Definitely a good thing to know. Crazy how long these lists can get...
I've always frozen Wifi Sharing 1.0 and Wifi Sharing manager 1.0. Pretty sure these aren't required and never known them to be an issue that I'm aware of.
All the SNS crap from Samsung is save to freeze or remove
just wondering why you want to freeze swype?
Otherwise, great list, thanks

Its generally safest to freeze. When a system update gets pushed out many times you have to have all the original apps and bloat installed or it will fail. So to be safe you freeze them and when you get notified there is an update you unfreeze all the apps to be safe.
Hope this makes some sense.
I am sorry buddy. I am only 3 weeks old in android ecosystem and still trying to figure how to make things little stable. Do I need to root my phone to freeze all these apps? or if i can freeze some without rooting please lemme know how to freeze. thanks!

Yes, you will need root.
To freeze the apps, you need to get the Titanium Backup app in the market. (It's one of those must have tools.) Besides backing up (obviously) you can click on a specific app to get a menu. This menu will have the freeze option. Note that you don't want the long press menu if you just want to freeze an app. Long press brings up a different menu.
Your list seems to be relative. Some people actually like AT&T Wifi hot spots. Who doesn't like free wifi?
Dumb question: What does freezing these apps do?

Freezing the app basically makes the app become completely dormant. It still resides on the phone but the system doesn't see it. It basically hides it from anything that might try to use it. You do need the paid version of Titanium Backup to use it but it's easily worth the minimal cost.

but its nice to have the back up and other options you get from TiBu. This is pretty nice for rom users as well that want to swich around and not have to reinstall everything.
Tried to freeze Live TV . TiBU says it's frozen but the icon is still there. When I tap on it, phone says it's not installed. How do I get rid of the icon?
To get rid of the icon you'll have to uninstall the app. It says its not installed because its frozen, the system won't run that app. But the app is still on the phone. I think its best just to leave them frozen.

A good HSPA connection is typically faster (ignoring ping) than an AT&T Hotspost unless you are standing on top of it.

I am new to the Skyrocket; been using an Atrix for the last year.
The bloat bugged me and freezing didn't get rid of the app store icons so I used ti to uninstall the following:
Att Barcode
Att Nav
Featured apps
Movies
Media Hub
NFS shift
Will this cause me any issues?
(I guess I should have asked before I did it... )

No those are fine. They take a while to disappear after you freeze them. Sometimes you have to reboot, but they will disappear
Make a backup of anything you want to uninstall.
If the market link is showing up for an app that is frozen you can long press on the app in TB and then select "detach from Market".
I will list the Apps I felt were bloat and subsequently either disabled or removed all together.
I will also discuss how I got Mobile Life Contacts to go "EFF" itself (in other words, I actually disabled it). Anybody that owns the phone should know how hard this is.
I'm interested in finding out how T-Mobile Name ID can be removed and or disabled. If anybody knows how to disable the POS that is T-Mobile Name ID please share the solution.
Blatant Bloat:
1) 411 & More
2) Bonus Apps
3) Game Base
4) HTCDB-XXX (languages for keyboard)
5) Mobile Hotspot (I realize this app is for tethering but it's bloat because this should be free)
8) MobileLife Contacts *** More on this below
9) More for Me
10) My T-Mobile (talk about worthless, this kind of stuff should be removable!)
11) T-Mobile Mall
12) T-Mobile TV
13) Visual Voicemail (thanks but NO THANKS T-Mobile, Google offers this for free)
14) Watch
15) Zinio (UTTER GARBAGE)
Potential Bloat:
1) Facebook
2) Flickr
3) Google Play Movies
4) Google+
5) Slacker
6) Twitter
While I can appreciate T-Mobile having initiative, not everybody has accounts or is interested in using these social networks or services. It would be nice if the phone allowed us to simply REMOVE what we do not wish to use.
***Mobile Life Contacts***
The phone normally tells you this app is being used by other apps and as such a factory reset is required. I PERSONALLY reset my device about 5 freaking times today and each time the app would tell me I need to do a factory reset. After that I decided to disable (not REMOVE) all messaging and contacts app to see if it would then budge. It didn't. I got EXTREMELY upset and decided I would apply a "scorched earth method". I disabled EVERY SINGLE thing that I could from the As down to the Ms until I got to MobileLife contacts. At which point I checked the app and the "Disable" button was no longer grayed out.
I realize this is tedious, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to scorch the Earth as I did. Just disable stuff alphabetically starting from the As and keep checking to see if the app can be disabled. Also I'm pretty sure you don't have to disable the HTCDB-XXX stuff as I did.
Don't forget Where's My Water. That's a bloat game they installed.
Have you noticed any adverse effects on the phone's behavior?
I just went and disabled most of these myself, but for me it's too soon to tell.

