[Q] dock not charging: tf700t with tf201 dock - Asus Transformer TF700

Hi all,
I've searched the forums thoroughly and I couldn't find the solution.
I have a brand new transformer tf700 and keyboard dock tf201. They were purchased in the USA and brought over to me in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The charger will charge the tablet, but not the dock.
When the charger is plugged into the dock, there is no light. Also nothing happens when connecting the tablet and dock. No light on either, and the tablet does not enter a docked mode. So it seems like the battery on the dock is completely drained or the dock is simply faulty.
I've tried leaving it overnight for the initial charge (first thing I did), as well as different outlets and charging by USB.
Since the charger works on the tablet it seems obvious that the problem is with the dock, but is there any further troubleshooting I can do to confirm this 100%? Since I'm in Vietnam, sending the dock back for warranty etc.. is going to be very problematic and in fact its illegal for used electronic items to be shipped back into Vietnam. So I really want to know 100% for sure what the issue is. Vietnam is 220V / 50HZ and it seems the charger is rated for that.
I'm open to more advanced options such as using a multimeter.
Thanks.

It could be that the charger was meant for a newer version of the dock. Your using a TF700T charger with a TF201T dock.
It could just be a compatibility issue. If so just buy a TF700T dock or buy a TF201T charger. I hope this helps.

Very unlikely. I regularly charge my TF700 with the TF101 charger, and I am almost sure the TF201 uses the same charger.

Perhaps, the docks power supply died. Which would mean either buy a new dock or send it in for warranty.

Well I need to test this 100% for certain, because I can't send it in for warranty due to Vietnam's import laws, and the dock is not available for sale here at the moment. So neither of those options are viable
Like I said it has never worked but so far the only advice I have gotten essentially is "plug it in" as well as check the charger. The charger works fine with the tablet so I'm pretty sure that its not that, however I am curious about the mechanism by which it jumps from 5v to 15v and how it may behave in houses with or without voltage stabilizers.
Unless I've overlooked a very simple step I'm really wanting to move forward into a more technical analysis (ie: checking voltages / opening the dock).

Further info: the shop tested the dock before sending it (it was open but unused) and it worked fine.
So this strengthens the case for a charger/voltage/amperage related issue. Of course it could have been damaged in transit but it was DHL priority and appropriately marked so not too likely

It could just be you need a universal plugin to convert the amperage.

Well a universal plug as I know it is just an adapter. It doesn't have any step-up/step-down capabilities.
But if you mean a universal power converter then possibly, although usually they just provide 12v, not 15.
The supplied adapter should be fine though, because its rated at 110-240V (Vietnam is 220V) and 50/60Hz (Vietnam is 50Hz).
My only thought with the adapter was whether it was having problems stepping up to 15v as it charges the tablet at 5v just fine.
Question: Does trickle feeding the tf201 on USB work? Also does the light turn on for a trickle feed?

does this do anything.....
fully charge the tablet on its own, connect it to the dock, connect the charger (plugged in), restart the unit?

No I tried that before creating the thread. Thanks anyway.

Don't know if this has been asked yet, but does the dock actually work (not just the battery)? Can you plug it into a nearby computer and access the mounted tablet? Also, there's a widget on the tablet that can show if the dock/tablet is charging or not. Also, you mentioned trying power from different outlets. Did you try outlets in a different building (like a hotel or university)? I've seen from visiting Brazil that "standardized electricity" doesn't mean that everyone has adopted it.
From what you've mentioned, you really have 3 viable options of failure: Dock battery is bad, dock is completely bad, or incorrect power. If its the battery, then you get to decide if you want to rip it apart or not. If its completely bad, then you would probably need to send it back. Finally, if it just doesn't work where you are, it could be that the building isn't up to standards or even that there might be electrical issues in the building your at.

I use a TF700 charger for charging my TF201. I agree that there's probably little difference in the charger.

It seems like there is a trickle and the light does not turn on. I only tried it for about a minute but the tablet did show that charging was happening. Maybe later I'll try a longer test.
Let us know if you've discovered or decided anything new.

Thanks but I tried that already before posting. Plugging the tablet into the dock does nothing, and plugging the dock into USB at the same time has no result.

Not yet, but I will try that soon. I have a working voltage stabilizer in my house, as well as about 8 computers and 5 tvs etc.. Everything works very well and when I fixed some people's hardware recently it worked in my house but not theirs (due to my power supply being good) so I'm pretty sure that's not the issue. I will take it somewhere else though just to rule that option out.

