Hi all,
I owned the Asus TF101 for more than 1 year (warranty expired).
And now my pad cannot charge anymore. I sent to the service, and they talked that mainboard need to be replaced :crying:
But, it still works fine, just cannot charge. I think the charger is broken and bought a chinese charger, but it can only charge a little (20-30%), then stop charging.
Do you think the mainboard is dead? I can believe i that.
Does anyone have this problem and how to fix?

You say you bought a Chinese charger, if by this you mean you bought at USB charger, it will work but very slow and only with tablet off. The TF101 needs 15V on the charge pin to work and the stock charger provides that when pin 7 is grounded by the tab. When pin 7 is not grounded, it provides standard 5V and will not charge well. Try several things. Put stock charger in plastic bag then in freezer for a few hours in case you tripped the over current protection. Take it out and let it warm up in bag then try charging. If that does not work, you can try get a Dynex video camera charger. It has various levels of output voltage on a usb connector. Set voltage top 11V and you should be OK. The TF uses a physical USB connector, HOWEVER the voltages in the connector as well as other signals ARE NOT USB compliant. This means a standard USB charger WILL NOT WORK.

No, I bought a charger like this:

But, at the first time, my pad can charge up to 50% and then stop (not charge when shutdown also)
And now, it will not charge anymore, when I plug the charger, it's only charged 1 or 2 minutes and then stop.
I tried put the original charger to the freezer many time, but not fixed.
Try a factory data reset in the Android settings menu. If that doesn't work, see if you're power adapter can be taken apart (most can to handle international plugs). If so, clean all the metal points where the wall plug contacts the power transformer.

I had the same problem and found a solution:
It's not the cable, but the 2 pins inside the USB opening at the charger!
If you look inside at the top you will find two pins that suppose to fit in the two holes from the USB connector.
By pulling them in and out, these pins move up slowly until they dont fit in the holes anymore.
Grab a little screwdriver and move the pins a little bit back out by sticking the screwdriver behind them.
Reattach the USB cable...you'll be surprised!
A buddy @work bought a used TF101 so cheap ($179, B60 a few months back from Cowboom). It came looking great but just won't charge (is it why it was cheap ?). We tried the freezer trick, that didn't work. The cable was fine hooking up to the PC and would charge slowly from there ----> Finally the cause: it's the cable itself. I gave the man my spare cable (bought @amazon, 2 for $5).

I borrow a new charger from my friend, and still not work. I tried reset many time, but nothing happened.
I think there is problem with the main or the charge port connector.....
Maybe I will try to open it. Mainboard replacement take about 200$ (from ASUS service), and I think buy a new one is better. Say goodbye to ASUS.

Sometimes the problem is less complicated than you might think
For greater clarity it's the two outside pins on the row of 4
Does not work for me - also the freezer thing...
My problem is irritating: Yesterday the Charger did not work at all. Then after many attempts to fix it (like freezer,...) I just put it into an Apple wallcharger - did not work either but then I used the Asus Charger and it worked.
Now it does not work - one more time...
Any suggestions?

The reason other chargers (like Apple) do not work is that they only output 5 VDC. The Asus wall wart outputs 15 VDC when an Eee Pad is detected, otherwise it puts out 5 VDC.
It could be a bad cord that one of the contacts is loose and it sometimes does not detect the Eee Pad.

Yes, I noticed that too. I put it in a Apple Charger (is it normal that there is no charging remark on the display?) but then after doing this my Asus charger worked - for 5 hours
I am confused...
I have a new problem, my dock doesn't charge. It show the battery with 0 charge but when I connect the charger. It only charge up the tablet. Dock will remain at 0 charge. Any suggestions? I have try fully wipe & reinstall other rom but still having the same problem.

Many users who have let their dock get to 0% have had this issue. There is a toggle switch in the dock that changes state when you get to 0% and does not always switch back when you charge it again. You can try opening the dock and changing the state of this switch and then it should charge after that.
Why it was designed this way, I have no idea.

There's also a user that reported a "known bug" about it here, saying he was going to RMA it. Supposedly some docks are missing a part to make allow recharge at 0%. I can't confirm or deny it.
I'm having the same problem with my charger right now, it will only trickle charge from the ASUS provided adapter while the unit is off, and when the unit is on, it recognizes that it's plugged in to the charger, but does not charge for some strange reason. Is there a possibility that this is a hardware problem within the tablet? or is this a charger related problem?

