[Q] TF101 only charges when completely shutdown? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am having the weirdest problem on my Asus Transformer TF101 . I had updated to ICS via ASUS's check update option and then it stopped charging at all ( I do not have the dock, just the wallwart) .... . It would not charge ( not even show a charge flash symbol on the battery ) when the tablet is on AND plugged in..It would ONLY charge with the Wallwart when the tab is completely shutdown .i.e. I would have to shutdown the tab completely and then plug it in so that it can trickle charge over night to +80%. I changed the cable , changed the wall wart same issue... Then I thought its possibly a sw issue so I resetted , wiped caches, reset battery stats and even upgraded the sw to a Rayman's CyanogenMod 10 ♦ B4 ( currently running it ) .. Now I can at least see a small charge flash symbol when the tab is plugged in but instead of charging the tab , when I look at the battery status it shows discharging.... I can only charge this dang thing when its completely shutdown.. I still think its a sw issue.. Wondering anyone else had this issue and more importantly what is the fix ?? ..
Fixes I found in the forum that I've tried so far :
1. check/uncheck the stay awake option
2. Rooted ,installed Rayman's CM10-B4 rom
3. install dual battery app to check battery stats,( dont know why was this suggested as a fix )
4. wiped battery stats in recovery mode , thrice
5. changed usb cable
6. Put the charger/wallwart in freezer overnight and then check the charging ..
I'm outta warranty duration so desperately need to fix this on my own ..

You are using the ASUS TF101 supplied charger with its included cable, and nothing else? I.e. no extension USB cord etc.
The ASUS TF101 charges using 12-15V from the wallwart, not the standard USB 5V. Using standard USB, it's only able to trickle charge during power off, and this sounds exactly as what you are describing.

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. I even tried the freezer trick too in desperation as it was my last resort before admitting defeat in my battle with trickle charging. In the end I purchased this charger off ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140714910102?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
I know it's advertised as a UK charger but if you read further down the page they ship the US and EU charger too. I've had it for about a week now and it works perfectly. I was dubious about buying a non Asus charger after reading reviews about them on Amazon about overheating but mine seems fine. If anything it's actually cooler than the original one.

I have tested with the same USB cable that came with it originally and the wall wart is original too. I changed the wall wart and USB to see if there's a difference but apparently none. Not using any USB hubs either...

Sorry to disagree, but everything you describe sounds as a charger issue to me, not a SW issue. If it happens even with the TF powered off this makes me almost sure...
Sometimes it's good to start from the begining, although you think you have tried everything...
Get your TF, your asus original wall adapter and cable and try it. Does it work?
If not try another outlet on your house. Does it work?
If not, you may even try another outlet (work, school, whatever). Does it work?
If not exchange only the wall adapter (for another asus original one if possible) and start over.
If nothing changes, get back to your wall charger, change the USB charging cable and start again.
If nothing changes, change wall adapter + cable and start again.
Remember... The TF will only charge with the asus wall adapter and cable or a specific charger. If you try to use your computer's USB or a wall adapter from a phone / generic USB device you won't get any charge at all, and will only trickle charge when the TF is off.

Sounds like there is an issue that the charger is not recognizing that an Eee Pad is attached. Might be time for a new charger.

Hello all, I have the exact same problem. I received my Asus TF101 for Christmas last year. Then later I found out that you need it root it in order to upgrade the OS. I rooted my TF, then I upgrade it the OS from Honeycomb(4.0.3) to Jellybean(4.1.2), (4.2.2) A month later after upgrading the OS my battery drain faster and I can only charge the battery with my TF turned off. If I plugged the the charger while its on it, the battery says its not charging. I change the wall wart and the cable but the issue still persist. Please help!!!

Is the new wall wart you are using a genuine Asus wall wart? If it is just a tablet USB charger, that will not work as the TF101 needs 15 VDC to charge instead of the standard 5 VDC of USB. The Asus wall wart auto-detects and switches between the two voltages to allow it to be used for other devices as well.

