[Q] Question about updating roms. - General Questions and Answers

This a general question about apdating custom roms...
In cwm there is an option 'Update from sd' or something like that... What does it do?
Plus, If i have a rom installed into my phone, like for example a Version 1 of the rom. Do I have to wipe everything before installing version 1.1 or can I just flash it unto the other rom without wiping everything?Do I have to wipe only when a version 2 of the rom comes out? Ask the developer? EX. Real ics 5 to 5.1, to 5.2....
I have the same question for FXP cyanogen mod. If I have FXP149, Do I have to wipe everything before installing FXP150?
THANK YOU!

follow the instruction that are given with the ROM. its best to do a data and dalvik cache wipe
sometimes you can get away with just doing the dalvik cache.
make sure you do a backup of your current ROM.
boot into recovery
install zip from sd card
enjoy

Yes everything he said, and if I may recommend one for you to try, the new Doctorz v8 ROM ported by dman is awesome. And simple. I went from Infused 2.3.3 you go into red, wipe data, then wipe dalvik cache, flash the ROM then flash the su binary fix (download both 1st) also you'll have to uninstall Swype and reinstall from their website. That should be all the info you need. Good luck and enjoy.

yes, this is universal CF-ROOT, which can flash on all version of GB FW.
the addon is for the EXT4 conversion, which convert partition format.
this is to boost up you phone perfomance.
which you have to learn that, after you have know more on flashing
btw, after flash cm9, you already on ext4
What is the point of making wipe?? I didn't do it when I installed it. Shall I reflash the CM9 ROM or keep it like this???
Also another thing. Why I cannot overclock my phone?? When I had the stock rom I could overclock to 1.2Ghz with SetCPU, but now I can't.
Please help me.
Thank you.

Are you using the CM or All Other kernel? There is 2 and if you flash the wrong one you will get stuck at the logo. Strawberry is not a CM rom so download the all other. Reboot to recovery, wipe cache, dalvik, and flash. Pretty sure that will solve your problem. If not post back and we take it from there.

Then the kernel flashed fine so that is not the problem. You may have to wipe and start over. Wipe system, cache, dalvik, then the ROM, Gapps if needed, then the kernel.
What model NS are you running? Is it Sprint or the other carriers? Maybe you are flashing the wrong type ROM.
Report back and let me know.
I have I9023. I am from slovenia so i don't have Sprint. So i have to wipe data and everything. How do i wipe ROM, Gapps and kernel? And is enough if i do backup in ROMmanager?

When you do a format system it wipes the whole phone. Just flash the Strawberry ROM the same way you flashed the kernel.
When i do factory reset will i lose things saved on sd (strawberry rom, kernel and CWR)?

No it just wipes the system not the SD card. It clears the rom and kernel. As long as you got the ROM and kernel zip on your phone you can flash right from it. Flashing the rom is just like you did the kernel. SD card will be fine as long as you don't format it which is a separate function.
I wiped data (factory reset) -> wipe cache -> wipe dalvik -> instal ROM -> instal Kernel
But still doesn't work :crying:

Did the ROM successfully install? Are you positive the ROM and Kernel you are flashing is the correct Nexus S version? I'm running out of options here.
Yes i believe that is installed corectly because it says under the about phone rasbeanjelly build date and kernel is dirty lucifer or something. ROM is Strawberry which is for NS. Thanks for your help you made a big effort here :good:

(Q) jellybam 1.3 won't flash

Hi guys. Al thou this is my first post I've been flashing my i9003 for a year or so and i've never had any problems until now.
I have an stock gingerbread installed (XXKPQ) that I flashed using odin, kernel version (2.6.35.7-CL709629 [email protected] #1)
Just so you know, I'm from Argentina, and in order to be able to use 3g, had to keep the modem in I9003LUBKB1 version.
I also flashed cf root (by Skin1980) and I'm using CWM v1.80
I get the latest jellybam (1.3) from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1972087
And followed the instructions in the official website : http://www.igio90.net/how-to-install/
Just in case you're too lazy to follow the link here are the instructions:
What to do if you are coming from a Stock, CyanogenMod, MIUI, AOKP and any other custom ROM different from JellyBam
-Download the latest revision of JellyBam ROM for your device
-Place the zip into your internal SDCard
-Boot into CWM recovery (Home+Power+Volume up until samsung logo appear)
-Wipe data/factory reset
-Wipe dalvik cache (Inside advanced tab)
-Install zip from internal SDCard
-Welcome to JellyBam!
(I had to wipe the data first and then put the zip in the sd card because wiping the data was erasing the jellybam zip)
The first time I run the installer it got stuck at 50% while installing sony's media player. So i just started the process again and uncheked sony walkman player, it installed "successfully".
When the phone restarted, it was just the old gingerbread, in the about phone panel, it was all the same that before installing jellybam.
So it obviously didn't installed. I can make calls, send and receive messages, wifi is working fine.
So can anyone tell me what am I doing wrong? Do i have to flash a jellybean kernel?, I dont really know hoe to do that but I'm sure there's more than one post around here that explains that process.
If this question has already been posted I'm really sorry, I did search for any post that could help me with this problem but I didn't find any real answer.
I really hope somebody can help me, and sorry for the bad english, I did study the language but it was a long time ago.
Thanks everybody, specially to developers, you're awesome.:good:
I think you should fist flash theJellyBam v1.1.0 alpha4 in order to repartition before flash the v1.3. hope it can help u.