Gonna answer this in a few days.
As you can see up on the page Ive got this ***** issue. I bought a new original asus charger for around 35 bucks, it will come the next days. Then I can tell you whether it is a problem with the charger - or not.
A fix which worked for me (for about 75%):
Connect the TF to a Apple wallcharger (so it should charge - doesnt do it at all - everythings good). Wait like 10 minutes then you can reconnect it to the Asus charger. If this doesnt help: Strech the cable a bit while "charging".
I had the same issue when I bought my "charge cable" come to find out it didn't work because it was more of a sync so it would mainly sync to PC or device it was connected to then I leave it plugged in over 24hrs and maybe get about 52% of charge ... I bought a charger from Amazon works like a charm and really cheap

I've heard that it's better to NOT buy this charger because the voltage makes the touch digitizer screwy, and can cause battery damage in the long run.

clicky007 - I just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU - I 'tweeked' the contacts and my ASUS is charging again. Just as back ground, I had always used the ASUS charger and cable together. I have only unplugged the USB connector a few times, as few as 6 (guess-timation). Not exactly a high level of uses/insertions. Poor quality Asus!

surprisingly enough this fixed my charging problem as well. At first I couldn't identify these two pins that you mentioned but for anyone else having the same issue I had. looking at the charging port on the TF with touchscreen facing up and back of the TF down the pin is not on the middle bar with the multiple connectors but it's it's attach to the top part of the port as illustrated by the tilda in my badly drawn diagram below and dashes representing the middle connector bar

A word of warning - I received my USB 3.0 extension cable from Amazon yesterday, plugged it in when I got home and it started to charge. I noticed after a few minutes that the charge icon had disappeared and now the charger does not seem to work at all; tried both dock and tablet sockets.
This was the cable recommended from the other thread on the forum about charging the device.

I'm fairly sure that it is the UK three pin socket part that has died as the machine is picked up by my PC over the USB cable. I've tried the usual taking the thing apart and re-clipping it back together, I've even checked the teeth on the cable to make sure nothing is damaged, still no joy.
I've emailed Asus support but after reading through the forum I'm not overly positive that they will be any help at all. I suppose I'll have to wait for the Chinese/Hong Kong factories to start kicking these out on Ebay as there doesn't seem anything in the UK at the moment. So I'll sit here and watch my 90% battery slowly die and the machine get covered in dust.
Why don't you get a cheap ipad charger in the meantime. Takes longer but do the charging overnight?

My PSU died, and after a week of back and forth to ASUS service they have declared my TF DOA and told Comet to replace it.
They are doing a doorstep swap tomorrow for me.
I have also posted about PSU's with a known fault, look in the accessories forum
I had the same issue. For me i fixed my PSU by unplugging everything for 20 minutes. Sounds silly but it works. Unplug from the wall socket, take the usb out of the PSU and the TF and leave it al alone for 20 minutes.

I checked my serial number a few days ago and it was supposed to be one of the ok ones.
I also took the thing to pieces as much as I could without resorting to a screwdriver. It's been left out over night and put back together a few times.
The whole thing doesn't look to be the best put together electrical item I've seen. In fact my Desire charger makes it look like some 5p Chinese shonk, oh err hang on a minute it is.
Just looking at iPad chargers now.
Same thing with me and extension off ebay one day after I got it. What I had to do was a factory reset to get it to show the charge icon. Now it's been fine since going on 2 weeks now.

I did that too, but it didn't work for mine, so i tapped it on my desk and voila, it works fine now.....dunno how long it'll last though

Funny you should say that, I was all about to give up and then gave it the tap of life on the window ledge and it started working again. The annoying part was that I'd moved it from the usual changing point to test it out so I have had to very gingerly move it back.
It's still working but I'm not sure how long it will last. I think that maybe the USB lead must have move something out, which is odd as it was a really loose light connection. The upshot is the charger is now going to be left untouched and the USB 3.0 lead is going in the bin.
Not really a robust item the wall charger!

