Verizon Development Cadre - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

There are many smart folks out there creating stuff for our phone, ROMs, Themes, Kernals, etc, all deserving of some cha-ching. I can think of 4 or 5 people I would like to support. However, I can't afford to properly give to them all. ,
What if there was a pool of money that us thankful receivers put into. Then, the developers themselves could decide how that money is distributed, sort of like a dividend from profits. But it would have to be phone/carrier specific. I don't want my funds going to AT&T phone guys....but the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 Development Consortium could decide that for themselves.
VSGS3DC....what you think?

I think this isn't development lol. And doesn't sound like a good idea. I say just donate to each developer u think helped out, even if it's a dollar or two, it will help them all.

Not development and a good way to ruin a good thing, really if you want to make anything complicated attach sex or money to it and watch the drama unfold.

Can anyone think of even a worse idea and then post it in the dev section? lol

Way too confusing. Now the devs have to figure out how much in donations they get? Your just giving more work to the Devs. And it's going to lead to arguments and just suck...

Moved die to this not being development

Well, he's just offering a service. I don't see why we should blame him. I'm the kind of hacker interested in tweaking my phone. I'm sure other people don't care.
In other field (cooking for example), I'm sure I'd be considered as a lazy bastard. I bet many people around here are in the exact same situation.
In economics, we call that preferences and we take those as data, we don't judge them. Let them be free.

The problem is he is making money off of work that is not his. This right here is the main reason developers are starting to keep things to themselfs and select freinds and not releasing it to the public.

This is pretty much the same as people paying to get their PSPs, DSes, PS3s, Xboxes or anything else, hacked/modified. He's not selling the mods and roms, he's just selling his service. I feel that it's okay.
This reminds me of people who sell instructions with rooting tools or xbox, wii, psp mod files that they have found online for free but this guy isn't actually selling the free software he made sure he mentioned you are buying his services which would be rooting and hooking up the phones for lazy asses who don't want to take the few extra minutes to google the stuff they need (which I think is half the fun; getting to know about my phone and seeing it do stuff that the manufacturer says can't be done...) but anyway it's their money if they want to pay for something that can be easily done I guess that's on them. BUT I would think better of the seller if these tools he is using were developed by him instead of using the tools that other developers had put alot of time and work into and the developers themselves give it away because that's what they love to do and aren't getting a dime for all of the work they've done and then the help they freely give when answering our questions over and over for people like him to turn around and profit off of their hard work that they aren't even profiting off of. It makes me so grateful that most people are not like this seller. He really is profiting off of other people's hard work that he got for free which is totally greedy and all of that kind of stuff.
Thank you to all of our devs who put alot of time into helping us make our phones beyond awsome!
I was thinking of sending him a message and ask him which rom and tools does he use or if would he use or a screenshot for a specific phone just to be nosy.

Yeah well it doesn't fly here. You use the work of others and charge for it and things happen. One should never steal a hackers work lol
And a great example of why some of the greatest mods are no longer posted publicly and only shared privately between trusted developers.
As far as I know, developers usually allow such uses. I'm sure they are well aware of the possibilties offered by their licences. I personnaly use a BSD licence for most of my programs and encourage those behaviors.

No I don't personally. There is a big difference. They are not using someone else hardworking that is given away for free. There are rules you agree to when you join the site. And that includes asking to use the work of others. And no developer will allow someone to make money off of a tool they give away for free
the ONLY way i could see what he is doing as ok is if he was donating a portion of the profits to the devs of the work he uses.

I know what it means. Been doing this for many years. You should learn what respect is. That is what developers deserve and it is not given when you steal their free software to charge for.
In the end this has been covered many times. If someone is charging for the work of others then report them and they will be banned from here. As for other sites just report them as these devices are released with free licences charging for them is illegal.

Ideas for old phone?

I just upgraded to a One X on AT&T from a captivate. Now I have said captivate... and no particular purpose for it. I plan to flash every ROM available for it just for fun, but I don't know if there are any good applications that would give me a reason to keep it, or if I should try to sell it.
Anyone know what a phone like that would go for at this point (2 years after release)?
Captivate? Brother to the Galaxy S i9000?
Perhaps 150 quid, that's how much i paid for my SGS a few months a go when i bought it second hand, and it was cheap to get it for 150.
But if you're interested in testing roms from captivate devs, you'd earn some serious kudos for it. Doesn't hurt to have allies, especially devs
Testing ROMs wouldn't be a bad idea. Although, I cant test call quality anymore.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Personally I would donate it to some charity, the phone is near its eol and developers will be moving off to new phones but to make sure ask around in the phone's forum to see if any dev will like to have it, its always good when they can test on another device...
Donate to charity, donate to family, donate to developers, keep it as a back-up, or just tinker with it to learn about how phones work.

