Hi all,
just bought an Inspire off CL, and unfortunately didn't reallize that the screen won't rotate. I trired recalibrating, but it kept being aborted even though I put the phone flat on the table on its back. A search turned up tons of complaints from about a year ago with few resolutions, and none worked for me (reboot, recalibrate, kill all apps with adv task killer, switch sim card, etc.)
So the big question is, would rooting the phone and flash custom rom solve the problem? Has anyone solved the problem with the g-sensor?
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
Is the phone rooted? Some roms have customizations to lock the screen and keep it from rotating. Do any screens rotate? Or is the home screen just not rotating?
Try going to home> settings> display and check auto rotate screen.
Sent from Soundwave aboard Nemesis.
Auto-rotate is checked. Apps the should rotate (e.g. Google search, email) don't rotate, and most frustrating is that games that use the g-sensor just won't work. The phone is running stock Gb 2.3.3.

If not rooted I would root and try a custom rom would hurt nothing. But make sure you use Ace Hack Kit and no out of XDA method. Also read, read, then read the Effen manual and make sure your knowledged on the steps for rooting. If you get stuck anywhere there is an IRC chat connection in the Ace Hack Kit page.
The thing about buying used phones from someone else is like buying a used car. Your basically buying some elses headache.
The other option would be to return to seller for money back, your option.
PS: If you decide to try out a ICS ROM remember that the kernels are not fully released as of yet so some games will not fully work and do have a few bugs depending on how it reacts with your phone. For gingerbread I would try a few out and see which one you like.
(Absolution 3.7 , Coredroid 9.4) lol my preference but thats a can a worms you dont want to open here on XDA by asking which is best ROM so dont.
Welcome and Enjoy the learning.
Ok, so all the reading made the rooting process seem somewhat intimidating. However, when I actually screwed up the courage to do it, it was like, that's it? It's donde in under 5 minutes, and I hardly did anything!
So the good news is that the phone is now rooted and flashed with coredroid (looks nice!). The bad news is that there's no change in the problem with the g-sensor! I'm starting to suspect that it's more likely hardware. In any case, I wonder if there are any Roms that might have a better shot at fixing the problem? Somehow I have the probably wrong impression that a custom rom that's modded from stock aren't likely to fix my problem... Any suggestions?

Yeah, if you had a sensor problem before the root and it persists after, it is more then likely a hardware issue and no amount of rooting/flashing a new ROM is gonna fix it. If you're under warranty, unroot and send it back for a replacement.

Did you look in setting for rotation display settings. Some launchers like adw launcher lets you also check and uncheck rotation angles. All roms are great in their own way, try a few on for size but I would give them each at least a week or two of testing. A day or two is not really enough to get the feel of them. You can try Absolution 3.7 , Redemption Alpha 6 (ICS) , or even go over to the Desire HD Dev section and try out - Ice Cold Sandwich 7.2 (ICS) (also dont forget to flash inspirmod as well with this one). Also these three will get rid of the stock look.
Good Luck
The phone was bought off craigslist, so no hope of return or warranty. Rotate sreen in settings has been checked, as well as g-sensor calibration (which invariably ends in abort, even after rooting and flashing coredroid. I might try absolution in a few days.
The phone is for my son, and he cares a lot more whether the accelerometer works (for games) than how nice the rom looks.
One problem I found after flashing coredroid is that even at boot up tbe email app keep crashing (without me opening the app). Anyone knows whats up with this?

Did you do a full wipe (factory, cache partition, dalvik) before flashing rom. Coredroid has a zip called full wipe 1.5 as well.
I flashed absolution, and it didn't help with the g-sensor problem at all. I put coredroid back, this time wiping data and cache, and the email problem went away. I guess my son will have to live with the g-sensor as is. Thanks to everyone who replied for the suggestions.