I second this.....same has happened several times to me when trying to get usb 3 cable to act as charger lead extension. Just leave it unplugged for 15- 20 mins and all ok.
Charger or dock battery??
I don't know the inner-workings between the charging adapter, the USB cable and pins - and the dock battery itself so I thought I'd throw this out there:
My dock battery has stopped charging. I can plug the tablet into the dock - have the dock plugged into the wall - and the tablet itself will charge (and the adapter will heat up) - but as soon as I remove the tablet, the adapter cools down, and the dock battery never charges (just blinks orange forever).
I've just been assuming all along that it was the dock or the dock battery that had gone bad for some reason.
But would it be possible that it could be a pin / cable / adapter issue instead?
I wonder if different pins control the charging of the tablet vs the charging of the dock?
I'm *hoping* it's the dock itself because at least I can still return that and wait for another to come in stock. But if it's the adapter or cable, it looks like I'd be SOL and have to send my whole freakin tablet back for a replacement!
I'm sitting on hold with Asus now because last night neither my tablet or dock would charge. I do not have the extension cable but have one on order from Ebay. I was planning to test all the pins on the cable while the unit was charging to figure out which additional pins are communicating with the charger to start the charge. While sitting on hold I came across this post and decided to try the charger again and now my tablet is charging. Will try the dock once I'm fully charged.
I love my TF but this charging stuff is micky mouse. I hear some people can charge connected to a PC, I have never been able to. Now I need to do some more searching to see who had what extension cable from where.

It's all a bit of pot luck by the sounds of it.
Don't leave it on charge over night, don't plug the wrong sort of USB lead in and don't move the charger.
I think I'll be buying some £2 Ebay charger as soon as they appear, can't be any worse.

A sense of panic set in when my charger stopped working after trying to use a USB 3.0 extension cable I purchased from Monoprice. After following this simple suggestion, I'm happy to report that all is working once again.
I never did get the USB 3.0 extension cable to work though. It was one that others have reported success with too. I guess I'll be sticking to a cheap extension cord for now.
This extension from CompUSA works like a charm. Its prices is awesome too. The adapter charges TF/KB seamlessly for me. Spread the words.

Ultra also makes this cable in a 12 foot length. Part #U12-40579. I have both the 6 foot and 12 foot lengths and they charge my 32TF and dock without issues.Both can be purchased from CompUSA.
So, I'm traveling (for a long period of time) with my TF. One day, it stopped charging.
I took apart the power brick and put it back together, I even tried to freeze it (on advice from some older "not charging" threads), nothing helps.
When I connect the TF to my laptop via USB - it recognizes the TF. When I connect my iPod to the power brick (with its own cable obviously) - it charges just fine. So what broke?!
I hate this, the local stores here don't sell the power brick separately and I don't even know if that's the source of the problem.

Sounds like the power pin in the TF port has bent/broken or just has some detritus/dirt/foreign matter in it and is stopping it from charging properly. Have a look, but you might need to check the port with lots of light and a magnifying glass, so not easy while you're on the move.
If you are in the US Office Depot sells the charger and USB cable for $30.
strange thing is that sometime my transformer doesn't charge.
i have to reboot and it start to charge again.
Same happened here. Asus tech wanted me to wipe the device. After trying other options to get it to charge, I did but it didn't wipe... Go figure... But it booted up normally and now it has been charging.

Apparently charging has some history of issues on the TF101.
I just had mine act up on me, went around the house trying different wall sockets and checked that it worked fine via USB to PC. Ended up taking a can of dust-off to all the pins, then shoving the plug hard into the TF101 socket. Now it works.
Should have mentioned I have a dock as well, which doesn't charge either (so problem is probably with cable/brick)
I'm trying to get new ones (nowhere to be found here, but I'm trying to get one sent to me). I tried looking for dust/dirt and different wall sockets, no luck.
Weird thing - I left it plugged in to the wall overnight and it grew from 5% to 15%, so looks like some electricity is trickling.
I had the same problem with mine after I had it for 5 weeks, I just RMA'd it and everything is fine.
Im having the same exact problem. I left it charging over night by mistake the night before yesterday. I only let it charge 3 hours the most because I know the Transformers have known issues.
I tried to charge it this morning and nothing. I plug it into my PC. The PC recognized the Transformer but no charging. Turned it on and off, nothing.
Just put the power brick in the freezer, waiting to dry up to see if it works .
Although the tf charger and cable has a usb connector it is not usb compliant. the charger brick looks for a gnd signal on pin 7 of the usb connector ( normally a usb 3.0 data line) to determine it should supply 15V to the positive charge pin vs standard 5V. The slow charge you are seeing is from the 5V supply . check to see if pin7 is seeing the gnd signal. Are you using a usb 2.0 extension cable as it doesn't have have pin 7 conductor. be careful connecting your ipod as it could accidentaly see 15V vs the 5V it is designed for.

