Lifehacker had an article on this a few months ago. It was more detailed than this but the main idea I gathered from the article was to charge it to around 90% then let it discharge to about 40% then charge it back to 90ish. Also avoid charging it/unplugging it often. I deliver pizza so I suck at abiding by those rules Cuz I'm in and out of my car so much.
Ps. I leave my laptop on and plugged in all the time and after a year it won't hold a charge at all. So I'm thinking leaving it charging after its fully charged might be the worst thing to do. Hope I helped.

Please enjoy this awesome article.
Honestly, a big part of the reason I went for the Samsung Galaxy SIII is because I don't have to worry about babying the battery; a battery that will inevitably lose charge no matter what. If/when it gets old/abused enough to bother me, I can just get a new one if I'm still using the phone then. :good:

Poor Battery Life on NS?

I'm going to try to purchase my Nexus S before class tomorrow when they open. Don't want to take any chances on it selling out. Would it be wise to turn it on and use it a while during the morning? Or does the battery need to be fully charged before using it to condition it and ensure a good battery life? I've read many battery tips but i'm still a little confused on whats better for a new battery.

When you get it, deplete it, but do not let it die. Ever. Then just cycle it normally.

What do you mean by "die".... like to 0%, if so what should we take it down to?

Yes, by letting your battery "die", per se, you're letting it deplete to 0%. I'd say for safe measure, between 5%-9%. But if you're in the vicinity of a charger take it down to 2%. If not, turn it off at 5%, then plug it in before powering it back on. My devices' daily life lasts so long (on all devices I own) because I properly know how to cycle a battery.
If you let your battery die (0%), it'll lose more and more charge (on a 0.00% level) every time. When you get it tomorrow though, it should have ~50%-60% charge.

There's no need for that, only if it doesn't have any juice.

Battery life?
So how are your batteries doing? Mine is kind of crappy. What supposedly changed in 2.3? I see no difference in the reporting of apps in Battery Use and they took away Battery History in the hidden system settings. Where is the graph everyone talked about?
You gotta give it a few charging cycles for the battery to reach it's full potential. Give its few days, you'll notice it will get better after you charged it a few times.

The battery life on mine is chugging along pretty well. I gave it a full charge before hitting the streets. Its been 4 hours with wifi and GPS on with a couple dozen pictures taken and a bunch of apps dl and installed. used maps 5.0 and periodically hit the GPS for my position getting really good accuracy while driving and the battery level still has a little more than 4/5s battery life still remaining

You haven't broken it in yet, use your brain.
The phones barely been out that long, it takes a while to have good statistics about battery life.

That's funny because every company that sells back up batteries tell you to go through 4-5 full cycles before it reaches its potential. I guess you're right, and they're all wrong.
They are wrong. Google it

Battery
how do I train my battery it was halfway charged when i got it do I let it die and then put it on the charger thanks!
EDIT:WRONG SECTION DELETE THIS MODS!
I've always charged all the way up then ran the battery all the way down, then charged all the way up again. Then periodically, I will run the battery all the way down just to give it a little exercise. So far out of all the cell phones I have had I have had 1 battery go bad on me, that was 8-10years ago.
Battery
how do I train my battery it was halfway charged when i got it do I let it die and then put it on the charger thanks!
matter of opinion really.... I would kill it by playing with it.... then do a full charge
that is what I am doing
Generally the suggested method is to charge it for 8-12 hours as soon as you can, then use it until it gets very low, then charge for another 8-12 hours. Do this cycle about 3 to 4 times and you've got yourself a healthy battery.
Killing the battery entirely, despite popular belief, can have some negative effects on its health. Especially during is conditioning phase.

How often should I charge my Maxx HD?