tried t tried to posters in in the hard kernel thread but it says I need 10 or more posts so if some of it's because I was too lazy t it's because I was too lazy to rewrite it
The apn thing is not ignorance. I'm in Canada on wind. My phone randomly decides my sim card no longer exists and my apns vanish and adding a new one isn't possible .. well actually it is, if entered and saved the new apn or apns will show up whenever the sim card issue resolves itself along with the original 2 that vanished . There is no pin pointable cause or solution for the problem. I've had it Happen after wipes . Running nullifier, clean installs booting the phone and even with the screen on 2 seconds after being registered on my net work and blinking or taking my eyes off the screen.
There is nothing I can determine to be what actually causes it. Its happened to me on every rom . From Gb to the first builds of ics right up until now. Every rom aosp aokp kang cm9 and every kernel as well . SO DO NOT BEGIN TO MAKE INFURIATING COMMENTS TRYING TO SAY IT IS AT ALL THE FAULT OF THE USER which is causing it to happen.
And as far as I can tell there is no guaranteed solution . Sometimes it fixes if you back up thru cwm, after rebooting sometimes it fixes it but sometimes it doesn't . I've wiped nullified and done clean installs with kernels without kernels, from one rom base to a completely different rom base With out success of fixing the problem. Its ****ing brutal, and caused personal issues with my girlfriend or my family as well as work because my phone will for no reason **** off on me for sometimes hours at a time and leave me screwed .
So please do not blame devs, or other users for this happening .
Mods if this post should be else where my apologies please move it accordingly. This thread has had the most reports of this apn issue occurring so I wrote it here .
Anyway besides my rant wanna give credit to the dev of this kernel. Since 0604 I haven't had any issues at other then the obvious one. Everything is running great and battery life especially had drastically improved in the last build
Cheers guys.

I had the same problem with CM7. Just switched to Weapon last weekend and haven't had the problem since.
Also having the APN dropping issue. It seemed to be linked to whenever android process telephony would crash. Although as of recently, the APN is just not available. I am running AOKP 31, Harsh 1104. Sometimes its there... others its not. It is a know problem in ICS though.
Ok, for some of us, the apn issue is a rom/kernel specific thing. For you it sounds like a hardware issue. Check how snug your sim card fits, it could be disconnecting, or could have an internal issue related to the sim card connection.

So to sum it up, I don't personally have a skyrocket, but I have a friend who looks to me for custom roms, root, etc for his skyrocket. I've been doing the ROM flashing thing for like 3 years and I've never had issues. Yet it seems every time I flash something to his phone I'll get a call a month or so down the road saying its unbearably slow or that it takes minutes to make a phone call. Is there some step that I've been missing? How does this always happen? I realize they're different phones, but I've flashed countless roms for multiple periods of time on my Xoom, Gnex, and Eris without any issues. Can anyone shed some light on this? Its been driving me crazy.
Thanks for any help,

Can you expand on what is slow? If it is just apps MOT UISNG internet, then his process memory/cache/whatever is gettiing full. Does he ever reboot the phone? Restarting the phone clears memory and will do wonders.
If he is using any app like Task killer or Task manager then he is screwing things up. With the the SGS II, there is no need to kill processes, since that only worsens things.
If he restarts phone, does it recover its speed? Can u check that?
EDIT: If it is internet - i do not see how that could be related to making a call, but still otherwise - then he is being throttled.
Thanks I'll text him and see what I can find out. As of now I think he's running the modified leaked ICS roms that came out like a day after the leak. We live on opposite sides of the state so I rarely see him.
**Edit: there's no way he's being throttled. He's the most data conscious person I know. Barely used 300mb of his 2gb the last few months.

The very first ROMs of the ICS leak had a lag problem. The newer ones quickly got rid of that.
This is a copy paste of his response asking what was wrong:
"I'm not using a task manager at all. First off, the phone freezes every so often and it shuts down by itself when it freezes. That aside, I've rebooted the phone literally dozens of times because it starts acting funny...like, apps will randomly stop working, the home button won't work, etc. Then adding to that, the phone feature is soooooooooo slow. If I tap on the phone to make a call, it takes about 5 seconds to open. Then any numbers I punch in take about 4 to 5 seconds each to appear. If I want to call somebody out of my call history list, it will take at minimum 5 seconds to open, and then selecting the person to call can take up to 10 seconds to respond. Finally, the home screens lag somewhat when I scroll between them and the lock screen is always on, no matter how many times I turn it off. Lol kind of a lot of problems huh?"
So new ICS ROM seems to be the general consensus? Thanks again guys.