I bought a TF101 a week ago - it is used and came without the charger nor a data-cable.
So I bought an datacable off amazon which worked fine. But as we all know a usb port has not enough power to charge the tablet.
After looking around the Internet I build myself an molex to usb adapter which worked like a charm.
But now I plugged in the cable and it's not charging anymore. (8h ago it worked fine)
The cable is fine (PC can still connect to the transformer).
The adapter is fine (multimeter is giving out 11.56V)
Now when I plug in the cable it gives me a picture of a nearly empty battery.
I tried resetting the tablet - no effect.
Anyone knows this problem? Or has an idea how to fix it?

I think you should first bought the Asus original charger instead which guaranteed supplying 100% correct voltages and ampere to your tablet. Does it charge via PC USB port now?
11.56V isn't enough to trip the HV charge, you need at Least 12V.
Try the ASUS charger.

And the only way to confirmed this is by plugging the TF to PC via USB port and see if it still charging, or try the original Asus charger.
Using another adaptor with rating voltage safe to our TF doesn't guarantee it fit to the TF after all. There's always fluctuation in between the incoming and outgoing supply, and the transformer seemed to be a little sensitive to this tiny changes..

The cable could be faulty.
Mines was - and yes the pc still recognised the tablet when connected. Theres 4 pins in it compare to the usual 3 (i may stand corrected on that 1)
RMA confirmed this and Asus sent a new sync cable back.
Its maybe going to cost a few quid but as the rest of the guys have said - get an origional charger and cable.
Ok, first of all thank you for your help.
I would have bought a original Charger but could not find any in local stores nor amazon (.de) exept a traveller set which costs around 40€ (which is too way much)
I plugged the transformer (turned off) in my IPod wallcharger (5V1A) overnight and it charged.
Now I am really confused - why is it charging over the lower voltage output but not over the 12V?

It's the build in power protection preventing your TF from catching fire from over fluctuation voltages supply. In ASUS original charger, it maintain the right amount of output even with uneven input supply. And the ipod charger has it as well..

I've seen many questions about the dock but can't find one that talks about this issue I just had this morning.
Last night both my tablet and dock were charged completely. This afternoon I start using my tablet and notice the tablet is at 30% and the dock is fully discharged at 0%. I plugged the keyboard in connected to the tablet to charge it. The tablet is charging just fine but the keyboard is flashing the orange light and is not charging. I have tried plugging just the keyboard in and it is still flashing orange and not charging. I thought it could be the power supply but the tablet itself is charging just fine.
Does anyone have any ideas I should try before trying to see if I can get a replacement?

When the dock is fully discharged the red led will flash for a while when your charging. It's normal, when you have charged for a while it will be constantly on!

Defective. Exchange dock or send to Asus for repair.
I don't know what happened but I left it plugged in all night yesterday and this morning it was half charged with the light on orange so I'm hoping that sometime when I was sleeping it fixed itself.

A whole night charged and half charged still doesnt seem right... If its all fully charged now.. it a matter of time when it will happen again..

I've had a dock die and just flash with no charging on the prime before guess it was defective. Picked up an open box from ebay for 90 bucks works like a charm.
I got the dock to charge, but had to monkey around to get it to fit just right....still not fun....
Got it solved by doing a cold boot.
Turned it off then held power + vol down combo untill I saw the text "cold-coot linux" apear, released the buttons and waited boot.
Now the charging light is blinking.on the dock.
Ok. Honest mistake. It wasn't charging. It blinks when active (connected to tablet and tablet unlocked...if you lock the tablet the dock led stops blinking).
Tried the cold boot thing described above. Didn't work.
The charger charges the tablet alright, but not the dock.
Opened it up yo see if there was something wrong (cable disconnected or so). Unplugged and plugged everything back. Still won't charge. =/
Any ideas????

Got it to charge using a pliers. Images attached.
Apparently or my dock jack is bad or my cable connector...most probably the dock. =/
Any ideas on what to do now? Where can I get this jack? Is it not extremely hard to replace? Worth it?
I'm in Brazil, so I got no official ASUS support for this piece. =(

I have the same issue, and after reading your post, I tried your hack and the charging light finally came on for my dock. Evidence strongly suggests its a flaky electrical connection in either the cord or the jack. I am leaning towards jack because my cord will charge my tablet when directly plugged in, but I am not yet convinced.
Noticing that the connector's pins are on the outside, and it connects to a double-sided blade of pins, I tried to squeeze the connector some to make a better electrical connection. It was a little better, in that I could occasionally now get the charging light to turn on for a few seconds by applying pressure to just the cord's connector, but still not reliable. I then tried to use a small blade between the plastic and outer metal casing of the cord's connector, and I destroyed the came and now it won't even charge my tablet. I'll have to go to the store tomorrow to replace the cable, and we'll see if a new cord works to power the dock.
There's a distinct possibility that a new cable might just be all the fix I need.
Looking at the teardown on ifixit, it seems like the tablet uses a slightly different connector housing than the dock. Perhaps the dock has a less reliable part.

