[Q] Difference between old German and new UK JB ROMs? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I have recently installed the UK(Nordic) JB 8000 ROM onto my 8010 Note. It seems to be working just fine, except obviously it has the extra 3G and phone icons etc.
My plan was to use this tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982821) to fix these extra gubbins, and so carry on running JB until samsung finally get around to releasing my proper firmware.
Problem is however, the fix only seems to work on the original German release (on mine, I lose my notification bar and background image, probably a couple other things.)
So the question:
Does anyone know what changes/bugfixes/optimisations the newer ROMS have over the original 1-month-old German release?
I'd assumed the original one was essentially a test run, and the new ones had various fixes, hence wanting to run the updated roms.
If anyone can let me know, it would be a big help I'm still working on getting the fix to work on the new UK ROM, but just in case I would like to know my options!
Thankyous

One thing I noticed in a different thread, is that airplay and the Peel IR remote didnt work in the old German version.. I didnt realise there were even that many issues with it, I expected minor stuff only.
Edit: Damn, this was meant to be an edit, not a new post. Must learn not to post when I'm hungry.

Actually I'm running the German version on my N8013 and Peel works fine. Don't know about airplay since I've never used it. Heck, I don't even know what it is.

I dont use AirPlay either, it was just an example that the old ROM had various issues and bugs... or at least so I read.
Strange yours works, are you using the old german ROM? or the new one? I think it got a bugfixed version at the same time the UK/Nordic/etc ones got released

AT&T ROM update: Should I bother?

This question is more directed at the folks who have done the ROM update and can give a solid opinion about the performance after the update.
In the liner notes to the ROM, it says it improves TF3D performance, adds the HTC Radio app, this, that, and the other... Is it really worth it? My device works fine for me the way it is, but if there really is a noticeable performance improvement or better battery life, then I'll certainly go for it.
Speaking of, where can I find the stock AT&T Fuze ROM?
Well, I did ... but I only kept the original ROM for about a half-day, so I really can't speak TOO MUCH from performance improvements. I just wanted to have the latest official ROM for a while before I start either trying others or building one myself.
As for WHERE? Try here [ http://www.htc.com/us/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=198&act=sd&cat=all ]. That's where I got my updated version.
HTH,

That's where you can download the updated ROM. I was asking about where I can download the ORIGINAL ROM. I've already downloaded the update and am hesitant to install it unless it is really worth it... I don't mind flashing my old device, but this is a brand new phone and I don't want to get flash-happy on it so soon. Next thing I know, I'll be in a back alley somewhere, trying to install another WM6.5 ROM just to get a fix.
I used the original rom till the update became available and Ifelt it was much better. Albeit I do get more errors for some reason (usually net caller ID, but that's normal). The radio works like a charm and the performance did feel like it got better.
The upgrade is a 90% good choice imo.

Ahhh, sorry about the confusion. As I see it, you have two choices ... you can dump the ROM you currently have, and rebuild it as a flashable ROM, or you can look at this Wiki Page, and see if yours is already listed. My original ROM (1.95.502.5) is listed, and it has a DL link (although I haven't tried it.)

I know what you mean . I have just moved here from my old Hermes, so sad it gave up its ghost with a broken digitizer. I miss the scroll wheel SO MUCH, although the Raph IS growing on me. I had flashed that old device so many times while I was learning the basics of cooking. And once I got that done, I was thrilled with it for several years. I am not so keen to begin the cycle again, myself, although I DO feel it coming. But flashing a stock ROM isn't quite the same, and it doesn't come close to voiding any warranties. I would highly recommend you take the plunge, just to stay current, if nothing else.
And when the time comes, starting with a basic shipped ROM will be the way I go, anyway, as I begin cooking up something new for myself.
Anyway, I hope this helps. Good luck, whatever you decide.

