when i try to push the token numbers in the htcdev,com page after giving sumbit appears me this message;
"Unlocking Bootloader Failed!
Sorry it didn't work out. Here's why:
We're sorry, but it appears your attempt to unlock the bootloader on this device has failed. This could be caused by several factors including simple errors in the entry of the unlock token, problems with your device, or a lack of manufacturer support for the unlocking process. Please see the specific error code listed below, and try again if necessary.
Error Code: 160.
Error Reason: MID Not Allowed."

You're not on 2.20. You want this method:

I tried that one as well but it's a little confusing for a non-native English speaker because the instructions are not well displayed.... And I received some errors aswell
Could you give me a noob-proof guide about the method please? Thanks so much

Alas, I've been rooted since 1.73 and never used this one. The method is tricky because the root is tricky. I do know that a lot of people had to try it several times before it worked. Give it another try--you do have to be patient with this phone. A lot of things don't seem to take the first time.

Did you confirm that you're on 1.85?
Do you have the HTC drivers installed on your computer?
If you do adb devices, does it see your phone?

This is the only root method for 1.85: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296
If you are having trouble with it, tell us what step your are getting stuck, error messages, etc.
is it really that hard to unlock and root now??? took me a few minutes to do both and i even had to push the clock up a couple times. i've been so tempted to push my original mmcblk0p4 back just to see what the problem is.

Naw, the OP posted on another thread, and didn't even know if he was supposed to do the hex edit on the phone or on the PC, so he didn't even get that step done. Just a matter of needing to read and learn more.
The guy in post 7 above wasted time on different root methods, when only 1 currently works for 1.85. So he probably just needs to try a few times using the correct method.

Everything can be accomplished easily if they take the time to read about what they are doing to their phones.
I couldn't see myself attempting any of that on such an expensive device without understanding exactly what I was doing to it.
Sent from my One X using XDA Premium HD app
So true. I can never understand the line of thinking: I want to mess around with the OS of this $600 device (and attempt things that may cause permanent damage if I do them wrong). But I don't want to read or learn anything in order to do it.
It's fundamentally a lack of patience in most cases.
I think people do care about their phones, they're just so excited/determined about rooting and romming that they can't make themselves slow down and be careful.

I don't have computer experience and don't even know how to open the browser on my computer that's how noon and dumb I am.so I'm asking for help. Well, I'm writing this thread because I happily have a root method that doesn't require HTC unlock and you can downgrade to 2.2. Let's get into the information about it:
Required:
ADB
PG06IMG.zip {Downgraded version}
misc.img * {md5sum = c88dd947eb3b36eec90503a3525ae0de}
tacoroot *
*included in zip file
Instructions:
Alright, for this you will need to run the following commands:
adb push tacoroot.sh /data/local/tmp/taco
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/taco
adb shell sh /data/local/tmp/taco --setup
YOU NEED TO Hit Vol up + Vol Down + Power all at once after it goes into recovery!
After it reboots type:
adb shell sh /data/local/tmp/taco --root
and then you use
adb shell dd if=/sdcard/misc.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17
Pull your battery after you check the md5sum of the img by using adb shell md5sum /dev/block/mmcblk0p17
and then reboot into hboot to downgrade
.

Why are you re-posting indirect's method saying that you've found a new method??? We know where his thread is so it's pretty pointless to re-post it here. This is not a development section and should not provide rooting instructions here..
Not to mention Vicodan's method works just fine, indirects method never worked for me but idk some people say it's worked for them.

Follow the videos, step-by-step. If you have no computer/technology experience, though, then why do you want to root your phone? I'm not saying you shouldn't, but the main reason is to do things that normal users wouldn't...
I've tried both Indirects Method, and the directions listed on Vicodan's thread. Both have worked for me successfully on 2.3.4 .

I wouldn't promote the htc unlock tool. That's just me though. Its either s-off with out involving HTC or I'm running an unrooted device. Just scared to use the tool because if it ever comes down to warranty I bet they could pull your unlock token and with still being able to run custom kernels it would be to easy for them to say screw you

They can't even tell you used the unlock tool unless they look at bootloader and it says "unlocked".
And that's a Sprint thing not an HTC thing.
If they see "s-off" you obviously rooted your phone...
This is why you RUU when you have a hardware issue.
Either way, we're all pretty much out of warranty at this point.

I agree. I mean what if I was considering using the unlock tool, got the email downloaded the token but never used the thing. Plus when you unlock the bootloader it says this may or may not void the warrenty. You have the option to select "no" when unlocking the bootloader and it will just reboot your phone.

