anyone successfully hard unbricked *themselves* with JTAG, or this "Riff Box" ? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

anyone successfully hard unbricked *themselves* with JTAG, or this "Riff Box" ?
I have a hard bricked Skyrocket. I see that I can send it in for $50. But I'm all about solutions where I'm not paying someone else, and I actually fix it myself. I learn something, and if I ever make the mistake again, I can fix it again. Not just that, but it can help other people.
I did some Googling and searching with XDA forums, but I haven't seen anyone who has been able to fix their hard brick other than sending it in for repair.
I did manage to find this result in Google:
http://www.jtagbox.com/2012/03/page/2/
It seems to be for something called a RIFF Box. It appears to be some sort of USB based JTAG solution, and they also appear to have a working flash for the Skyrocket.
Here is some more info on the RIFF Box:
http://www.unlockforum.com/showthre...-How-to-set-up-RIFF-Box-!?p=145560#post145560
It *seems* legitimate, but I need to do some more digging. Has anyone tried it? Downside is that it's ~$150

This guy who is the only person that I can find in the US unbricking the Skyrocket is *clearly* using the Riff Box in his video, saying he is the "first" to do this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkJQAbwZjRk&t=1m50s
Here is the link to order a Riff Box, $150 + shipping, but I'm pretty sure it's international

I went through 4 skyrockets already. I'm on my 5th one. The first hard bricked was when I accidentally checked repartition in Odin. Second I accidently deleted the efs folder. Third I forgot the letter d in adb for cwr. Fourth it just stop working. ATT replaced all of them without any real hassles. I advise you to go to att and just blame on the OTAs. Tell them that you were trying to update it then it failed during the update. Consequently your phone stopped working.

It's not that at all. All the bricks were careless mistakes. The first brick was less than 12 hours into receiving the skyrocket. This was dated back into less than a week when the skyrocket was launched. I push my skyrocket to the limit. While on gingerbread I benchmarked on Antutu with 76xx score. Yeah I know benchmarks are just figures. Hell I'm just a guy who don't like limits. Lol

How XDA saved my ass!

Okay. It's about 5AM here, but I couldn't go to sleep without writing this.
Here is my hell.
Bought a Captivate about 6 months ago. Rooted it, networked unlocked it, even though I kept getting the random shutdowns. All the rooting and unlocking was done via the GREAT posts in XDA.
Last week, the speaker on my cappy decided to die! Called AT&T for a warranty replacement.
I received my replacement, and all was well. Cappy came with "stock" 2.2 Froyo. However, in a vain hope that AT&T MIGHT have released Gingerbread, I checked for an update via Kies Mini. Said phone was invalid! Now, I had already restored my emails, contacts, etc.
Anyhow, tried to flash to AT&T stock 2.1 via Odin. My stupid computer decided to terminate my usb connection during the flash! Anyhow, cappy bricked. Got the phone-pc icon of doom!
Poking around XDA, I found out what to do. Finally flashed my cappy back to 2.1 via Odin, and then Keis recognized it with no problem! Flashed to AT&T stock Froyo 2.2. Rooted, network unlocked, and now, after 5 hours, all is well.
I just want to say that this forum ****ing ROCKS! Excuse my language, but I'm tired and am FINALLY able to go to bed!
It's crazy how AT&T would send me a warranty replacement phone which seemed to have some mutant version of Froyo that Keis wouldn't recognize. If not for Odin, I'd be screwed! If not for these forums, I'd have a bricked phone that I'd have to fight with AT&T to replace again!
Thank you guys for your hard work, dedication, and technical knowledge! You saved my ass! I'm going to sleep now, with a phone that is working exactly the way I want it to.
Let me reinterate. You guys ****ing RULE! Thank you thank you thank you X 1000! I've been with this forum through a Blackberry, a Windows Mobile, and now, a Droid, and have never, EVER been disappointed! As a Windows computer tech, I tip my hat to you guys. AT&T sucks. XDA rules!
This made my morning, glad everything worked out bud!

Weird
And here's the kicker guys. My old cappy with the messed up speaker was running Baseband version I897UCKB1. The cappy the warranty guys sent me was running Baseband version I897UCKB2. That was the one that Kies firmly rejected. After flashing to 2.1 via Odin, and then upgrading via the official Kies, my new phone is now running I897UCKB1. Kies has no problems now. WTF? Was I sent a phone with hacked firmware? LOL! Just crazy. All is well now, I'm just curious.

