Successful unlock in Canada? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone successfully unlocked either the RAZR HD or RAZR Max HD for use in Canada? If so which carrier are you using it on, and can you connect to LTE with it?
Thanks in advance

I have the rogers RAZR HD. I am using it with Fido ( even though Fido is about to release it) I bought an unlock code for it but I ended up not needing it. As soon as I popped in my Fido lte sim the phone changed over to a Fido phone. Late works great
Sent from my XT925 using xda app-developers app

I was debating buying the HD LTE from rogers and doing exactly what you are. I'm currently using a Samsung captivate locked to rogers but it works with my fido sim card like you mentioned above.
The maxx HD is what I am aiming for because of the battery. I know I can unlock it, Motorola confirmed it. The phone itself will work with my fido sim once unlocked, I'm just curious if the LTE will work as well. Motorola could only confirm the HSDPA will work with fido, and are unsure about LTE. They also could not confirm how an ota update would be pushed to my device. Normally they are carrier driven, but because I would be using it with fido and fido wouldn't push an ota, would I always be stuck with ICS? The only other option is to have Motorola update the phone to jb then send it to me. Or I could root and flash a ROM, but would prefer not to go that route unless I have to.

I have unlocked my HD, and get LTE with Rogers no problem.

But yours is a rogers phone, the maxx HD is a Verizon (american phone) so I'm not sure if everything will work
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app

The Verizon version is not locked. It won't roam to ATT/TMobile in the US, but it is not locked and does not require an unlock PIN, nor does it prompt for a PIN when you insert a foreign SIM card. You just need to switch the mode over to GSM (under network settings) for it to work properly (not sure LTE will work, it probably won't [different signal bands])
It is difficult to test to see if it will work because the firmware on the VZ version won't connect to ATT/TMobile towers, but there are some threads on here where people have driven near/into Mexico and popped in a Mexican SIM and been OK. Of course, there are some threads about people having problems in India ... so the word is still out I guess.

I'm using my unlocked Rogers XT925 on Bell, with full LTE access.

Thanks for the information guys!

Verizon's LTE band is not the same as Roger's/Fido. Rogers uses B4 and B17, I believe. Verizon uses B13. XT926 ONLY supports B13 LTE.

Razr Maxx HD on Fido, straight from Verizon store with no unlock. You're only going to get HSPA+ speeds, but I am getting 15 Mbit/s or more on Fido in Vancouver.

Verizon ships to Canada? Also when I add it to my cart, it forces me to buy a plan. I can't choose no contract.

How is it working with Bell? I'm trying to use my xt925 with Bell and I can barely get a bar. I take the same SIM and stick it another phone, full bars. I stick a Telus SIM in my RAZR, full bars. There's just something going on with my RAZR and the Bell network...

I've had 3 of the XT925 so far, all on Bell, all had normal LTE speeds and connections.

Could you think of why my Razr would have difficulty connecting only to the Bell network? I'm in downtown Halifax and as I said every combination of Bell SIM in other phones and other carrier SIMS in my RAZR work except the Bell SIM in the RAZR. It's just incredibly frustrating that this isn't working. Bell support has also been useless with them refusing to help because it's not a Bell phone at first, followed by them just being puzzled why I'm not getting service. Would something like flashing a modem fix this? Any help is appreciated.

[Q] GSM Support

Anyone know if the Verizon version that was just released also supports GSM and if it's unlocked. I'm planning to use it mainly on Verizon, but would like to be able to pop a SIM card in if I travel.
From what I've read on other Verizon phones - they have to leave 4g devices unlocked as part of their winning the 700MHz spectrum.
I am curious about this too. I am on AT&T and know that the Canadian version should be fully compatible even with LTE, but its much harder to purchase than a VZW one.
Verizon iphone 5 is GSM unlocked and can be used on at&t and T-mobile
Old Razr's and Razr Maxx's were GSM unlocked but only for international usage (were locked for at&t and T-mobile)
Not sure where our new Razr's fall!
i put a tmobile sim card its not working... it can see then sim card and the number but does not connect
^^^ Same here, put it in my AT&T Sim to check, no luck. This phone might be like the previous droids, just unlocked for international. I wonder how Verizon allowed to lock their android devices, but keep the iPhone 5 unlocked. Isn't the FCC requirement required them to have all there LTE phones unlocked?
Anyone know a work around? I'm looking to purchase one to use on t-mobile..

No unlock code prompt.. Just states that the AT&T SIM is invalid. The phone lets you load 2 AT&T APNs but nothing happens. Toggling the radio between global and GSM doesn't do anything. I have came to the conclusion Verizon locked down US GSM capabilities.
Sent from my DROID RAZR MAXX HD!...
I guess it's only a matter of time before there are unlocks online.
It sounds like it does in fact have the GSM radio which means it's at least physically possible that it could work on other networks.
The SIM slot is already unlocked, the reason it does not work on U.S. carriers is because Verizon blocked their MNC.