First of all thank you for your helpful answer (I clicked the thank you button).
I have cwm version 5 and I have been having the same problem than the OP. I'd like to flash a CM rom before going on to JB 1.3 so my question is, knowing that I currently have an I9003XXKPR 2.3.6 rom, can I flash CM 10 or should I start by a previous version? And, if so, which one?
Thank you for your help.

i think you should start from zero. take a backup of your files, flash a stock rom and then use universal cf root to root your phone. then flash cm 10 alpha 4 and then the jellybam 1.3. that's the way i have flashed mine. i hope it helps.

Good luck! i hope you flash it correctly! just read and follow the instructions in the cm10 thread thoroughly so you can avoid any problems.
All custom rom unofficial, not compile, but directly modify our base cyanogen
It is recommended to start on a CM10 origin
Example A3 to A4
KPE> LF2> CF-LF2
Wipe Data / Factory Reset. (MUST DO THIS STEP)
Select the CM10 A4.zip from your SD Card and flash.
Auto rebooted into recovery (if it show error mounting / cache, and cant mount in manually mount and storage, do wipe / cache)
Go to Advanced -> Reboot Recovery
Select the CM10 A4.zip from your SD Card and flash again
Go to Advanced -> Reboot Recovery.
Mounts and Storage -> Format dbdata (you would not find this in CWM so just ignor 6)
8. reboot
You can then flash all based on Unofficial Alpha 4
Just do the basic procedure wipe

[Q] Updating ROM via GooManager

Hi All,
I have posted this on the GooManager thread but there hasn't been much activity there recently so asking here as well. Noob question on GooManager...I have the AOKP rom installed on my Sensation and GooManager notifies me of updates to my ROM every now and then. I just want to know if updating my ROM build with GooManager will reset all my custom ROM settings and preferences or will they all be preserved? I'd like to keep my ROM up to date but if it means spending all the time again to setup my preferences and icons/widgets/home screens etc. then I'd rather stick with what I have.
TIA!
I'd recommend to use GooManager only to download the newest ROM and flash it from recovery.
I asume you're using AOKP Swagger from frankenstine, the same I use.
I just download the update from GooManager, boot to recovery, flash ROM, gapps and 4.2 stuff and are ready to go.
All my settings are their after updating - only AdAway needs a reconfiguration and a reboot (and I need to set my alarm clock since I'm overwriting that). Basically you keep all your settings except those you made to the kernel.
Regards

Oh perfect, yes indeed I am using that exact ROM.
OK so when I boot to recovery, I shouldn't do any wiping? Just simply flash the new file? Will the updated gapps package be in the download I get from GooManager?

I only wipe dalvik & cache after each update.
I can't say something about what GooManager downloads as "gapps", I use some I downloaded some weeks ago + some old version of 4.2 stuff. I might need to update my flash-setup too

Thanks lolmachine, for the benefit of anyone who might have the same question as me the following worked:
- Downloaded latest build of my AOKP Rom via GooManager
- Downloaded latest gapps package for my ROM via GooManager
- Boot to Recovery
- Flash new ROM file and then gapps package
- Restart.
My only question is, I didn't wipe davlik and cache so should I, and what difference does it make if I don't?
I used Goo the other day to flash, ummm, bugger, can't remember if it was an update or a new rom.
Oh now I remember, the latest one was an update to Bruce's Rom. I do believe when I tapped flash rom it booted to recovery (the one it installs) and I may have had to select "Install" from there, don't think so though. Either way, I used Goo to handle the install.
I didn't do a wipe. From what I've picked up, wiping is a good way to cover your butt. So if you're having issues and didn't wipe, you go back and do it all again with a wipe. Doing the wipe to start with means you can eliminate those types of issues from the start.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong (which I probably am )
Hi there, I also received an update to my ROM via Goo Manager. It is CyanogenMod 10.1 by Albinoman887 for my HTC Sensation XE. I am using the EXT4 bootloader. I just installed it a few nights ago so I am completely new to rooting. My question is that there is no option to wipe dalvik cach. EXT4 just says wipe cache, wipe data and wipe system. Does wipe cache wipe dalvik cache as well. Also do I need to re-flash gapps as well after updating and will this wipe my gmail accounts etc?
Thanks,
Adam

You want to select "wipe dalvik+cache" option when you flash an update.
There's no need to flash gapps after a ROM update.

im using albinoman's jelly bean rom
excuse me for noob doubts but
1) goo manager shows i have an update, so ive downloaded it. its a zip just like the rom n not just a small update. i have downloaded it now what should i do?
2) if i have to go to the recovery and flash the zip then i have to wipe only the cache right? Im using 4ext recovery.
3) will all my apps get uninstalled? what about the app data?
4) what about gapps? i have a gapps zip file, will i have to flash it again after the update?
Please reply thanks

Simple.
Go to recovery.
For s-on you must enable smartflash.
Do a nandroid backup.
Dirty flash the update (meaning flash over the previous rom without wiping).
Dirty flash gapps (signed only).
Wipe cache + dalvik.
Reboot.
If it can't boot/run properly then you can just restore the backup or do a clean flash.
First off I'm not experienced in any way, got my Sensation unlocked, rootet and installed Sultanxda's 4.4.2 ROM for sensation. I'm on S-On, too, if anyone wonders.
Updating didnt affect my apps as far as I can tell. Everything seems to be the way as before and everything seems to be working.
What I did was download the ROM manually since the download with goomanager didn't work. I downloaded gapps as backup because I didnt have the zip on my SD, just in case anything would go wrong.
You only need to boot into recovery, with S-On make sure smartflashing or something like that is on, select the zip, flash it and then select wipe cache +dalvik.
It's pretty much what AndroidSupporter318 wrote, just wanted to give feedback and say what I did in detail in case anyone was still wondering.

I guaranted 4EXT Recovery for this type of problem. U don't need to boot into recovery and work with 4ext is very simple.