Is his current data very important to him? Looks like a sub-optimal flash. It happened to me before - the exact symptoms. Since he is far off from you, he can do the following:
1. Reboot to CWM recovery.
2. Wipe data/factory reset.
3. Wipe dalvik cache.
Of course his favorite apps will be gone......
The more sure way is to reflash, but this time do the above steps along with Mounts&storage>>Format>>system, data, cache
Then reflash the ROM. Of course again his favorite stuff will vanish,
To avoid this he can do a nandroid backup, or Titanium bakup, but then replacing those apps back MAY re-corrupt his system.
Will check back later.......
EDIT: ALso, in some ROMS if you flash radio, kernel and ROM separately, the order matters.
I can figure out a way to back his apps up if I tell him how to use TiBu right? I'll be skyping him later thus weekend to try and figure it out. If he wipes this way it won't erase EVERYTHING on the internal storage right? As in camera pictures will be saved correct? Ill try to walk him through a CWM flashing, shouldn't be too difficult. Any ROM suggestions you have currently for me, prioritizing stability over most everything? Thanks again.

Screw backing up his apps. There is issues with restoring apps and ICS. He should reinstall the ROM or download a new one. And no, pictures and media won't be touched. And I recommend the latter.. Embryo 2.1 is amazing and silky smooth and I have zero issues with it. Had a few that I quickly fixed

Are you implying there's issues restoring for ICS and the skyrocket? That would be understandable maybe, but I know for a fact there isn't for just ICS in general. Thanks for the ROM btw, I'll look into it. If it means anything, he's using AT&T.

Glad I'm not the only one in that boat. I swear I have no idea what happens to other peoples phones once I flash stuff on them. Mom and sisters nook color is running fine still. Flashed a ROM on an OG Droid for a different friend a few months back and within two weeks he had me fix it because *I* messed it up (How the hell he managed to delete the launcher and google framework packages is beyond me :what: ). Guess there's a reason root is disabled when you purchase a phone . Although I still don't understand how problems arise weeks if not months later and the fingers are always pointed back to me. /rant sorry.
I'll be checking out the two ROMs suggested here shortly then making a detailed email out to him. Thanks again everyone.

Haha, let them figure out how to modify their own devices. It will only help them to know what they are doing and you will have less problems.
You are most correct. For the most part, unless its a close friend I will refrain from doing anything. I've had too many instances where people don't understand what I'm telling them. For example, the mere installation of juicedefender on a colleagues phone caused "me to be unable to get Facebook messages or words with friends notifications instantly unless I turned the screen on and I had to take it to the store to get repaired" :banghead: WELL YES. What did you think I meant when I told you your data services would be suspended to save battery while the screen was off? TLDR: Family only or I'll make you learn yourself (or sign a waiver )

Yes, I have learned to be very selective in helping people run roms and such. If they don't understand what it means to clear cache, dalvik, fix permissions, etc.. they are gonna have problems. They need to understand the basics of custom roms, rooting, and the like before they can even consider using anything but stock. They simply have no business running a custom rom, and some are buggy, which makes it far worse. Our ICS leak needs some TLC and some knowledge to keep it running and debug when problems arise. This is something a "buddy" with no knowledge is not gonna be able to fix, and he will have problems. Even Gb customs have issues which require basic knowledge to fix. Our "buddies" need to read the forums and equip themselves with some knowledge before doing or running anything other than stock.
I guess I'm just used to having phones with a larger development community (Nexus, Eris, OG Droid, Nook). The one here is stellar, don't get me wrong, but I've had numerous android devices with flash and forget ROMs that I may have incorrectly assumed all phones had these. My apologies to anyone who takes that offensively, it wasn't intended to be. There are tons of great devs here who continue to impress me, but the population of this dev forum compared to the GNex for example, is much smaller.
Tldr again: I incorrectly assumed most phones had flash and forget ROMs. Is there anything close to stock I can just flash and root for said buddy? Ideally a stock rooted ROM would be best I think.

Well, I consider it stable with both seanz's ucld2 sky ics and nexusmods beta 7, but there are a couple bugs. If your buddy just needs a rom that runs and doesn't need fixing every now and again he should probably stay on Gb.

Hi everyone,
I'm having overheating issues with the custom ROMs put up in the forums here. It's really frustrating because I love the interface but I can crashes and overheats pretty often.
I was running a rooted i727r with official ICS, I used ROM manager to flash to paranoid android ICS and JB, I also tried liquified (I think that;s what it's called) and everything runs great except I sometimes get overheating (up to 45 degrees celcius) at which point the phone just shuts itself off. And the worst part is that the battery gets super drained when that happens. I have done nothing to trigger and has happened when it was in my hand as well as in my pockets when in sleep mode.
I don't want to run official ICS, so if there is a solution, I'd be really grateful!
Also on an unrelated note, I can't get swype to work on these custom roms, does anyone have an idea?
Thanks in advance!
Use clockwork mod or twrp to flash and if you haven't yet, try your roms with the stock kernel.
Don't use rom manager and do some reading.

