Why did everyone suddenly abandon ship? - Thunderbolt General

It's frustrating hearing all the fuss over the Mecha yet HTC doesn't even want to support their device. Sad really, especially if you can't afford another device

I honestly believe the reason the Mecha didn't get the update was due to Verizon, not HTC. I think HTC took the time to make the update, then it went to Verizon's metaphorical desk and sat there. If Verizon can convince existing members to upgrade, they will do it. The more your software gets updated, the less money they make. Stupid, greedy, marketing ploy in my opinion.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about? I've run several ICS ROMs and there's really nothing to get excited about.
One important note, ICS will come (if and when it does come) with Sense 3.6 which is almost exactly the same as Sense 3.5 in the Eternity ROM and the BAMF ROM. Sense 4.x is a big change but ICS won't include it for the T'bolt(due maybe to insufficient memory?) In short, you won't see much difference.
My phone works just fine, it does everything I ask it to do and does it well.
FWIW, I'm running a Gingerbread ROM, Virus' excellent Eternity 8-4 and I'm staying with it, even after ICS is released, unless it's updated to some of the ICS features AND Sense 4.x!

I think the timing of people "abandoning ship" has as much to do with contracts coming up than anything else. That said, the lack of ongoing support for what HTC and Verizon positioned as the performance leader (at least at the time, and certainly as its first LTE phone) is what many are voicing frustration about. Combine that with technology consumers' typical desire to have what is "latest and greatest" and it isn't surprising that folks are looking at alternatives like DNA, S3, Note, N4, etc.
Me... I am happy enough with a stable phone that browses, gets and sends emails, and gets through a full day and evening on a charge. Sure, I'd like better battery life. More so, a better screen (bigger, brighter, sharper). Like a thinner form factor that is lighter. Would really like it to be able to display to a TV easily too. But a famous bike designer named Keith Bontrager had a famous saying when people came to him with requests for the "perfect" bike... "Strong. Light. Cheap. Pick Two." I suspect we will always being looking for the perfect phone and be forced to make our choice based on what is most important (and compromise on what we can do without).
btw, I have tried at least one of the ICS ROMs. And while it was a very good ROM through great work by the designer, the fact that they are all based on the same leak seems to limit what can be done or expected with them, and so those phones with ICS (or better yet, Jelly Bean) will always seem better. I can't afford a new phone now anyway... so hopefully when I can the newer phones will be closer to my ideal of perfect is.

The big deal for me is compatibility. More and more apps these days are requiring 4.0 and up. But really, I only ran the ICS Sense builds once and hated them - horrible battery drain, lag, etc. I've been running AOSP builds since they had working data as a DD, and even with the bugs, these ROMs perform better, IMHO than the AOSP GB ROMs did.

I'm selling my gs3 and getting the tbolt again. The gs3 is nice but too much for me. I could use the money anyway. I personally love the thunderbolt.

I will be voting with my dollars, and loudly telling Verizon that their behavior regarding the Thunderbolt has been unacceptable.
I will be leaving them ASAP, and encouraging as many people as possible to defect, depriving VZW of cash flow. It's a tiny amount, but hopefully disgruntled former customers will make their voices heard.
I was skeptical about returning to VZW for the Thunderbolt. Their betrayal has me convinced that I was right to mistrust Verizon.
Never again. Bastards.

Want to take advantage of Verizon's excellent network (no comparison in my area) for pennies on the dollar of what they charge? Page plus is a reseller that piggybacks on Verizons network. You can tell VZW to go f__k themselves permanently (with my light usage I went from $90 a month on verizon to $12 a month on page plus) and only had to send in my TBolt for some non rom flash thing that they had back to me in less than a week. I cancelled my VZW plan and paid the $250 penalty and have already recouped my costs. I was even able to keep the same number I had with Verizon. The only disadvantages are no LTE (lol on Thunderbolt no 30 min handwarmer) and their maximum data plan is 2 gig data a month. Truly not a shill and would keep this to myself so deal doesn't change in future but the whole VZW TBolt thing has p_ssed me off.

