[Q] TF101 NOT charging

Is anyone else having an issue with charging? it worked fine for a week or more. now when i plug it in, to any outlet, it wont charge at all.. they are considering RMAing the entire unit, and im going to be torked off if i have to wait weeks to get another. argh.
just curious if anyone else is having charging issues.

My unit doesn't charge if the battery is above 90%. I see no problems there, what % is your battery at? That is expected behaviour to an extent to prevent overcharging of the battery.

Mine did that once and I just left it alone for awhile and it started to work again on its own.

i only noticed it because its asking me to connect to charger now.
so its at 11% right now.
Tech wanted me to trickle charge to see if i get anything out of it. Its not working.
Is there any lights on the adapter? i cant remember? but i think the unit may be bad.
SOOOOO pissed, now i have to wait weeks for a replacement to show up.
Has anyone else had a unit they have had to RMA??? is so, did they send a brand new one, sealed in box? if so, i have an extra here, ill just use it and sell the RMA one when it comes in.

EDIT: i had it trickle charging in the off position. just turned it back on. then plugged it in to wall. seems to be charging now.. WTH. wonder if its something with the dock?

Nice to have found your thread on this - mine was doing the same thing after I had if docked. Connected it to my PC and synced and then put it back in the charger and everything is fine.

I also had this problem. The tablet drained the docking station dry, and then neither device would charge from the adapter.
I solved the problem as follows:
1) Remove table from docking station.
2) Turn tablet off completely.
3) Plug tablet only into the charger, at this point the tablet turned on, and began charging.
4) Allow the tablet to charge completely!
5) Reconnect tablet to docking station, and plug docking station into charger.
Voila, all charged Hope it works for others who have this issue!

Mine also had charging problems. When I charged it, it never reached 100%. I took it to the Asus repair center, and they called me today and said they got it to reach 100%. Also, above 90% it reports the battery status as full.
I also to them about the battery drain problem, and gave them my tablet with the dual battery widget installed. Told them to charge both the tablet and keyboard to full, dock the tablet, power off, and wait until morning to see the results.
I'll find out what happens tomorrow when I go see them in the morning.

TF101 not charging today...
It happened already once some time ago, but leaving the power adapter disconnected from the wall plug for 10min solved the problem.
Now it's happening again... and previous workaround is not working.
Tablet is TF101, no docking keyboard, last version of ICS installed.
I've checked the various threads for suggestions: of course I tried the various reboot options; the only thing I'm missing is the refrigerator, but the power adapter is cold (tablet is not charging since 2d, and battery is still alive...).
I've not checked the cable, but have cleaned with air the connectors (just to avoid dust inside).
Any suggestion is welcome.

I have had my charger stop working twice in the past 6 months. Both times I put the wall adapter in a zip-lock bag and placed in my freezer for 30 minutes. Upon removing I plugged the usb cable back into the adapter and bam, everything was working fine again. From what I remember, there is a temperature sensitive circuit breaker inside the adapter that sometimes gets stuck. Even if the charger is cold or has been left alone it takes the dramatic temperature of the freezer to unsieze it. Good Luck it worked for me, twice.

[Q] Wall Charger dead after plugging in USB 3.0 cable

A word of warning - I received my USB 3.0 extension cable from Amazon yesterday, plugged it in when I got home and it started to charge. I noticed after a few minutes that the charge icon had disappeared and now the charger does not seem to work at all; tried both dock and tablet sockets.
This was the cable recommended from the other thread on the forum about charging the device.

I'm fairly sure that it is the UK three pin socket part that has died as the machine is picked up by my PC over the USB cable. I've tried the usual taking the thing apart and re-clipping it back together, I've even checked the teeth on the cable to make sure nothing is damaged, still no joy.
I've emailed Asus support but after reading through the forum I'm not overly positive that they will be any help at all. I suppose I'll have to wait for the Chinese/Hong Kong factories to start kicking these out on Ebay as there doesn't seem anything in the UK at the moment. So I'll sit here and watch my 90% battery slowly die and the machine get covered in dust.

Why don't you get a cheap ipad charger in the meantime. Takes longer but do the charging overnight?

