I've been without a phone for about 3 months now. My Curve 8320 was very dear to me, and I happened to buy it before a smartphone data plan was required on that device. The phone unfortunately will not hold a charge (I've tried multiple batteries) and only turns on--without the radio signal, mind you--when plugged in.
I have been frequenting engadget for weeks and weeks doing research on which smartphone should be my next. Do you have any opinions on which Android device is the best that AT&T has to offer? I've discounted the Inspire, I don't really want it, and the Atrix 4G looks pricey and I've heard bad things about MotoBlur. So far I've been looking at the Captivate, Infuse, and the ever so mysterious SGS2.
Which AT&T device should I choose, or will the Galaxy S2 be out soon enough to warrant a wait?
PS. I'll only be getting a 200MB data plan, but I'm on WiFi 90% of the time.
I use the Nexus One and with Gingerbread on it it runs very nice.
Unfortunately I have to get a subsidized phone on contract, or else I would have already gotten a phone.
If you can live without custom roms (and even that may be possible soon), I would highly recommend the Atrix. You can put an alternative launcher from the market on it and not have to deal with motoblur at all.
I'm using mine on a 200mb/month plan as well, without issues. As long as you dont do something stupid like stream video/audio over your data plan, you should be fine if your around wifi a lot.
So if I get an Atrix for $150 from Amazon that would probably be a more worthwhile investment than a Captivate or an Infuse? Also, would it be wise to wait until the 24th to see if the SGS2 is announced, or does the vast majority believe it'll be a Galaxy Tab announcement/something else?
I would second waiting till may 24th....
There is something even more juicy

Wow, that's one monster of a phone. Sense isn't my favorite, and the 4.5 inch screen is a bit too big (see: Infuse), but it looks really promising. I wish AT&T would cool it with the borderline tablet sized displays. 4-4.3 is a better size, imo.
I have a dell streak ( 5 inch screen ) and absolutely love the screen estate.
I am trying to move to another phone becoz the development is kind of stagnant but just cant find anything that would give me the same screen as streak.
5 inch screen does look big but with a few days of use , u wont want to leave it .
So i guess my next phone would be htc holiday but really wish many developers going for it .
Don't listen to drgopoos... Dell streak is WAY behind. It was late when it came out and it's a dinosaur now. Wait till the 24th to see if the SGSII is coming to AT&T. If it doesn't get the Atrix. Yeah, motoblur is not the best thing ever, but the hardware is worth it. Plus Motorola wants to open the bootloader for custom roms, and AT&T seems like they would give them the Go-Ahead to do so given their new "we love android" status.

I am trying to not listen to myself
That is why i am looking for something new
I'd agree, wait. Once the SGS II is on the market, read some reviews of it and if you can check one out in person (and the other phones mentioned as well for comparison purposes). Then make a decision.
Nexus S
Once I got over the subsidy "free free" thing and went with an unlocked Nexus S on ATT, things just "worked".
Took only a few seconds to pull the SIM from my old phone and shove it into the new. The i9020A instantly signed into the ATT network, also locked on to the 3G data just fine.
It's the size and shape of a regular phone, fits my hand, fits my pocket.
Sparse is a word I would use for the apps installed.. but thats a good thing.. the only apps on it now are the apps I want on it.. its clean.
I know its a dev phone, but "really" do all the other phones "add" anything to the reference? Most seem to remove, block, break, reduce and charge you extra for everything.. that's not what I'd call a bargain.
And I've yet to see a "full featured" phone app from one of the big three I actually wanted to "pay for" with the 2 year contract.
The Samsung event on 5/24/11 has been postponed..... An Atrix is slowly looking like my new phone. I may wait a week or so before I set a decision in stone though.
Anyone have anything to say about the Atrix before I buy one, root it, and pop GingerBlur on it? It's either that or wait for the white AT&T Nexus S if it is coming out any time soon. Seems like it would be the perfect time.
who believes that the triumph was worth every penny?
i spent $300 on mine how much was yours?
where did you buy it? i got mine at radioshack
whats your favorite live wallpaper for it?
who plans on developing for this phone?
yes i know this thread was stupid but i had to get 10 posts! pleas if a mod comes over this id appreciate if you would delete it
did i ever mention i hate that 10 post thing!!!!!!!
I love mine.
Came from a Hero CDMA. Love the Triumph. It woos me with its large beautiful display and 1gHz processor...
I can say 100% that I love my Triumph. Does everything I want it too - and does it well. The best thing is having been able to give the middle finger to T-Mobile who's receptive tactics sucked me into coming back to them and then didn't live up to their end of the bargain... Good luck collecting the ETF - I'll be including the T-Mobile bill in my bankruptcy in January... Sit and spin, T-mobile!
So awesome and i dig mine. I need an Otterbox for it soon.