Yeah this has left a bad taste in my mouth for non nexus phones, but unfortunately verizon is the only real option for my area.

Page plus cellular uses VZW network for a lot lower bills so they are an option where ever VZW is as long as you don't need LTE.

I agree that twisted's ICS rom works very well. I have been using it now since it came out. It is very responsive and works 100%. Also there is constant support for it updates are always coming out.

I got tired of no one else creating ROMs for us so I am working on my own right now. Testing the waters on battery life first before I move on to theming and other customizations.
Not going anywhere with this phone. Works too well.

Also, you guys made me appreciate what we've got, thank you

I also love my TB and I have compared it to other phones. This is my first Android phone but I've had experience with the DROID 2 and the SGS3. I do love the S3's bigger screen however but even after I get another phone I will be keeping this phone.

Twisted's (credit also to liquid) rom does rule and makes continuing to the use the TBolt viable for at least some time. The ICS leak and derivatives are not ready to be dd imho plus sense sucks. I don't want to blow $300 (screw contracts) on another phone any time soon so nothing but props to Twisted.

Who needs froyo?

After a month of a stock captivate, my first android (was a crackberry addict), I rooted it then the next day installed my first ROM Firefly 1.5. I loved it, worked great with very few bugs then two days later I updated to 2.0.5 and have been running it for three days, it's even better. Once I got over the fact I could make a plastic brick I have started having fun, next up for a flash is Serendipity.
So with all these great hot rod ROM's why would I even want stock froyo?
Thank you XDA.
U are right I was running darky's 8.0.1
nani17
Ya at this point I don't really care.the only thing will be better source for the roms. I used to love perception and cognition but I have found my battery is loads better with firefly
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I think for most people it's two main things. First, all of our current ROMs are using source from a different phone. Some are other Captivates from other parts of the world or they use the I9000 as a base. I think alot of people would like to be able to use our own Captivate source to start from.
The second, and really the biggest issue for me, is that it simply hasn't been released yet. At this point I definately would NOT update to it but the fact that Samsung and AT&T haven't bothered to release Froyo really Pi$$es me off. I paid alot of money for this phone. I'd like to see some support for it. Especially since this "was" their flagship phone.
But did you buy the phone solely for the release of froyo? I bought the phone for what it was, like I have bought every phone, not for updates down the road that I didn't know about. After coming from Blackberry I love being able to play with anything and everything I want. Although if ATT does release froyo to us will it be that much different than what was released in Canada? Will any future ROM's have a better starting point?

Quite frankly yes, my thinking they would quickly upgrade to Froyo was a big motivator to buy the Captivate. Certainly not the only reason but it was a consideration. Remember, when this was released they were teling us September to November for Froyo, all unofficial of course.
I'm more upset about the lack of support. They have a major issue, the GPS, that they haven't fixed with ANY update. They've had a phone out for 7+ months and they haven't released and update for 5 months.
Again, at this point I don't particularly care. But it will definately be something I consider when I upgrade my phone next time.
Same Here. I got the captivate just because of Super AMOLED screen and Froyo. FROYO is the minimum requirement to have Skype working in Galaxy S device. I guess I would just stick to the iOS device because it supports two Bluetooth headsets, keyboards, Skype video call, very intuitive copy and paste including the web format and pictures. ANDROID still has a lot to catch up.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Did I buy it for Froyo? No. BUT a big reason I did choose it over othrr options is that soon it would have the ability to run flash. Guess what. It still doesn't. When my contract expires I'll be saying farewell to ATT & Samsung.
I settled for the best ATT had since they chose to invest in Windows Mobile and iPhone while ignoring Android and the rest of the family was still under contract. I paid new phone prices and ended up with a used phone when mine wouldn't stay turned on. Traded a phone that wouldn't stay on for one that the GPS doesn't work. Been jerked around by BOTH companies while trying to get the trouble fixed. In the mean time I got locked into a contract. I've been with ATT since they bought out Cingular here, and had Cingular because they had the best coverage. But coverage is meaningless if the phone doesn't work. I'll move to Verizon and it has nothing to do with the iPhone.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Is Verizon any better though? I've been with Cingular/ATT for 10+ years and have had very few problems but had thought about switching to Verizon which seems like the only other viable network but ATT coverage has been great in Texas. I guess what I'm really saying is that anything beats a Blackberry Curve.
What todo?
Is Verizon any better though? If Verizon expects to sell >25,000,000 iphones in 2011, IMO stay with AT&T I got my first AT&T phone in 1983
I can agree to a point. Alot of users say we need the source. But i bet maybe a handfull of "devs" know what to do with it lol.
Just my opnion though.
I didn't buy my Captivate specifically for 2.2 but now that I have it on there it is quite an improvement. I have never put a custom rom on it so I can't compare to those but it is faster than 2.1 was.
If I never got the update I don't think I would be all that upset though because the cappy is a huge upgrade from my old htc Dream on 1.6. Also I never really had lag and my gps would always lock in 2.1 so it wasnt the huge upgrade for me that it would be for others.