[Q] Reward?

I am willing to give a reward of a bonafide Windows 8 Pro x86/x64 retail license to the person who successfully solves the problem of getting the G2X Qualcomm mdm6600 radio/modem fully working with the CM10.1 or stock LG ICS kernel or the kernel that is being worked on by AdamPK, Mazout360, etc. If I determine that more than one person has made a significant contribution to achieving that, I will give the same reward to them too. But, before I make that official, I want opinions about doing that.
Edit:
The code required to achieve success must be fully documented and publicly available to enable others to use it successfully too.
UPDATE
The poll ended overwhelmingly in favour of me rewarding development which gets the Qualcomm mdm6600 modem/radio working fully with an ICS/CM9/JB/CM10.1 ROM and Kernel.
There's no expectation or obligation of anyone to accept the reward of a bonafide Windows 8 Pro x86/x64 license for accomplishing the development goal.
The reward will be awarded after the goal is accomplished which is proven by the full/complete operation of the G2X and its Qualcomm mdm6600 radio/modem with an ICS/CM9/JB/CM10.1 ROM and Kernel and the submission, to me, of documentation of the method used, in the form of fully commented source code which can be understood by a person competent in the programming language used so that it can be used for verification and for further development.
If there is a dispute as to who ultimately accomplished the goal of getting the Qualcomm mdm6600 modem/radio working fully with an ICS/CM9/JB/CM10.1 ROM and Kernel, it will be resolved by examination of relevant documentation which I will use to determine the reward recipient(s). If more than one person, determined by me exclusively, contributed substantially to achieving the goal, each of those persons will be eligible to receive the same reward. If anyone who is eligible to receive the reward doesn't want it they may forego receiving it.

I suppose that, if the developer is already doing it, but they don't have a G2X such as tonyp, they would welcome getting one to enable them to do their development much more easily. I think tonyp well deserves getting a G2X for his effort. I don't know about anyone else who doesn't have a G2X who is contributing as much as he has and still is. Wouldn't it be helpful to ask him and, if he wants one, easiest to donate to him directly so that he can buy the phone? I am certain that, if that happened, he would be very pleased.
Unfortunately you can't count me in. I'm lacking the time and probably kernel knowledge to do that.
You need someone who got deep Linux kernel experience and skills.
Btw, offering someone like that a windows license is a little strange
(and just to brag about it: I got plenty of free win 8 licenses thanks to Microsoft MSDN aa ).
A potential dev has to have the phone. It won't work without one, that would take way more time.
The problem with donating a phone upfront is that it introduces expectations. If the dev fails it's always a bad feeling for both sides, that's why there are many devs who don't really like receiving phones.

Offering a Windows 8 license isn't that strange even in the Android/Linux community as many use Windows for some purposes that Android/Linux don't fulfil. The reward wouldn't be given until it was "earned". (And, also, but not to brag about it, I was also a member of MSDNAA but I've retired from that now.)
Kernel development/hacking is very difficult so anyone who would do it would have to have the phone anyway so getting the phone one already owns isn't an incentive. You're correct about giving a phone upfront implies that there is the expectation of a beneficial payback to whomever donates the phone which is a good reason not to give one and not to want one.
I am still committed to the reward I am considering offering. So far, the majority are in favour of it. When the poll is over, I will do what the majority wants.
We'd probably need some dev who already works for LG or some other company to get the radio working.. or as stated before, some who understands android coding extremely well such.

Samsung, AT&T and Verizon winning root battle.

I think this is their master plan. Their making it so hard to root that at&t and samsung are just making us get worn out waiting for root. Eventually people won't care anymore and just put up with all their bloat and tactics turning us into sheep like the apple people are. I am even getting wore out checking 7 times a day in these threads only to hear of all the ways that don't work to root. There is a 12K bounty to be paid. U think that someone would spend every second trying to root to get 12K. Something is up with this. Maybe they were contacted and paid more not to do this. If there is a way they can PM me it and I will post it and give them the bounty so they don't get in trouble.

You make it seem like a 12k bounty is a ton of money for someone who has to put in hundreds of hours of effort to look for an exploit. You have to realize the people capable of doing this probably isn't sitting at home without other sources of income most likely exceeding the dollar per hour gain from the bounty searching for an exploit.
I get that you are just venting but this doesn't contribute much. Yeah, it is their plan. Once rooting was deemed legal by the FCC they knew they would have to make it much harder to achieve root. The phone has been out for what a month? Most of the devs on here have families and jobs. This is what they do in their spare time. If this phone can't be rooted I won't buy it and I'd advise anyone else to do the same. If enthusiastic users like all of us don't buy unrootable devices maybe it will send a message. Probably not, but maybe.