ASUS Transformer Wont Charge :(

Hi
My transformer tablet wont charge any more after installing this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514658
And it only will charge if the tablet is off, is there any solution to this problem ?
I already changed rom but it wont work.
Greatings
Marcel
How do you charge it: via USB or from the charger?
I have this problem.I use the wall charger as I'm sure he does. this seems to be an issue with pics. please help
I charge it with the asus 15v charger,
the cable is ok, becose it will charge when my device is offline, turning back the rom to an older one wont help ether
again, I have issue. I flashed EOS nightly though. I noticed that the boot loader version when doing the two fingr salute is we version 9. ...blah blah. I wonder if that is the issue.
can we change the boot loader version back to something different. I've seen others with the issue after upgrading to ics
please post if having this issue.
and post if a solution please
I think i got a solution,
Thanks for dangambino putting me in that direction, the revolver have custom firmwares for booting i changed mine.
I am gonna re image my tablet than change the firmware to original and post my findings.
Be right back .....
lemme know please.
---------- Post added at 08:11 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:51 AM ----------
any luck. please tell
No luck i changed it and it wont work
did u flash revolver update 1.3.1. also does urs charge really slow while turned off?
yes it charge very slow, but i just flashed original asus rom no luck
try to flash hc asus from. maybe?
try the Asus transformer forum. there's some good inf in there and a whole thread on this topic
www.transformerforums.com/forum/asu.../16918-only-charges-while-off.html#post145210
any news on your end?
I think the charger crapped out
iMy tablet would only charge when off after flashing an ics rom. After much research and near nervous breakdown, I did a lot of research. Mostly on asustransformerforum where there is an extensive thread about this. Since it would charge, just when off, clearly it wasn't the device, firmware (cuz if flashed different roms) or the cable.
With help from the aforementioned forum, I realizd it was the charging brick.
I went to best buy and got a dynex universal camera and camcorder charger that is adjustable to 11.0 v, which is the minimum that the tab will recognize while on.
It is now charging. Charger was 30$
THE FIX !
Ok Here is what you need to do:
1. install ics
2. REMOVE YOUR POWER CORD!
2. reboot 2 times
3. DO NOT HARD RESET YOUR DEVICE !!!!
4. Go to Settings __> Backup & Reset --> Tap Factory data reset
5. when done inset POWER CORD
6. IT IS FIXED !
The problem returns if you restart the device, the strange thing is after a reset it is ok again.
I think it's not up to ICS, but the charger, and I sometimes have the same problem but on the HC, usually solve it by removing the charger from the socket on the half hour and then return it.
sorry for my bad English

There is no such thing as a 40 pin usb cable. The ASUS cable has a unique connector on the TF end and a standard USB 3.0 connector on the other end, BUT the cable is not USB 3.0 compliant. The +5V and ground pins in the USB connector are used for power and ground. The +5V pin has +5V on it when plugged into a USB host device ( ie PC or laptop) Pin 7 of the USB is connected to ground when plugged into the TF this signal is sensed by the ASUS power brick to switch the voltage in the +5V pin to about 15V. A standard USB power brick always outputs +5V which is not enough to charge the battery and run the TF. It will charge a TF if off if you want to wait 30+ hours. Again not that ASUS uses a USB connector but is is only partially wired as a USB complaint cable.
My TF101 wouldn't charge last night so i started following this guide http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...6-rs-guide-so-your-transformer-wont-boot.html
None of the steps worked so I figured I'd buy a new charger from Microcenter for $30. That worked!
I thought it had something to do with flashing the latest nightly from Team EOS, but in reality it was just the charger.
The new charger appears to different than the original one that came with my B50 TF101. The cable seems longer and the prongs that plug into the wall socket don't fold up into the charger brick, also seem sturdier.
$30 fix from Microcenter saved me. Link http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0367050
:/
I've tried everything posted on the forums.
From Freezing the wall adaptor to Factory Reseting.
When i do plug it into the wall adaptor or my PC, the screen itself turns on, but no thunder bolt icon appears (charging icon).
I connect it to my xbox 360 and with the screen off (Asus Transformer TF101 ON) it charges but at a slow rate. (Still doesn't show Thunder Bolt).
Any suggestions? Don't really want to waste money on a new charger, unless the Brick itslef is the problem. The Tablet as of now is at 49%.
I read on a different site that when it went into a low battery state it wouldn't charge, but that usually was around 16%.
-Regards.

