Ability to hide built in apps with JB? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I remember on my Nexus 7 (that I gave away so I no longer have) that I could hide apps through settings > apps > (select app) > hide, giving the impression that it was deleted from the phone. Why isn't this feature available on our version of JB?

I'm still able to disable apps...All I tried worked except for the one called "Apps" with a Verizon logo (VZ Nav, NFL Mobile, Real Racing, Slacker Radio...). All those and a few more I was able to disable in JB.

Strange. I don't have that function at all. I flashed the leaked verizon JB update posted a couple days ago. Did you take that route or did you get the OTA update?

I was able to do the same in the JB OTA on the wife's phone.
Almost dont need root.... unless you want to flash ROM's. She's happy to get rid of most of the Verizon crap.

The disable button is in the view of all apps but not on the installed or running views. Some can be disabled directly. Those that can't, something like Titanium Backup will. The Verizon "Apps" won't allow the disable button but Titanium Backup will allow it to be "frozen".

You may also have to uninstall updates before you can hide the apps.

Definitely a good thing to know. Crazy how long these lists can get...
I've always frozen Wifi Sharing 1.0 and Wifi Sharing manager 1.0. Pretty sure these aren't required and never known them to be an issue that I'm aware of.
All the SNS crap from Samsung is save to freeze or remove
just wondering why you want to freeze swype?
Otherwise, great list, thanks

Its generally safest to freeze. When a system update gets pushed out many times you have to have all the original apps and bloat installed or it will fail. So to be safe you freeze them and when you get notified there is an update you unfreeze all the apps to be safe.
Hope this makes some sense.
I am sorry buddy. I am only 3 weeks old in android ecosystem and still trying to figure how to make things little stable. Do I need to root my phone to freeze all these apps? or if i can freeze some without rooting please lemme know how to freeze. thanks!

Yes, you will need root.
To freeze the apps, you need to get the Titanium Backup app in the market. (It's one of those must have tools.) Besides backing up (obviously) you can click on a specific app to get a menu. This menu will have the freeze option. Note that you don't want the long press menu if you just want to freeze an app. Long press brings up a different menu.
Your list seems to be relative. Some people actually like AT&T Wifi hot spots. Who doesn't like free wifi?

Freezing the app basically makes the app become completely dormant. It still resides on the phone but the system doesn't see it. It basically hides it from anything that might try to use it. You do need the paid version of Titanium Backup to use it but it's easily worth the minimal cost.

but its nice to have the back up and other options you get from TiBu. This is pretty nice for rom users as well that want to swich around and not have to reinstall everything.
Tried to freeze Live TV . TiBU says it's frozen but the icon is still there. When I tap on it, phone says it's not installed. How do I get rid of the icon?
To get rid of the icon you'll have to uninstall the app. It says its not installed because its frozen, the system won't run that app. But the app is still on the phone. I think its best just to leave them frozen.

A good HSPA connection is typically faster (ignoring ping) than an AT&T Hotspost unless you are standing on top of it.

List of bloat that can be (safely) removed

Okay, if another thread with a listing exists, please point me there and I'll ask to have this deleted. I did search "bloat", "remove apps", and so on and based on thread titles (sorry - can't check every one especially when the title suggests nothing obvious) and found nothing.
I'm certain that all of the various Google Play apps, i.e. Magazines, Books, Movies & TV can go, plus they're downloadable from the Play Store if I ever want them back.
-- What about the various Verizon apps, i.e. Tones ? Is Mobile Hotspot a Verizon app or an Android one ? FWIW, if I tether, I won't use that...
-- What about Samsung's apps like S Memo, S Suggest, AllShare Play, Group Play, etc ?
Any related widgets will go too !
If there's others, please list them ! I do know that just because I don't recognize an app that it doesn't mean it's safe or wise to delete it as many are used behind-the-scenes and are critical. Finally, I'm backing up any apps that I do delete just in case.

Settings.apk that is the hotspot app.
DO NOT REMOVE for obvious reasons. If you don't like the icon hide it. Almost every launcher (even stock) allows you to hide apps

Hehe, yeap, I know that you can't remove that APK ! I didn't know you could hide apps with the stock launcher. Coming from HTC phones, though I typically ran non-Sense ROMs, you couldn't hide apps.
Can't you just use TiBu and freeze the apps?