Ok....if they dedicate 1 month..it's 12k.. the ratio to a year would be 144k...if you make that then great but 80% of America doesnt. I get your point they have other careers and family..I'm just saying..most every other phone has been rooted. All other variety of the S5 even before they got released except Verizon and att werent. I get your point. Just saying.

I think a bigger issue is everyone whining and complaining about this whole root problem and the devs who work on stuff like this are not really giving a rat's a$$ as much because they're not getting respect and being pressured too much by these whiners.
We all just need to wait patiently and respectfully. People ARE working on this, they just aren't giving updates because if they give the tiniest of updates, again, the whiners and other people are going to be then asking a million more questions about their new find.
Yeah, 12k is a lot, but as stated above, this is dev's hobbies, not their job, and with how rooting is becoming more difficult, a lot of them don't think it's worth the time, hassle and effort just to be treated like crap by the people on here who have done nothing but constantly ask for updates while not contributing. And besides, the bounty is just a verbal agreement. They'll be lucky that 75%+ will even fully pay out.

I get that, but the idea of this community is to contribute to the community. A lot of people come here simply to download free ROMs and Kernels. Devs work hard on this stuff and it wouldn't kill the community to give back. Especially if something like CM13 has the possibility of coming to our devices, which a lot of people would love to see. If we want a dev to develop for our device, they need to have our device. Simple as that.

This is a great attitude to have. You could also look at it this way: If the dev isn't able to complete the project you donated for, consider your donation payment for some of the other work the dev has more than likely already put out.

I am the one taking donations to buy the device for the developer. You do not know me, neither do most people on this board but it comes down to the fact that the developer needs the phone we want him to attempt to get CM, AOSP or any other version of android besides stock running on. He graciously agreed to attempt it but said he will not start a thread asking for donations, which I understand. I agreed to start it, if you are not comfortable with donating to purchase the device, you don't have to and I understand that as well.
I have been a good standing, registered member since 09, lurking for some time before that. I have compiled CM for several devices that I have owned and shared them on these boards, I have been a part of other donation/bounty drives understanding my donation, small as they may be equals strength in numbers and is a small risk I am willing to take because I belive people are generally good and have faith in the xda community. Obviously you do not share that thought and that's OK, but if you have ever used a mod, ROM, freely published apps here or anything of the like you should contribute something to that dev, if they do not take donations most have a link to a charity you can donate to. I am not saying you haven't, just saying in general that's how things work.
I understand that the possibility of me, or once I send the device to the developer, him just disappearing is a fear some may have but that's when you look at how long the person has been here, what they have contributed, have they been helpful etc and make your own decision. It's unrealistic for developers to acquire numerous, expensive devices, develop for them then freely make their work available, yet that's what happens at times, other times the community steps up.
Did not mean to start a big thing and sorry if you all took it the wrong way.. I was just concerned other all and I thank everyone for there comments. Duster thank you for all your hard work I am not doubting you at all I love the work you put in..

It's all good man. We may come off a little strong here on XDA because we; for lack of a better work, care about our devs because they do a lot of stuff without even demanding payment. That particular dev has a history here on XDA for bringing AOSP/CM based work onto previous Note devices so he is reputable. However I definitely understand your concerns as it does come up here in the community from time to time. I remember there were a few devs that let the money get to them and they ended up leaving because they took the money and ran. That was a few years ago though.
I wouldn't sweat it though. I do encourage you to donate at least $10. We are close to getting the funds needed to get the device for him so that work can begin. Though it's not a gaurantee that he will be able to get CM on the Note 5, progress has already been made getting it onto the Sprint version, so we are very hopeful that it'll happen for the other variants as well.
CM 13 will NEVER come to our Note 5. Don't get all your hopes up guys/girls. This guy is blowing smoke up our a$$es.. If it was able to be done, don't you think CM would be doing it for us?! The day I buy a stranger a phone, just to make my $600 purchase a better experience will NEVER happen. Sorry

CM doesn't develop for Exynos devices so no, I don't think they'd do it.
Also, you're not really buying him a phone, you're just chipping in (doesn't even have to be that much) to make your $600 purchase a better experience. Seems worth it to me. It's okay though, you're allowed to not chip in. It's totally your choice.
Too bad most of the devs here are really nice people. If I were a dev, and I managed to get CM working on the Note 5 because the community chipped in and got me one, I'd privately release it to only the people who donated. That's just me, though.

People are just overly salty for no reason these days. I think they are just trying to make everyone else a debbie downer like they are.
If it actually EVER gets released, feel free to tag me and say you told you so... Until then, I'll be laughing at the ones waiting.
And to the post above, overly salty?!.. No, I'm just being a realist and acknowledging that it will never be released for our device.
Want CM?!? Get a damn nexus!