MyTouch Fender/1.2 ROMs (3.5mm jack)

Alright so it's been a couple of weeks and anyone can see that the Nexus is casting a shadow over the new MyTouch so it's probably not going to get much attention from Cyanogen. We can still use his roms however we lose touchscreen support. Actually, we can use pretty much any rom as the old MT3G and G1 can use but we can't use the touchscreen.
What I've tried was pulling the /system/usr directory, flashing a CM rom and pushing the directory back but it still didn't make any difference.
I've tried flashing the Cyanogen ROM then flash the boot.img from the Fender ROM but I forgot that the current SPL (1.33.0013) is locked. Another obstacle. So I replaced the boot.img in the CM rom with the Fender and of course it didn't work. I'm out of ideas... but I'm far from being a dev. But there are a lot of you smart guys out there. Has anyone broken any ground on these devices? Now that the original MyTouch is obsolete it's only a matter of time that the popularity of this device will grow since the MyTouch (original) is more popular that the G1 to date.
In conclusion I see two options from here:
We cook a custom MT3G 1.2 ROM from source (whereever that could be found).
We work together to discover a workaround for this touchscreen issue to allow us to use CM ROMs (perferred).
So far the only ROM for the new MT3G 1.2/Fender is an odexed stock rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=623141 (thanks CursorDroid) and the only method of rooting is by goldcard methoddiscovered by Crypysmoker.
If there are any others can you please post them.
I would really like to see the development for this device take off and I'm sure that it will eventually. Themes, kernal mods, custom roms, tethering, overclocking, a2sd, etc and I'm sure that I'm not alone.
Thanks.
I would love to see this phone get some attention. I call it my poor mans nexus
Has anyone tried adb pulling the touchscreen kernel module from stock and inserting it into a modded ROM to see if it even loads?
/system/lib/modules only has wlan.ko
It looks like the driver might be tied to the kernel so a new kernel is needed

LMAO!! Even though I don't have one and don't intend to get one cause I'm satisfied with my original MyTouch, ROM development is always encouraged. the more ROMs, the better!

Unfortunately, the more ROMs the more confusion.
Now that we have two different MyTouch verions (not including the 32a/32b for the original) this is going to get VERY confusing. It already is. Even if you use "1.2" people are going to wonder if that's the ROM version or the phone version. Maybe MT3G2 or something.

And thus we need a dev. LOL. Unless someone can tell us what controls the touchscreen input. That might give us a step in the right direction.
I'm still hoping for Cyanogen ROMs on the Mytouch 1.2.
Lol since im the one who even discovered the pain staking rooting process ... omg such a pain... I felt the need to comment.
I just today started using my fender over my G1 because Criffmon (however the hell you spell it) came out with the themed stock rom. It looks perfect.
But the reason for no rom yet is the kernel tied into the new touchscreen drivers and 3.5mm jack. There is a whole new touchscreen which is why it doesnt work when u load other roms.

Yeah that's the rom that I used too... maybe i got my links confused.
That rom is odexed. I managed to de-odex the apps but I can't figure out the framework. I would like to add things like the modified browsers, dialer, contacts, mms app, etc. But I am unsure if it can be done because of the odex.

wow that looks sweet!!!...
So according to tmonews the MyTouch 1.2 is sold out and anyone interested will have to wait until this Spring to pick theirs up.
Then I noticed an interesting tweet from Haykuro:
"just realized something. The Nexus One and the N900 are amazing phones and a whole bunch of people have it but you NEVER see anyone with it."
So let's get this straight... the newest MyTouch is sold out and all of the devs (like Cyanogen) are rushing to develop firmware for a device that isn't anywhere near as popular. Meanwhile... what has been accomplished with the new MyTouch?
What's wrong with this picture???
Has anyone made any progress at all lately?
there's loads of things wrong with that. but sadly when your a gifted developer you have the right to develop for whatever device you want, even if loads of people won't be using it.

I understand all that but my point is out of the hundred of thousands of devices sold there isn't ONE person out there that tried to develop a rom for it and share it? There are over two dozen people (at LEAST) in this forum that has the phone and not one of them possess the skills to at least figure out how to use a CM rom on the device? Really? Why is that so hard for me to believe?
I'm not saying that I can do better because I know that I can't... but I also don't have any coding experience either. It would appear that all the T-Mobile customers with coding experiences decided NOT to buy this device for some reason. Or they decided to buy it... but not try to improve on it in any way.
You know that if Haykuro or Cyanogen had the phone we'd be on the twelfth rom version by now. C'mon devs! I'm still using my G1 if I want to show off the power of Android. I want to retire this device already.