Coming from 10+ yrs of Nokia and symbian...my wishlist would be an unlocked, unbranded android device so we don't have to rely on the operator...The Captivate is the first subsidized device I've bought in a long time and probably the last. I'm not interested in flashing a custom rom on a subsidized phone. Hopefully there will be some availability in the near future of just a plain jane unlocked unbranded android phone and screw the operators of the world.
I have fun flashing custom roms............but...........my phone dont like them. I could be talking on the phone and all of a sudden I get a weird noise and the call drops. I tried numerous roms, kernals, and modems and they all do it. I wouldnt mind 2.1 if the data was faster and there was a mobile ap like the custom roms have.

There's apps that support tethering for stock builds, as far as data goes, dl speeds should be comparable to customer roms, uploads speeds is where you see the difference if you're using HSUPA. Try forcing 850 or 1900 bands using SGS tools.
As as needing Froyo, meh!
I guess having the source is good but how much better is it really going to be? There are lots of stable/fast builds already off of official i9000 roms. I'm sooo over Froyo. Where's Gingerbread

What's the big deal with mobile AP? I used a Nokia device on Symbian for years with Joiku hotspot and used it occasionally at best. Granted it worked fine when needed, but it would amount to about 1 day/year with all the wifi out there nowadays

Samsung did release GPSRestore in the market to "fix" the GPS issue, but it only restores the settings and doesn't correct the software issue. Nonetheless it is an attempted "fix".

The Rage Thread

Seriously, who's in charge of the stock theming for our Charges? Who's decision was it to release a good phone on the market with a POOP BROWN COLOR SCHEME?! They should be fired!
And why does the battery life SUCK on this phone?! Why is it that we have to painstakingly calibrate the battery ourselves just to squeeze a days worth out of it? Samsung, I know you're trying to keep the costs down, but would it kill you to put a Li-Po battery in here or something?
Why does my 4G randomly drop to 3G, and then to 1X? Granted, somehow I've been seeing a lot less of this lately, but why did you let it happen in the first place?! Come on, that didn't happen to you ONCE during beta testing, Sammy?
Who's the joker who put so little ram into this phone? I bet when they designed it they were like "oh, this is going to screw so many people lol..."
And while I'm at it, I hate noobs. They don't even ATTEMPT to either look through the stickies or use the search.
Other than that, I am truly happy with this phone. I made the right decision when I upgraded.
I feel better after that rant; Feel free to vent some steam about your Charge in this thread; you therapist called, and he wants you to.