Right, that's the conclusion I came to as well before posting. So I really wanted to know if I had overlooked something simple (doesn't seem as though I have) or begin more advanced diagnostics such as using a multimeter or hear some stories from someone who has taken their dock apart before I tear in.
Thanks again!

Well, I believe that the tablet should find the dock even if the dock has no battery power. The battery of the dock is merely a backup battery for the tablet and not used by the dock itself for functionality. For this reason, I think you got just a bad dock. If you want to try to replace the battery (since you are closer to China and Japan), you are looking for a C21-TF201D battery. You will need a small torx screwdriver (like a T-3 or T2 - my smallest is a T-4 which is just barely too big) to remove the screws in the back and a Phillips 0 to remove the screws under the pads. Top piece can then be lifted gently and there are 2 ribbons underneath to fully detach the keyboard. From there you should have just a few more things to do to get to the battery. There's a teardown video here but the speech is almost inaudible and the music is distracting.
What I was thinking is that the dock was tested before shipment then it arrived nonfunctional. It leads me to believe that something was damaged during transport (derrr, yeah I know that's obvious just bare with me). If that something damaged was the battery, then there could be some leakage that has led to possibly corrosive damage to other electronics in the device. And that wouldn't be fun to try to fix on your own. If you want to continue trying to troubleshoot it, you might want to do it without attaching the dock to the tablet until you find out what is wrong because you don't want to possibly fry your tablet connector due to the dock acting unreliably.
You should probably start talking with your shipping carrier about the fact that the device was damaged and that you should be reimbursed somehow. This might allow you to get a new one through them or sufficient money for a replacement.

What can I say, you're a legend. That's just the kind of info I was looking for. I'll get stuck into it soon and let you know how it goes.
I also wondered about whether the tablet should connect to the PC via the dock but my thinking is that you may need a minimum charge to get through the extra circuity in the dock (all dem capacimataters and circamatronics). But yeah I see your point.
About the dock working before they sent it, I'd take that with a grain of salt.
Full disclosure: When the company sent the package, they forgot to include the dock altogether and my friend left America the next day. When I was talking to (screaming at) them, they said they were totally out of stock except for one which was opened but unused. They agreed to courier it (DHL express international... ouch) over to Vietnam (as it had most of its packaging so could be treated as new. ). Why that dock was already opened in their shop I wonder. Methinks it was probably already broken and they are trying to cut their losses (they already had to cover international shipping and 100% import tax so they lost out big time due to forgetting to send the dock. They knew I couldn't send it back from Vn either).
Once again thanks!

I've swapped in a mainboard from another dock that had a bad battery.
Now the dock dock functions fine, and the tablet connects and can be charged through the dock.
However the battery light for the dock just stays as orange no matter how long I charge it for. And it always shows 0% battery on the dock so it seems like the battery doesn't charge at all.
What areas should I check? Also if I use a multimeter to check the battery, is there any way to tell if the battery can hold charge (and the issue is somewhere in the connectors) or if the battery cannot hold charge at all?
I tried a cold boot, no luck. Perhaps an alternative is the mainboard needs some kind of hard reset to recognize the new battery? Or of course the battery could just be bad, like the mainboard.

That's great to hear! Now at the very least you have a functional dock.

Unfortunately, it has been years since I've used a multimeter for these situations so I wouldn't be able to help you out directly in that area. Googling for how to test batteries on other devices - like the TF101 dock or even regular batteries - could provide additional valuable information to help you in your experiments.
There's the possibility that it's merely a calibration issue where the dock has no knowledge of the battery's charge, but the fact that there's a constant 0% and the light stays orange all the time (never turning to green) then it leads me to believe it's a bad battery. Have you tried checking if the tablet continues to charge from the dock with no charger attached? If the dock charges the tablet in this fashion, then it's a battery data issue. Likewise, have you tried to use the dock without the battery, detach dock, then reinsert battery to see if that spurs the dock to reset its battery data? You might also look into an app or widget that will show you the battery output charge and all (like this). That's all I can really think of at the moment. Hopefully, from whatever tests you perform we can discover whether it's really a bad battery or something else.

Thanks for suggestions Alienedd. I ended up going back to Australia for Christmas so I quietly slipped the defective parts back in and made a warranty return.