I actually didn't purchase my Captivate until I was sure it was going to be supported over here at XDA.
Yea, we all deal with lots of spam, n00bs, stupid questions, etc... But at the end of the day, this is a strong community of creative and intelligent individuals trying to get the most out of every drop of silicon in our phones.
I've been around these parts substantially longer than even my account shows, and I've never once been disappointed with the rigor and creativity of the people here.
Long live XDA, and long live original thinking!
My captivate was boring before xda, then xda saved my ass

If it wasn't for XDA - I would have an average so-so Android phone that is stuck with TouchWhiz, horrid GPS, and still on Froyo.
But.. with XDA - I get my choice of custom ROMs (thanks to the Chefs/Devs!) and get to rock Gingerbread and have a somewhat working GPS
Saviours indeed!
I cannot count how many amazing posts have saved my previous investment!
Hats off to all the uber intelligent and patient folks!
The best thing I like is that not only steps are given but also an explanation why to do them (although not always at the same place but nonetheless thats what search functionality is for )

My condolences
It is amazing how great this phone is.. still kickin..
Any idea where you may go from here? if you have an upgrade you have quite a few nice options at least.
same thing happened to me...but then I just bought another cappy
My suggestion is - backup and keep simple 9-dot lock.
Also I don't keep any financial info on the phone. NFC will fail.
I can't bring myself to ditch the Captivate just yet, though the new HTC One X looks pretty awesome. The windshield mount and desktop stand are one of the best I have ever used thats why I can't tear myself away just yet.
After rooting my Captivate and installing a new ROM (Slim ICS), it's like a new phone.
The One X does look cool, but I'm surprised there's no SD slot. Still, probably no issue for most people.
We'll see how soon the shiny wears off, but ICS on my Captivate is fast, functional and just really nice. So I can wait for a more optimal-for-me phone.
dropped my captivate a couple weeks ago... cracked the screeen...kinda want the nexus =p
Too bad
I don't dare to image it will happen to my cappy
That's terrible man :/....I've had my cappy for a while now and I have fallen back in love with it...first had it and I didn't like it then I got into rooting and stuff and then found how to flash roms and stuff and now I don't need an upgrade I love ittttt

Craigslist usually has them for about $100-150. Sometimes you can find one that's boot looped someone wants to sell, thinking its permanently borked.
Make sure you report it stolen with the phone company. They will mark the imei number as stolen.

What error is it giving you in CWM? What version of CWM? In reference to Odin - do you have the drivers installed, usb debugging checked, etc.? Have you tried different usb cords/ports/computers?
I'm not at my phone right now but the cwm error was somethin bout a file missing from /data... I literally just rooted and flashed tweaked to the refurbed one they sent me and all is well, the old one won't be detected in any way by my computer tho n it's been doing funny **** every since I left eclipse.. I know it's not the computer or hardware, but any attempt to flash on cwm OR Odin results in failure.. should I even worry since it looks like stock anyway? Lol idk if they really check at Verizon..

Uh yes they check. Dont you think that if you know how to do this then their techs would too. I can tell you that is the first thing they look for. If they determine your phone is rooted you WILL receive a bill for full retail price.
While I would agree is there proof of it happening irl? I personally would raise hell if they did to me. I bought the charge at full price because of the possibility of loosing unlimited. It went from flagship phone to abandoned before my contract was done. Luckily I had an upgrade to burn and got a S3 but even then they pulled the locked bootloader ****. I know why, to keep people buying devices but they really like to treat their customers like ****

[Q] Well... I've done it... Hard Bricked my phone...

Yea I know, make fun of me. Tonight I was trying to install CM 9.0 for my i727.
I already had Clockwork and Odin installed, everything was working 100%
I decided to follow TeamChopsticks guide to get there.
Unfortunately CM was not installing after I did the "Format /system (mounts and storage->format /system)" step and I decided to take matters into my own hands.
I went into Odin hoping to just flash CM. I then saw that the only option was "PIT" and naive, stupid, tired me decided to do it.
I mean what could go wrong. I had titanium backup and everything.
Turns out I probably reformatted my internal mem to something my i727 can not use. Yay...
Now my phone won't go into download mode, it wont boot, actually it wont do anything.
I've spent the last 3 hours reading online on what to do. To my avail I found nothing. (I found QPST but it won't let me add "COM4" which my phone is on, so it's useless)
My phone is recognized by the computer as "QHSUSB_DLOAD" and Odin used to have it in COM4.
I really don't want to send my phone anywhere, I've had it since Christmas so it's not the newest, and upgrading to a SGSIII would be an option.
What should I do? What CAN I do?
Hopeless college guy here. =/

Ouch, that's hard luck man. Not gonna rub it in man. You know exactly what you did and why it happened, and I genuinely feel for you there.
Like vincom said, take it to AT&T and tell them you don't know why it won't boot. They'll probably refer you to Sammy if you're outside of a month with no insurance. Best chance you've got short of JTAG.