1. Totally agree
2. meh, YMMV, maybe it is because I am coming from the fasicinate (I carried 2 extra batteries around to make it through 12 hours but I love the battery life on this puppy
3. I have rock solid 4G, very rarely does it go to 3G here in town. During testing I am sure they have their own tower they are sitting next to,
I love this phone but I too cannot stand the brown/orange theme. Is there any way to change it?
Regarding all android smartphones:
1. What happened to having dedicated Dial and End keys on our *phones*? I'd use that a lot more than a search key.
2. Why can't we get good voice control that just works! My old flip phone did this better.
3. How hard would it be to make data connections work on demand? Take it a step further than juice defender (which doesn't work on our phone anyway). Let us control what apps access the network and when. In the meantime, stop waisting precious battery life keeping data connected "just in case".
4. Build in working app + data backup already. The average user shouldn't have to worry about rooting just for this. Plus they wouldn't lose angry birds progress every time a verizon rep asks them to factory reset. ;-)
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
OK, I'll join the rant....The dogs**t brown theme and the battery life are both items I can deal with. I just squint and buy extra batteries but the fact that my data connection is so dodgy drives me crazy! I am constantly getting "network error" msgs or just suddenly from solid 4G to absolutely no data without moving, watching everyone around me breezing along on the web. The fact that I can find myself in the center of Los Angeles and have no 4G, no 3G, no 1x, no data period is so pitiful.
Okay, I feel a little better.....
bn
No issues with any of that. Gummycharged GBE FTW!
(Ok, I do miss a notification LED)
Where the ****s the notification LED, they couldn't even put it on the dam galaxy S2! Let's hope the U.S. versions get it right.
I'll admit, the colors on TW3 suck some ween(well, TW3 in general sucks some ween) but apparently the brighter colors consume more battery because of the SA+ screen.
Battery life is alright.... IF YOU CALIBRATE & UNDERCLOCK. I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DO THAT! Still better then the 4 hour battery life on my enV Touch, and that wasn't even a smartphone.
FROYO? REALLY? FROYO? COME ON, IT'S A DAM $300 PHONE.
I DONT LIKE THE PUZZLE UNLOCK SCREEN. It doesn't show the battery % and I can't switch to silent from the same screen like AOSP, and why the hell does it need to say Verizon Wireless ON THE DAM LOCK SCREEN!? I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO FLASH SO MUCH **** JUST TO MAKE THIS PHONE GOOD.
Come on 4g, what the hell. I'm in a full 5 bar area and it still feels the need to drop to 3g. It's always happening when I'm browsing the web too, not when the phone is sleeping where 4g data wouldn't be necessary but when I'm ACTUALLY USING THE PHONE. 4G IS ****ING WITH ME.
and finally..... WHERE THE **** IS TW4. If this phone releases GB + TW4 + source then this phone will be ABSOLUTELY ****IN' FANTASTIC. It's funny, even with all the flaws this phone is still awesome. It would have been perfect if they just added/fixed the above things from the start. You're right, it does feel good to vent.

Exactly my point, we "the devs" should not be working hard to make this a fast phone or better/smoother it should already be that way out of the box or with upgrades after paying premium for this phone. Remember it's not 199 like all other phones, it is 299 one hundred more than the rest of all other phones from any carriers out there. That is really upsetting. I had the droid inc 2 (199 with 50 mail in rebate, so really 150)for one week before I got the charge and it was a great little phone with the best battery life i have ever had plus it had been upgraded to gingerbread already (thinking about switching back to it). The Droid X, X2, droid 3, are all 199 and running the latest, but we paid 299 for lte and samoled screen but got stuck with froyo. That is really upsetting. The (large) majority of smartphone users use their phones more for messaging and web usage than for voice calls. You're in a shrinking minority and it's simply in companies' best interests to cater to the majority of their users.
Its hard for me to relate here. I bought this phone because it is currently the easiest 4G LTE phone to customize. I never planned on keeping stock TW, and will never put it back on my phone, unless I sell it.
I could care less what samsung is doing, because we have plenty of great developers, that are doing way better.
I recommend anyone that hates the stock samsung experience flash a custom rom. You'll be a lot happier with this phone.