No no.. You have it a bit wrong. Wes and Ctso were/have been working on it trying to get the kernel into Open eclair.
The main problem is those 3 drivers we need for the touch screen and 3.5 jack seem to be a super pain in the ass to extract from the current kernel to push into another or build a new one all together. Basically, the drivers can be seen, but not used.
ALL 32a roms will boot on the fender/mytouch 1.2, I have tried literally 10 pages of them.... Bu the moment it looks for a touch screen, all it sees is the track ball and defaults to it. YOu can fully run other roms, but you cant touch. They are trying lol, But were basicly gona have to deal with criffmon's themes for now since 2.1 will be on us in the next few weeks. Supposedly, we are getting the full 2.1 since these are 32a boards.
People are trying, But think of this as a first, NEW release in a long while.
I mean hell, it took me 3 days just to figure out how to root it, when the nexus 1 took maybe a few hours with ways already known.
It will come, be patient. The moment I get a working kernel I will let everyone know.
Hey Crypysmoker!!! Thanks for all the hard work on this!
It's good to know there are people working on this device.

Any Mandarain/Chinese custom WM 6.5 rom available??

Hi all, I haven't been up to date and keeping up with the scene lately (I'm now using a newer phone, Nokia N900). So ya i haven't been using my Touch Pro all that much..........so forgive me for asking some stupid or noob questions
U see, my mom needs a phone just like the Touch Pro with the slide out keyboard that can type/txt in mandarin. And since my Touch Pro was purchased in Taiwan, the keyboard naturally has the mandarin characters on it, and since i'm not using it anymore i thought i'd give it to her.
But I remembered using the phone for the very first time, the stock rom was slow and crap. That's y I installed EnergyRom on it, and since i prefer english then it doesn't affect me. BUT as for my mom, her english sucks balls, so now i'm left with 2 options, either restore it back to the stock Taiwanese rom, or try to find a custom rom with chinese support......
I would prefer the 2nd option, because the sole reason y i found this forum and got into all these custom roms, is coz they're just so much better. I love EnergyRom for the speed and pure awesomeness, so would prefer if i can use a custom rom that has chinese support.
By chinese support, I mean using the keyboard to type chinese. I know there are programs like CEStar etc but those are slow and my mom wants to use the keyboard to txt instead of using the stylus or software keyboard.
So ya, does anyone know any chinese custom rom?? I already Googled for the past 20 mins and found none, i did find a few chinese forums but all their custom roms are just copied from here........
Lastly, what does "WWE" mean?? I saw a few topics with that in their title, but forgot what it means.
Update:
I'm about to download the stock rom coz i might decide to use it, but then i read something important in the middle of the page. It seems it'll change the radio version as well, is that possible??
Can someone please confirm this?? Coz i remembered the radio version of the stock rom sucked, that's why i changed it to a different one and is also one of the main reason y i installed a custom rom.
Also, i can't exactly remember the process of setting up your phone so that you can get it ready to install custom roms. All i can remember is something about the HardSPL?? So my question is, is it possible that if you install the stock rom, it'll restore the HardSPL back to the factory settings and everything else that was modified?? I.e, will i have to reinstall all that crap again?? Or is ROM the only thing that will be changed?? I'm just kinda unsure about this since the radio version might be changed, and i'm not sure if i can change it back to the one I want after installing the stock rom........
Here's the page if anyone can read chinese/taiwanese:
http://www.htc.com/tw/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=140&cat=2&dl_id=527
BTW, i did find a lot of custom chinese roms, and one of them is even THE SAME as EnergyRom, which is the June 19th 2010 build, it looks EXACTLY the same except that it's in chinese......most of the roms are very up to date, mostly updated to June 2010, and I actually just installed one of them and it's got chinese fonts alright, the output works fine and all but the hardware keyboard output doesn't work, it's still in english and doesn't output the corresponding chinese character that you type on the keyboard. So ya i'm still looking for solutions if anyone's got any.
Edit:
I found this thread and it has the language pack for Taiwanese (but the link is dead). I'm not sure how to use it though............can someone plz help?