A new cable did not fix it.
Without another good path forward, I get brave and have attempted to reshape the receiver jack's metal housing to be more snug, hoping that a squeeze would do it. I have only managed to mangle it further.
I am having the weirdest problem on my Asus Transformer TF101 . I had updated to ICS via ASUS's check update option and then it stopped charging at all ( I do not have the dock, just the wallwart) .... . It would not charge ( not even show a charge flash symbol on the battery ) when the tablet is on AND plugged in..It would ONLY charge with the Wallwart when the tab is completely shutdown .i.e. I would have to shutdown the tab completely and then plug it in so that it can trickle charge over night to +80%. I changed the cable , changed the wall wart same issue... Then I thought its possibly a sw issue so I resetted , wiped caches, reset battery stats and even upgraded the sw to a Rayman's CyanogenMod 10 ♦ B4 ( currently running it ) .. Now I can at least see a small charge flash symbol when the tab is plugged in but instead of charging the tab , when I look at the battery status it shows discharging.... I can only charge this dang thing when its completely shutdown.. I still think its a sw issue.. Wondering anyone else had this issue and more importantly what is the fix ?? ..
Fixes I found in the forum that I've tried so far :
1. check/uncheck the stay awake option
2. Rooted ,installed Rayman's CM10-B4 rom
3. install dual battery app to check battery stats,( dont know why was this suggested as a fix )
4. wiped battery stats in recovery mode , thrice
5. changed usb cable
6. Put the charger/wallwart in freezer overnight and then check the charging ..
I'm outta warranty duration so desperately need to fix this on my own ..
You are using the ASUS TF101 supplied charger with its included cable, and nothing else? I.e. no extension USB cord etc.
The ASUS TF101 charges using 12-15V from the wallwart, not the standard USB 5V. Using standard USB, it's only able to trickle charge during power off, and this sounds exactly as what you are describing.
I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. I even tried the freezer trick too in desperation as it was my last resort before admitting defeat in my battle with trickle charging. In the end I purchased this charger off ebay:

I have tested with the same USB cable that came with it originally and the wall wart is original too. I changed the wall wart and USB to see if there's a difference but apparently none. Not using any USB hubs either...

Sorry to disagree, but everything you describe sounds as a charger issue to me, not a SW issue. If it happens even with the TF powered off this makes me almost sure...
Sometimes it's good to start from the begining, although you think you have tried everything...
Get your TF, your asus original wall adapter and cable and try it. Does it work?
If not try another outlet on your house. Does it work?
If not, you may even try another outlet (work, school, whatever). Does it work?
If not exchange only the wall adapter (for another asus original one if possible) and start over.
If nothing changes, get back to your wall charger, change the USB charging cable and start again.
If nothing changes, change wall adapter + cable and start again.
Remember... The TF will only charge with the asus wall adapter and cable or a specific charger. If you try to use your computer's USB or a wall adapter from a phone / generic USB device you won't get any charge at all, and will only trickle charge when the TF is off.

Same problem and all i did was get a new asus charger and bam charging, thank you soooo much omg my tablet has been messed up for so long thank you.

Sounds like there is an issue that the charger is not recognizing that an Eee Pad is attached. Might be time for a new charger.
Hello all, I have the exact same problem. I received my Asus TF101 for Christmas last year. Then later I found out that you need it root it in order to upgrade the OS. I rooted my TF, then I upgrade it the OS from Honeycomb(4.0.3) to Jellybean(4.1.2), (4.2.2) A month later after upgrading the OS my battery drain faster and I can only charge the battery with my TF turned off. If I plugged the the charger while its on it, the battery says its not charging. I change the wall wart and the cable but the issue still persist. Please help!!!

Is the new wall wart you are using a genuine Asus wall wart? If it is just a tablet USB charger, that will not work as the TF101 needs 15 VDC to charge instead of the standard 5 VDC of USB. The Asus wall wart auto-detects and switches between the two voltages to allow it to be used for other devices as well.
