Description: Since the previous root method that worked in ICS has been blocked in Jelly Bean. I've decided to create this simple guide (loosely based on this thread) that will allow you to root, flash a custom recovery of your choosing, and unlock the bootloader on your Verizon Galaxy S III device if you just received the official Jelly Bean OTA (without having to flash a factory image).

Can't you just root and use the market apps ez recovery and ez unlock to do all that from the phone?

Unfortunately not. In order to just root Jelly Bean, a custom recovery is required first. And you can't use EZ recovery or EZ unlock without being rooted in the first place. Hence, this is the reason I have created this guide for people who are coming from stock Jelly Bean.

Any idea if ota rootkeeper will work?

It worked for people throughout all ICS OTA's. With Jelly Bean it's hard to say, we will just have to wait and see. Worst case? That's what this guide is for to get it all back for you. :good:

I am still on the K3 Wipe leak from your other thread. So now I should just follow the directions in this thread instead?

If you used the Wipe image instead of No-wipe then you are 100% stock so you will have to use this method instead.

Thought I was going crazy because I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong when trying to flash recovery. Kept getting a fail message in Odin. Then I found this thread and once again you have saved the day. Thank you, sir.

Dumb question . . . what is advantage/disadvantage of returning to a stock bootchain?

Mostly performance and bugs fixes on the preboot process of the device. But also take note that bootchains contain the RPM partition and VRALEC was built on a very early prerelease ICS. Most likely you wouldn't see anything noticeable but I like to return it to the original intended partitions since that is what it was built-on.

. . . I now have your NO WIPE K3 on my phone . . . safe to assume that it has the VRALEC bootchain to allow for adding a custom recovery, correct? Then if I elect to add CWM, root/unlock, the final step would be to return to the stock bootchain . . . even deciding not to root, one should return to stock bootchain, correct?

That's correct. If you continue to follow my guide in the original thread you will see that Step 2 (when flashing the custom recovery) actually includes the stock bootchain packaged with it as well, so you are flashing custom recovery and bootchain all at the same time. Or, you can just follow from step 2 of this thread and will achieve the same thing. However you prefer.

[Guide / Tool][10/15/12] - Update to Official Jellybean Then Root or Custom ROM!

I wrote this guide do to the general lack of information for users about the Jellybean update. This guide is basic in nature and will provide you with all the tools and links you need to update from an ICS based ROM to the official JB ROM then re-root or prepare for custom ROM.
If you already have the Official JB Update simply unlock it and proceed to Section #2. This guide was intially intended for those who cannot update because of Asus stupid lock out program once you unlock.
Warning
I have tested this guide on my device multiple times and never have one single issue. I cannot say it will work perfect for you! I am not responsible for anything that goes wrong including but not limited to; A $500 brick! The economy imploding worse, Nuclear war, End of the world on 12/12/12!
Pre-requisites
Unlocked bootloader
Custom Recovery
Any version of TF700T
Windows 7 or Windows 8 PC
General Overview
Flash Asus JB update
Flash TWRP 2.2.3
Flash SuperSU or Custom ROM

Section 1 - Flash Asus JB update
Obtain the appropriate Jellybean update from the Asus Support Site HERE
Go to Downloads and pick the local / region specific update file for your device. For the intent of this guide I will focus on the US Based variant but all other devices will follow the exact same steps.
{

