Verizon: pay for phone monthly? - General Questions and Answers

I know T-Mobile let's you break up phone purchases on your monthly bill while still being on contract. Basically paying retail for the phone, but having bit split up.
Does Verizon do this?
Thanks

I'm sure that you big red users would be all over this, but I seriously doubt it. If I can contact my friend who works for them I'll ask him.

Guess what I meant was installment payments for the phone so don't have to dish out $600 or $700 straight up

I knew exactly what you meant, and responded as such. I really doubt they do. Really only way to find out is to call or go in a store and ask.

This kind of defeats the purpose of going to Verizon to me. They have such ridiculously high prices for their services, the least they can do is subsidize the phones you get. Making you pay for the phone plus their service charges would be insane.
I'm hoping you're looking for a replacement before the 2-year upgrade cycle. If that's the case, why not just put it on a credit card or similar ? For big purchases like this, you can often get no-interest financing - bam, broken up into monthly payments, or you can pay more and get it done faster.
One reason I see Verizon not offering this is because T-Mobile's plans like that are basically unsecured loans - so they have people just walk out on them without paying. They can block the IMEI, but I think it's a pretty bad business move but maybe it works out for them somehow.

Upgrading through amazon

i'm on the grandfathered unlimited data plan and was trying to upgrade through amazon but there's no way to get through checkout without choosing one of the new tiered data plans. has anyone been able to get around this or know of a way to get with the amazon price without changing data plans?
Ha , that is funny. I considered using amazon but couldn't wait for my infuse. If that is the case why not just check out get it and drop the tether . Shouldn't be no biggy. Anyways , this infuse is sexy.you'll love it !

Amazon charged me a $250 Etf on top of At&'s Etf when I had to sell my Captivate and cancel my contract last year. So my Captivate cost me around $700 when it was all said and done. I'll never buy from Amazon again.

Personally, I wouldn't take a chance on losing it. I'd just go to a retail store to purchase it just to be safe. Having said that, if you just switch your SIM card from your existing device and do not activate the SIM card Amazon sends you, that MAY keep you on your existing data plan. This worked for me when upgrading my wife's phone from Best Buy online.

Yeah, it says that right on their site if you cancel within the first 6 mos. This is pretty common practice for most resellers.
All you have todoiscall art after you petit and tell them you grandfather in and they will change it. I've done this with Wal-Mart before.
Waiting for the 26th for my Infuse 4g.

Do you feel better about yourself now? I'll never understand the need some people have to try and prove themselves superior to others by cutting in and making statements like yours. I know it is on the site but I had lost my job and had a family to feed. I paid the fees later and settled up with At&t also. But if it makes you feel better....yes I'm just an idiot who never read my contract and has no reason to complain about paying $150 more than what the device was worth.

I agree with this 100%.
I wouldn't risk losing your G-pa data plan by buying from amazon and then calling AT&T to switch back. Big gamble to save $50 up front but lose hundreds of dollars in monthly data charges.
Also, I *heard* that AT&T is selling the phone on-contract for $149 (same as amazon) if you buy an accessory. But even if that's not the case (no pun intended), I personally wouldn't risk it.
Call ATT and tell them about it. They should be able to fix it back to the unlimited plan. Believe or not they are pretty good about that.

This is true but avoid doing anything that has to do with your plan and features on the web. Its a headache and they won't care about what fees come on your bill. Example: upgrade fee, activation fee. I see it everyday as i do the same work in a store.

Dont do that. I work for at&t and that's a gamble not worth taking. Re adding a unlimited data plan is extremely time consuming as well as job threatening if re added for trivial reasons such as so a customer can save 50 dollars by purchasing from an indirect retailer. Is 50 dollars worth potentially losing unlimited data? Probably not

Do you work for Corporate or a store?
Are you telling me that if i call ATT and explain that i could not choose the plan when i order the new phone but i want it fix once i receive my phone they wont help me?
You do know they can see all changes made to your plan. I am sure if you call them the same day you get your phone (a couple of days from the change) and explain the situation they will help you.
Worse thing, send the phone back to amazon and tell them to put your account back to how it was before. Go to a local place and get it there.

