[Q] Lower WIFI performance after installing WildChild 3.3 - General Questions and Answers

I installed WildChild v.3.3 [Odex] by Tigger31337 in my Wildfire S a week ago, and overall I am very happy with it.
The only problem I have found is now it is very difficult for me to connect to some WIFI networks I used to connect very easily.
The kernel is:
[email protected]And18-2 #24
Baseband:
47.23e.35.3038H_7.57.39.10M
Is there a different kernel with better WIFI performance on low signal networks or any other thing I could try?
I have tried many ROMs and I really want to stick with WildChild.
Thanks!

[Q] 2.3.5 on I9023 - Wifi improvements?

Hey guys,
I believe our phone's bad wifi reception is a known problem.
I read at several places that 2.3.5 was supposed to improve matters for the 4g model. Is that correct - and can we expect the same for the non-4g? Have any of you had a chance to test this?
i didnt face such prob in 2.3.4
now im in 2.3.5 MIUI rom... no different~
MIUI including 2.3.5 changes (NO new radio) enhanced my wifi experience by 200% (going from 1 bar to 3 constantly). Same speed, just less drops of connection.
Might have been MIUI (see signature) or the 2.3.5, can't verify that.

[Q] Losing Internet and WiFi occasionally??

First off if this is the wrong place i apologize. I have searched for the better part of the day on a couple issues and haven't found any solutions to my last problem. I have a htc inspire running CM7 stable. The other day i started to flash different kernels to try them out. I started off using Lordmod V8.1 BFS. I liked everything about it but i was experiencing my data connection and wifi would stop working through out the day and i have to reset my phone and it would work. Then it would happen a little later on. Next I installed TalonACE 7x30 v1.1.1 BFS and have had only a couple internet drops and wifi but mostly the same problems. Sometimes the bars would be gray other times it would still be green but with no connection. I also flashed a new radio. (a recommend one from xda) 12.54.60.25P_26.09.04.11_M2.
So my question is, is it the kernels, CM7, or the new radio I flashed. Also if anyone knows a link to my question please inform me or any methods to fix this issue. Thanks
This actually has been an ongoing battle to pinpoint in lordmods thread. The consensus is leaning towards it being a rom issue. Based on my testing I tend to agree. For now the only "fix" is to use cfs kernels
I am experiencing this as well.
HTC Inspire 4G
BBMod Rom v1.6.0b
TalonACE v1.1.2 BFS (BRAZILIANWAX)
No UV
I'm using Absolution which is cm7 based and had similar problems along with battery issues, so I changed to talonace miui 1.09, all mi issues are gone. Also I use stock radio

[Q] WiFi reception difference between ROM's

Hello,
I'm using Senseless Extreme with good WiFi reception.
I have flashed HyperSensation-CM7.1-v0.7 and found out that WiFi reception become very very weak in the same settings.
Is there any chance to find out the difference in between those ROMs and tweak the Sensation CM7 to get better WiFi reception?
Thanks in advance.

They are very different ROMs. Mine is based off a sense base and CM7 is like stock android !
wifi driver?

i would assume that's depend on wifi driver - can it be ported over?
persiansown: sorry, i have not tried your rom yet.
some devs improve their wifi drivers for better range and whatnot. cm7 isnt fully stable and its devs havent put those things in yet. try Cdtdroids roms. he does em great!
sense kernel w/ broadcom firmware

the module for the broadcom wifi chip is in sense stock ROM, as well as firmware and fine tune parameters.
seems like on CM kernels there is no tweaks on that level, and for me that's kinda unusual (on my gentoo box it's a usual routine to build my own specific kernel)
or well, I have not tried Cdtdroid's roms so will give it a try
thanks

How are you quantifying Good and Very Weak ? If it's just the WIFI bars you need to realise that they have NO direct correlation with the actual signal.
It's easy to spoof perceived signal strength based on the bars shown.
Do the different ROMs you mention actually perform differently ?
There is a way to see what the RSSI value is, can't remember where it is in the settings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Received_signal_strength_indication
The difference is in ability to connect to the router from a next room, on one - I can comfortably browse, on another - I can not even connect to the AP.

Ahh, OK a real world issue. Hmm that's concerning.
Hmm, more digging needed. GL and I'll keep an eye out for any useful info.
Thanks a lot.
Drop me a PM if you need some testing.
I would love to see bare minimal ROM.
I think most of the sense roms have some improved wifi drivers over the CM/ASOP based ones.
MIUI-110280 build good reception
I am toying with MIUI ROM and the wifi reception is similar to SenslessExtreme and there is CM kernel.
so i think it's matter of the firmware and settings for broadcom wifi chip

Advantages of the new baseband

Hi all,
Having updated two over to the new baseband (June 2011 to March 2012) and sticking with stock on one while using cm7 on the other, my experience has been as follows:
* battery life is the same. Cm7 much better than stock but then it's cm7. I went from Weapon to stock 2.3.4 and did not see a noticeable difference.
* GPS fix is a function of well written GPS.conf. I see a slight improvement in lock from cold start but nothing outside of normal variance.
So what was the purpose of the new baseband? To me it is now appearing to be just a date change in a field . (Obviously there are differences otherwise call audio would work without any changes).
Thoughts? Note that I had to subtract wishful thinking to reach my conclusions.