The guys are right, im afraid. Back in my newish days (heck i still am new) something similiar happened to me. Im on Rogers in Canada, and I told them it happened while upgrading through kies. They shipped me a refurbished model for 35 bucks, so hopefully ATT is as benevolent.
FYI this one had a faulty usb port and they were out of refurbs, so they just sent me a brand new one (second replacement). So follow your dreams, I guess. : D

If the device is still under warranty, no problem. Otherwise no matter what you say the retail AT&T reps are sort of clueless around Android and won't offer any steps to try. I just picked up my Skyrocket on Friday and want to go slowly haha I soft bricked my Captivate way back in 2010 so I understand how it feels.

If you are bricking "so many phones" you are clearly doing something wrong.
Dude good luck! Let us know how it goes...

Why would this happen all at once?

So outta nowhere my headset speakers fail to work. I can't hear anything in a call unless I'm on speaker phone. The keys on my keyboard won't light. And the notification led doesn't light up for text or when charging anymore. I was running newsense and switched to a different rom to see if that was the problem but it wasn't.

Do an RUU back to stock (don't do the OTA), if that doesn't work it is a hardware issue. All those problems at once? Sounds like it got wet, not saying it did, but you don't usually see that many problems pop at once without something major happening. Good luck.

I had 3 shifts ear pieces all go out the same day. All had different owners across 2 accounts. So yeah that was the end of dealing with sprint lol

My speedy has taken serious beatings throughout this year I've had it lol The only thing wrong with it was a wonky flex cable like 2 weeks ago, but other than that everything works like brand new.

I'm not as fortunate, I also have a dead spot on the top quarter of my screen and it is getting annoying rotating my screen all the time to use the basic functions of my phone, nothing against the Shift at all but I can't wait to upgrade.

So are you saying try unrooting an re rooting again? Just wanted to make sure that's what you're saying first. And no, its hasn't been near water and I have the ottetbox case on it. This is my original shift btw, bought brand new with contract 14 months ago. Also just wanted to add, that even though the keyboard keys don't light, my shift and fn lights still work.
edit
Anyone have a different link to the ruu file? I keep getting redirected to this "Internet vs. Hollywood" crap site.. >.<

Sounds like you'll have to take it back, It's not a software issue if the RUU didn't fix it.

I have had the same issue happen to me, for some reason the Shift is a great water magnate they apparently found some " Moisture" Build up in mine, when they came to open it up during a repair, I would keep $100.00 USD On the side just in-case you have to file an insurance claim with asurion.
Ive tried to, Unroot and back to stock, ive tried rerooting .Re-Romming and Flashing the device,
a Majority of the time issues like that are caused by the wiring in the device "Moisture" Build up and or just cause the shift wants to be a little bonkers .
But then again if your not around it, you may just luck out and get a hardware defect claim and keep 100 bucks in your pocket and two days later you get a Refurbished device ^____^ yay for you.
I said it sounded like moisture lol:sly: Anyways, good luck... Shifts are dropping like flies round here.
Don't want to start new thread so. Will try posting this here. My shift's screen started going black whenever I open or close the keyboard. It happens whether I am in the OS, bootlader, or recovery, so idk if it is the ROM. Any ideas?

I've seen prboy post about this a ton of times but what he always suggests is to see if you hear sort of a crunching sound when you close/open the keyboard. If you do, its probably the flex cable and you can buy one and replace it yourself (if you want)
I believe you can also take it in to Sprint if its in fairly good condition and they will give you a new one no questions asked
You might wanna also take a look at the questions/posts HERE or HERE
EDIT: Just FYI, but the flex cable is what connects the keyboard to the touch screen

Yeah I have seen those posts too. Wasn't sure cause it isn't making any noise. Got this refurb after the last ota killed my phone. So its in great condition. Guess I'm unrooting and heading to sprint

There is a very good possibility that it could be the Flex Cable. But if you plan on taking it back to Sprint, RUU first. That way you kill two birds with one stone. You confirm the issue, and you prep it for going back to Sprint.