Transformer does not charge anymore

First of all: Yes, I did use the search function. Yes, I did use google. But No, I did not find an answer to my problem.
Hopefully you guys can help me:
I bought a TF101 a week ago - it is used and came without the charger nor a data-cable.
So I bought an datacable off amazon which worked fine. But as we all know a usb port has not enough power to charge the tablet.
After looking around the Internet I build myself an molex to usb adapter which worked like a charm.
But now I plugged in the cable and it's not charging anymore. (8h ago it worked fine)
The cable is fine (PC can still connect to the transformer).
The adapter is fine (multimeter is giving out 11.56V)
Now when I plug in the cable it gives me a picture of a nearly empty battery.
I tried resetting the tablet - no effect.
Anyone knows this problem? Or has an idea how to fix it?
Transformer details:
TF101-1B032A
Android 4.0.3
Kernel 2.6.39.4 [email protected] #1
Build number: IML74K.WW_epad-9.2.1.24-20120503
I think you should first bought the Asus original charger instead which guaranteed supplying 100% correct voltages and ampere to your tablet. Does it charge via PC USB port now?
11.56V isn't enough to trip the HV charge, you need at Least 12V.
Try the ASUS charger.

And the only way to confirmed this is by plugging the TF to PC via USB port and see if it still charging, or try the original Asus charger.
Using another adaptor with rating voltage safe to our TF doesn't guarantee it fit to the TF after all. There's always fluctuation in between the incoming and outgoing supply, and the transformer seemed to be a little sensitive to this tiny changes..

The cable could be faulty.
Mines was - and yes the pc still recognised the tablet when connected. Theres 4 pins in it compare to the usual 3 (i may stand corrected on that 1)
RMA confirmed this and Asus sent a new sync cable back.
Its maybe going to cost a few quid but as the rest of the guys have said - get an origional charger and cable.
Ok, first of all thank you for your help.
I would have bought a original Charger but could not find any in local stores nor amazon (.de) exept a traveller set which costs around 40€ (which is too way much)
I plugged the transformer (turned off) in my IPod wallcharger (5V1A) overnight and it charged.
Now I am really confused - why is it charging over the lower voltage output but not over the 12V?
//Edit:
Thanks to (the) Thing o Doom
I tried pluging the adapter to another powersource and it works. (I feel stupid to not tried this earlier) Seems like my mobile molex power supply is not fully working.

It's the build in power protection preventing your TF from catching fire from over fluctuation voltages supply. In ASUS original charger, it maintain the right amount of output even with uneven input supply. And the ipod charger has it as well..

[Q] Won't charge

So I went to turn the screen on, noticed the battery was at 17%, then checked the battery info and it said it had been on battery for 3 days now (odd), so I tried to plug something else in the asus usb wall charger, didn't seem to be working, so I tried using my nook usb wall charger with the transformer (it was 2.0amp output i think), the transformer still wouldn't charge. Tried plugging it into another wall outlet, another house, a car, still won't charge. tried changing cables, did nothing. even tried changing the rom. was on paranoidandroid, then put back on cm10.
I didn't try changing the recovery (using TWRP) figured that wouldn't affect anything. When I turn the device off it does charge, but goes up by 1% every hour, or even less.
So I'm at a dead end on what is going on or what to do, anyone have any suggestions? I don't know if asus would still honor the warranty since I have it rooted or not.
Did you try wiping battery stats from CWM? If it comes to that, you can flash back to stock and Asus would be none the wiser.

Well like my original post says, I'm using TWRP and not CWM... but I'll have to reinstall CWM because TWRP sucks in terms of features. Doesn't even have that battery wipe option. I'm going to try to install CWM and try that but my battery is very low now (6%.)
As soon as I reinstalled CWM the device now says "charging" but it still won't charge. Device is at 3% battery now, lock screen says charging, but the status bar says not charging. Even tried wiping battery stats.