There is no adverse effect unless you actually use the services.
I just removed every single Sense widget and app out there (and all entries associated with them) + all bloat etc....so far so good...1st boot was on "Updating" OS screen for a while....

The updating OS screen is just the system rebuilding caches for apps. Nothing to worry about.

This is one of the first things I did once I was rooted. I noticed that If you freeze/uninstall the visual voicemail. you will get a error when you receive a voicemail.
Where is the disable function ? I always used tb to remove bloat.

Go to manage apps, then look up each individual app and most will allow you to disable. It's a (much appreciated) feature of Sense 4.
I don't mind Sense and one of the two reasons I'd ever want to root this phone would be to remove all this crap. thankfully that's not necessary like it used to be.
For Mobile Life contacts all you have to do is log in to tmobile.com, delete all your contacts from the website, then tell the phone to quit syncing. viola.

I removed EVERYTHING (Spy soft, Sense apps and widgets that I dont use, and all bloat), my side effect are (or maybe it was like that before)
International Youtube subscriptions not showing up in youtube app (most likely Youtube and ICS issue), Geniewidget when check hourly forecast it FCs, and last issue is Picasa "share" doesnt work (this is also probably some screw up by HTC or Tmobile though)

Not even Verizon has removed it as far as I know Most people won't know about it so I would assume they don't care too much.
That said, not EVERYTHING can be disabled. I don't remember what since I rooted and removed them that way, but there was one or two things that I couldn't disable.
I removed everything on the list using root explorer..rebooted and worked fine with no issues. I even removed the Tmo IQ file from the apps in system. Still no issues in signal strength. Also after your done try wiping cache/dalvik and fixing permissions.

I actually think it might just be the phone itself. (Whether it's software or hardware, I'm not sure yet.) I still believe that T-Mobile Highlight being disabled made the problem much worse though.