Well the Galaxy S line were samsung's flagship devices last year when they came out and it still took months and months even for official froyo (especially for the Fascinate) so just because the Charge is the latest and greatest from samsung (on verizon anyway) doesn't mean it'll get a ton of support out of the gate unfortunately... I know that 2.2 froyo was a huge improvement over 2.1 eclair so perhaps thats why it took so long, however 2.2 to gingerbread is not a major OS overhaul so hopefully that means we won't have to wait as long for 2.3 GB. I'd give it probably till the end of the year before we have GB and up to date source code.

I'd give it probably till the end of the year before we have GB and up to date source code.

I see what you are saying but at the same time if what you say here, by the end of the year we should have GB and source, is true then we will still not be up to date because ice cream sandwich will be out and we will still be playing catching up with os. I guess it's all part of sells, just make phones and market well and move on....ahh why did i fall in love with android lol

ICS from HTC later this year

according to facebook page
says for desire HD which is very similar to inspire right?
Yes it is. I'm sure once it's out for the Desire HD, all the devs that use that base (like Android Revolution HD) will be working on getting it to the Inspire. All we can do is wait.
The problem ATT took the inspire from there inventory so no ics for us...

S-OFF will solve all your worries. The Desire HD was a high-end phone for HTC, they won't abandon it for at least 2 years. The last version of ICS is probably where updates will end, or it might get a single update that will get it to Android 5.0. Any more is unreasonable.
I keep hearing that AT&T took it out of inventory, but when did that actually happen? I bought my inspire only 2 weeks ago, and while it was from a RadioShack, as a former employee I don't remember there stock ever being that far behind
Considering they just had a sale on the inspire I think they still have them

Any HTC ICS phone is needed.... We need Sence for ICS and that can be taken from any HTC phone.
just recently saw a bunch of ATT ads for buying the inspire or the infuse for 1 penny. Id love ics from htc, not because its worth a damn from them but because of what the devs here can do with that.
Making it seem like they pulled it from the inventory is probably just some marketing scheme. They make it seem like this phone is no longer available after the public wants it and them BAM! buy it for valentines day in the red color and for cheap too. If I was a person wanting a phone I'd jump on that. Its just a big game they are playing. And personally I don't care if ATT sends the update out or not. Thats why I came to this site. To get the most out of my phone and that means I can update it and not have to worry or wait for ATT lol cause we all know they aren't the fastest person in the race.

exactly. and as far as ICS goes, by the time it actually comes out we wont care anymore. same with GB by the time it was released we were way past that.
I personally DGAF about the HTC roms. They are always bloaty and generally slow. I try to use open sourced roms because I dislike proprietary software. Updates are few and far between, etc. sure sense looks good, but I'd rather go for the Android look anyway

Can we please beat this into our heads, because I'm getting frustrated having to scream this from high heaven to get anyone to listen.
HTC releasing an official ICS ROM for our phone is incredibly important because the kernel source and files will make running any ROM on our phones for ICS that much easier, it doesn't matter whether it's a Sense or AOSP ROM. All the bugs and glitches in any ICS ROM will be mostly fixed by kernel source and drivers.

Your right once the Source for the official version is posted all the issues with ICS right now will be gone. The kernel source will fix the camera issues and most of the other issues present in ICS roms that we all see right now. Take the camera. The Video recording bug will most likely not be fixed until the source is released from HTC. Then you will see most if not all roms move over to ICS

yup. This is the only reason I'm gunning for the official release also. My phone runs so much smoother without HTC sense. So does my fathers captivate without touchwiz. But we definitely need those essential functions such as proper camera.