2.3.4. otaking71 and I were on IRC. I found out HTC Evo 3d unlock tool worked on 2.3.4 OTA, otaking and I found that after unlocking the bootloader using the HTC unlocker and getting root we were still not able to flash misc.img.
You would flash misc.img reboot and then you would not be able to flash the s-off engineering bootloader. We discovered that after we flashed misc.img, pulled the battery, went into bootloader that it would let us downgrade to 2.2 using PG06IMG.zip. After that we were able to flash the engineering s-off bootloader to obtain s-off (bcnice20's method who is given credit in the thread as well as whoever else deserved credit).
With 2.3.3 you must use fr3vo.
Any other questions?
I'm feeling a lot of hate against Vicodan and otaking for discovering a new method to downgrade to 2.2. Do we really need otaking to come in here too and explain it all over again? I for one appriciate it. Where's those donate buttons again? Oh that's right I'll be hitting those up later on tonight because they deserve it for their time and efforts. Thanks again to both otaking and Vicodan.

Really... again with your ISH. Any questions??? I mean come on man. Look you said " My Method", now your saying otaking and I. Bottom line it's not the first time you imply or outright say that you discovered the Root method. I'm pulling your card because you decided to pull mine. I've tried to be nice to you since jump street. But lately your running around here posting up like your the Mod. Your NOT. I'm here to help everyone and anyone. Also to learn what I can from whoever I can. That means Newb or Dev, doesn't matter to me. If I can learn from them I will. But straight up you said " My method ". So if you would like we can bury this ISH and move on. Or do you feel the need to continue?

I'm not hating on anyone. Also I never said ISH about otaking or even mentioned him till now. Oh and BTW please don't threaten me like some two year old. With having someone come to explain something to me. I am extremely grateful for all the work people have put in to attaining Root for us, Otaking71, Indirect, all those who helped. I'm pulling Vicodan's card. He's been strutting around here posting up like he's knows everything about everything. The straw that broke the Camels back was directly telling me who I can and can't help. And what I can and cannot do. I appreciate and give credit to anyone and everyone who deserves it. But I also do not include myself for credit if I do not deserve it. I also do not take Credit for someone else's work. So enough with this already.

yes, currently software version 1.85 is rootable. i would strongly recommend staying away from any ONE-CLICK rooting methods, as you may inadvertently OTA yourself. one click asks you to check for updates, but back then there wasn't an update to be found. if you do one click, and you do begin to update, quickly run a factory reset to get out of the OTA
once you OTA, you can never root or unlock your phone. (that's what happened to me)

I disagree with the other poster. Sure, you're going to check for updates, and if the one-click root does not work, it will start to download the update. The update is 100's of mb, so you have plenty of time to go and manually change the date in your settings. Just add two days. This will immediately confuse the server, and it corrupts the download and stops right away. Then try the root process again. It took me many tries of adding two days (got somewhere near the end of August), but low and behold, it finally was successfully.
Also, at any point feel free to do a factory reset and start again. All of the people's recent experiences are near the end of the thread I posted above.
FYI, I did this 3 days ago on my phone.

When i first bought it i rooted it and then downloaded fun root apps like titanium backup, and set cpu. I heard about custom roms and i wanted to try one. So i followed the instructions given on the website. Im sorry i dont remember what website it was that i downloaded it from. So i downloaded Clockworkmod from play store and installed it on my phone. Then copied the rom to my sd card. I tried to flash is but nothing would happen. So i tried to boot into recovery mode and i woould get a legal actions page, then my bootloader would say ***tampered*** ***locked*** ***security warning***. So then i tried to unlock my boot loader via htc dev and i got the error 160 mid not allowed. So i wanted to unroot and restore so i deleted supersu and the su files from my phone and i used root checker to check if unrooted. it said *not properly rooted*. But my phone can still view and download root apps.
Then i tried to restore my phone to stock, but when i pressed factory reset i would get the same legal actions page and my boot loader would say *tampered* *locked* *security warning*. And my att software update doesnt work. when i press on it it says htc dm has stopped and after that it does nothing when i press the button. And many apps close unsuspectingly. I would like to completely revert my phone to stock so i can start over again. thank you.
I have the HTC One X dual core usa version
i bought it at radio shack
It is on AT&T
Sounds like you might have tried to install a rom for the international version. Be thankful it didn't work.
You can't unlock via htcdev without changing your CID because AT&T is blocking it.
The version of CWM in the Play Store (ROM Manager?) is not supported for this phone and will not work.
To restore to stock, you need to flash the RUU for your current version. Check your software version in Settings.
This may come across as rude but you are obviously aware of XDAs existence since you are posting here, why on earth would you do anything to your phone without FIRST checking XDA to make sure it's kosher? I see way too many threads like this and it boggles my mind.
You guys don't want to come to XDA for help with your ROMs and mods, but as soon as you screw something up you come running to us for assistance.