Power Adapter Bad

Man, this is pissing me off. I think my power adapter is bad. It won't charge the battery/keyboard dock or the asus anymore. Took me a while because I usually don't use the kb that much, but I don't see the flashing light when I plug it into the kb. Tried everything already, removing the tip and putting it back on. My KB is dead, zero juice left. My asus wouldn't power on either for a while, but now it has powered on long enough for me to plug it into the computer. The usb charging is taking forever but the asus did charge.
I'm looking for a power adapter and this thing is 45 bucks. What the hell....why so much. Anyone know of a cheaper deal. Hell, I should contact asus about this. Anyone got a replacement before? Are they good at responding.

can't believe how cheap it is
Wow....I've never had a power adapter go bad before a device before. Ever. I got tons of phone adapters around and other devices. I just took a sniff of the adapter, smells like it's burned. Luckily there wasn't a fire. Why the heck so cheap. I didn't know so many people having problems with the adapter.
The charger has no margin built in and appears to be running on the edge of its capacity. To make matters worse people are using it to charge the tab and dock paired which just stresses the charger more. My suggestion: If yoy don't want to kill your charger charge the tab and dock separate with down time between and plug into an outlet that will allow air flow.
I charge my dock and tab every morning when i get up. (I watch videos from my server at night). I try to never use my tab while its plugged in so I'm not putting any stress on the cable. It's too freaking short to reach my outlet to where I sit. Mine has been plugged into the same outlet for 2 months and it takes about an 1 1/2 hours to charge both the dock and tab and then I use it the rest of the day and night. I usually charge them together but sometimes i will charge the dock by itself if I use it a lot during the day
same here, my charger wont charge normally, it takes long time to fully charge now.
What part of the world are you in? I just ordered a new adapter cause I needed a new cord. If you just need the plug maybe we can split the damage and I can send u the new plug and keep the cord?

I'm in houston texas. How much do you want for just the adapter, (if you are in close shipping area).
there is another thread on here for alternative power adapters if yours is broken
Mine stopped charging the dock and only once in a while charged the tablet about 8 weeks ago. It was sent back to Asus repair in Canada along with the tablet - they didn't fix or replace the charger as requested on the RMA and they broke the tablet power button as well so it can not be turned on/off in any event. So another RMA and another month of waiting.
As far as I'm concerned this charger is the perfect accessory for the poor quality Transformer hardware and garbage support I've received from Asus.
I do not understand why anyone would buy a second / or replacement ASUS power adapter. As I have stated before they are marginal at best. If your breaks or you want a second. see the thread started by Devcake and get the Dynex universal camera adapter. It can do your TF, Dock and much more and costs less.

Asus TF101 cannot charge

Hi all,
I owned the Asus TF101 for more than 1 year (warranty expired).
And now my pad cannot charge anymore. I sent to the service, and they talked that mainboard need to be replaced :crying:
But, it still works fine, just cannot charge. I think the charger is broken and bought a chinese charger, but it can only charge a little (20-30%), then stop charging.
Do you think the mainboard is dead? I can believe i that.
Does anyone have this problem and how to fix?
Thanks.

You say you bought a Chinese charger, if by this you mean you bought at USB charger, it will work but very slow and only with tablet off. The TF101 needs 15V on the charge pin to work and the stock charger provides that when pin 7 is grounded by the tab. When pin 7 is not grounded, it provides standard 5V and will not charge well. Try several things. Put stock charger in plastic bag then in freezer for a few hours in case you tripped the over current protection. Take it out and let it warm up in bag then try charging. If that does not work, you can try get a Dynex video camera charger. It has various levels of output voltage on a usb connector. Set voltage top 11V and you should be OK. The TF uses a physical USB connector, HOWEVER the voltages in the connector as well as other signals ARE NOT USB compliant. This means a standard USB charger WILL NOT WORK.

No, I bought a charger like this:
http://www.amazon.com/POWER-ADAPTER-TRAVEL-CHARGER-TRANSFORMER/dp/B007LI1UOE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351734650&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+transformer+charger
Output: 15V, 1200mA
But, at the first time, my pad can charge up to 50% and then stop (not charge when shutdown also)
And now, it will not charge anymore, when I plug the charger, it's only charged 1 or 2 minutes and then stop.
I tried put the original charger to the freezer many time, but not fixed.
Try a factory data reset in the Android settings menu. If that doesn't work, see if you're power adapter can be taken apart (most can to handle international plugs). If so, clean all the metal points where the wall plug contacts the power transformer.

