2.3.4 rooting steps needeed. - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't have computer experience and don't even know how to open the browser on my computer that's how noon and dumb I am.so I'm asking for help. I wanna root my EVO shift and I have search and found this .I'm in 2.3.4 but it has the steps but I don't know what to do first I don't even know whats adb. Not even know where to put the codes in.please I'm asking for help and queations. So don't fire this thread cuz its a Q&A .thank yall.
Well, I'm writing this thread because I happily have a root method that doesn't require HTC unlock and you can downgrade to 2.2. Let's get into the information about it:
Required:
ADB
PG06IMG.zip {Downgraded version}
misc.img * {md5sum = c88dd947eb3b36eec90503a3525ae0de}
tacoroot *
*included in zip file
Instructions:
Alright, for this you will need to run the following commands:
adb push tacoroot.sh /data/local/tmp/taco
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/taco
adb shell sh /data/local/tmp/taco --setup
YOU NEED TO Hit Vol up + Vol Down + Power all at once after it goes into recovery!
After it reboots type:
adb shell sh /data/local/tmp/taco --root
and then you use
adb shell dd if=/sdcard/misc.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17
Pull your battery after you check the md5sum of the img by using adb shell md5sum /dev/block/mmcblk0p17
and then reboot into hboot to downgrade
.

Why are you re-posting indirect's method saying that you've found a new method??? We know where his thread is so it's pretty pointless to re-post it here. This is not a development section and should not provide rooting instructions here..
Not to mention Vicodan's method works just fine, indirects method never worked for me but idk some people say it's worked for them.

Follow the videos, step-by-step. If you have no computer/technology experience, though, then why do you want to root your phone? I'm not saying you shouldn't, but the main reason is to do things that normal users wouldn't...

I've tried both Indirects Method, and the directions listed on Vicodan's thread. Both have worked for me successfully on 2.3.4 .

I wouldn't promote the htc unlock tool. That's just me though. Its either s-off with out involving HTC or I'm running an unrooted device. Just scared to use the tool because if it ever comes down to warranty I bet they could pull your unlock token and with still being able to run custom kernels it would be to easy for them to say screw you

They can't even tell you used the unlock tool unless they look at bootloader and it says "unlocked".
And that's a Sprint thing not an HTC thing.
If they see "s-off" you obviously rooted your phone...
This is why you RUU when you have a hardware issue.
Either way, we're all pretty much out of warranty at this point.

I agree. I mean what if I was considering using the unlock tool, got the email downloaded the token but never used the thing. Plus when you unlock the bootloader it says this may or may not void the warrenty. You have the option to select "no" when unlocking the bootloader and it will just reboot your phone.

Actually they can tell you used the HTC Unlock tool. Weather or not they choose to pull the Warranty Voided Card is up to them. Has to do with the information collected. Oh and BTW , when did you discover a Root method? Or do you mean your instructions for someone else's method?

2.3.4. otaking71 and I were on IRC. I found out HTC Evo 3d unlock tool worked on 2.3.4 OTA, otaking and I found that after unlocking the bootloader using the HTC unlocker and getting root we were still not able to flash misc.img.
You would flash misc.img reboot and then you would not be able to flash the s-off engineering bootloader. We discovered that after we flashed misc.img, pulled the battery, went into bootloader that it would let us downgrade to 2.2 using PG06IMG.zip. After that we were able to flash the engineering s-off bootloader to obtain s-off (bcnice20's method who is given credit in the thread as well as whoever else deserved credit).
With 2.3.3 you must use fr3vo.
Any other questions?

I'm feeling a lot of hate against Vicodan and otaking for discovering a new method to downgrade to 2.2. Do we really need otaking to come in here too and explain it all over again? I for one appriciate it. Where's those donate buttons again? Oh that's right I'll be hitting those up later on tonight because they deserve it for their time and efforts. Thanks again to both otaking and Vicodan.

Really... again with your ISH. Any questions??? I mean come on man. Look you said " My Method", now your saying otaking and I. Bottom line it's not the first time you imply or outright say that you discovered the Root method. I'm pulling your card because you decided to pull mine. I've tried to be nice to you since jump street. But lately your running around here posting up like your the Mod. Your NOT. I'm here to help everyone and anyone. Also to learn what I can from whoever I can. That means Newb or Dev, doesn't matter to me. If I can learn from them I will. But straight up you said " My method ". So if you would like we can bury this ISH and move on. Or do you feel the need to continue?

I'm not hating on anyone. Also I never said ISH about otaking or even mentioned him till now. Oh and BTW please don't threaten me like some two year old. With having someone come to explain something to me. I am extremely grateful for all the work people have put in to attaining Root for us, Otaking71, Indirect, all those who helped. I'm pulling Vicodan's card. He's been strutting around here posting up like he's knows everything about everything. The straw that broke the Camels back was directly telling me who I can and can't help. And what I can and cannot do. I appreciate and give credit to anyone and everyone who deserves it. But I also do not include myself for credit if I do not deserve it. I also do not take Credit for someone else's work. So enough with this already.