New owner - Couple questions

Ok, you may have seen me asking questions about the Note in the last couple days.. and today I ventured out and actually bought one
A grey 16gb wi-fi model.
So now, I have a couple of questions I wanted to ask before I started installing lots of apps onto this thing!
First off, I have been looking into the JB stuff, which is one of the main reasons I wanted the Note. It seems that this is not out in the UK yet (or anywhere except Germany?) but there are ways to root the Note and install it...
Except it seems these (and every other ROM) are all designed for only the 8000 model? Which *I believe* is the wifi+3G model...
1 - So does this mean I cant use many custom roms? As they seem to be designed for the 8000? or is this irrelevent?
(I did find this thread about it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982821 except it seems that the JB install makes the battery drain around 3 hours quicker than it should? OR is this standard for jellybean? (seems strange)
2 - Alternatively, is it recommended just to wait for the official JB release. Seems its expected any day now, though who knows when that would be in reality.
3 - Something I was curious about... has any of the custom roms managed to keep the samsung ability to have multiview/dualview etc? Or do they just revert you to a customised version of standard Android?
4 - Anything that its recommended I do first, or install first, before I get going? Full battery charge would seem an idea, though I think I need to drain the battery first... Been a long time since my iPad was new, cant remember the right ways to do things anymore.

1) There are usually tweaks that allow you to use the ROM, even if your device isn't the 8000. Keep in mind that those roms have telephony services, and will be looking for a 3G signal (unless disabled).
2) If you are staying stock I recommend waiting. If not, flash CM10. It's lovely!
3) It depends on if it is stock based or AOSP/CM based. Stock based roms retain all of the original functionality, but adds speed, animation, theme, and other misc tweaks. AOSP based roms lose all of the Samsung Touchwiz specific functionality (Multi-window, S apps), but give you a pure android experience and look. Of course, CM also has a cool theme chooser!
4) I believe you should charge it first, but others will correct me if I am mistaken
Enjoy your awesome new Note!

1) Its nice that I have the options to play with it then, I'm sure there are ways to disable the 3G search. I was tempted to get it, but it didnt seem worth the extra £100+ (I got my note on an offer)
2) I assume I can flash CM10 while I wait, and return to stock when it is released? I'm only used to iOS jailbreaking, where you can always return to stock easily... I'd assumed this would work in a similar way?
3) It would be a shame to lose out on the samsung stuff... I'm not hooked on touchWiz or anything, but the multi-window stuff in the new JB update looked pretty snazzy. Of course in a years time I may change to pure android roms, if only to keep updated (I expect samsung will stop making their own updates soon enough)
4) I plugged it in briefly, saw it already had half a charge, and so unplugged it ... I cant remember if I should charge it to full first, then discharge it to 0%... or run it flat then charge it to full. Or if it makes no difference at all. Curse you technology!!
edit:
5) Any recommended apps? I assume I can chuck on AVG or similar, is there anything specific I should use for backups etc?
All Android devices seem to have a real problem if you truly run the battery down to 0. I would say, get it close, but not to the point of dying.
As far as the German JB ROM, there's a patch to disable the phone stuff. I'm running it on a WiFi only 8013 and it's fine. Just read everything you can. Read the threads from the first page to the last.
Frankly, I've always been a custom ROM kind of guy. But the multi-view stuff is just so awesome, especially the JB version, that I'm sticking with stock. Changed the launcher, but sticking with stock.

Thanks for this. As it is getting late already, and I have work tomorrow, I may just stick to the ICS for now and get a couple basic apps and have a play around. You never know, the update may turn up!
I would just go for the JB one tonight, but I will need to find a step-by-step guide to help me, as I only have experience with the iOS jailbreaking process.

It was better with ICS. But it's still pretty good. Last week I watched 4½ hours of video and still had about 52% battery life left. It seems like every version of Android they come out with gets slightly worse with regards to battery life. But in this case I think the extras that JB adds makes it a worthwhile tradeoff. In JB the difference seems to come from the addition of Google Now. I'm tempted to turn it off since I really don't use it other than to shut up iPhone users
After some research, it seems rooting is even more complicated than I first thought... because of the "binary counter" that samsung now has on their devices.
It seems that you can reset this counter, but I think it would only be sensible to road-test the tablet as stock first, in case it has any obvious faults that need to be sorted under warranty...
Although I do hate being sensible.
Same. I usually stay stock/un-rooted for about a month.. or two.. then I can't help it and just want to root and do other stuff. But for now, I have all that I really need for my Note at the moment without needing to root.

hahaha, I felt the same way. I actually bought mine about a week before the Nexus 10 official announcement. I wanted to wait to make a decision on whether to keep the Note or send it back and get the Nexus 10. I was going to wait to root until I heard the full details and made the decision.
I was rooted about 2 hours after I took it home
I hope your resolve lasts longer than mine did.
I rooted immediately, I have SG3 & 2, and I still have the galaxy 10.1 running a jb Rom. Guess I should of played with stock a little more, but really wanna see how the development is.