Huge signal strength boost on my end. My dorm I used to get no signal. Now I get two to three.
Sent from my paranoid Nexus 7.
At least for me, the GPS was massively improved. GPS fix is not purely a function of well written GPS.conf.
On stock 21e/2.3.3 - my GPS barely worked. It was intermittently better on cm7.x - but it was still a POS.. rather .. GPOS (global piece of.. )
On stock 21y/2.3.4 - my gps was massively better, but over all it was like a whole new phone.
On 21y baseband + CM7.2 it works really well, and WIPER/A-GPS works as long as I have data connection.

There are also supposed to be battery life improvements - but this only affected Stock Rom, CM7 was not noticeably affected.
Furthermore, I find that the newer SIM.. TM9177 works .. whereas with 21e.. only the TM9073 SIM worked..
I have also found that my HSPA+ connections are slower - but more reliable.. e.g. now I get a solid 5 mbps down, between 1 and 2 mbps up - with 21e - I occasionally has 10 mbps down - but it was very inconsistent - it would connect/drop all the time - and not necessarily a function of signal strength (e.g. standing in one place the signal would vary a lot) . 21y just plain works better.
One other change - I used to be able to use Faux123 kernels on CM7, but now I can only use Stock CM7 or Trinity - the Faux123 drain battery among other problems. No idea.. it isn't a bad flash, but my phone went from tolerating Faux123 to absolutely refusing to use his kernels.
That being said, it is widely reported (without citations!) that there was poor quality control on the LG manufacturing of G2x.. so the phones apparently vary quite a bit as to what does/doesn't work. I would say my phone never ran 'right' on 21e.. but it feels 'right' on 21y.
I wish I could use the new baseband, I get less disconnects with it.
However I can't live without bluetooth calling, and cm 7.2 for some ??!?!?!? reason still has not fixed the bluetooth bug.

Poor WIfi speeds with CM7.2

Hmmm, I'm in a bit of tough spot.
My Wifi speeds are horrible on a CM7.2 ROM. I'm using a custom rom (from cm forum) that someone built to solve the bad bluetooth headset profile that was regressed into the cm7.2 release. I need cm7.2 cause its' bluetooth also supports HID. Unfortunately, wifi speeds suck in this rom. I can't remember whether the cm7.2 stable had poor wifi speeds.
Does anyone recall what this wifi problem was, and how to fix it?
Thx,
rickbol

You could use smanager ads or pro along with v6 supercharger ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18703418&postcount=5021 ). There is a 3g and wifi hack in that script.

It's actually in the 3G TurboCharger script, but it is on the thread you linked to.
Thanks, I'm reviewing those scripts.
Additional info... I disabled N support on my AP and my wifi throughput increased from 300-1000 kbs to a consistent 3000-4000 kbs. So that's alot better. But, CM7.2 wifi consistently shows a ~10DBm sensitivity deficit compared to another phone sitting next to it. Also, the Evo Shift stock ROMs sensitivity was more on order with this other phone. So I don't know if the sensitivity deficit is a bug, or part of the power\battery management.
I'm new to CM7.x, so I don't know how I can best test these thing. If I plug the phone in, does it automatically run in "Performance" mode for all features?
The issue I'm facing is I'm trying to use GrooveIP (VoIP) over Google Voice. I was having issues with this phone, and I beleive they were related to the wifi performance.
Any other suggestions for testing or debugging?

As I continue to investigate this wifi issue, I discover that this CM7.2 has no tiwlan*.ini anywhere on the system. Other "slow wifi" reports mention using a CM6.x tiwlan.ini to fix CM7.2 wifi issues.
Can anyone confirm that a CM7.2 ROM should have tiwlan.ini? Where is it? The only file in /etc/wifi, /system/etc/wifi on this machine\rom is wpa_supplicant.conf.
What I'm really looking for is a ROM that: supports all the standard evo shift hardware stuff (inlcluding wimax), plus, bluetooth HID. It be great if it also improved on battery life.
Any contenders\suggestions?
Thx,

I don't know if you have any options with all those on the Shift.
If you are having trouble with CM7 not working well enough for you then stick with a STOCK based sense rom, every asop GB rom is based around the work done on CM7.

I would suggest strapped365's 2.77.651.8 [Rooted Stock-O.T.A] Rom, or Chad The Pathfinder's Stock Mod [SENSE 2.1 | 2.3.4]. There are quite a few others, these are just two of the latest that are quite stable .
Thanks for the ROM suggestions. I actually have the StockMod as my Sense rom for when I have to update Profile and PRL (I recently switched to Ting... so far, so good).
I've been able to poke around a bit down in linux on CM7. I'm suspecting the bcm4329.ko driver has some config wrong in it, but I don't know how to t-shoot settings really. Since the sensitivity is down by ~-10dBm, but otherwise working, I almost think misconfigured antennas or something. "iwconfig eth0" often reports relatively high "Noise level" and some "Tx excessive retries" although I don't have lots of 2.4GHz equipment competing for the spectrum (afaik).
Regarding the linux layer in Android, do both CM and Sense use pretty much the same implementations with regards to (wifi) hardware, or do they use different "management" interfaces? I guess CM is the one that departs most from "stock", but I don't yet have a feel for whether these departures are mostly in the Android layer, or whether they go deep under the hood into the kernel.
This "low-sensitivity wifi" issue is a widely reported issue thru all makes of phones and versions of (at least) CM, but I have yet to come across any positive diagnosis of the source of the issue (although, given the reports, I suspect a common cause). My hunt continues. Seems all the later dev of CM forgoes wimax functionality... and while wimax hasn't proved to be widely available, it does exist in my area, and 3G is so saturated that it's worth trying wimax when available.
Thanks for the help,
rickbol