Verizon Galaxy S III apps safe to remove
I know I'm necro-ing a thread, but I've just made my own list. (Somehow I missed this post.) I see different apps in my list from the one above, so I figured I would share it anyway!
This list is a copy of the one found here (Sprint version), with a new sheet for the Verizon version. I've stripped out the apps that were in the former list, updated APK names, and went through each app on my phone to do this. Oh, I'm running 4.1.2 on a stock rooted ROM, and I used Titanium Backup to inspect the various apps and test freezing/removing them.
Click here for the list. And feel free to make your own copies!
Edit: My list was for prior to 4.3, so it's likely not 100% accurate anymore. Can't really verify that, I'm afraid, as I used this pre-rooted stock ROM to install 4.3 on my phone, and it already had a great deal of stuff stripped out. Since then, however, I've switched to T-Mobile and picked up a Nexus 5, so I won't be able to maintain the list. (Though I'll leave it available just in case.)

Deleting Google Apps

Hi all. Quick question; searched and didn't find a response. So...
There are a few Google apps I'd really like to lose. Namely Play Books, Play Movies/TV, Play Newstand, and Play Games. I'm never going to use them, so I'd just as soon uninstall them. My question is can I uninstall these through Titanium Backup or are they crucial system apps that I should just leave alone and learn to live with?
Thanks!
You can deactivate them in settings -> apps. You will not gain more storage, but the apps will disappear. They can be enabled again of course

I freeze every one of those apps with Titanium backup every time I install gaaps or return to stock. No issues with them frozen on N5 at all.

Well, I don't see any advantage in freezing them with TiBa. Of course it works flawlessly, but my method also does plus you don't need a third-party app
Actually, all deactivating them in Apps does is uninstall the updates. They're still there.

The advantage in freezing them is you retain the ability to take OTA updates without reflashing system.

Titanium Backup is worth the price. The UI is terrible. Still can't find a replacement I'm happy with.

I would think most people who are active on these threads chose a nexus for ease of changing ROMS. I would lose my mind doing that without the pro version of TiBu. Have it anyway so used it. Also, freeze is nice because I can quickly thaw out a memory hog program, use it as I need to and then quickly refreeze it with all data in tact.

You can delete any app with the full version of Titanium Backup.
But I'm pretty sure that you can disable them like I mentioned above and still receive OTA's Am I wrong?

[Q] MotoCare app data keeps growing

After I saw that the data generated by the MotoCare app was very large, I decided to clear this data (through settings>apps).
In Motorola Privacy settings I have disabled MotoCare.
Two weeks have passed now and again my MotoCare data has grown substantial, being at 11,62Mb now.
Does anybode else also have this growing data of MotoCare?
What is this app collecting even if it is turned off?
I completely disabled motocare app and stuff, you can do the same in easy way. For me it's an unuseful service and i completely disabled. You need it?
This is unfortunatelly one of the Moto apps that I can not disable.
Other apps I disabled but for this one the button is grayed out.
How did you disabled this one?
I used Titanium Backup
Thanks, will try that as well.
But will it be disabled or did you remove it ?
I don't want to remove any system apps so I prefer to only disable it.
No man, i only disabled them, not remove, better keep them there for sure. Oh ehm, make always a backup before you touch something in system partition

Are you rooted?
If yes - you can use Unninstaller Pro. It has "Freeze" function per app.
App won`t work, but it won`t be uninstalled either and you can unfreeze it in any moment.
Cheers.
Yes, my MotoG is rooted.
I will give it a try.
Thanks.
I think that Titanium Backup is really better
Since the freeze option is only available in the pro version of Titanium, I tried another app.
App Quarantaine is doing the job very well so far.
I also read something about Greenify, is this recommended above the others?

New Galaxy S6 Facebook,Skype and Instagram

Just noticed that on the Galaxy S6 it came with Facebook,Instagram and Skype pre-installed with no uninstall option except for a disable or Force Stop option of which we all know is useless for privacy concerns. Sucks that Samsung and HTC gave into Facebook for these demands. Those that seek Knox is safe, wait till you see Facebook ask or show you your email log on ID from your knox
The same problem on the HTC ONE M9 with Facebook.
A way to completely uninstall these few would be nice.
I think you would need to root, probably using chainfires recently released root, then install Titanium backup and freeze or delete the apps. Root Explorer would also allow you to delete the apps but Titanium is easier.
I don't think you'll be the only one wanting to do this, I sure will.
Here is a picture of the no uninstall option on S6 Edge.
PS: Not sure what on earth XDA Uploads from our computers these days because uploading a simple picture takes forever on a computer or even from a smartphone. I wonder if anything else is being uploaded besides the picture we wish to upload here. Not only that but then in the end it turns picture sideways..
I was not happy that i had instagram, facebook, messenger, skype, whatsapp preinstalled. My strides for privacy just took 10 steps back. I had uninstalled facebook/messenger on my G2 and just created a shortcut to facebook in my browser and changed the icon to facebook so it looks the same now i get to deal with extra battery drain and privacy issues