I have good news AND bad news. The good news is: You're not alone cause I have the exact same problem and it's not your software, cwm or rom. The bad news is: it's your usb cable. As described in this excellent thread, the TF101 needs at least 11v to charge. The wall charger by default charges with 5v, unless there is a 15v cable plugged in like usb3 cable which will short so the charger will know what's attached. Then it will give a 15v charge and the tab will charge. Unless your usb cable is broken, like mine. I've attached a pic of my usb cable, where the yellow wire has come loose and the circuit is broken. The charger will only charge with 5v and the only when the tab is turned off. For the fun of it I will try to solder it, but the easier (and much less frustrating) way is to buy a new one on ebay for a mere 4 dollar. Bought mine today, so I hope it will ship soon. Good luck!

Thanks for the information, I didn't realize the asus usb wall charger was rated at 15v = 1.2a, because here all this time i thought it was the amps that made the difference. Also I did had two asus usb cables. I plugged back in the original asus usb wall charger and the device says charging by ac now.
So I have confirmed my problem was when I flashed the TWRP recovery, for some reason it wasn't allowing the device to charge correctly, the CWM recovery works fine.

[ KatKiss-KitKat #019 ]Battery not charging?

Hello.
Yesterday I upgraded from KatKiss #018 to #019. Up to now #018 had worked perfectly, but today with #019 I noticed that when plugging in my charger (I don't have the dock), I didn't get the little 'flash' sign on the battery notification; going into the settings to look at battery usage, I noticed that i said 'Battery not charging' even though I had left the charger plugged in.
I unplugged the charger, turned off the tablet, and replugged the charger, and the tablet turned on, which it does when plugging in the charger and being off.
Has anybody had this problem? Is it really charging but not notifying it? If not, what can I do besides reflashing?
Thanks!
me too

No problems for me and most people I guess otherwise they would stay away from the rom if it was not charging
Try to power off completely your tablet, then cold boot.
Try to change cable, try to test with another charger.
If that doesn't help do a full wipe and a clean install and test again before reinstalling anything else on your tablet.
if that still doesn't help, follow the procedure to report an issue in my signature, I'm not psychic.
Hello.
I have a problem related to the battery as well. Ever since I flashed to #19, my tablet and dock battery seem to run dry very quickly in sleep mode. I have come home from work to occasionally find the tablet unable to boot (it had a dock charge of no greater than 75% and a tablet charge of 100%) and when I plug the charger into the dock and then boot it, I find both batteries have next to no charge.
This is only on timduru's KK#19. I never saw this problem on #18 and below, or any of the previous 'droid versions (4.3.1_029 or 4.2.2_226).
I am currently letting the tablet's battery run to empty and then I will be charging the dock and tablet separately, but this is the first time I've ever encountered this problem.
okay

Did you try another ROM? I'm on #20 and I think I have (mentionable) more battery life. Not charging issues. Guess the fresh installment / wipe helped or an energy eater didn't survive the reinstall. Also I could observe two things (which I don't know of if they are related): Sometimes when the tab was docked it didn't charge. Second the the tab hat a battery problem. When docked and in sleep -> Dock empty next morning. I controlled this with Juice defender but weren't able to locate the problem in an app. This is now gone.
From my experience: I bought 2 power cable for the TF101 (only cable). One works as USB cable with no loading feature (not on USB 3.0 nor on the wallcharger). The other one works as USB connection cable and as wall charger. I can extend the original cable with USB to USB cable to transfer data and charge. I can't get any of that both two (CHEAP) cables to load extended or trasfer data. The two cables I bought at ebay were diffrent vendors. One for ~2,50€ the other for ~4€. If I remember right the original cable where much much more. What I want to say: There are huge diffrences in USB cables. Dunno. It would be a strange accident that the charger or cable broke when / while you intalled a ROM. Could it be that the "intelligent" battery stats are broken somehow? So they think the battery is full and therefor not charge? Or would the icon / indicator then show 100%? Does the icon get its information from the same source (or directly from) as the android battery management?
(ps: 12 hours for 35%=! ROFL!?? What charger is that?)

if it takes that much time even when it's off, it means that it's only charging at 5V.
Also at 5V it won't charge unless the screen is off if I remember well.
There's a special pin/connection made in the cable for the charger to detect that it's a Transformer plugged that will make it charge at 12+V
There's most likely a pin/ contact broken either in your cable / charger /tab, that prevents it to charge at high voltage.