I had the same problem and found a solution:
It's not the cable, but the 2 pins inside the USB opening at the charger!
If you look inside at the top you will find two pins that suppose to fit in the two holes from the USB connector.
By pulling them in and out, these pins move up slowly until they dont fit in the holes anymore.
Grab a little screwdriver and move the pins a little bit back out by sticking the screwdriver behind them.
Reattach the USB cable...you'll be surprised!
A buddy @work bought a used TF101 so cheap ($179, B60 a few months back from Cowboom). It came looking great but just won't charge (is it why it was cheap ?). We tried the freezer trick, that didn't work. The cable was fine hooking up to the PC and would charge slowly from there ----> Finally the cause: it's the cable itself. I gave the man my spare cable (bought @amazon, 2 for $5).
Hic,
I borrow a new charger from my friend, and still not work. I tried reset many time, but nothing happened.
I think there is problem with the main or the charge port connector.....
Maybe I will try to open it. Mainboard replacement take about 200$ (from ASUS service), and I think buy a new one is better. Say goodbye to ASUS.

Worked like a charm!
Sometimes the problem is less complicated than you might think
For greater clarity it's the two outside pins on the row of 4
Does not work for me - also the freezer thing...
My problem is irritating: Yesterday the Charger did not work at all. Then after many attempts to fix it (like freezer,...) I just put it into an Apple wallcharger - did not work either but then I used the Asus Charger and it worked.
Now it does not work - one more time...
Any suggestions?

The reason other chargers (like Apple) do not work is that they only output 5 VDC. The Asus wall wart outputs 15 VDC when an Eee Pad is detected, otherwise it puts out 5 VDC.
It could be a bad cord that one of the contacts is loose and it sometimes does not detect the Eee Pad.

Yes, I noticed that too. I put it in a Apple Charger (is it normal that there is no charging remark on the display?) but then after doing this my Asus charger worked - for 5 hours

I have a new problem, my dock doesn't charge. It show the battery with 0 charge but when I connect the charger. It only charge up the tablet. Dock will remain at 0 charge. Any suggestions? I have try fully wipe & reinstall other rom but still having the same problem.
Sent from my Transformer running no name cm10.1 using Tapatalk 2.
Many users who have let their dock get to 0% have had this issue. There is a toggle switch in the dock that changes state when you get to 0% and does not always switch back when you charge it again. You can try opening the dock and changing the state of this switch and then it should charge after that.
Why it was designed this way, I have no idea.

There's also a user that reported a "known bug" about it here, saying he was going to RMA it. Supposedly some docks are missing a part to make allow recharge at 0%. I can't confirm or deny it.
I'm having the same problem with my charger right now, it will only trickle charge from the ASUS provided adapter while the unit is off, and when the unit is on, it recognizes that it's plugged in to the charger, but does not charge for some strange reason. Is there a possibility that this is a hardware problem within the tablet? or is this a charger related problem?

Gonna answer this in a few days.
As you can see up on the page Ive got this ***** issue. I bought a new original asus charger for around 35 bucks, it will come the next days. Then I can tell you whether it is a problem with the charger - or not.
A fix which worked for me (for about 75%):
Connect the TF to a Apple wallcharger (so it should charge - doesnt do it at all - everythings good). Wait like 10 minutes then you can reconnect it to the Asus charger. If this doesnt help: Strech the cable a bit while "charging".
I had the same issue when I bought my "charge cable" come to find out it didn't work because it was more of a sync so it would mainly sync to PC or device it was connected to then I leave it plugged in over 24hrs and maybe get about 52% of charge ... I bought a charger from Amazon works like a charm and really cheap

I've heard that it's better to NOT buy this charger because the voltage makes the touch digitizer screwy, and can cause battery damage in the long run.
Asus TF301 - charging problems
clicky007 - I just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU - I 'tweeked' the contacts and my ASUS is charging again. Just as back ground, I had always used the ASUS charger and cable together. I have only unplugged the USB connector a few times, as few as 6 (guess-timation). Not exactly a high level of uses/insertions. Poor quality Asus!
Anyway - Many thanks to Clicky007 and Forum-xda