Woah man, I wasn't trying to put you down in any way. Sorry if you took it like that. You seemed pretty upset with Amazon for charging you the extra fee, and I was just pointing that they're not the only ones who do that. It's pretty standard practice unless you buy directly from AT&T, and I feel Amazon is more up front about it than most. That's why I was saying it's right on their site compared to a lot of places where you'll find it buried in the fine print. Again, didn't mean anything personal by it.

Square Trade Insurance

They are having a sale for the Galaxy S4.
$99 for a 2-year plan of you can pay $5.99 a month.
http://www.squaretrade.com/samsung-galaxy-warranty
Read the fine print - $99 deductible makes your insurance policy worth a total of $200, or, exactly what you paid for the phone (unless you got it at Walmart or Best Buy with the Phone Freedom)
Yes, I know that you're locked in for another 2 years and all that good stuff, but if you don't have a way of getting another phone on contract at any time, you should start looking in to that instead.... My point is, if you break the phone tomorrow, it will cost you the same price as if you pulled it from an on contract plan, but if you break it two or three months from now, it will be cheaper to get another on contract phone because that price is variable and will certainly drop compared to the Square Trade price that is fixed....
I was a huge fan of ST back in the day, but their prices now are just outrageous! A good case costs a max of what, 60 bucks? Sounds smarter than $99 plus whatever you're planning on getting already to protect the outside of the phone!

I did read it, and your post seems to assume people just have unlimited upgrades laying around, which is false for the vast majority of us.

I paid full price for mine $639 plus tax..
If you shatter the screen it's $99 to get it fixed with the insurance. Without insurance it's another $639 plus tax..
Sure you can add another line and get a new phone for $200.. Plus the added line of $10 a month, plus the added line smart phone data fee of $20 a month.. Adding another line will cost you $200 plus tax, plus $30 a month for 24 months..
Do the math over 2-years..
I will stick with Square Trade thank you very much..

Then maybe you should look into that instead of wasting money on an intangible, inflated insurance policy! I have a finite amount of upgrades to use too, but at least I can get another phone quickly without having spent $99 for potentially no reason ahead of time....
If you sleep better at night because of this insurance policy, then great - I have guns and hope I never have to use them either, on a similar note, haha

It's not a better suggestion.. It's a ridiculous suggestion IMHO..
Your idea:
$199 for a new line to replace broken phone.. $30 a month ($10 for added line and $20 for cheapest data plan) x 24 month contract = $720 plus the $199 for phone = $920 total cost..
-vs-
Full price phone $640
-vs-
Square trade plan $99 plus $99 deductible = $200
Ya your way is better!

Thanks for not wanting to *help* me understand how doing it your way will cost $920 and doing it the insurance way will cost $200..
Preciate that.. LOL
Also. I have a friend who went through 2 iPhones in a year because of shattered screens..
Doing it your way she would have spent $400 just for upgrades never mind the monthly cost associated with having 2 extra lines. Now we are talking $400 just for contract price phones. Add in the monthly add a line and data fees for 2 phones and for 2-years and your idea / plan is even more asinine..
With Square Trade she spent a total of $300..
Oh well... To each their own..
Heres a couple coupon codes if someone wants to save a few bucks on the plan $91 instead of $99.

gotta admit, I do not understand your method either. Can oyu explain it better? thanks
Re-purchasing the phone using an upgrade on your current plan will cost you no less than the ~$199 (cost of the phone) + $240 ($10 a month for add'l line w/ blocked data * 24 month contract) and you switching phones from that line to your original number. This is well above the cost to get a replacement through SquareTrade.
OR, are you referring to taking another family members' upgrade and therefore simply subsidizing your cost by pushing it into the future?

coincidentally I do have 2 extra lines with upgrades since I pay for my parents lines and they stick to dumbphones.

Squaretrade is loads cheaper than AT&T's $6.99/mo with $199 deductible.
My service with them has always been stellar, even when I call to complain and moan and cancel plans.

Well one thing that the att covers is theft.
Honestly, you get a extended warranty if you purchase your phone with a premium credit card. They will also pay for anything the manufacturer doesn't want to cover. That's 2 years.

You are right, ST doesn't cover theft. I didn't consider that.
I've never had a phone stolen (famous last words?) and that's because it is either in my hands or in my front pocket. I do this not only for theft reasons, but also for dropping reasons. Of the 27 smartphones I've owned in the last 3 years, I've only ever dropped one once.
The cost of the phone would be the least of my worries to a phone being stolen, honestly, I don't want some rando having copies of my music, pictures, and notes. Regardless of my having backups.
I will check out credit card coverage options, gotta put my 12 CC's to use somehow.