I managed to disable the following:
411 & More
Access T-Mobile** - uninstall updates became My t-Mobile, disabled
Bonus Apps*
Game Base
Highlight
More for Me
Slacker*
TMo TV*
TMo Mall*
Where's My Water*
Zinio*
* these apps I had to uninstall the updates before the option to disable appeared
** for this app, when I uninstalled the updates, it became "My T-Mobile" and then I disabled it.
I didn't do much else, rebooted and all seems well.
This shouldn't affect getting any kind of updates/patches from T-Mobile, right?
Thanks for the tip!
Hey, guys, when I get my S3 on Wednesday, I'm going to root it ASAP.
I want to remove as much bloatware as I can without losing the cool and useful things Samsung has added to their UI. Like S-voice the eyeball watching thing, the gestures etc are all things I want to keep.
What I don't want is verizon nag screens and useless apps and adware that they put on.
Any suggestions or point me to a thread where this is already talked about?
Geez No response yet? I would like to know this as well....
Id like to know to. In the mean time, I just hid them. There was only 4 apps from VZ and the only one that I use is the mobile hotspot app.
VZ mobile, apps, and nav are hidden and never seem to show up in my running apps.
I've froze in titanium backup without issue so far...
Allshare (All 3 of them)
Amazon Kindle
Apps 3.05.78
ColorGoogle+
Guided Tours
Keis air (Both)
Media Hub
Music Hub
S Suggest
S Voice
Samsung Account
V Cast Tones
Voicemail
VPN Client
VZ Nav
Yahoo (both)
Do either of the Kies apps need to be enabled in order to receive OTA updates?
I would recommend using an app like Titanium Backup that has the capability to freeze applications rather than deleting them, so you can play around with it and disable what you don't use or don't like.
I also recommend using the standard ICS application disabling capabilities first, then using a solution like Titanium Backup for those apps that cannot normally be disabled.
For the record, on my Verizon S3 I have roughly 30 applications frozen/disabled.
I actually worked in the opposite direction. I flashed the stripped version onto my phone and then manually added back the apps that I wanted to keep via Root Explorer. The only apps that I added back were Divx, Video Player, and Music FX. The phone runs fast and battery life has been GODLIKE.
Stripped ROM thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1759642
Picking Up my GS4 on the 10th/11th and am immediately planning on Rooting it and then applying extensive boatware and lag controls.
I would very much appreciate if everyone listed the apps they Removed (R) or Disabled (D) as well as other settings that they applied to minimize the workload on the phone. I understand that these issues have been tackled individually but I'd like a consolidated thread where each person lists what they did and how big of a difference it made.
Below is a FAKE example of how I'd think these replies should be organized.
Looking for the following format:
D = Disabled R=Removed
APPS
D - App A
D - App B
R - App C
etc...
Settings Applied
- Changed Transition effect from 2 - 0.5 (location Developer settings)
- Turned off easy mode (location screen settings)
- etc...
Other Apps Used To Reduce/Eliminate Lag
- Installed XXXX App and did the following
a) changed XXX setting to off
b) changed YYYY setting to on
c) etc.
Effects - Phone feels much faster, I previously notice a lag [insert action here] and now I [do/don't/other]
This would really help us all just get all of our settings in sync with one another and move on from this lag and bloatware issue.
Root it and check my kernel mod settings here in General section.
There is a Google Docs spreadsheet that the guys over at the International S4 Forum have been working on. I've also contributed to it, however I noticed that the International S4 actually has less bloatware, and I don't mean Carrier bloat. It actually has less in the System Apps directory. Here is the List Of Removable Bloatware I was talking about.
Now we just need to create one similar that will apply to the SGH-i337 & SGH-i337M.

I'm just starting a Google Doc Spreadsheet right now and we can all contribute to updating it. Now, because there is only one version of the SGH-i337 and many versions of the SGH-i337M (TELUS, Bell, Rogers, Fido, Virgin Mobile, Koodo) I'll create separate pages since they all have their own carrier bloatware.

I'm experiencing no lag so I didn't bother looking for ways to solve that. I disabled most stuff that can be disabled. It's pretty easy to figure out what can be disabled if you've done it before. You can pretty much disable anything Samsung. There are a bunch of camera options that you might want to keep. E.g., BeautyFace. I forgot which app it was but disabling it prevented me from changing the lockscreen wallpaper so I re-enabled that. The only Samsung app I kept was WatchON to control my TV.

Well I've been at this all night. I'll continue with it later this afternoon, but here is the spreadsheet I've been working on. I was inspired to make this list by another user over in the International S4 forum.
This list will cover both the AT&T variant, as well as our Canadian i337M. I have the TELUS S4 which only had 1 carrier bloat app so I'll need everyone to help add to this list. At the moment I don't have the spreadsheet open ended for editing as the guys over in the International S4 forum had their document hijacked with random joke messages like "qwertyyyyyy", etc.
I'd really appreciate it if you could all share which carrier apps come with your version of your phones. I would need to know the .apk filename as well as the name that is displayed for the app.

It flat out scream now yes?
Deleting all the apps I did might not be for most people as they may want some of that junk.
I bought the phone for it's 5" 1080p screen and the processor. I can honestly care less about the AT&T / Samsung junk / crap. I don't see any of them as 'features'
If it helps, hit thanks!
Hello, read a lot of threads regarding lag during UI usage and especially keyboard and messaging, which i too experienced stock. My GS4 is now absolutely lag free, and underclocked too. Here is what i did...
Root phone (need this for some of the features on some apps)
Titanium Backup (need to freeze some apps)
disable S-Voice (i never used it; i always feel weird talking to or being talked to by a machine anyways)
disable Google Now (i never use it anyways; its a pain to get to and i dont use any of the social networking or news feeds either)
Disable TouchWiz Home
LagFix app (i have pro, mine is scheduled to run once a night)
If anyone cares, i will post my SetCPU settings as well, but on stock or even powersave it should run VERY quick. My phone is Korean, my GF's is Chinese; NEITHER has a bit of lag. I dont use any AT&T services, mobile print services, allshare/screen sharing, Google+/Facebook (or any social networks actually) so i have all of that disabled, but the main advantages come from disabling S Voice, Google Now, using LagFix app and TouchWiz Home
My Freeze list has other apps frozen you may not have, or i may have some frozen that i dont use but you do; they are all safe to freeze