I had the same problem and found a solution:
It's not the cable, but the 2 pins inside the USB opening at the charger!
If you look inside at the top you will find two pins that suppose to fit in the two holes from the USB connector.
By pulling them in and out, these pins move up slowly until they dont fit in the holes anymore.
Grab a little screwdriver and move the pins a little bit back out by sticking the screwdriver behind them.
Reattach the USB cable...you'll be surprised!

surprisingly enough this fixed my charging problem as well. At first I couldn't identify these two pins that you mentioned but for anyone else having the same issue I had. looking at the charging port on the TF with touchscreen facing up and back of the TF down the pin is not on the middle bar with the multiple connectors but it's it's attach to the top part of the port as illustrated by the tilda in my badly drawn diagram below and dashes representing the middle connector bar

Battery suddenly dead on both dock and tablet

Until yesterday, my TF700 was working perfectly fine, but now I'm concerned as the battery in both the dock and the tablet have stopped working.
The AC adaptor's connected to the dock and I always charged both the tablet and the dock together for the most part.
I went to check the device this morning and suddenly found that they're not working at all.
Yesterday evening, I tried switching on the tablet and it would switch on and reach the ASUS screen, but not fully boot up.
I bought it from Amazon's Amazon Warehouse division and I have until the 31st to return this, but in the meantime, I'd like to know why the batteries have died on me suddenly and is there anything I can do about it.

If it's a genuine hardware failure, you'd have to return -- unless you're very proficient at handling and replacing sensitive electronics yourself (microwelding, for example).
It has been reported before, and could be fixe din almost every case by letting the 700 be dead for at least an hour, and then let it fully charge while off (!) -- just let it sit hoked up to the wall charger for at least 8 hours. Then try to turn it on again.
Good luck.

I'll give that advice of yours a try especially as I don't want to have to return it if it's something that can be easily sorted out.

It never hurts trying -- you aren't exactly the first to describe this, but luckily, pretty much all of the others were saved.
I finally managed to get the problem sorted out as it seems that the connection to the port on the keyboard had somehow come a bit loose without me noticing it.
Unfortunately, I have a new problem in that the cable itself seems to have died in that it won't work any more with the adapter as it started crackling a bit when I knocked the connector attached to the AC adaptor itself gently by accident. :crying:

Well, I hope I am right in assuming this is not your luckiest week, huh? Is the cable damaged near the wall charging part? (That's what I understand.) The replacement cables probably are not that expensive, so I'd plonk down on a new one instead of initiating "daredevil repair mode".
Saying that gives me that MacGyver feeling. Duct tape and a pair of scissors would be all that he needs to fix this.
Oh, and maybe a pair of toothpicks and an old sock, just for looks.

The cable itself is fine (it's not worn down to the wire literally like a lot of cables and AC adapters you get for devices like iPods and Galaxy S II's), it's just that it has this weird burnt-like smell at the end connector that plus into the USB socket on the AC adaptor.
As for replacement cables, I'm surprised that they're not that easy to buy offline.

Agreed -- buying them offline is a definite hassle. I have seen them online, though, and you can even hunt down the charger parts or the TF101 and TF201 Prime. They will work flawlessly.
BTW and FWIW (gotta love acronyms), my charging cable smells a bit funny at the end too. This specific one has to put through a lot of power, so I'm not even that surprised.

In all seriousness though, I love my TF700, it's just a shame that it's such a pain in the ass (not literally!) to buy official accessories in the shops and it's not as if you can buy a USB cable for it in the shops unlike ones for the iPod, iPad and iPhone.

Just giving you guys a update concerning my device: It seems now that both batteries don't want to work any more for some reason or other as of yesterday. I've checked both the official USB cable and a third-party cable plugged into the official USB plug and they're not charging up the device at all.
The tablet can connect to my laptop as a media device without any problems, but I'm confused as to why it's not working at all when plugged into a USB adapter.
In any case, I'm going to order a AC adapter from eBay later today and see if that works or not.

TF700 not charging

I mean, after almost a year of having this thing, this is the first time I've experienced something like this. I thought that my surge protector might have had something to do with it, but no matter where I plug it the dock/tablet combo won't charge. I even tried charging the tablet by itself but that didn't work either and I also thought that it might have been the cable, but my PC still detects the tablet.
I'm running an older version of cleanROM from around the month of May if it helps in some way. I would turn the tablet on to check, but I want to preserve the remaining 5% in order to fix this problem.