OK, so I work for ATT I'll just clarify this for you guys a little. This is what we reps have been told. Basically whatever the normal price plan is for the phone you add 1/20th of the phones price to that normal plan pricing. After 12 months minimum but before 20 months you can choose to trade in your old phone and get a new one. There are no down payments for either phone so there is that, you can get an iphone 5 64GB for no money down if you have good credit XD. BUT you would then pay an extra 40 some per month to make up for it. The average installments would be $20 with smartphones usually costing about 400 or more so after 12 months you would have paid $280 or more and if you sold your old phone you could buy a new one.
POINT: This is a blatant rip off, save up your money those months and sell the phone you save money, the price you pay for this simply gives ATT a larger profit, they will then resell the old phones you turn in which by the way have to be in perfect shape or there will be an additional charge for repairs. Anyone with sense will no do this.

FAQ
What is AT&T Next?
AT&T offers you another choice for smartphone and tablet pricing. AT&T Next is a new way for you to get a new device every year. You have the choice after 12 monthly payments to trade it in for a new device or choose to keep it, and after 20 months, there are no more installment payments. No down payment, activation, upgrade, or financing fees are required — only sales tax on the device is due at time of purchase.
How can I take advantage of AT&T Next?
Visit att.com or a participating AT&T Company Owned Retail location to learn more about AT&T Next and to find out if you are eligible.
Are there additional charges?
Sales tax is charged on your new phone or tablet at the time of sale. There's no down payment and no activation fee.
Is a contract required with AT&T Next?
AT&T Next requires that you sign an installment agreement to pay for the device over 20 monthly payments. If you cancel your wireless service, the remaining unpaid balance on the device is due. A Wireless Customer Service Agreement (voice and data service) is required.
How many AT&T Next installment plans may I have on my account?
There's a limit of two per account.
What devices are eligible for AT&T Next?
At this time, customers can buy a smartphone or tablet with AT&T Next.
Do I own the device? Or is this a leasing offer?
The device is yours and you’re responsible for 20 monthly payments. You’re also responsible for any loss, theft, or damage to the device — both during the installment agreement period and after. We recommend you purchase the optional Mobile Insurance to protect your investment.
How do I get a new device every year with the program?
After your twelfth (12) installment payment, but before your twentieth (20) installment payment, if your wireless account is in good standing you may trade in the device. The device must be fully functional and in good physical condition. Select a new smartphone or tablet and a new 20-month agreement will start.
When I trade in my device after 12 months and get a new one, what is the length of my new installment plan?
When you trade in your device, no further installments are billed for the original device. You will start over with a new 20-month installment plan on your new device.
Will I be able to pay off this device early?
Yes, you have the option to pay off your installment agreement, but the full outstanding balance will be due immediately.
What payments are due if I cancel AT&T Next?
The full outstanding balance on your installment agreement becomes due.
What if I don't want to trade in my device after 12 months and I want to keep it?
You have the choice to either trade your phone in or keep your phone. If you keep it, after 20 months, it’s yours and no more installment payments are required.
What if my phone is damaged (e.g. cracked screen)? Can I still trade it in after 12 months?
Yes. However, we reserve the right to charge a fee to repair the device and return it to fully functional and good physical condition.

This is a ripoff. Why is everyone trying to follow TMobile's BS? There's a reason why offer crap service.
I'm going to stick with my normal 2 year upgrades. AT&T has always offered me an early upgrade from 6 months-1year at the 2 year price. If that goes away and I have to put up with this BS, I'll be pissed.

Interesting... I called this when T-mobile started this. It is almost better to pay full price for phones now... If you sell your current phone 300-450 and put the rest on a credit card you will still be saving money or just pay it up front. But the cancel at any time is pretty cool idea
But this may lead us to buy unlocked devices and not deal with locked bootloaders....

Yeah, this sucks. I might just start paying full price and sell the old phone. Much easier.
some quick calculations
S4 is $32/month. Would have paid $384 in a year.
If I just bought a Galaxy S4 for $629. I could sell it in a year for ~$400, so $229.
or
use your upgrade. $149 is what I spent on my Galaxy S4. Sell it for $450 in the Fall, pick up GNote3 on CL, etc. $500-550. Only out about ~$100-150. Sell GNote3 in the Spring for $450-500 for GS5.