It's unbeatable for the 250 and 25 a month.
Got it cheap on ebay free phone charger too and old plan.
I've been pleased with it so far.

I love it. I'm testing one out because att is tugging me around by the short and curlies and I want to make sure the coverage was sufficient before I made the leap. The coverage isn't amazing, but after ocing to 1.9 the phone is fantastic and I was able to pick it up for $200.
Im still not sure about it......i dont know if i hate the service or the phone......if the phone was great i could deal with the service, if the service was good i could deal with the phone........might just be the beer talkng.....i dont know.
The new teamspeak 3 app is nice though....
Back to my beer......
it is my first smartphone and so far i love out. does everything i need and want it to do

I'm mostly loving it! It could stand a better battery and I'm aching for Gingerbread, but it's a quality phone and I'm very happy with it!
Love my Triumph! I've owned several PDAs and smarthphones before: Palm; Treo 300, 700 and Pre; Dell Axim; Blackberry Curve; Optimus V; and finally the Triumph. The Triumph is, by far, my favorite of all of these devices. I haven't had any of the issues that others have experienced. I'm finding that I need to log on to my laptop less and less now that I have the Triumph. To me, that's what a smartphone should be: a mobile replacement for the laptop for all but the most CPU-intensive tasks!
Other than the so-so battery life, I'm loving it!
the battery life is pretty much the only thing... So, I charge overnight, and then once I am in the office I plug it in as well. Getting a car charger too. Maybe I just play with it too much.
The other thing is, the headphone volume is weird. Even at level 1, it's too loud to put me to sleep. (I listen to radio in bed). For that I am getting a separate volume control thing...
Otherwise, just love it. Big screen, snappy processor, and the freedom of data everywhere without the big bill.
I really dig this phone even after 3 weeks of getting it. May get another one for sure!!
About a month ago I noticed a story about an HP 7" tablet with decent specs, but it's low resolution screen and poor build quality made it weak competitor. So, I just found out that Walmart will be selling a Tegra 3 tablet with similar specs to the Nexus 7 for $150. The kicker is that it has a microSD slot, rear-facing camera AND HDMI out.
http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/23/hisense-sero-7-lt-pro-tablets/#continued
I was waiting for news about the follow-up to the Nexus 7, but with nothing on the horizon I'm tempted to check out one of these tablets. The ability to hook the tablet to my TV for gaming with a Bluetooth controller outweighs the fast Android updates. Especially it if manages to get some developer support.
For $99 I might have to check one out.

Just recently heard about this and I am extremely intrigued by this tablet (Hisense Sero Pro is the one for $150).. I was considering riding it out for a new Nexus 7, have been tablet-less for a bit now, but it was not a huge priority for me as it seems that chance has slowed down. Seeing this tablet and the specs, for such a great price, seems too good to be true in a way. I am hoping some people are going to get their hands on it over the next few days and hear some reviews. That price tag and those specs are tempting me
Few custom ROMs and unknown update frequency.

I too feel the temptation, however imagine how you would feel if everyone upgraded to the new Nexus 7 with a full HD screen and you were stuck with a $150 device that was on par with the N7 minus the giant user base. I think those looking to upgrade should hold on for now.
Sd card
Being able to use a TV doesn't do anything for me but having the card reader built in..
This is something Nexus will likely never have.
I think the 7 inch size is just about perfect.
Now if I just had a reason to go to Wal Mart...
If I did & could check out one of these out.. there could go next week's lunch money.
Although... the name "Hisense Sero Pro" doesn't sound nearly as awesome as the infamous Ainol Fire.
I just picked up the Pro for $150 beans but haven't opened it up yet. Wally gives you 15 days to return, so I'm gonna' see if the tab gets any XDA love. If it does, I'll still keep my N7 but give my Gtab 2 to my wife replacing an aging Nook Color.
I'm hoping that its similarity to N7 specs makes it easy to root and build roms. I don't even know if the bootloader is locked or not??? Hopefully, some people will start to buy it and we see some development feedback over the next few days.
Looks like a pretty solid tab for the bucks and even if the current N7 comes down to about $150, if the Hisense gets any decent dev support, it will still be a good deal with the extra features that aren't available on the N7.
EDIT: In another thread, someone suggested giving motochopper a try for root. It looks like motochopper for the N7 doesn't unlock the bootloader, so you don't lose your data. But, who knows if it will work for the Hisense, maybe I'll give it a try if no other solutions materialize over the next few days. Stuff like this travels fast on the internet, so I'm optimistic.