With my old Thunderbolt I was required to charge it every night, if I wanted to use it the next day.
With the Maxx HD I do not have to charge as often.
So...before I should start doing something I may regret later, what are the do's and don'ts with this phone' battery? Should I wait to charge it? Is it ok to charge daily? Will charging daily affect battery life and longevity? These are the type of questions I'm hoping to find answers for.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Good question. I was told not wait to wait for a full discharge unless you think your phone is grossly misrepresenting your battery life percentage. Otherwise, you should charge it any time you want. Battery life depends on the age of the battery and the total number of charges you do.
From what I have heard, battery wears out due to the charge / discharge cycles as well as time. We can't do much about the charging cycles because we use our phones. We can do something about battery damage due to the passage of time.
The battery deteriorates the quickest when it is fully charged or fully discharged. Hence, if possible, you want to avoid these two extremes. So to minimize battery wear, you may want to keep it charged, say, between 80 and 30 percent. That is annoying, however.
I think a more practical suggestion is not too keep it always charged up near full capacity, while also charging it as quickly as possible when it drops below 15% or so. Basically don't let it sit at that discharged state for a long time if possible.

New polymer batteries don't like to be fully discharged. However the battery life expectancy shortens, each time you charge it. So imho, keep the balance and charge it once maybe max twice a day. Of course if it's needed you gotta do it more often. Just use common sense. Nothing lasts forever.

Twice a day? I had 65% left after 24hrs off the charger. Granted, that was some limited use on first day, but still. I'm wondering whether to charge it every night or every other night.
OK. Turn on skype. Have couple video calls, then watch some YouTubes, call somebody, use Google Maps and Navigation. You will not have much juice left, especially if you have only 1-2 signal bars.

For the longest time what I have done was charge until full and leave it on battery until it tells you to plug it in. No need to get all technical about it. The battery will last until ur next upgrade trust me. I have been doing it this way for years and not a single problem with my battery on any of my devices.

You obviously don't use your phone as much as some of us... I have Pandora running 10 hrs a day at work and in the car, then use it to make calls, texts, watch vids, and use FoxFi for internet at home to download programs, surf the 'net, etc on my home computer. I charge all day at work and overnight, pretty much every day.
How often one has to charge depends on how much use the phone gets. Sure, I could push a single charge to 2-3 days, but I'd rather USE the new toy I just bought

Battery issues anyone?

Had my baby for a little over a year and a half, been nothing but a great phone in that time. This is where the problem starts... I'll be using it like normal, texting and surfing, and will have 98% battery, the phone will shut down, and when it decides to start back up, I will have 14% battery or less.... But it will go up if I leave it alone..... I've tried wiping the battery stats, even charging with the phone off, nothing is working. I will attach screenshots so you can see what's up.

Your battery is bad. Same thing happened to me, I recommend just buying a new OEM battery from a reputable dealer on Amazon, that's what I did. Try setting it down on a table and push on one side and if it rocks back and forth its bad. Or you can just look at it and see its swollen
Mine did that and it was just a bad battery. If you take the battery out and place it on a flat surface you may notice that it rocks left and right. If it rocks a lot or if you feel the middle and it feels swollen it may be symptoms of a bad battery.

Same thing has been happening to me for the past two days. I just took out my battery and sure enough it is swollen. Thanks for input!
edit: Is it dangerous to keep using it like this for the next few days until the new battery comes in?

It is dangerous because battery acid can get on you and cause sever skin irritation. You can continue like this for 1 to 2 days MAX until you get your new battery. Try not to use it because using it more will cause it to swell more, DUH try to only use it for emergencies and then once you get the new battery clean the terminals and you'll be good to go
I used mine got a while like that because i didn't know it was the battery lol

I'm curious about charging habits of the people who have bad batteries. I have had my phone since the day it came out and my battery is still fine. I never let it get below 30% unless I'm testing a new ROM. Killing lithium ion batteries is really bad for them. So how many of you drain it all the way on a regular basis?
I'm still using my old vibrant battery (at times). I don't think that it's as strong as the spare that I purchased a few months ago, but, is on par with the 18 month old battery that came with the phone. I zap them all the way down a lot of the time (then swap to a fully charged one). I do(try) to recharge to full before use though.
Mine does it but only when I'm using wifi or data could that still be a bad battery

I run mine down to 1 percent on a daily basis. Never let it die though. I was under the impression that if you let it drain to zero you're asking for trouble. I could easily change my ways though.