First, you need to do A LOT more reading before you try to unlock your bootloader and flash ROMs. You missed a ton of steps and it is pretty clear you didn't do your homework. I am not trying to be rude, but trying to save you from ruining your phone.
Check what firmware you have. I assume 1.85 if you have root, but please check. If you want to be able to re-root your phone do not use the 2.20 RUU! Go download the RUU . Follow the instructions and run the RUU to return your phone to stock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1670238 (1.85 RUU)
You can then start the process over with rooting and unlocking. You must have SuperCID before you can unlock your bootloader. Use TWRP and not CWR because it is not supported on the AT&T One X. You must NEVER try installing a ROM meant for the international version. (Stay in this section of the forum!) Once you root and unlock, you will not be able to download OTAs from HTC.

thankyou so much!! that was such a stupid mistake. The indian people making the videos i was watching for instructions should have been a dead giveaway that it was for the international version!! again thank you so much. so where can i download RUU and instructions. and if you can what would be the best way to root and unlock bootloader for my version of the phone?

I edited my reply and included two links. First is to the 1.85 RUU. Make sure you don't have 2.20 by going to Settings -> About -> Software Information and look at Software Number. As long as you don't have 2.20, download that RUU, plug your phone in, and run it. IT WILL ERASE EVERYTHING! so make sure to back up the contents of your SD card first.
The second link is to the AT&T One X resource Roll-up. Everything you need to root/unlock/rom will be in there.
The steps are in this order:
1. Root using the 1.85 root
2. Get SuperCID
3. Go to HTCDev.com to get unlock token, flash unlock token, unlock bootloader
4. Flash recovery (TWRP)
5. Flash ROM
Make sure you read ALL of the instructions first!! And I would recommend CleanROM once you get that far.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you mess up your phone.

Good point! I just automatically do that every time I flash a rom so I always forget to include that as an additional step. But that will save a lot of time if anything goes wrong.

Although the answer is already in this thread, if I were you, I would take this time to use the search and find out what an RUU is and what it does. You are going to use them many times in the future so might as well know.

As long as you flashed 1.85 then the root script will work. You may have to manually set the day ahead and try again a few times. Read the thread. Search the thread. Your answers are probably in there.

So you run the one click method, it tells you to try to run the AT&T software update, and your phone does nothing? That is what is happening?

Hi guys,
Just got the HTC One X about a week ago and the weird thing is, I was able to root the damn thing the first day I got it but the phone had some defect and I just got a new one today. It is still on 1.85. No matter what I tried, I am not able to root it. I was able to root it the first time using the one click method, and today I have tried both the one click method and the newer adb method. Ive been at it for hours with no luck. I have never had any trouble rooting phones before. I am honestly willing to pay like 30 bucks if someone can help me root the damn thing. Please help!
This might help

Just got it all successfully Thanks guys for trying to help!!
I have literally tried EVERYTHING. I have spent countless hours and actually did not go to sleep last night trying to figure this damn thing out.
I have a HTC One X running Android Version 4.0.4, HTC Sense 4.0, and Software 2.20.
I cannot figure this **** out. Right now when I run the X-Factor exploit, it gets stuck at "daemon started succesfully". When I run the HTC Drivers.exe that come with Hasoon2000's All in one kit, it doesn't even run. It does nothing.
I have restarted my computer numerous times, and I am stuck. So I'm offering this:
Anyone who helps me/leads me in the correct direction to rooting and bootunlocking my ATT One X so I can install Cyanogenmod 10,
I will give you $25 [PayPal]

It would be more helpful to list the things you tried, instead of just saying "literally everything".
Does adb see the phone?
Did you try different USB ports or cables? Tried a different computer (if possible)?

I'm not sure by what you mean of "does adb see the phone?
If you mean if I open up device manager and it says "adb device", then no, adb does not see it.
I did try different USB cables, I'll try a different port now.
I do not have any access to any other computer at the moment, so no.
Thanks for your time, by the way.

Have you tried updating drivers manually? His toolkit did thesame to me but I just went to:
Right click Computer -> Manage -> driver manager
and updated my drivers from there.
EDIT: Try the post above mine, before this. I didn't even think of that, HTC Sync will install that latest drivers.
Aldo, this is technically a question so it shouldn't be here. It should be in Q&A
The problem is almost certainly the HTC drivers. Otherwise your computer won't see the phone.
You have to do this with just about every new device you root, unless you're staying with the same manufacturer.

it WILL work using the X-factor exploit.
Three main steps:

3.) follow all on screen instructions.

Check to make sure your use debugging is on, try it. If that doesn't work... I would like to see the prompt. May have to do this through teamviewer.
Drivers may be the problem. I didn't have quite the same problem he is having( fastboot and adb didn't wont to see my device.) Spent 3 days trying to fiqure it out. Finally I gave up and installed Mac Os X on vmware and ran the mac version of x-factor and then I had no problems. You might want to try that. It was the only thing that worked for me. Htc sync, pda net, and reinstalling the driver never helped me. No matter what I did I never could get windows to see my device.
