoughts?
I would ask them, but I believe they can set things up however you want. I recall seeing one person saying they got it back s-off, etc.

Scroll down and you'll see a huge list of devices supported by the one box. More devices added with firmware updates to the box. Ships from the uk as there is no distributor on this side of the oceans. afaik
But there are distributers on this side. Madusa riff boxes will do the same thing. The JTag site has a list of suppliers that sell riff boxes in the US. Since more devices are becoming usb supported, the need for soldering is limited to certain devices.

does JTAG'ing void the warranty as they have to open up the phone? I haven't looked in depth at videos of people opening up the phone but I can only imagine that they ahve some stickers inside...
If not, I'd definitely send my phone to them if it meant I could get S-OFF even though I'm on JB

I imagine it voids the warranty. But then again, unlocking the bootloader and rooting your phone could also void the warranty...
Thanks Venomtester, I guess I'll start packing up my phone then.

[Q] Where is the "storage" in skyrocket? (hardware)

my phone has been hard bricked. repair costs like $50, im not going to repair it.
im going to sell my skyrocket i727 to someone, but he only need the screen.
but i have some emails attached to google play in that phone, im worried he might get access to the applications and emails.
i have also pattern type lock screen.
im planning to destroy the "storage" hardware in it, hard disk?
so anyone give me hint where does all the data is saved? so i can destroy it.
There isn't a hard disk it's an emmc chip attached to the mobo.

oh, so all the data is saved on emmc chip, is there a guide on how to remove it ?
all i want is to destroy the data in my phone, so the new owner cannot access anything except the screen.

How about just taking the motherboard out before you sell it? Or...take the screen off and just sell it. Easy!

If you're not handy or not willing then don't ask. Otherwise you have the whole world wide web and libraries at your disposal.

If someone else responds before you then your posts make no sense and no one knows what you're responding to.
It's there for a reason, use it.

Where can I buy mainboard from?

After bricking my Xperia L and waiting for over a month for a reply from the service where i bought the phone from, they rejected my warranty because the phone has a little indent on the top... Now I am looking for a new mainboard. Can somebody tell me where can I buy it from? Also I am thinking of buying an XL with broken display for parts (found one very cheap) but can there be any consequences besides the screen?

I have everything except point 1. I don't think the phone is recoverable (hard bricked, pc detects it as qhsusb_dload). Stupid guy at service center told me that i dropped the phone and that's why it isn't turning on. What a looser!

Thanks for the advice, but I have exams coming and I don't have time to do this stuff. I purchased the XL with broken screen and in the coming days I will send it to service center to have the mainboard on my phone exchanged with the one from the phone with broken screen.