The more probable explanation is that the phone is getting to end-of-life and they're looking to blow out inventory to lock in customers and hit their unit volume contractual commitment with HTC.
That's great news! It will not take long for the developers to mod that for the inspire.

good reason to get in financial position to buy phones outright and then not ever be locked into phone contracts (if only being out of x-yr contract would get a discounted rate)

Yeah, there's some wisdom to that. I used to do it that way myself for years with a Kaiser and HD2, but since I'm going to be needing a data plan anyway, and don't see a reason to switch from AT&T, I figure for my purposes it's hard to conjure a compelling reason to spend $500 or more on a phone if the carrier will subsidize me for what I was going to do anyway. :screwy:

Ugh. No kidding. I'm stuck with AT&T right now, and hate it. Even with the grandfathered data plan, they'll throttle you down to nearly dialup speeds if you use too much data within a billing cycle. If it weren't for the contact and having to pay that exorbitant freaking termination fee, I would've already told AT&T to piss up a rope and switched to Sprint.

Seriously, why is our phone so neglected?

Honestly, the A2 has great performance, it is not top of the line, but it is certainly pretty high end. It has a decent feel overall, but still know one knows about it. Why is this?!!? I'm not even talking strictly from a development standpoint, as it is just so unheard of. everyone knows about the whole droid line and such, but our great phone is completely neglected. There is no way i'm the only one that is bothered by this, especially because there is so much potential in our phone. I know the locked bootloader, makes things difficult, but a way around that is near, so do y'all think development will take off once we get it bypassed or unlocked? Thanks for listening to my rant and feel free to give your own opinion
Motorola or Att did not push this phone like they did with the original Atrix. Most people are going with samsung (sgs2 or the note). That is why we do not have very many devs. Samsung phone are much easier to work with. I know because i have one. If no one else decides to get this phone that's fine with me. I like the phone as is. Im also happy with the few devs we have. Their work is greatly appreciated.

Once cm9 or a form of ics gets calling and texting going then things will start to kick off. Right now with our limited amount of knowledgeable devs some have lost interest and are just sitting by waiting for Motorola to release ics.

you aren't the only one. It pisses me off. I always have service on this phone, for the most part it's fast and smooth, and the ROM support is becoming awesome. Yet still people don't know the name of my phone , they just know it's "big"

Actually, one of the orignal devs for this phone (been on it since it came out) has not lost interest but is working on kexec for our phone which is BY FAR more important than ICS... The possibilities are endless once we have a bootloader bypass.
Motorola did not advertise or really let ANYONE know that the phone was being released. For example, when I walked into the AT&T store with a $100 and a contract renewal, I just browsed/tried all of the phones they had in stock, and happend to like the feature set/performance of the Atrix 2 the best. The funny part is that I had NO idea that the phone actually came out the day before and was just put on display. Luckily the phone is great and the community to go along with it is even greater.
Honestly I'm on Supercharged right now, clocked around 1.25 GHz, and I can go higher, but my battery life sucks. I don't really care about the attention. We're getting ICS, and I'm hoping I don't have a good enough excuse to go back to stock until ICS is out. Then I'm going back to stock for sure. The speed is great, the lagginess and bloat on the stock rom just sucked, but so does my battery life now. It doesn't really take a whole lot to trim down a stock rom, I'm sure someone will do it for ICS if I don't myself.

Freezing apps does wonders for performance + battery life. I use Titanium Backup for this. All the "junk apps" that Motorola/AT&T installed (that I don't use) get frozen.
The End.
Some of our roms are great, but there are only 4 or 5 or something, it would be nice to see some of the big ones like cm7. hopefully an unlocked BL and ICS will spark some serious development. I think the biggest problem is the lack of serious developers. Who do we really have? Jimbridgman, lfabor06, and Rdavisct are the only ones I can really think of off the top of my head. We all play a role, but only the true genius' like them do a lot of good towards roms and things
To buy an Atrix 2, I had to special order it from Amazon. The local places didn't sell it because it didn't work with LTE in the area, and were mainly pushing iStuff.
Motorola needs to wake up and start tooting their own horn. The Atrix 2 has been an excellent phone, both in the reception department (better voice and call quality than my HTC and iPhone), CPU department, and in general usage.
Plus, there is an untapped market for these types of phones -- business people who just need a basic laptop where all their data is stored securely at one place, either on the phone with the on device encryption (or SD encryption), or using a Citrix receiver.

