Hi all, I'm going to buy a droid razr hd. I have to pay full price to keep my unlimited data plan, so I was wondering, should I buy the the developer edition. I have a samsung galaxy 3 (unlocked and rooted) now but I find the reception is really bad, since I live in the country. I like to install custom rom's and everything that goes along with them, and from what I've read the bootloader will probably never be unlocked on the consumer edition razr hd. Any opinions welcomed.
Thanks
mozz
At full retail go for it.
Definitely do yourself a favor and pick up the Dev if you have to pay full price. It's what I did, and it's nice. Along with the unlocked bootloader (which obvious comes in handy for ROMs and Fastboot) you can go ahead and root JB, without having to worry about saving it from ICS.
thanks all, for the input

I have a droid x2, and an upgrade. I want a 4g lte phone, on verizon that is good for developing, ie unlocked bootloader and what not. I want the razr maxx, but knowing motorola, the bootloader will never be unlocked. I want the nexus, but it wont support my 32gb class 10 micro sd card. Any suggestions?

If that is what you want, your only choice is the Galaxy Nexus. I have one and I love it. I won't get a motorola phone until the bootloaders are unlocked.
My only problem with the Galaxy Nexus is that the connection is on 3G about 50% of the time whereas my Thunderbolt was always solidly on 4G in the same locations. It's caused by the radio issue that Verizon denies exists.
Maybe wait for the LG Spectrum, it'll be cheaper than the Nexus, and with it being LG, may or may not have a unlocked bootloader.

This is a very subjective question. One that would call for a lot of debate.
For instance if I were to say
Hey, buy the iPhone
or
Hey, buy the Nokia Lumia.
You need to provide some more details around your requirement.
If you're in critical need, the Galaxy Nexus is the way forth.
Though, the Sony Xperia's are coming soon, and with LOTS of awesome upgrades
Well like the previous poster said it's subjective.
However from my experience the an Iphone that is jailbroken has been the best for me personally.
I've had a droid and really liked it. Ended up getting and Iphone 4 and it was good but i went ahead and jail broke it and WOW! So much better. In my humble opinion.
The key here is a jailbroken phone. And there are apps where you can then use your phone as a wifi hotspot. of course this is just from personal experience and my opinion. Others may differ.
Nexus
Get the Galaxy Nexus. I think it is the best phone Verizon has to offer.

Get the Galaxy Nexus.
you can opt for Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX these are good phones with high quality features.
So, I recently acquired a Motorola Droid 2 Global... I rooted it, installed a nice version of ICS on it, and the phone is quite decent for what it is... instead of selling/trading it, I am looking to possibly use it for my OOPS phone... I do a lot of kayaking, some whitewater, and need a phone on the boat but need one which I care not if it dumps in the river... Problem is... I have a rooted beauty of a Samsung Galaxy that is my every day phone thru T-Mobile (and LOVE IT!)... This Moto is thru Verizon... can I make it compatible w/ T-Mobile so I can sim card swap and call it a day??

Samsung Galaxy S4 Dev Edition hitting Verizon and AT&T

So if you are on ATT or Verizon, and want to flash ROM's and kernels on the S4, without waiting for a hack to fix the lock bootloader, that can be easily patched away down the road, looks like we gotta pay full price for a phone, that is unlocked ?
This next bit of news will come as a huge surprise to Verizon Wireless customers. Samsung has announced that it will be releasing their Galaxy S4 Developer Edition smartphone on both Verizon Wireless and AT&T. Yes you read that right. Verizon Wireless is actually going to allow a bootloader unlocked Samsung Galaxy S4 on their network. Keep in mind though that these phone will not come subsidized, so customers will be paying full retail for the handset. The handset will be available with 16GB of onboard memory and in one color (Black Mist.) There is no official word on release dates or how these handsets will be offered, but that info should be hitting the web sometime soon.
Anyone going to pull the trigger when this handset is released?
I've been searching but haven't been able to find if Motorola has a Lollipop update for the Verizon prepaid Moto G. It's pretty cheap at Best Buy right now so I was thinking about buying one to play with on WiFi-only but I would prefer Lollipop if possible.

If there's no official update, how easy is it to root and flash? Is it even possible?
Thanks!
It's not yet possible to root or unlock the bootloader.
I also purchased some at BestBuy for $20 and am using for WiFi only. Would love to be able to load custom ROMs.
There may be hope -

Hello, so as an AOSP lover and on verizon, this phone could be a good option about me. When I bought my S3 years back, I only used AOSP roms. Eventually, I got a note 4 in hopes of it getting root. Well... Obviously didn't go well, so I'm rolling on my S3 again. Would it be worth it to sell my Note 4 and buy this phone? It has better specs than an S3. So a few questions...
How does the development compare? I see we have some CM13 builds w/ probably some official builds soon. Does it have exceptional development?
What is the process of rooting like? From my understanding, you unlock the bootloader similar to a nexus device and then flash SU in TWRP, yes? So it won't matter what android version it's running @ the time?
How exactly do unlocked phones work? I've only used two year contracts in the past, I don't understand the whole concept of unlocked phones, to be honest.
Will the bootloader be able to be unlocked if I use verizon? I planned to buy the phone straight from moto so it is unlocked, but my friend's OG Moto G isn't able to be unlocked even though he bought it from Amazon (He is on verizon).
Thanks, XDA.