My PSU died, and after a week of back and forth to ASUS service they have declared my TF DOA and told Comet to replace it.
They are doing a doorstep swap tomorrow for me.
I have also posted about PSU's with a known fault, look in the accessories forum

I had the same issue. For me i fixed my PSU by unplugging everything for 20 minutes. Sounds silly but it works. Unplug from the wall socket, take the usb out of the PSU and the TF and leave it al alone for 20 minutes.

I checked my serial number a few days ago and it was supposed to be one of the ok ones.
I also took the thing to pieces as much as I could without resorting to a screwdriver. It's been left out over night and put back together a few times.
The whole thing doesn't look to be the best put together electrical item I've seen. In fact my Desire charger makes it look like some 5p Chinese shonk, oh err hang on a minute it is.
Just looking at iPad chargers now.

Same thing with me and extension off ebay one day after I got it. What I had to do was a factory reset to get it to show the charge icon. Now it's been fine since going on 2 weeks now.

I did that too, but it didn't work for mine, so i tapped it on my desk and voila, it works fine now.....dunno how long it'll last though

Funny you should say that, I was all about to give up and then gave it the tap of life on the window ledge and it started working again. The annoying part was that I'd moved it from the usual changing point to test it out so I have had to very gingerly move it back.
It's still working but I'm not sure how long it will last. I think that maybe the USB lead must have move something out, which is odd as it was a really loose light connection. The upshot is the charger is now going to be left untouched and the USB 3.0 lead is going in the bin.
Not really a robust item the wall charger!

I second this.....same has happened several times to me when trying to get usb 3 cable to act as charger lead extension. Just leave it unplugged for 15- 20 mins and all ok.

Charger or dock battery??
I don't know the inner-workings between the charging adapter, the USB cable and pins - and the dock battery itself so I thought I'd throw this out there:
My dock battery has stopped charging. I can plug the tablet into the dock - have the dock plugged into the wall - and the tablet itself will charge (and the adapter will heat up) - but as soon as I remove the tablet, the adapter cools down, and the dock battery never charges (just blinks orange forever).
I've just been assuming all along that it was the dock or the dock battery that had gone bad for some reason.
But would it be possible that it could be a pin / cable / adapter issue instead?
I wonder if different pins control the charging of the tablet vs the charging of the dock?
I'm *hoping* it's the dock itself because at least I can still return that and wait for another to come in stock. But if it's the adapter or cable, it looks like I'd be SOL and have to send my whole freakin tablet back for a replacement!

I'm sitting on hold with Asus now because last night neither my tablet or dock would charge. I do not have the extension cable but have one on order from Ebay. I was planning to test all the pins on the cable while the unit was charging to figure out which additional pins are communicating with the charger to start the charge. While sitting on hold I came across this post and decided to try the charger again and now my tablet is charging. Will try the dock once I'm fully charged.
I love my TF but this charging stuff is micky mouse. I hear some people can charge connected to a PC, I have never been able to. Now I need to do some more searching to see who had what extension cable from where.

It's all a bit of pot luck by the sounds of it.
Don't leave it on charge over night, don't plug the wrong sort of USB lead in and don't move the charger.
I think I'll be buying some £2 Ebay charger as soon as they appear, can't be any worse.

A sense of panic set in when my charger stopped working after trying to use a USB 3.0 extension cable I purchased from Monoprice. After following this simple suggestion, I'm happy to report that all is working once again.
I never did get the USB 3.0 extension cable to work though. It was one that others have reported success with too. I guess I'll be sticking to a cheap extension cord for now.

This extension from CompUSA works like a charm. Its prices is awesome too. The adapter charges TF/KB seamlessly for me. Spread the words.

Ultra also makes this cable in a 12 foot length. Part #U12-40579. I have both the 6 foot and 12 foot lengths and they charge my 32TF and dock without issues.Both can be purchased from CompUSA.

Charger died

So my co-worker has an Asus transformer like i do and he is on his 3rd charger for it. So i have been lending him mine while he waits for his new one. So last night he borrowed it and when i went to charge mine it no longer works. Are the chargers really this faulty or could it be his device that is killing the charger?

After charging my tablet for a while or overnight the charger does not work either.
So what I do is either wait it out or throw it in a ziploc bag and toss it in the freezer(I can't remember where I found this tip but it does work).
The charger gets excessively hot after 2 hours of straight charging and as a safety feature I believe it shuts off. Throwing it in the freezer simply resets the charger I believe, and it is only for about 15 minutes.