This really is the truth of the matter. Until we can load custom kernels on the A2, the devs are kinda limited on what they can modify. ICS with a locked bootloader is not much better than GB with a locked bootloader.
My wife has a Samsung Galaxy and the A2 is better in almost every area; reception, interface, speaker...

Current state of your g2x

Well as you all may know, LG claims korean devices will get ics. We have been holding our breathe for a long time, suprised we are not all dead yet. Regardless, what does everyone think about the g2x and the current development that is going on? I myself am quite frustrated with it. I can get jellybean to build but it is still very much broken, and I refuse to release something that turns my device into a paperweight. I will open source my stuff before too much longer, just to see what others can do, but I do not see many people, deving, modding or even themeing anymore.
I personally like my g2x it stomps my galaxy nexus in quadrants (which means nothing, I just like the big numbers) but it also seems to handle games alot better. I have been through 6 defective ones but, I still hang on to it. I have sold all my other devices besides my nexus and my g2x.
I am sure I got off on the wrong foot with some people, however everything I said came true. Certain teams claimed other teams work as their own and refused to submit their minute changes upstream as required by the gpl they claim protects their rebranded work and now all further development has stopped. The more people that work on something the better off the chances are for success but yea.....anywho
This is not intended to be a flame thread or an i told you so thread. This is intended to find out what everyone thinks of the current development and state of their phone. I want to know what the average user would like to see. What is everyone looking for besides the perfect jellybean/ics rom because none of them will be perfect untill LG gets off its ass.
Sold. Got a Galaxy Nexus enjoying a 100% working ROM of Jelleybean 4.1
I am getting a Samsung Galaxy III when I come back from vacation.

I don't mind if I don't get ICS, cm7 is stable as hell (using kameask or however you spell it), plus faux keeps up with kernels.
V6 super charger makes it twice as snappy, and testing out swapper again just to see.
But regardless, this phone does everything it needs to do at a very good pace. I don't mind if it doesn't get ICS . There isn't much benefit over it then what we have now.
I love the phone and the support from the community but despise the neglect from LG/nVidia. I was running different ROMs until I needed full bluetooth support on the v21y baseband so now I'm back on stock Gingerbread :-\
I bought this phone on contract with intentions of it being future proof and lasting the full 2 years. A year into my contract and the specs are still great on paper. A little bit more RAM would be nice but I can work with it. Just please LG, hook us up with ICS. I don't really want to cough up 400 bucks for a Galaxy Nexus...
I love my g2x...I have been messing around with Harsh's kernel for CM 7...(I even got a OC/UV version...hehe)...I thought about making a CM7 kang (with tweaks and what not)...or an AOSP GB ROM...but right now I'm in school...and debating if I should put the time and effort into development...I don't mind...I'm still learning about how kernels works...and would love to develop something (or at least help out) for our devices...
I like my g2x a lot. Bought it off eBay 7 months ago and have been impressed with the power this thing has. I am very distrought that we are 2 versions of android behind. Yes we have ICS but its not to the level of perfection I need and thus am still on GB. This is my 3rd android phone and I have never fallen this behind thanks to devs of xda.
I understand the driver/source code issues that are holding us back. If we can get a port of our Korean counterpart's ICS, then I will most likely just hold onto this phone for awhile longer.
My contract us up in 3 months and I could save money by going to a monthly plan. If we can't get fully functioning ICS though, I'll be hopping on the note 2. I'm getting the note 2 regardless, but would just like to wait till the right deal comes along instead of paying top dollar.

There are still some ports showing up, but I see 2 things being a barrier to more/better dev activity -
1) Driver availability. Both ICS and GB. ICS ROMs are stuck on things needing HW acceleration, for example. The Froyo camera is almost fully ported to 2.3+ but not exactly. JB - even more so.
2) In call BT audio for new BB. Even though we can flash to have custom ROMs work with v21y, this function is still not working. That is a big reason why I have quit flashing the past few months.
I do like the phone and will keep it until it breaks.