I'd be happy with stock (for a while at least), if the current stock was the jellybean update lol.
I will attempt to keep myself entertained with the differences between my old iPad1 and this fancy new tablet, and hope that distracts me until samsung release the UK JB.
Hope its soon!
Strange how Germany got it first... and as far as I know is the only place to get it? and that was 3 weeks ago now. Odd.
Apparently you got your wish... JB for UK dropped today, unfortunately for all you guys with wifi only, you seem to be the redheaded freckle faced kid in the shade that can't come out to play because its for the 3g model only again....
Personally, I'd root that sucker and try the new JB update.... You won't be disappointed....
Well I have a 3G model but I am from India so no update yet for me so kind of sucks

Yeh, I was initially tempted by the 3G model... But it would have been over £100 more expensive, plus a monthly subscription for data, and just isn't worth it.
Although its frustrating that Samsung will probably now wait another month before updating the wifi model... I don't think Germany even has it yet?
Couldn't you buy it outright? Then its up to you to either buy a plan, prepaid sim or use as a wifi model.... I personally prefer to get the 3g model simply because there may come a time when I need to use it.
I have a few 3g tablets, note 10.1, galaxy tab 7" and Acer Iconia A501.... Not all of these have sim cards but the potential is there if needed....

Well yes, but thats the point I was making... to buy it outright would have cost me an extra £100, and I simply dont have that much money to throw away.
If I was going to make a lot of use out of it, then fine... but I doubt I will. If I need internet on the move, I have my GalaxyS2,
Or, if for some reason I need internet on the move *specifically* on my tablet... I have my GalaxyS2 and tethering.
Saving myself over £100 means... well that £100 has bought me a really nice case, a 64GB microSD card, and a 4-in-1 adaptor for using USB/miniUSB/SD cards with the Note. And I still have £30 left over!
More than worth it, in my book. Just a shame we have t wait for the darned JB update so I can actually use the 64gb stick!

tab2lite vs expresso...help me choose

Hello. Rather new to rooting, although I have done it to my el-cheapo flytouch. Anyways, I got a GT2 7.0 (3113) this past weekend. I'm debating on rooting it and leaving stock, or possibly using a custom ROM.
I want to retain IR, and mic use for Skype. These 2 ROM's seem to be the only 2 that will keep both. I'd like to ask opinions from users who may have used both of these. And are there any real advantages to one over the other? Both still retain full camera and BT functionality, correct?
Thanks!
Ok so I got it rooted last night so I could install TiBu and freeze all the bloat. I tried Peel with my TV and it doesn't work with it, so I guess I don't care about IR now.
So now that I don't care about IR, whats a good, fast ROM that won't eat a ton of space? Retaining mic use and bluetooth is an absolute must though! Also, since I'm rather new to tabs, where can I see the difference between a phablet ui and tablet ui? Is this really a deal breaker for some?
Geez, guess I'll just continue to have a convo with myself since apparently nobody here has any opinions on the difference between these two or the benefits of either. C'mon folks, I know at least one person that's read this has used one of these roms.

Hey, I'm not saying this to insult you, but I almost didn't notice that there's a little piece of plastic on the IR when you buy it so just thought I'd mention it to make sure you don't still have that on.
Stupid mistakes do happen, like the Tab 2 7.0 I just picked up a few days ago came with a case made by Samsung that came in the same box as the Tab, but the case actually covers the IR. Why would they cover a feature?
Anyway, again, I'm not assuming you're stupid, just thought I'd throw it out there since Peel works great with my TV, BD and Onkyo receiver.

It's funny you mention bluetooth because I tried to use it just yesterday and it says it was on but it didn't connect.
As far as roms go that's truly your own picking. I have tried several myself. SungsonicHD, Tab2Lite RC3, just to name a few. Best bet is to go into the respected topic and see what features have been kept throughout.

Personally you can't go wrong with a cyanogenmod 10 or any version of cyanogenmod for that matter.