I wonder what the loophole that Verizon get to use to locked their android LTE phones from use of other us gsm carriers, well the ones that contain gsm radios. I know the recent spectrum deal required them to leave the sim slots unlocked, but was that only referring to the iPhones ? I know the 5 is unlocked and they can hard lock the phone from accessing us gsm carriers easily through a carrier update if they wanted to, example remember sprint iPhone 4S , all the phones released before nov 11 2011 where already gsm unlocked to work on any gsm carrier including us ones. Then they pushed a carrier update to lock the previous phones that were unlocked.
LTE in other Europe?
Hey,
I'd like to buy a Verizon DRHD Maxx to use on EE's LTE network in the UK (1800MHz), but also to use on Verizon when I'm stateside. From what I can gather, it has the physical radios for both 2G and 3G on GSM networks, and is hopefully SIM unlocked for international SIM cards like the original Droid Razr is.
However, on GSM arena, they have only listed 700MHz LTE support - do we know if it is capable of supporting other bands also please (in Europe we use 800/1800/2600)?

These are the bands that the Droid RAZR MAXX HD (and RAZR HD) support (as taken from the Motorola site).
CDMA 800 1900, LTE B13, WCDMA 850 900 1900 2100, GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900 EVDO Rev. A, HSDPA 21.1 Mbps (Cat 14), HSUPA 5.76 Mbps.
Doesn't look like any bands other than 700 are supported.
BTW, are the specs for the RAZR HD the European spec? The Canadian one supports 700/1700/2100 Mhz.
Hey,
Ah that's a bummer could it be that the DRHD is the same hardware as the Canadian version, but they have disabled the 1700 and 2100 MHz band support?
I am unsure if the European or Global versions are pentaband - I'm just going by what GSMArena is saying at the moment (which could well be wrong).
I would really like to have a device that can support LTE on both sides of the pond though
Thanks,
Su
I reaaaallly want to get a Razr MAXX HD, but unfortunately I live in Mexico where the main phone operator (Telcel) takes ages to release phones.
So I guess it's confirmed it does not work with ATT or T-Mobile, but is there any possibility anyone can test it with a GSM network outside the US to confirm that its only locked for the US?

Verizon's loop hole is that while utilizing LTE Band 13 requires the SIM slot to be unlocked, there are no bindings for them to have to make the device usable on other U.S. carriers.

MNCs are identifier codes that allows for devices to pick up the right host for its network utilization.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Network_Code
MNC blocking is usually done at the radio firmware, in this case, it is likely Verizon has MNC 150 and/or 260 blocked. While the phone can most likely see the signal, it does not allow the end user (The Operating System and the End User) to be able to see nor select it.

Yes it works in Europe
I was in Switzerland last week with a Razer HD and used it with Orange's prepaid service. I was getting a solid 10 mbs download on their HSPDA+ 21 network. The one annoying thing is it asks for the sim unlock code every time you restart the phone.

have a look here, http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Motorola-DROID-RAZR-MAXX-HD_id7484
look down the bottom of the page in the Technology section at what bands it supports, and then just look up what bands your carrier in france supports
im in the same boat myself, im either going to get the Razr i or else going to buy one of these from the states, even if i have to put up with fugly logos all over my phone, the battery would definitely be worth it!
the carrier im with here in Ireland works on 2100 MHz band UMTS and the specs on phonearena says it supports that band so it might be ok... im not 100% percent sure either though

did it ask for the code just in Europe or do you mean that is a problem thats there all the time?
I assume the phone is locked. A SIM unlocked code is needed when providers lock their phone and you need to enter a code to make it work with other providers sim card.
If your carrier uses the UTMS 2100MHz band, it should work. My carrier is using the 2100 MHz band also and I am having no problems.
If you do not know what frequency your carrier operates on, just post your carrier and we can help you.
Be aware that if your country has 3G dead spots (not really applicable for me) the phone will not work on the 2G network, if it is also operating on 2100Mhz. So, no 3G, no network.
Also, LTE WILL NOT work.
Finally, check if you need an unlock code

ah i was forgetting all about that sim lock. thanks for the reminder just did a quick search and so far iv only found a site that unlocks the RAZR HD, no MAXX so ill have to wait and find one of those first
also here in Ireland the 3 network is 3G and then they use Vodaphone's network for their 2G. which is the 900 & 1800 frequencies (and the MAXX HD supports those two) so would the phone switch down to those when there isnt an 3G available?