ROM Manager can and will brick your phone if you use it to flash ROMs on a Skyrocket. Read up and learn before doing things like that.
Stay on stock rooted and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, switch to a TW-based ROM and use the stock kernel. If your phone is still cool, then move with caution into AOSP territory (which seems to be where you want to go) and consider UC'ing/UV'ing AFTER you've read up on them and understand the possible side effects.
my phone gets hot sometimes, but usually when i'm browsing for a while. doesn't seem to be overly hot though but definitely hot to the touch

I don't mean to sound defensive, but I've read all the stickies...they tell me how to do things, not WHY to do things (kinda like a recipe book). I might be ignorant in the technicalities, but I know my way around following instructions. Telling me to just READ is not helping me, telling me WHAT to read or WHERE to go is better, and I'll be glad to read.
I took your many advices and flashed back to the semi-official ICS using the CWM recovery. The overheating and crashing problems are no longer happening, at least not during all of today which is a good sign in my eye. I still don't have an indication why it wasn't working when I used to the ROMs provided in the development section. I follow the instructions to the tee and I still had the problem (even when I used the CWM instead of ROM manager pro).
I was having severe heating probs. I never let it get so hot that it autoshutdown but I'd do it manually. I found that there was a serious wakelock happening and even while awake media scanner was going nuts. On it's own it just chewed up the battery but combine a high useage app with media scanner and the phone got hot. I ended up doing a stock rom install via Odin, reformatting my ex sd card. It's been good ever since. You haven't been using Zedge by any chance??

No it wasn't installed because I loved the roms built in ringtones but I did notice that it was taking longer than usual to read the media from the external sd card...do you think it had something to do with that?

Could be. Try pulling everything off your sd card and put on your pc. Format the card and put everything back on.

It is the Media card...a couple of my friends have had the overheating issues on their devices. I would suggest formatting the media card on the PC as previously stated. If that fails then try another SD card since it could just be the SD card.

I've ran plenty of custom roms even OC to 1.9ghz but the phone will get hot no matter what with heavy wifi usage or talking I must say.
With that said, the custom rom will most likely not help unless you aim for roms that aim for that kind of purpose.
Others may beg to differ but that's my 2centz.
Alright, so I did what some of you said and disabled the media storage at start up. The crashes and overheating are fixed! But, now I can't see my pictures that I stopped in the external sd card when I'm browsing for them through my files or through the gallery. I can, however, see them through third party file browsers. It's there a way that I can at least see them them in my gallery? I tried f5 but it didn't work.
Thanks in advance

I apologize if these questions were asked before, but I could not find anything that helped through searching.
Both my wife and I are having issues with the signal on our phones. We get drops and a weird noise occasionally occurs (a weird gargle sounding noise or something like a fax machine). I'm running the latest Ultragen, and she's running the latest AntonX Barebones. I just find it weird that both phones do the same thing.
So, the question is, do all these ROMs use the same modem? Could switching to a different modem help solve the issues I'm having? How do I find out which ROM uses which modem? There's nothing listed in the phone's "about" section of which modem is being used.
Any feedback would be awesome!
About phone>baseband. That will tell you what modem your running. Fb's got thread for modems in the Dev section.
Try some and see if it fixes it. I've never had that issue and don't remember anyone else having it either.
Thanks, Hechoen! I'll check out FB's thread and just do some trial & errors. I'll definitely post back with my findings just in case anyone else runs into this issue.
I forgot to mention that I'm on T-mobile; although I doubt it is carrier related since both phones are having the same problem and I'm in Chicago, where the signal is strong.
For what it's worth I guess TMOB and MetroPCS are in the process of merging. Some people on are having strange issues. So if this has started recently I'd call TMOB and *****. Also try going back to stock on both phones for a few days. If it still does it then call TMOB and ***** some more. LOL Good luck.
I didn't know they started implementing that... I'm definitely gonna *****! LOL Thanks for the heads up!