They definitely have different versions, the later version 0B-2LF, 0B-3LF (?) are supposed to be less failure prone.
You can always make a Do It Yourself (DIY) charger with a wall charger and USB A Female to 5525 Plug Female Power Adapter.

I’ve got similar experience – when I’ve tried to charge tablet second time after few hours of playing with it, when I’ve plugged charger in, icon didn’t show me expected “charging” icon. At first I’ve thought that was faulty cable but plugged to PC worked fine. Then I’ve found some info that connectors between charger and plug adaptor tend not to have a contact. I’ve taken out plug adaptor and bent slightly those 2 wires on charger, then connected the plug adaptor back. When I’ve plugged it into wall socket – it worked. I’m on 0L-1LF model.

I've encountered this problem too. At first I thought the charger was dead, but when I rebooted the transformer while plugged, it start to charge again. Maybe you should try that.

It probably still charges or has some charge optimization like my Lenovo laptop has. Mine does the same but never any issues.

Another succesful "freezer" here.
To document - My powerstrip turn off with PC and charger is plugged in to it. Tablet was @ < 20% when I put on to charge, not realizing strip was off (company in town so wife wanted it off in case room was needed for kids), got up next morning and now tablet @ < 4%. Took charger and tried multiple outlets and none would charge and charger was not warm. Tablet @ < 4% and now plugged to USB port on laptop (recongized USB Debug and Asus Sync) so it is trickle charging sort of. Search turns up this (and a couple of others) tread. Turned off tablet (to improve trickle charge performance) and waited the 15 minutes. Removed charger from freezer, plugged into wall, plugged in tablet and tablet turned on and now shows as charging.
I assume this is a hardware/software/firmware problem in that the charger is not going to burn itself out trying to push too much voltage and the reduced charge state of tablet is raising resistence and the firmware has a pointer wrong and it needs to be a little colder to be right.

I got kinda freaked out when my charger didn't work with my tablet last time. I blamed the custom rom since it happened a couple days after I rooted and flashed a custom rom on it, and I never had trouble with stock before. But, it wasn't the charger, since I plugged in the dock and it could charge. So maybe sometimes the tablet doesn't take in a certain amount of voltage or something..? (It was fine after I rebooted.. or update roms, can't remember.)

I once thought that my charger had died but then I tried a hard reset (hold the power button down for 10 seconds) and it started working again. It's worth giving it a go before you go out and buy a new charger.

I think there is something off with his TF if it killed 3 or 4 chargers.

My charger died and no amount of putting it in the freezer or anything else would make it work again.
The only thing I did was pull the cable out attach the TF to my laptop and download files to a different Micro SD card I had bought. Plugged it back in and no workie.
Lucky I had bought another charger for a spare and had it to check the cable ..charger and make sure it what part actually wasn't working...and charge my TF.
It's at an ASUS service center hopefully being fixed.
They do go bad. Theres been documented problems with them just like the dock,, and tablet. When your trying to build the cheapest tablet around ...parts and some things provided by other manufactures ( I know Asus doesn't make everything that goes into it) don't always turn out as well as you've planned.

Dock won't charge but still charges tablet and functions well.

I've seen many questions about the dock but can't find one that talks about this issue I just had this morning.
Last night both my tablet and dock were charged completely. This afternoon I start using my tablet and notice the tablet is at 30% and the dock is fully discharged at 0%. I plugged the keyboard in connected to the tablet to charge it. The tablet is charging just fine but the keyboard is flashing the orange light and is not charging. I have tried plugging just the keyboard in and it is still flashing orange and not charging. I thought it could be the power supply but the tablet itself is charging just fine.
Does anyone have any ideas I should try before trying to see if I can get a replacement?

When the dock is fully discharged the red led will flash for a while when your charging. It's normal, when you have charged for a while it will be constantly on!

Defective. Exchange dock or send to Asus for repair.

I don't know what happened but I left it plugged in all night yesterday and this morning it was half charged with the light on orange so I'm hoping that sometime when I was sleeping it fixed itself.