Looks like a very good tablet for the price, has good features would definitely pick one up if I get a chance. It would make a very good present for my girlfriend as she always wanted something like a nexus 7

I am having no luck thus far finding a place locally that I could buy it.. It seems the Wally site is not even showing an option to buy it online, though it is listed on the site. If you get the chance to open it up soon and try it out, PLEASE share your thoughts with us if you are able to.

As mentioned, I'm probably gonna' hold off on opening it for at least a few days. It looks like for the time being, Wally only has it available in-store. Maybe, they're waiting for more allocation from Hisense before they make it avail online. I guess I'm fortunate that I have 2 fairly large Walmart stores within a few miles of each other. Hopefully, you'll find one soon.
If you haven't already seen this, here's another XDA thread you can follow. I'm sure over the next few days, we'll see more people buying them, therefore, more info and hopefully...ROOT! :good:

Local Walmarts have them. BUT. They keep them "in the back" for some reason and had none on display. Be persistent and it might help to take along a model number and UPC. Crazy good deal so far.

As I mentioned in a previous post, my local Walmart had them in display cases with other tabs. I guess as usual, YMMV.

Nothing but the Nexus brand for me for as long as I'm with Android. Never used the HDMI on my Iconia and I only used the back camera like 5 times in 2 years. Though I think I'd get this to replace my mother's aging Nook Color. No need to spend extra money on shipping for something that she wouldn't notice.
As someone mentioned earlier - having the SD card is something that a Nexus device is extremely unlikely to ever have, so if there's at least root, I'm probably in for this one.
I'm testing an AT&T Galaxy S 4 right now (coming from my Nexus 4....) and it's a work device, so I can't root. I've actually been impressed with things I'm able to do nowadays without needing root. The only things I'm hating is the notification drawer garbage and ability to use custom lockscreen shortcuts like I have on CM10.1. Other than that, I've been able to do everything I need to get it to look pretty much like my Nexus 4 does. Oh, and being unable to remove the AT&T and Samsung crapware are a pain, too.
I bit the bullet and picked one (the PRO) up today sight unseen.
Holy Crap.
It's a SOLID build, feels good, LOOKS GOOD. Pretty much Pure Google. It does have a Sams and Walmart app on it (which can be EASILY uninstalled). stuck in a 64gb card and.. wow. Oh, incase you wonder, the extra button on the screen... screen shot button.
This is a winner. Just need to find a case for it (It's a TINY bit wider and longer than the N7)
Box UPC
In case anyone else is having trouble with their local walmart looking this up, the actual UPC on the box is: 854098003418
The "Walmart Product Code" (551515189) from Walmart.com came up in their scanner at my local store, sort of, but didn't actually tell if they had any inventory or not. The clerk was nice enough to unlock and check the cases without me needing to ask. They had 4 BTW, 3 now, in Coralville, IA.
This one was in the case, right next to the Nexus 7's and 10's (irony thy name is WalMart) about 15 of the LT and 8 or 9 PRO. Now anyone know of a case that will fit?
Additional irony, stack of Nexus 7 chargers (hi power ones, with usb cable) clearance out at $10.
Just checked it and YouTube it. Looks very nice and all. Nice specs and price (Pro one). I would buy the Pro one if I didn't already have my Nexus 7. With that HDMI, I'll be killing hard in DeadZone on my big led tv. Ty and bookmarked.
Anyone know if this will be sold in Canada? I don't think they are selling it here, at least not yet.

As an example of my personal opinion of the OPO, somebody offered me a trade for their NIB Galaxy S5 (G900W8) and I didn't take it. It's a beautiful, inexpensive, functional, unlocked piece of well made hardware. You don't get the SAMOLED from Samsung or HTC speakers but then you also don't suffer from Knox or locked bootloaders or voided warranty from rooting your phone.
If you don't like it then sell it on. Everybody should get one.
I always wonder how people get their invites, how did you get yours?:cyclops:
Yes, buy it. I did and I don't regret it. It's easily unlocked, runs CM out of the box which is awesome, nice size (I have large hands though so take that as it is) and the one thing that surprised me is that it has good cell reception, it blows my nexus 5 out of the water and keeps pace with and even surpasses my moto x in signal in some areas.
So yes, buy it, you won't be disappointed.
Same question here
I just got an invite myself and I'm asking myself the same question.
I've been interested in trying a phone in the phablet category, I think that's mostly what has my attention, the screen size.
I currently have a N5, and I get a reliable 4 hours SOT and 24 hours standby with it on 4.4 and I love the optical image stabilization.
I think that's what I'd miss the most about my N5, I have somewhat shaky hands.
From what I've heard and read and my experience with cyanogenmod battery life, I don't think that there's going as huge of a difference in battery life and I really don't need more than my N5 gives me.
Also, I was kind of holding out for new phones that will support T-mobile band 12 for LTE.
Still that large beautiful screen calls out to me, lol.
If I can't decide by the end of the day, I may just buy it to give myself some more time to think about it.
I can sell it, if I decide against it.