I think those things will die off slowly. But I doubt it will be right away
I'm curious to see what else they talk about at their keynote.
I would really like them to do what US Cellular did. They brought back Unlimited Data, but it's ONLY valid for the 2 year contract length. After that, it's gone. If you try to break your contract, the ETF is $$$$. Let them charge $40/month for it. Still worth it over Sprint/TMobile, IMO

I think it's nice for it to be an option. Myself, I just buy out of contract if given a choice. It's nice to offer this and the traditional plan so some people who cant afford a phone outright can get one.
All the carriers new deals are all including trading in smartphones as of late. Usually you get ripped off as you can sell it yourself for more $. Selling my year and a half old iPhone 4S almost paid for my S4 in full out of contract..
20 month = same as unlocked upfront
12 month and upgrade to newer phone = 60% of cost one year lease... what a ripoff
Well it is AT&T
AT&T users better read the fine print before rejoicing. You’re still paying the same high monthly contract price for your no-contract plan. AT&T is double dipping into your wallet when those contract monthly plans has a subsidized phone calculated into them but you’re paying full price for the phone.
AT&T Mobile No Contract.
$70/m unlimited talk.
$20/m unlimted text.
$30/m 3GB data plan.
$32/m Samsung S4 monthly payment Next program.
+$10/m device insurance.
——————————-
$162
Compare with T-Mobile, and the price you pay for unlimited talk, text, and true unlimited, you’re just paying for the talk unlimited portion on AT&T. Not to mention, the insurance is built into the Tmo Jump program.
T-Mobile
$50/m unlimited talk/text.
$20/m unlimited data plan.
$20/m Samsung S4 monthly payment.
$10/m Jump program (includes premium device insurance).
——————————-
$100/m
I guess Att thinks we can't do simple math.

Absolutely. Repost, Facebook, Tweet, Link, +1, etc. Maybe this will cause a Xbox One-like backlash.
What I hate the most is that the majority of the people on this forum are stuck with AT&T until 2015 :crying:
You guys do realize this is an OPTION right? They are not forcing you to take this deal. Verizon also has a deal starting like this one as well. At least att is not forcing those with unlimited data to lose it when they want an upgrade like big red does. Att has always given OPTIONS unlike other carriers who force things down your throat. Remember that when you start typing your rant about how att sucks.
Also when was anything perfect at launch? I'm sure as time goes on and voices are heard, this plan will get made to make more sense.

While it is an option, for now at least, so many people will fall for this scheme. People like my iPhone loving mother who is persuaded by "as seen on TV" adds will probably fall for this no matter what I say. Or teenage girls who beg their parents for the latest and greatest.
All they have to say is "NEW DEVICE EVERY YEAR". That's it. People will be overjoyed and they will make billions. Only our small subset of users will actually do the math.
Yeah att is simply bartering...if your selling something at a garage sale you always start with a high price and slowly lower until you reach an agrrement...att wants to make as much money as possible so they will start high and hopefully lower to find a price they still make profit and that people will go for...and as stated this plan is only a choice, we arent being forced to use the next plan

I have a $285 etf right now
Say I early upgrade to a s3 mini at $12/mo ($250 full price) with the next promo. I can just pay off the $250 and leave with no penalty? Cheaper than paying my etf and I can sell those phones as new because I wouldn't keep them.

[Q] Off Contract Advantage?