}
After you download the Jellybean update you must extract the zip file in the zip (I dont know why they did this!). The name of the first zip file will be "US_epad_user_10_4_4_16_UpdateLauncher.zip"
The zip file inside of that will be "US_epad-user-10.4.4.16.zip" This is the file we will flash to update to JB!
To do this open the first zip file with your zip [rogram of choice, (as you can see I use 7zip) and pull out the only other zip file in there (US_epad-user-10.4.4.16.zip).
Once you have that file copy it to you internal SD card. Although, untested, external SD should work too.
Now.... Reboot to recovery. To do this power down the device, and then Hold Volume Down and then press power untill you get a menu that says press XX key to boot to recvoery.
Once in recovery you MUST wipe data before you continue!
Now flash the ROM file you just copied like it was a plain old fashioned custom ROM or Root.zip. Just select it and flash!
Once the flash is done reboot. Dont be scared... This will take a LONG time... Maybe in upwards of 3 to 5 minutes. This is normal. Its completely rebuilding the device!
Once the device is all booted up and you are at your desktop we can proceed to Section 2.
Section 2 - Flash TWRP 2.2.2.3
First we need to obtain TWRPREcovery. You are free to use any version you want, including ClockworkMod (although I highly discourage CWM and recomend TWRP).
You can find TWRP HERE. Remember I recommend the 2.2.2.3 version. 2.3.0.0 gave me some issues.
Now that you have the file download you need to rename it to "recovery.blob" for use with my tool!
Now download the attached tool and unzip it. It contains the fastboot and ADB files you will need to flash the recovery.
Next place the recovery.blob in the folder
Turn on USB Degging in the developer menu of the device. This is very important otherwise you will be just sitting there forever, lol
Now initiate the "Recovery Install Tool.bat" file. This will reboot you to bootloader and flash the recovery for you ;c)
Done!
Section 3 - Flash SuperSU or Custom ROM
Needless to say I am partial to custom ROMS ;c) But I know some may be content with just flashing root so I will show you how to obtain the correct root file and or ROM and give a brief over view on how to flash them. This section will be pretty routine and will not contain a lot of new info for most of you!
Obtain my favorite root app, SuperSU, from HERE
Copy to storage
Reboot to recovery
Flash and Be rooted!
Same steps for a custom ROM. The best Custom ROM can be found HERE! ;c)
Section 4 - Thanks!
Thanks to Dess_troy for making TWRP for our devices!
Thanks to Chainfire for the root app!
Thanks to all the Developers on XDA that have taught me (in one way or another) everything I know!
Special Thanks to all the CleanROM users who have inspired me to push CleanROM to be the premier custom ROM for your Android Device!
Please feel free to rebuild this for the Linux or Mac platform and re-distrubute!
So, the very first step is unlocking the bootloader, correct?

A number of people have asked and I have usually replied that it is possible to use the Asus provided UnLock tool - the one on the website that says is only compatible with ICS - with a tablet that has been updated to JB.
In short the Unlock tool works in Jellybean!
You might want to add this as an addendum to your original post.
Cheers,
Eric
i apologize for my beligerant question but if i want to try the new cwm touch recovery, do i just rename it to recovery.blob? when i downloaded it it was the usual iso. when renamed it didnt change anything so i dont wanna brick my tab. figured id ask first. thanks for the awesome walk through tho man. i really apreciate it. loving your roms. have 2.0 downloaded already. also can you pm the link to your tf300 kernel you used? i need to show off some high quadrant numbers lol
Confused...
How do I get a custom recovery on my tablet before this whole process? I've read thru some threads, do I need to be rooted first on ICS before starting this process of updating to JB? I'm not getting the official ASUS JB OTA...I've checked for the update about 500 times, I'm just not getting it.
At this point, I have an unlocked but unrooted, and wiped stock TF700T on ICS. Whats my next step?

This guide is for people who have already unlocked there device any may have had a custom ROM installed pre-JB.
You fall into a unique and rather off situation. I have never heard of some one not getting the OTA.
You could follow these steps but as a pre-step...
Download and unlock with the Asus unlock tool. Its on the same download page.
Download an ICS based recovery and use that in in place of the one noted for now. And then just start at Section 2. Then start back over at Section 1.
Basically we will put a recovery on your device in Section 2. Then start over at step 1 by applying the JB build then put a recovery back on, as it gets wiped off by Asus builds and your all set.
So I got the OTA JB update from Asus. I unlocked the boot loader using the Asus app. I downloaded and extracted US_epad-user-10.4.4.16.zip then threw it on the insternal SD card ( /storage/sdcard0 ). I rebooted with the volume key press and selected recovery. It gave me a message saying "booting recovery kernel". The next thing I see is an android on his back with a red exclamation sign.
What am I doing wrong?