[GUIDE] How To Unroot And Then Reroot With 4.24.651.1

You Must Be Rooted With S-OFF To Do This!
Seeing how there is no way to root 4.24 yet, I thought I would throw a little something together in case anyone needs to unroot before taking their phone into Sprint. This will return your phone to stock with S-ON while leaving a backdoor to reroot with. I have tested this as best I can without actually upgrading my hBoot (I want to keep the eng hboot), but there are no guarantees you won't run into issues. You also must flash the modified PC36IMG before setting S-ON in order for this to work.
While it would be trivial to create a script to automate this process, I wanted to make sure you know exactly what this does so it is easier to re-root. Plus there's no fun in having a script do all the work.
I've included all the files needed to use ADB and Fastboot on Windows, Linux and Macs. They have been renamed to match the operating system (eg. ADB for Windows is adbw, fastboot for Linux is fastbootl) and you may need to set the correct permissions in order to use them.
You will need:
Unrevoked Forever - The latest version of Unrevoked's S-OFF and S-ON tools
E4GUnroot.zip - The modified 4.24.651.1 PC36IMG zip and an unpacked copy of Amon RA's 1.8 recovery
Basic knowledge about ADB and Fastboot
Plenty of Battery Life
A little common sense

How To Unroot:
Make a Nandroid with the Boot, System and Data partitions along with your .android folder.
Make sure you have Radio S-OFF and not S-OFF from the ENG hBoot. If your bootloader shows SHIP S-OFF you should be good, if it shows ENG S-OFF then you will want to run Unrevoked Forever to make sure S-OFF is set from the radio.
Use ADB to reboot into RUU mode.
Code:
adb reboot oem-78
Once in RUU mode flash the PC36IMG. Be very careful that you do not interrupt it, doing so can easily result in the permanent bricking of your phone.
Code:
fastboot flash zip PC36IMG_4.24.651.1_Rootable.zip
Watch the output and make sure it completes correctly. If you get an error saying something about "remote 90: hboot pre-update" flash it again.
When it's finished flashing reboot and make your way into the Recovery.
Code:
fastboot reboot
--or--
fastboot reboot-bootloader
The recovery may show a green arrow for a few moments, wait for it to turn into the Red Triangle with an Exclamation Mark inside of it. Then push Amon RA's recovery to the phone and bring up the UI.
Code:
adb push amon_ra_1.8-mod /
adb shell "busybox --install /sbin"
adb shell "nohup /sbin/recovery &"
Now that the Recovery is up, use it to flash Unrevoked's S-ON tool.
You are now fully unrooted with S-ON! After you remove your SD card there will be nothing on your phone to show it was rooted.
Click to collapse
How To Root Again:
Reboot into the Recovery and bring up Amon RA's recovery.
Run Unrevoked's S-OFF tool to unlock the NAND.
Flash your Recovery of choice and use it to restore your Nandroid
And that's it! You should be good to go again.

Good job and very educated post.
Just figured it may come in handy to someone, I had to unroot mine a few times to take it in to Sprint and I always did something similar to this to make it easier to reroot. If you wanted too you could even restore your data partition from a nandroid and remove all the root apps, that way your phone is still how you like it just unrooted for the time being.
Thank you sir. Very informative and useful post..
I have a question about this since it seems what your describing may help me. Since I got my E3d I have been playing around with my e4g and I upgraded mt hboot not realizing it would turn s-on. I know I'm still rooted since i have flashed at least 3 custom roms since then. I am on cm7.3 currently. For my case would using the unrevoked s-on/s-off tool to turn s-off work?
Great job here, hope I never have to use this though but should help many that need to take in their phone for service.

I've been with my Evo since the beginning so I have no issues, but a friend of mine just bought the Evo. Unfortunately, his came with gingerbread with 4.24.651. Since his is not rooted to begin with, we can't unroot and reroot, so is it safe to assume that this method will not work? If so, are there any known methods to root? thanks in advance....

If you see S-Off on the bootloader screen, then you are S-Off, which is the ONLY thing that the Revolutionary method accomplishes. However, if you read the information on the site (the FAQ), it provides the file you need to flash to get root. Once you flash that file, you will have everything you need to start making backups, customizing, and flashing other software. The Revolutionary method is by far one of the easiest and best methods of obtaining S-Off for a device like the Tbolt.

Sorry it didn't work out. Here's why:
We're sorry, but it appears your attempt to unlock the bootloader on this device has failed. Alas, I've been rooted since 1.73 and never used this one. The method is tricky because the root is tricky. I do know that a lot of people had to try it several times before it worked. Give it another try--you do have to be patient with this phone. A lot of things don't seem to take the first time.

Did you confirm that you're on 1.85?
Do you have the HTC drivers installed on your computer?
If you do adb devices, does it see your phone?

Alas, I've been rooted since 1.73 and never used this one. The method is tricky because the root is tricky. I do know that a lot of people had to try it several times before it worked. Give it another try--you do have to be patient with this phone. A lot of things don't seem to take the first time.