I don't attempt to run ics or jb roms anymore, they still seem unstable. But I am quite content with gb, though I still haven't found a rom+kernel that solves everything. Either it lags or I get SOD/overheating. So far I like cm7 nightlies best, don't know which kernel to go with though.
Galaxy Nexus is on it's way. My G2X is just too buggy, but I am going to keep it as a backup. Plus I want to go to an unsubsidized plan as the rates are much cheaper. For the same price I pay now I can get unlimited talk, text and data, plus hotspot (which I am not paying for now but have been warned that it will soon be an additional $15/month). I make back the cost of the GNEX in one year with the better service and reduced rate.

I like Kwes and BuruRom rooted stock in addition to Temasek's CM7. I've got my phone figured out. If/when (on CM7 based roms) data drops or MMS bugs cause me frustration, I just restore Nandroid back-ups of those rooted stock version(s). If I need to drive an HD movie out the HDMI port for my kids in the backseat, I have better results with Morfic's kernel/CM7. Yeah, the phone runs hot (gets unstable) when pushed hard. It still does all I ask of it - day in, day out. I plan to make it work till I am eligible to upgrade. I hope my replacement for my G2x won't need to be any bigger. I miss the days of being able to forget my cell phone is in my jeans pocket!
I am waiting for a new nexus phone to come out and i am going to buy that and ditch the g2x. I am still running Bionix Reloaded because it is the best rom I have found to date and I have no reason to switch. I tried some ICS roms but my battery died in a few hours and I barley got a data connection. I appreciate all of the hard work and development with the G2X but LG killed it by not releasing drivers. I find it really sad because the G2X is such a powerful phone. I think it is still competitive with current phones that are being released with the software being the only exception. I told myself I will never purchase a new phone unless it is a nexus phone due to the fact that they will get updates.
LG definitely lost my business for a long time.
Personally
I would love to develop for the G2x(I'm learning, but just barely) , but I can't see much that I am capable of doing right now. I'm gonna cook versions of CM7 and play with building kernels. We are in a holding pattern until the nVidia drivers come forward or the CM7 bluetooth thing gets resolved.
Going to keep the phone until at least Christmas, even later probably. My Nexus 7 has made my g2x have great battery life!
Sent from my paranoid Nexus 7.
Lol... I got my nexus 2 or 3 weeks ago and swore I would sell my g2x ( at one point I was contemplating having my friends form a firing line directly at the phone. Then sending the video to lg and nvidia, interrupted by Linus giving them the finger.) But I haven't. I really love the phone to be honest. I was lucky enough to get one without major screen bleed and it has only locked up on me twice (PC/UV kernels).. I'm seriously contemplating keeping it as a back up phone.
I do wish that nvidia and lg would hurry up with the update so I could play around with fully functioning jb Roms, but since I know nothing about coding, I'm no help.
I also notice fewer and fewer devs working on it. I hope they are just waiting for the drivers tho.
So all in all, I still have the phone, even though I have moved on.

Thanks for OP posing this topic. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the contributors in G2X sections, it has benefit me as a Wind Mobile customer in Canada.
I am am not looking for the next new Android OS, I just want a custom ROM that has little or no bloat-wear that is very stable and utilizes the phone's fullest potential. LG /or Wind Mobile has abandon the upgrade to our phone and it is stuck at 2.2.2. We screamed, we yelled, we petitioned and its not going any where. Therefore I will not buy/support any Korean manufactured phones in the future.
So, please keep up the good work.
Thank you,

Agreed, the devs here have done a wonderful job. Though I don't blame them for moving to another device.
I am running ics(hellfire sandwich) on g2x. Except the camera everything seems to work. Waiting for jellybean. I dont think i will change my phone atleast this year. All the games run well. I am dissapointed cuz we are being ignored by lg and nvidia.