Seems like a defective cable or tablet. If the tablet doesn't even charge from the dock, it looks more like a defective tablet. If the dock doesn't charge without tablet, it may also be the cable or the charger.
Try this: Keep the tablet off and connect it to the PC (without dock) for a couple of hours - that should charge the battery very slowly (a few % per hour).
Common Probem
I have had similar problems with my TF 300. After researching more of this I find that most of Asus tablets have similar problems. One is the charging cube tripping an internal breaker and allowing only 5v to come out and trickle charge the unit. Some have placed in freezer or just allowed to cool and they seem to work. Others have just had a no charge problem. The battery symbol comes on when you attach the charge cable then disappears but does not show a charge. Some actually turns on a tablet that was off after attaching the cable but still no visible charge. Some will still charge, they just take longer to charge. It seems Asus knows this and it can happen from a few months old to 1-2 yrs old. Now I'm not sure about most people but to pay $400+- for a tablet and get only about 2 yrs usage is not acceptable. I can understand technology passing a tablet or laptop by, that's technology, but for a product to only have a 2 yr life expectancy is not really allowable and should be addressed by Asus. Hook it up if this is not to old of a thread and try it. It may charge even though it doesn't show. If someone else is reading this with a similar problem then try what I have written. It may still charge even though it says it's not. Write Asus and complain. It seems Asus is a very expensive product to fix also. Galaxy Tabs seem to be a very inexpensive product to fix so they may be a better choice for a very similar tablet. :fingers-crossed:

I read in one of the threads to put the charger in the freezer for a few minutes and it worked. Thank you.

Yes, same thing, only I thought the charger wasn't working, ordered a new one (still waiting), left it off the charger for about 30 hours but on the PC, then connected the charger up again and now it's charging!

[Q] Dock not charging but working fine when docked

My TF201/TF700 dock does not charge at all, it shows 0% when docked. The keyboard and touchpad works fine when docked. The orange colour LED blinks when docked but when undocked no light indication when charger is connected. The same charger works fine as it is charging my tablet. I can even access the tablet with fast boot through the dock so the connections are fine but it will just not charge. My doubt is with the dock firmware (DOCK-EC20N-0207). My TF700 is unlocked and running CROMi-X 5.3 - 10.6.1.27.5 ww DEODEX. Any sugestions

Sounds like a battery or charging unit fault.
Yes, looks like the battery is dead. Have you left it at 0% without charging for an extended time? Li-ion batteries don't like that at all - once discharged below a certain level they can become unstable, so maybe the battery safety circuit prevents recharging.

Best way to troubleshoot if you have no equipment to test the battery separately is to open up the tab (if you're game) and plug the dock battery into it to charge. I've done it myself. I'd bet it's not so much the battery is dead as it is the dock's charging circuit is screwed up. In my case, I've tentatively diagnosed that the I/O controller (Nuvoton NPCE781LA0DX) on the bottom side of the dock board has died. Seems to happen to a lot of 201 docks. Sub-standard batch I guess. Still waiting for the chip to arrive. I'll be sure to report on any progress.
@sdbags: you mentioned the charging circuit. Do you have any more info on this hardware-wise? Like a schematics for instance?

I have opened the dock and checked inside and everything seems fine, I also suspect that the charging circuit is the culprit. Any idea where to get the whole board from???

You can't tell really just from the look of it, unless something burned so badly as to leave traces. Ebay sometimes has the board used, but they typically want somewhere around $40 USD, which is almost the price of getting the whole dock sometimes. That's why I decided to mess with the components, out of curiosity more than anything else. If it doesn't work, I can always buy the board.
If you can hang on for another week or so, I'll let you know how it goes in my case. Even with the I/O controller damaged, everything else works fine with my dock.
In your case, it's always possible the battery is gone. You'd need to check that out first before considering anything else at all.

The chip is the right one as quoted before. Or you can read it off the board. There are 2 different versions for the dock, but if I remember correctly, they both use the same chip. You can buy it on Ebay for around 5 bucks (US). You can remove it with a nozzled heat gun to limit the heat to one area and use Kapton tape or heat dissipating shield to cover the surrounding components. The hard part is to solder the thing back. Without appropriate iron and lots of flux, you won't succeed, I'm afraid.