The stock recovery will only flash firmware zips with a certain name. Rename the zip to EP201_768_SDUPDATE.ZIP and try again.
I upgraded to jb firmware and lost root. My 700T is unlocked. I thought I followed the procedure correctly but I did not get the message correct message when I ran the program. My device is not rooted. Can you tell me what I might be doing wrong.
yes you lose root. this will make your tf700 like the factory jellybean firmware which is not rooted. go back to op and keep reading. each section builds on the previous. first get the jellybean firmware. im still playing with mine stock its so damn smooth. then you flash a custom recovery using his tool. then you flash the zip which gives you root. then i would make a back up so you can always get back to that point. then you can look into custom roms like scotts sweet clean rom for tf700 series

I actually tried this last night with no luck. I guess it was something funny with my desktop in that it couldn't connect using fast boot. Anyway I brought it in to work and ran it here and everything is fine. I am going to throw your stock/root rom on it now. Thanks for your help!
CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip
Hello,
thanks a lot for the guide, it is really clear and detailed.
My question is something I did not find on the previous question and it is more a double check to be sure I am not doing something I should not.
You say to install SU with the package copied on the internal SD, and you added a link to the SU thread. in this thread, the only SU as a package you can find is CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip, as it is CWM, will it work if I install it with TWRP? or there is special settings in this package that will not be recognised by TWRP?
Thanks in advance for your help

You need to be on Clean Stock Jelly Bean if you want to install this update (same goes for the official update),but you are not, that's why you got that error.
Guys, I'm quite new to all the flashing techniques.
Could anyone explain how to install this update over CleanROM 2.0 ?
Do I need to flash 10.4.4.16 first ? If I do, do I need to do factory reset to reset CleanROM 2.0 settings ?

The full stock .18 ROM has been posted on the ASUS support site, so no point in downgrading to stock .16 and then flashing the OTA.
You could also try this rooted flashable zip version made by Scott "CleanROM" scrosler if you are not 100% stock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943227
Hmmmmm. I was able to install the factory 18 file over clean Rom 2 with no issues using twrp. I just cleared caches and installed it like any other Rom.

Yes,you can do that with the official 10.4.4.18 rom because that it's the full rom,and you can install it with CWM or TWRP over any ROM you want but you will loose the custom recovery too, basically you will get full stock 10.4.4.18 Jelly Bean rom.

[HOWTO] [ROOT] [ODIN] No Tripping Flash Counter - Root + [TWRP] - Updated 05.25.2013