So you say you go with option #3 then because u already did option 2, right? Quote Tim on option 2: "Try to change cable, try to test with another charger.".
So you have 2 x THIS and 2 x THIS? Because that would mean, what Tim suggested I guess. As far as I know this is the only way ASUS shipps the original TF101.
I'm asking because most people that I know would buy another noname charger or even just a noname cable instead of horribly expensive original pieces. If you really got the 2 x 2 pieces shown above,
then I'd guess wether your tablet is broken or the software on it is broken. But again: Did the charging problem REALLY firstly appeared when intalled the ROM? Or did you install the ROM because of the
fault? Or don't you exactly know.
To point out again: It would be a strange coincidence, that both cables AND adapters would stop working exacly at the same time when u installed #19. If you use 2 different cables at the same adapter: Then it's possible that the adapter is broken and only gives the USB (5V) loading speed. If you use 2 adapters and 2 cables and tryed all combinations: The most likely something with the tab isn't cool. The software or the hardware...

Precisely what I meant.
Cheers.
I have loaded #29, and I started seeing this issue immediately. It was fine before that. After loading the ROM, it would only charge when TF is dead. I have the original charger and cable that came with it which was working fine before the upgrade. So, I don't suspect either of them.

I was going with #29 and #30. Havent seen or heard about any loading issues but that was related to loading the tab on an USB port ... What actually is an bad idea even on USB3.0.

[Q] tf700t and dock charging problems

I have searched through the forum and tried all suggestions found, attempted to charge using a wallwart (known to be good) and USB (cable known to be good). Some background: last fall I was trying to flash the ROM and it got stuck in a boot loop. As I was visiting my wife in Taiwan (she teaches at a university there), I decided to take it to ASUS to have it looked at. They diagnosed a bad motherboard and replaced it, but not in time for me to take it home. It could not be shipped back because of the expense of shipping a lithium battery powered product was $$$$$. She brought it back with her and the battery showed as 80% charged (but the dock was out of juice).
I attempted to charge it normally, and nothing would charge, the tablet kept losing charge. I then attempted to charge just the tablet with the wall wart, and it would not charge. I tried a cold boot- no change. I tried turning off the tablet and charging it via the usb port of my powerbook overnight, and it did charge (not completely) and I then tried to finish charging it with the wall wart. It would not take a further charge. I am now attempting to bring it to a full charge via the usb port.
I tried charging the keyboard/dock via the usb port of the powerbook overnight, and it did not seem to charge. The keyboard will input to the tablet when connected, though, but there is no indication that the dock battery is active at all.
At this point, I am at a loss as to how to proceed. I suspect that the battery died for lack of a charge for such a long time (end of November to January 12) and that it must be replaced, but I am eager for some feedback from more experienced hands.
I also want to get it up and running on lollipop, but that will have to wait until this is resolved.
TIA!

So they charged it at the repair facility?

Wallwart: How do you know it is good? Is it original Asus? Most usb chargers put out 5v, this tablet needs 15v. If you charge via PC USB port it's 5v, called a trickle charge and takes forever. Not even LEDs come on although it charges very slowly.
I suspect the wallwart or - if the cable is not original - the USB cable (even if it works with other devices).

"No indication" meaning you do not see the dock battery icon in the notification bar?
By design the tablet gets charged first, then the dock battery. If you do this at 5V, you'll wait 'til kingdom comes...

Take the combo to a store, ask them to use a original Asus charger. The dock battery may be busted, but my money is on the wallwart.
Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it!

I charged my phone with it (iPhone 5, charged fully in the normal amount of time. I have a multimeter if that would help. I tried 2 different usb cables, both of which worked with the tablet for a slow charge via usb

Correct, I saw only one battery indicator, which, seems like it is the tablet, as the same data appears undocked

I see little point in that, under the circumstances. I have charged the table 100% via the usb cable, I will see if it now accepts a charge from the wallwart.

It won't. Not from a wallwart for an iPhone. You need a charger that outputs 15v.
If your battery icon doesn't show (even if it's empty) you either have a problem in the dock connector or the battery is totally dead. I think you'll find instructions to replace it on ifixit.com

the wallwart was the Asus one that I charged the iphone with (not the iphone one), that is how I tested it. the iphone supposedly draws 12W, BTW