This is the only root method for 1.85: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296
If you are having trouble with it, tell us what step your are getting stuck, error messages, etc.
is it really that hard to unlock and root now??? took me a few minutes to do both and i even had to push the clock up a couple times. i've been so tempted to push my original mmcblk0p4 back just to see what the problem is.

Naw, the OP posted on another thread, and didn't even know if he was supposed to do the hex edit on the phone or on the PC, so he didn't even get that step done. Just a matter of needing to read and learn more.
The guy in post 7 above wasted time on different root methods, when only 1 currently works for 1.85. So he probably just needs to try a few times using the correct method.

Everything can be accomplished easily if they take the time to read about what they are doing to their phones.
I couldn't see myself attempting any of that on such an expensive device without understanding exactly what I was doing to it.
Sent from my One X using XDA Premium HD app
So true. I can never understand the line of thinking: I want to mess around with the OS of this $600 device (and attempt things that may cause permanent damage if I do them wrong). But I don't want to read or learn anything in order to do it.
It's fundamentally a lack of patience in most cases.
I think people do care about their phones, they're just so excited/determined about rooting and romming that they can't make themselves slow down and be careful.

[Q] Can't unlock bootloader on htcdev.com

I've reviewe dthreads with similar complaints, but...
1) I'm trying to root from linux
2) none of the threads match my conditions
Problem:
I can't get bootloader unlocked from htcdev.com. The website is super slow, and times out my login every 5 minutes. Grrrrr! When I run "fastboot oem get_identifier_token" it
1) returns a different blob every iteration
2) fails with:
Error Code: 173
Error Reason: Check rule failed with exception.
I gotta get past this before I can move on. I've spent hours preparing to do this, i.e. watching vids, reading instructions, etc, and I can't get past step #1. Grrrr!
Any help?
Thanks
rickbol
Are you using the fastboot binary built for linux? You might have the one for windows by mistake
Sent from my PG06100 using xda premium
I downloaded the one for linux. It's not an .exe, and when I run "./fastboot devices" i returns listing: "HT0CNHV02877 fastboot"
Have you tried Indirects method to downgrade? After you downgrade you can still root it when you go to 2.2
You have to do the manual method though since you're on linux
But other than an incorrect binary, I dont know what the problem could be

What's your os? 32 or 64bit?
If its 64bit have you installed the 32 bit libs.
Have you tried a different USB port or USB cable?

"Indirect methods"? I'm not aware of them. Any links? Also, by "manual method", I presume you intend the one I've been following, as opposed to to your "1-Click Shift ROOTility"? I don't mind the manual method, as I've studied them for some time, and I'm familiar with the command interface. I'd like to proceed on Linux, especially if I can help clear up some issues along the way. But it sounds like most folks root from Windows?
I read alot of people having the same problem (today), its probably the site (HTCDev) itself.
I've been trying all day to unlock my (newly repaired) HTC One X without any success.
Hope it gets sorted soon.:fingers-crossed:

Is that for the HTC Evo shift? Reason I ask is we never had an animal named s-off method when I was around these parts.

Yes, I did mean to post here because while the phones may be different I was experiencing the same problem as the first post on this forum. However, I figured it out and everything is working fine now.

How to know if you're s-off?

Hi, I realize I will get a lot of flame for this, but how do I know if my AT&T One X is S-off?
See, I'm trying to flash this custom boot screen from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173665) and the requirements say I must be S-off and have an unlocked bootloader.
I know for sure my bootloader is unlocked (via the HTCDev method). I also read some places that S-off means your bootload is locked? So kind of confused here.
Thanks very much XDA geniuses!!!!

Reboot into boot loader. It'll either say S-On or S-Off.
Okay, I've done that and it says I'm S-On.
What are the benefits of S-Off and any cons? Thanks given
System write protection is turned off. Reduces chance of bricking with ruu and allows you to change things like hboot and splash screen without the need for them to be signed. It's good to have if you're knowledgeable enough to read and follow instructions.

No need to flash boot.img
Less vernerable to brick etc...
There's really no disadvatage of gaining soff, so why not?

There is one disadvantage. S-OFF stands for Security Off. Security Off disables security checks, verifying your hboot, software version, CID, etc. If you flash something that you're not supposed to to the emmc partitions or something not designed for evita, you will brick.

For some reason, these two just seem to coincide the hell out of each other someone explain
T4L, I've followed the steps on that thread you pointed me to, but I'm stuck on step 7, inputting this to the command prompt:
adb shell chmod 744 /data/local/tmp/soffbin3
See, I read one of the posts in there that says I can use the files from Hassoon's all in one tool and just point the command prompt there, however when I type in "adb shell chmod 744" itdoesn't do anything. Then when I type in anything else after "adb shell chmod 744" it says error: cannot find device.
What do?

Make sure you're plugged into a USB 2 port, not USB 3. Anytime I get that error, it's cause I forgot to plug it in the right one.