I am on the Sprint Network and will stay with them for a variety of reasons. I have always had a contract with them and upgraded whenever that opportunity presented itself. I am no longer on a contract and I'm considering a few options. The Note 3 (probably won't go that way due to problems on voice calls), The LG G2 or the Nexus 5. Advantage of the Nexus 5 is that it is off contract but if I am staying with Sprint anyway what advantage is there to being off contract? Sprint won't discount my monthly bill as far as I know so the off contract advantage has me a bit puzzled from the purely dollars and cents point of view. I'd be happy to hear views from others as to why this seems like a good idea. I'm leaning toward the LG G2 which will likely have a better camera and battery than the Nexus 5 and it's only $99 at Sprint with the 2 year contract. I'd go for the Nexus 5 at 399 for the 32GB model if it meant something off my monthly bill but I don't see Sprint giving me a discount just because I bought the Nexus 5 off contract. What am I missing?
I am in the exact same situation as you, except I bought a Note 3 and just returned it. If the Sprint Nexus 5 is available through google play, you buy that, use your upgrade towards an iphone 5s and sell it sealed. If the Nexus 5 winds up being only available through Sprint, then I'm not so sure what I'm going to do.
You can change your mind and leave whenever you want. And with the nexus you will be able to go to any carrier you want (except Verizon).
All in all, it gives you more options on what service provider you want. I would recommend seeing what offers the best service (data and calls) and pick that carrier or see if you can go prepaid. I know straight talk offers at&t and T-Mobile Sim cards and its like $51 a month after taxes for unlimited everything with 2.5 GB uncapped data.

Yes, I totally agree that there are A LOT of options. I've even thought about picking up Tmo @ $30/month, but I'm on Sero, only pay $50/month for unlimited everything, and my Sprint service has been fantastic since relocating to Orlando, FL. Oh decisions decisions

Trying to weigh my options as well.
My 2 year contract expired many months ago. I can buy the 16g Nexus 5 for $150 if I sign a new 2 year agreement, I can change to the Sprint One Up plan so I can be eligible for a new phone once a year (not sure pricing details), or I can buy through the Google Playstore for $350/$400. I have so many family members tied to the plan I am on I probably wouldn't switch carriers.
So if I bought through Google and in a year's time I wanted to switch phones I guess I could sell the Nexus 5 then use my upgrade to buy whatever phone I wanted. If I buy through Sprint, the upfront cost is cheaper, but I will have to wait a couple years if I want to switch phones.
Decisions, what do ya'll think?
For someone off-contract but that wants to stick with their post-paid account, the only advantage is flexibility. If coverage or financial conditions changed, you have the choice to be able to switch providers with no termination fees.
The only real exception to that would be the newer T-Mobile post-paid accounts where they do offer plans with lower base costs per month because they split off the phone subsidy, so if you bring your own phone you pay less since you aren't using a subsidy.
If you have a high degree of confidence you will be staying with your current contract provider and that other things like your financial situation will remain stable, I would say it makes more sense to just re-up with them and choose whatever phone you want from them. As far as which one, read some reviews and then try them out in-person at your local provider's store. Everyone has slightly different things they want out of phones, so without specific criteria it would be hard to say whether a Nexus 5 would still be the best phone for you.
I agree with you, flexibility is the main advantage of staying off contract. I've had an S3 for the last couple of years and am getting the itch to switch. If the HTC One came out today I would probably get that because I love the looks and build of it and I liked my original Evo, but it's so "old" now I want something newer - LG G2, Nexus 5 or some other upcoming phone.

It always amazes me how people would rather be in a contract that will require them to pay between $1-2,000 more over two years, instead of buying a phone outright and upfront, and save the money. Unless someone is too broke to afford a phone upfront... Of course if you can't afford a phone upfront, you likely can't afford a $100 monthly cell phone bill either.

Sure, but for people who only pay $50/month for essentially unlimited everything ( 1000 landline minutes, unlimited mobile minutes, texts, and data), subsidizing phones works in our favor.
We've been w/Sprint forever and have numerous phones on the account. I'm one of the ones who pays $50 for unlimited. I'm assuming I would continue to pay $50/month whether I bought a phone outright or through contract. I doubt if I bought a phone off contract my bill would be lower than $50/month.

Why i might remove jump on demand

I knew it was to good to be true... watch this video explaining jump on demand. All you are doing is basically renting. A phone. You actually never pay off your phone. If you own your phone for 18. Technically you should of paid the phone off. Well guess what with jump on demand you have to give the phone back or pay 200$ WTF?.... WHY SHOULDNT YOU BE ABLE TO KEEP YOUR PHONE IF YOU PAID THE BALANCE OF THE PHONE... i paid 400$ down and your telling me that in 18 months i have to pay extra 200$ a jote only comes every once a year..

Kind of pointless to have jump on demand if you aren't upgrading multiple times per year. If you are keeping the same phone for 18 months, better off without JOD.