This is a root injected Stock I535 (leaked) Odin Flashable Image. You flash this in Odin just as you would the completely stock ROM from samsung. I've simply injected the su binary and SuperSu app so you now have rooted stock image.
So if you want to keep your device stock yet have the functionality of root without tripping the counter or just flashing back to stock yet retaining root for a good baseline to move forward from, then this is a good option.
You can get ODIN here
and the drivers for the SCH-I535 so ODIN can detect your phone can be found at Samsung's site. Click on the Manuals & Downloads tab at the bottom and then on Software for the latest driver.
Instructions:
First, Download Image:
JB Image (4.1.2) Provided by open1your1eyes0 leak
Main Download: No Wipe, latest 4.1.2 Image: root66_VZW_I535VRBMB1.7z
Prior Version:
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBMA2.7z - This will wipe everything! Complete factory wipe. Caution, Includes /sdcard.
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBMA2_nowipe.7z - This will NOT wipe data or sdcard.
JB Image (4.1.1)
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK3.7z - This will wipe everything! Complete factory wipe. Caution, Includes /sdcard.
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK3_nowipe.7z - This will NOT wipe data or sdcard.
Older Leaked JB Image
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1.7z - This will wipe everything! Complete factory wipe. Caution, Includes /sdcard.
Mirror 2: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1.7z - This will wipe everything! Complete factory wipe. Caution, Includes /sdcard.
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1_nowipe.7z - This will NOT wipe data or sdcard.
Mirror 2: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1_nowipe.7z - This will NOT wipe data or sdcard.
Archived Images
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLJ1.7z - This will wipe everything! Complete factory wipe. Caution, Includes /sdcard.
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLJ1_nowipe.7z - This will NOT wipe data or sdcard.
Second, Extract and Flash:
Extract the root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1.tar.md5 from the .7z file you downloaded.
Use Odin, put phone into download mode [with phone off, hold vol. down + home + power ], connect to computer and open Odin.
once in odin click the PDA field and select the root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1.tar.md5 you downloaded.
Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.
click start and
when done let phone reboot.
If you have issues flashing with Odin please ensure you are using the microusb cable that came with the phone, users have had issues using other cables.
If you just want a stock, rooted phone with no custom recovery, no plans to flash custom roms, etc. then you can stop HERE.
Optional, Recovery (may now trip counter):
Loading any custom recovery or custom kernel may now trip the download mode flash counter. Loading a non stock recovery will also prevent you from successfully applying any OTA updates however here is a procedure for any who want a non-stock recovery:
The instructions here are for TWRP but you can follow same procedure for CWM as well.
Option 1: Download GooManager from the Play store. Once installed click the menu and select "Install OpenRecovery Script".
Option 2: Download the TWRP recovery image here. Copy it to the /sdcard of your phone.
Connect your phone to your computer and use adb
type adb shell
once in the shell run su
then
dd if=/sdcard/openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-d2vzw.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
Alternate if unfamiliar with adb commands
Grab android terminal emulator from the play store and run the same commands starting with su and then the dd command.
Bonus Files
CWM Flashable OTA Upgrade (preserves root and non-stock recovery):
---------------:: root66_OTA_I535_VRBLK3_VRBMB1.zip
CWM Flashable Modems: modem_CWM_I535VRBLK3.zip || modem_CWM_I535VRBMA2.zip
ODIN Flashable Stock Recovery: VZW_recovery_I535VRBLK3.tar.md5 || VZW_recovery_I535VRBMA2.tar.md5
History:
I've injected root into other stock images and those threads have a lot of valuable information which could answer some questions that may arise here. If you have time to do some reading here are a few of the informative ones:
Samsung Galaxy S3 [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers / Sasktel ]
Samsung Galaxy S3 [TMO / Wind / Mobilicity]
Also did sprint but there isn't much there that won't be covered above.
FAQ
Does this remove the VZW bloatware?
A: No. It is same as stock, nothing is removed.
Does this use an unlocked boot.img
A: No. This flashes the stock boot.img in the VRBLJ1 image.
Can I still get OTA updates?
A: Yes if you do not load a custom recovery or remove any system apps OTA updates will still come and be able to be successfully applied. If you want to retain root through the OTA process I'd recommend using OTA Rootkeeper.
Awsome! Thanks for this!!
I'd like to add I don't have a VZW S3 so I didn't test those images above. The first person to try please post to confirm they work. Thanks.
EDIT: Anyone reading this, it's been confirmed they work now.

Yes. In the faq question 2.
This appears to be exactly what I'm looking for (stock/rooted).
Still no power due to Sandy, but has anytime tried this and confirmed it works? I'm on the current official ota with root and no custom recovery now.

No one tried this yet? Not many people looking only for stock/rooted lb
I installed open1your1eyes0 prior to seeing this or I would have tried it. I can confirm your flash counter will be tripped using that method. Had I seen this first I certainly would have used it as all I want is stock rooted.
Thanks for thinking of us conservative types that only want stock rooted.

I hope at this point most people have their phone how they want it. To me, this is good for 2 things. 1, first get your phone and want completely stock but root. 2, you've played around with other roms, kernels, etc and want to get back to a good baseline ensuring all stock but of course retaining root.

Well there have been 30 downloads. maybe someone has tried it at this point. (some people never post) but I'm sure we'll know soon enough.
I rooted my phone via one of the original methods (Odin file) when it first came out. When I put, the first screen says "custom". I don't think that original method tripped the flash counter.
After installing this via Odin, will I still get the "custom" message on boot?
Foxfi no longer works on jb, right?
Worked like a charm!! unlocked with ez unlock and flashed cwm 6.0.1 with ez recovery...no tripped flash counter

I misread. Thought he said flash with cwm.
Anyhow, I'm not doing custom roms, so I'm stopping after Odin. Still interested to the questions I had a couple posts up.

the custom screen means your bootloader is locked. No the original method does not trip the flash counter. You basically use this file just like you did way back with VRALF2 root66 that mr. robinson was so kind to provide us with.

Does this wipes data ?
Or can I do an "upgrade" from stock rooted (4.1, flashed via Odin) to this version ?
No It doesn't wipe data, if you got rooted stock It should be fine. Never the less a backup and a wipe is recommended.