But regardless your tips are quite useful, though i wont use all of those.

I use SmartStay all the time and Multiwindow sometimes, but i never use S Voice (or any voice recognition software; if i cant pay full attention to my phone without detriment i dont use it), and i dont use/like google now. I also dont use any social networks, S Health (which hasnt worked since i rooted), etc. Thats just me.
This is a 'safe to freeze' list, but freezing S Voice, TouchWiz Home, Easy Mode (home) and Google Now have a HUGE impact on reducing lag on stock ROM/Kernel. If you look, i disabled a LOT of Google apps too; i have physical books, and dont use google play to buy movies/tv shows/music; id rather buy and load them (automatically) myself so i can use them on more than one device.
i disabled everything i dont use, but S Voice and Google Now made the greatest impact on lag; Its totally gone. I dont like to have any processes ill never use running or visible; i prefer a very simple clean interface and list of apps; again thats me.
Basically, the best of stock android with the samsung add-ons i like and use is all that i want, and not a kilobyte more.

Interesting info but I never notice an increase in lag when I turn Google Now on. I disable(haven't rooted0 most of the apps you freeze including S Voice, run Nova Launcher over Touchwiz and have never had a problem with lag on this phone.

Google Now is the least lag-adding; its negligible. S Voice, TouchWiz Home, and EasyMode/Home are the worst for it. Why they create so much lag i dont know, i dont use them, so therefor i dont care. I have a Korean S4, my GF has a Chinese S4; neither of us have lag after we disabled those three.
I run WAY underclocked; with SetCPU, 384 minimum, 1242 max Mhz. Slight lag coming out of deep sleep/idle for a long time, but ZERO lag in messaging with stock or GoSMSpro, and no problems with high end games (dont play them, just wanted to see if underclocking would create issues/crashes. they dont).
Like i said, if you disable all the things you dont/wont use, it will help. There is a LOT i dont use, but S Voice/TouchWiz/EasyMode made the biggest difference; more than everything else combined.
What about these?
Blurb checkout
Epsonprintservice
Gallery if using 3rd party like QuickPic
Samsung apps widget
com.androidproviders.partnerbookmarks
Samsung hub uodater
Story album widget
Travel 1.0
Travel widget 1.0
All calendar stuff ie if using 3rd party like Jorte
Direct connect manager 3.0
Easy settings.
Key chain (Wtf is this?)
Mobile print
Nearby devices
Nearby service
Picasa uploader
Also, freezing Samsung apps may prevent you from getting updates to WatchON, s health etc.
I mean, you could freeze the living piss out of this phone. But there comes a point, where if you're going to freeze all the bloat, why not just flash a deodexed debloated rom like ib4st1ds. The only stuff I have frozen is what I've seen running..
Keep up the good work slade. Nice to see people trying to help others.

Mine doesn't lag as well. Damn got the faulty batch. Also, I froze all the ATT crap but I still have some Samsung apps like S-health, watch on and stuff. I also froze google apps like Google books, music etc as I noticed Google music was always running. Don't know about lag but it also helps with battery....

First thing I did was run stock deodexed. Turned S Voice off from home button and turned the animator scales to 0.5x. Its very fast lol.

Thanks OP. That home button thing really sped things up.
On a side note just a heads up to anyone going on a freezing spree. I noticed when I froze Samsung syncadapters 2.5.6 I was not able to send mms pics anymore.

I received my AT&T SGH-I337 yesterday, I can’t believe how lag it is, I’m comparing it with an S3, and it’s totally worst, I spec that disabling this thing helps. thx.