As a T-Mobile Sales Associate, I have to chime in here. Jump On Demand is the leasing program. It is not a feature. So there's no "taking it off", because you signed a financial agreement for a lease. Now, the other thing to realize is that the phones are the EXACT same price regardless of which program you finance them through (Jump on Demand vs EIP), the primary difference is that with the 18 month lease, you're paying roughly the same monthly as you would for a 24 month EIP. I say roughly, because the taxes aren't paid up front on a lease, they're put on your bill each month with your device payment. At the end of that 18 months, there's roughly 6 months worth of payments left. You may either trade the phone in, let the remainder of the balance of the phone go into your monthly bill that month, come in and pay it, OR we changed this last week, you may break it up into payments on your bill. Also, as for the money you put down up front, I presume you were less than well qualified, because since this program launched in June, I have found *NO* way as a rep to take an additional down payment on a leased device. Less than well-qualified have a required down payment amount, but there has not been any way to change that. So if you are well qualified, or have been a customer long enough to be well-qualified, then you may have EIP'd your device on the original JUMP program (1 or 2, depending), cause with those you put the taxes down up front. That depends on where you live, of course, here it's 7%, and 7% of $700 is $49.

The total cost of the phone, plus tax, is divided by 24. That's what you pay monthly. If you own the phone for 18 months, you have not paid off the balance of the phone. You've paid the balance less 6 months. That 6 month balance becomes due, and you can own the phone. You don't pay anything more than the full balance.
Still, as many have said in other threads, the value of JOD is not for the person who keeps a phone for 18 months. It's for a person willing to continuously pay monthly to change phones 3 times a year.
I'm using the original Jump! with my Note 5. I did it with the Note 3, to Note 4, and now the Note 5. I don't plan on upgrading to a new phone before the next Note comes out, so I will have at least paid 50% of my balance to qualify for the next upgrade. And, if I choose not to upgrade to the next phone, I just keep paying the EIP and will own the phone when I'm done. At that point, I just keep the phone and start Jump again with a new phone when I'm ready to upgrade.

And unfortunately, corporate T-Mo has been forcing us at the retail level to put all new activations on Jump on Demand, and want to get as many people as possible off of JUMP 2 when they upgrade. I think ultimately they'd prefer not to have 2 different financing programs, but I could be wrong. Just remember... Jump on Demand is a lease. There's no "extra cost" for it. JUMP is a feature, $10/mo, that includes PHP, and can be added to your account as an option to upgrade your phone sooner by trading in your old phone that is on EIP. That's the most simplistic way to explain it.

I wish you luck. There's no way to change financial programs. Without returning the phone you have and repurchasing a new phone.

Okay. Just be ready for the $50 restocking fee. They're being particularly strict about these things. At least in our district, upper level management won't let our managers make an excuses for why to sell new JOD devices on EIP. People are getting slapped on the wrist over it.

Let me know how it works out. Curious to see how other districts are doing it. I wasn't for the whole JOD thing when it was announced, but when they changed the terms to allow you to break up the remaining amount into payments, I realized it's really not any different than EIP. The fact that we "own" the phone during the term of the lease isn't anything to worry about. It's your phone once it's paid off. So just give it some thought, because I'm pretty convinced this is the way the phone payment programs are going. The benefit is that it's $0 up front on JOD. Plus, on T-Mobile, getting a Note 5 right now on Jump On Demand, you get a $4/month bill credit for the term of the lease. That's a $72 credit over 18 months toward the phone.

With $380 down, that means your credit is lesser qualified. It's like financing a car, you put more down up front and the rest is broken up into monthly payments. Pay your T-Mobile bill on time each month for 12 months and you'll get $0 down after the 12th payment. Otherwise, it takes 3 years tenure to be well-qualified for $0 down.

As long as your phone has the stupid T-Mobile unlock app, then only the code from TMO will work. For Jump On Demand, TMO will not unlock it because it's a leased phone. People could keep pressing the unlock issue with TMO, but being a leased phone I would assume they would never unlock it no matter how much complaining. I was on JOD and I got out of that and went to regular jump.
Good luck, there gonna make you go into the store and talk to the mod, they said anything related to JOD is handled at the store level only and that they can't do anything even if they wanted to.
Of course they're not going to unlock the phone if you're still paying on it, because you don't fully own it. If you paid it off completely & owned the device outright, then I'm sure TMO would gladly unlock the phone.