To be honest I don't know how I got mine either. I was part of their forum just prior to announcement and have been entering every time I did see a change to try to win an invite.
But thanks everyone for your feedback I decided to buy, it's just too good to pass up.

Cool, Congrads. If you happen to have an extra invite sitting around, I don't mind taking it. ;p
ordered One
my friend got an invite this morning, his OPO profile account number was in 17xxx. He wasn't going to use it anyways so i grabbed it. Should see how many days it will take to ship.
I got my invite today at work & I spent the rest of the day asking myself the same thing. I got home & just ordered it; I didn't want to second guess myself anymore. I figured I could always sell it if I didn't like it. I'm on an LG G2 & was thinking about going to the G3, but this is almost half the price.
I also got an invite today, besdies the unattractive shipping, duties, and taxes in canada that rack up to about 100$ more, it's a beautiful looking devices and from a kickstarting company, why not have the first phone they make
I just got back from exchanging my Blackberry Priv for a V10, I had picked up the Priv because I was very interested in the physical keyboard (getting nostalgic about the G1 days I guess) After just under a week I could not stand the phone anymore. There were quirks with it that weren't too bad, but the keyboard was not that great, and not faster than using swiftkey by a long shot. The real deal breaker was no root access, I got the phone knowing it would probably never be cracked, and I thought I could live with that. After dealing with insane ads, not being able to tweak settings I realized I have to have root/custom roms (I was coming from a Nexus 6 btw)
I had been interested in the v10 since it launched, being impressed with my Wife's G4 I knew LG was making good phones (The Nexus 4 was my all time favorite phone). I went in on my lunch to the store, ate the $50 restocking fee and left with a V10 and couldn't be happier. I cant wait to get home root it and get it really set up, but so far playing with it at work it is impressive, and much nicer than the Blackberry, and I am digging the second screen so far.
I came from a Nexus 6, too. There isn't too much going on at the moment in terms of ROMs, but really LG did a great job in the software department. All you really need is a debloated ROM and you're set.
How did you like the camera quality on the Nexus 6? Mine was hit or miss (mostly miss).

In the past 6 months I've gone from a note 3 (broke it), to a G4(liked it, but too small for my taste now), to the nexus 6(loved it with the exception of the power and volume key placement) I found the keys too touchy, and I would accidentally shut it off mid-call upon occasion. So as soon as I saw all the info on the V10, I knew it was the phone for me... I loved my note 3, and would still be using it had I not crushed it with a trailer full of decorative landscape boulders... But Sammy lost me when they took away removable battery, and even more so the expandable storage... (another reason I jumped from n6) Plus the 200gb card made it a done deal...
Common sense isn't all that common
You scared me man. I was thinking to try Blackberry Priv since i was blackberry user before. I am confused now lol
I was a BlackBerry user previously as well and thought about the Priv for a second mainly for the keyboard, but the lack of root pretty much put the gun to my head. Sure root may come out for it one day, but I'm sure the cat will be a long time for the mouse again when an update comes out. Root access can't be beat in my eyes if you're after the ultimate customization of your device...

Oh man...we share the same pain. I left my N6 (which I miss dearly and was one of the best phone I have ever owned) for the Priv. Had it for a week. Couldn't live without root. Also there was a ridiculous amount of rapid battery drain even after disabling an insane amount of apps and the phone overheated rather quickly. I called TMO and made a complaint about it and they acknowledged that the overheating was a known issue. So I had them make a note in my account asking that the store waive the restock fee...well I walked into the store the following day told them what was going on and they already knew to waive the fee without even looking into my account. They knew of the issue as well.
I love this V10 tho. My wife is jealous of it. She wanted it for Christmas but I bought her the stylo instead.
I too have come from the Nexus 6 which I really loved as well as jumped ship from ATT and came over to the "uncarrier". So far I'm really liking the v10 Along with the service I'm receiving from Tmo. All we need is MM to drop and the battery will be tons better.