I've had a dock die and just flash with no charging on the prime before guess it was defective. Picked up an open box from ebay for 90 bucks works like a charm.

I got the dock to charge, but had to monkey around to get it to fit just right....still not fun....

Got it solved by doing a cold boot.
Turned it off then held power + vol down combo untill I saw the text "cold-coot linux" apear, released the buttons and waited boot.
Now the charging light is blinking.on the dock.

Ok. Honest mistake. It wasn't charging. It blinks when active (connected to tablet and tablet unlocked...if you lock the tablet the dock led stops blinking).
Tried the cold boot thing described above. Didn't work.
The charger charges the tablet alright, but not the dock.
Opened it up yo see if there was something wrong (cable disconnected or so). Unplugged and plugged everything back. Still won't charge. =/
Any ideas????

Apparently or my dock jack is bad or my cable connector...most probably the dock. =/
Any ideas on what to do now? Where can I get this jack? Is it not extremely hard to replace? Worth it?

I have the same issue, and after reading your post, I tried your hack and the charging light finally came on for my dock. Evidence strongly suggests its a flaky electrical connection in either the cord or the jack. I am leaning towards jack because my cord will charge my tablet when directly plugged in, but I am not yet convinced.
Noticing that the connector's pins are on the outside, and it connects to a double-sided blade of pins, I tried to squeeze the connector some to make a better electrical connection. It was a little better, in that I could occasionally now get the charging light to turn on for a few seconds by applying pressure to just the cord's connector, but still not reliable. I then tried to use a small blade between the plastic and outer metal casing of the cord's connector, and I destroyed the came and now it won't even charge my tablet. I'll have to go to the store tomorrow to replace the cable, and we'll see if a new cord works to power the dock.
There's a distinct possibility that a new cable might just be all the fix I need.
Looking at the teardown on ifixit, it seems like the tablet uses a slightly different connector housing than the dock. Perhaps the dock has a less reliable part.

A new cable did not fix it.
Without another good path forward, I get brave and have attempted to reshape the receiver jack's metal housing to be more snug, hoping that a squeeze would do it. I have only managed to mangle it further.

TF700 not charging

I mean, after almost a year of having this thing, this is the first time I've experienced something like this. I thought that my surge protector might have had something to do with it, but no matter where I plug it the dock/tablet combo won't charge. I even tried charging the tablet by itself but that didn't work either and I also thought that it might have been the cable, but my PC still detects the tablet.
I'm running an older version of cleanROM from around the month of May if it helps in some way. I would turn the tablet on to check, but I want to preserve the remaining 5% in order to fix this problem.

Seems like a defective cable or tablet. If the tablet doesn't even charge from the dock, it looks more like a defective tablet. If the dock doesn't charge without tablet, it may also be the cable or the charger.
Try this: Keep the tablet off and connect it to the PC (without dock) for a couple of hours - that should charge the battery very slowly (a few % per hour).

Common Probem
I have had similar problems with my TF 300. After researching more of this I find that most of Asus tablets have similar problems. One is the charging cube tripping an internal breaker and allowing only 5v to come out and trickle charge the unit. Some have placed in freezer or just allowed to cool and they seem to work. Others have just had a no charge problem. The battery symbol comes on when you attach the charge cable then disappears but does not show a charge. Some actually turns on a tablet that was off after attaching the cable but still no visible charge. Some will still charge, they just take longer to charge. It seems Asus knows this and it can happen from a few months old to 1-2 yrs old. Now I'm not sure about most people but to pay $400+- for a tablet and get only about 2 yrs usage is not acceptable. I can understand technology passing a tablet or laptop by, that's technology, but for a product to only have a 2 yr life expectancy is not really allowable and should be addressed by Asus. Hook it up if this is not to old of a thread and try it. It may charge even though it doesn't show. If someone else is reading this with a similar problem then try what I have written. It may still charge even though it says it's not. Write Asus and complain. It seems Asus is a very expensive product to fix also. Galaxy Tabs seem to be a very inexpensive product to fix so they may be a better choice for a very similar tablet. :fingers-crossed:

Yes, same thing, only I thought the charger wasn't working, ordered a new one (still waiting), left it off the charger for about 30 hours but on the PC, then connected the charger up again and now it's charging!