1- Yes
2- you can flash any recovery you wish, but of course it will trigger the binary count if you wish to remove the binary count you must flash this package from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588557 and then run triangle away.

I'm trying to update my girlfriend's note2 to 4.3
Here is her phone's info :

Version number : JZ054.N7100XXDME6
CSC : N7100XADME2
No recovery installed, and counter still at 0
Can I flash your version safely from her version ?

Worked perfectly, plus root via kingoapp
I noticed it is odexed, do you plan on a deodexed one ?
Sent from my Nexus 5
I will give a try, but my priority is to make it prerooted like a did before but on 4.3 the root gets disabled at first boot, so far.
Now that you are on 4.3 you can install a 4.3 deodexed rom via custom recovery or mobile odin, there is 2 such rooms in the development treads.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk
Everything went ok with the upgrading, except that Triangle Away not seem to work anymore?
I have run version 3.10 + unfreezed the sysscope file in Titanium B, but I'm still "custom".
Maybe it doesn't work when I have used the Kingo root? Do you have any advice..?
Regards
Unfreeze sysscope, unistall triangle away, reboot, clear cache and wipe data of sysscope and Interprise sysscope, now reinstall triangle away an run it.

I heard many comments about Mobile Odin not working with 4.3
Has anyone successfuly flashed this?
I have Mobile Odin Pro and 4.1.2
My phone is rooted but with a stock Samsung ROM.
Wondering if 4.1.2>4.3 will go smoothly with Mobile Odin and this ROM, keeping root. Anyone?
If you follow my instructions for mobile odin it should work. ?

[How-To] Root I337UCUFNI1 4.4.2 (9/18/2014)

1. Take the NI1 OTA update. (Should the update fail see troubleshooting section below).
2. Place your phone into "Download Mode" (press and hold the "Home", "Volume Down", and "Power" keys until the phone powers on and displays warning screen, then press "Volume Up" key).
3. Flash the I337_NC1_Stock_Kernel using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
4. Root using Towelroot-v3.apk(internet access not required).
5. Power off then boot into "Download Mode" again.
6. Flash the I337_NI1_Stock_Kernel also in Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
7. Install SuperSU to manage root access. Done!
Important!: Do not skip any of the above steps or you may experience issues with your device.
Notes:
1. After flashing the NC1 kernel your phone may run a little wonky, e.g. extreme lag, no wifi, etc., and towelroot may not root on the first try. If that happens reboot and try towelroot once again. Once rooted and after flashing the NI1 kernel your phone will again run like a champ!
2. Neither User Data nor knox warranty flag will be affected by following the above process.
3. The most common cause of a failed Odin flash is a bad usb port or cable. Please check before reporting a failure.
Troubleshooting:
Should the NI1 ota update fail consider flashing back to stock NB1 using either file in this thread: I337UCUFNB1 4.4 Stock Odin Tars & System Dump. Then take the NI1 ota update. (or place the I337_NB1toNI1_OTA_Update.zip onto your ext-sdcard and sideload from stock recovery). Once updated to NI1 continue from Step 2 above.
Alternative Method for Safestrap Users:
1. Use Safestrap's Backup Function to back-up User Data.
2. Place the I337UCUFNI1_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.zip onto your ext-sdcard.
3. Reboot into Safestrap recovery then perform an "Advanced Wipe" and wipe everything but your ext-sdcard.
4. Flash the I337UCUFNI1_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.zip using "Stock Slot."
5. Once complete press "Home" then reboot into "Download Mode."
6. Flash the I337_NI1_Stock_Kernel in Odin's PDA slot (AP in Odin v3.09+).
7. Reboot into Safestrap recovery and use the Restore Function to restore User Data. Done!
Notes:
1. The I337UCUFNI1_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.zip process will update your Modem, Non-hlos, System, Kernel, and Stock Recovery to NI1 but does not include the NI1 Bootloader.
2. Follow all of the above steps in the order provided and do not skip any steps or you may experience issues with your device!
I337_NI1 Stock Modem, Recovery, and System Dump
I337_NI1_Stock_Modem.tar.md5
I337_NI1_Stock_Recovery.tar.md5