Shallow discharge cycles are generally accepted to be better for Li-ion batteries than deep ones.

That is probably a bad idea. I would try to plug it in around 15-20% with 20% being the best time. According to the batteryuniversity website 20-80% is ideal for li-ion batteries because it keeps the heat down. Charging from less than 15% creates heat because that is a low level and takes a bit longer to charge from therefore exposes the battery to more heat. A good charger and battery will shut off the charger once it hits 100% and only allow for a trickle charge if the battery drops below 100%. But I have seen my phone get hotter from about 85% to 100% if Im using it ie: plugged in and streaming music or using navigation.

Safe to keep batteries in wallet, how fast do they drain?

I would like to know is it safe to store two batteries in my wallet in a ziplock bag. Are there any dangers that I should be aware of doing this? I think the ziplock bag might help if they start to leak. How quickly do fully charged batteries drain over time when your not using them. Lets say I kept them in my wallet for a day, few days, a week and I didn't use them. Will they still be fully charged? How fast do they lose their charge? Thanks.
bump. Can anyone please help me with this? Thank you.
They won't lose their charge in a week. Neither will they leak.
Leaving batteries fully charged but unused for long periods of time does cause degradation over time though. I read somewhere recently that if you were going to put a battery into storage for a few weeks/months you should drain it to 40% first.

Thanks for all your replies. So leaks are not a problem. How about exploding batteries?
sitting at 100% they will drain the fastest. sitting at 40% is what they recommend for long term storage. if you let it hit 0% by the way, the battery is ruined, so swap them out every once in awhile. even if you dont need it
exploding batteries normally just swell up they normally wont explode in your pocket.

My s3 battery ran down hard to 0pct last night and it seems fine now. I fell asleep with it in recovery mode, woke up to a dead phone that would not turn on even when plugged into a charger. It had to stay on a charger for about 10 minutes before it would even turn on - I thought I had bricked it!
But, I assume I've shortened the lifespan of the battery now. Which makes me thankful for replaceable batteries.

2. via usb port (charges 1st battery)

will it work as I expect?
I know I could buy a usb battery pack but they are ridiculous prices for what they are and batteries suck.
I could also just swap batteries but that means turning my device off.

S7 Charging

I heard many rumors about Li-ion batteries but my habit is to charge to 100%, im willing to keep this phone for year or two, will i notice big changes?
and are these rumors true? im usually charging phone from 20-30% percent to 100% once a day or maybe once in two day depending usage (but once in two day happens very very rare)
If rumors are true:
Rumors suggest that optimal variant is to keep it 40-80%, but if i charge it to 90% (to reset stats), will it be a problem?
Thanks in advanced

In my opinion, there is no problem!
The only thing I know it is really bad for battery is high temperature. Avoid quick charge at all costs. The slower you charge your battery, more battery life you have (long term).

There are so many misconceptions about batteries! Everyone will say something different, so use the phone the way you want and enjoy it.
The truth is that a lot of the so-called "claims" about best practices have not been proven (hence why there's so much misunderstanding). Yes, high heat can indeed be bad for batteries, but there hasn't been much proven as to how much quick charge will take out of long-term battery life. Same goes for the "charge to 80% theory" - if you keep that mindset you'll always have less battery life than someone who charges to 100% (20% power - give or take depending on the accuracy of the battery meter is a lot, and probably far more than most people will see in a year. By then, you'll still have used up more charge cycles and your battery capacity will be less than when you first got the phone.
Basically, what I'm saying is that there probably isn't a lot that can be done to significantly improve the battery longevity over time. Sure, there are some ideas on "best practices" but just how much difference is it going to make?

well, most fearing part is that this claim has been given by Battery University.
Yeah, we cannot prolong battery life forever, but im not keeping phone forever either, i want to get best results around about year or two, so my goal is to save battery as long as i can, no matter of cost or "No" to habits... so what you think, charging all time to 20-30->100% will not change situation that much about 1-2 years?

exactly that it is... they said that charging like that will preserve battery longevity and always charging to 100% will degrade it so it means ur gf does it right?