Hey,
I'm trying to verify if the phone will work globally while still here in the US. I have a few SIM cards that fit in the phone:
- VZW (provided with the phone)
- TMobile
- ATT
- Virgin Mobile Australia
When I put the Australian SIM card in the phone, it starts up OK and doesn't ask for an unlock code (but it does say something to the effect of the SIM is from an unknown carrier) but I can't get any signal and the phone # listed under about phone still shows my VZW phone #. The TMobile and ATT SIMs exhibit the same behavior, so perhaps this is to be expected...
Here's the strange thing, for the TMobile & ATT SIMs I see some Access Point Names listed under the networks option in settings. When I put the Australian SIM in, no APNs are listed. This is particularly odd because my older phone, a Droid Pro, shows an Australian APN when I put the SIM in that phone...
Can anyone else with some foreign SIM try this on the US/Verizon version and see what happens...? Is there any way to verify that the phone will work on foreign networks without leaving the US?
Thanks!
Dan
Currently I am using a Maxx HD in Australia using a local sim and have had no problems. You do NOT need an unlock code. Just insert the sim and you are good to go.

Hi Koala,
As you mentioned you have the HD Maxx version, can you confirm or deny that the 4G part of the phone works on either Telstra, or Optus here in Australia? I'm reading conflicting reports are this.
This site says no to both networks of the non Maxx version (mobicity.com.au/motorola-xt925-razr-hd.html]), yet Telstra is selling it as a 4G phone. Motorala say the HD Maxx "isn't compatible" with Australian 4G networks.
So, I'm thinking that some where, someone is telling porkies...? I hope that makes sense...
Cheers,
Steve

There are 2 models of razr hd:
- DROID RAZR HD (HSPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 and LTE 700)
- RAZR HD (HSPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 LTE 800 / 1800 / 2600)
As you can see there is a diference is in LTE band, therefore DROID RAZR HD LTE will not work in Europe 3G will work but not 4G!! because in Europe there are different bands for LTE.
The easiest way to pick the right one is to look at the color of the box, DROID RAZR HD is in black one and RAZR HD is in red box.

Hey,
Apologies for the late response. The battery life on LTE is definitely shorter than on 3G only. I was in NYC last week, and was pretty much getting full bars of LTE signal constantly... was just about making it through the day.
The phone does indeed get full HSPA+ in areas where LTE is not available (although it frequently drops back to Edge due to T-Mo's crappy network ). On 3G+ only, the phone easily makes it through the day (usually have 20-30% at the end of the day, after ~2hrs screen time).
I am annoyed that this device hasn't seen any upgrades since January (4.1.2) though... crossing fingers and toes for 4.4, but perhaps in vain
Cheers,

Verizon's LTE is a different radio band, the 925 won't work on VZW LTE without some serious hardware hackery.

I have an unlocked Motorola xt925 and from the first day that I connected it to T- Mobile US regretted this choice. The problem was off course the 4G Lte. I didn' t want to pay their 70$ plan to have unlimited 4G because they don' t really have a 4G coverage so can' t provide this service. More than that my problem was for long time in getting a 4G speed in the phone. Fixed only after 4 or 5 th call.
Why I am posting this ???. Let's say that I was so pissed off on that problem that I rooted and unlocked the phone bootloader, installed almost all androids that are for this phone , tried everything that could find on the forums.
And now I have always, not really, a 4G connection in my phone. Without hack or illegal stuff.
I tried this in every android and it worked.
In this moment I have a 50 $ plan so only 500 mb on 4G, rest of them being or is supose to be only 2G.
Trick: in jelly beam and now in CyanogenMod 11 there is A way to select your Preferred network type. 2G, 3G, 4G.
If you know you are in a 4G area but you don' t have this speed try to select 2G, wait about 30 seconds, in jelly beam till connection is changing in blue and after that go back and select 4G network.
In some ROM there isn't 4 G selection. So I was dialling *#*#4636#*#* and select there Lte/ Gsm connection. After the phone is showing 4G or Lte check the internet speed.
If someone need the prove can provide some screenshots
Now. The problem is that I have to do that everytime when I am loosing the signal. So if the modem will make a 2G connection and after that 4G it will be OK. But it is not like this. Phone is jumping to 4G and the speed is only 0.13 Mb.
OK. I know I am not paying to have more but their service is not as it is show.
So. I would like to know if someone else can do that. Select 2G wait a little bit and select 4G and wait to have the connection. Usually in 2 minutes it is OK.
2. Can someone give an idea how to make the phone to make a 2 G connection and after that the 4 G.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi, thank you for being a guinea pig So, LTE works, but how is the battery life? Does the phone easily pull through the whole day? Also, when LTE is not available does it work on T-mo's 3G/4G network? Thanks!

Are you really getting LTE and 4g on this phone by just unlocking it and putting a t-mobile sim card init, if lte and 4g is in the area???
Hey guys for those that will interest, by searching around I find out about this seller http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNLOCK-CODE...25293983?ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123#viTabs
They are the cheapest I have encountered so far. there is a thread at the atrix hd forums that many have tried them and it works

Using Razr Maxx HD on T-Mobile USA?

So I did the radio hack using radio comm to enable the radio on the Maxx HD (XT926) to work with USA GSM carriers, I installed CM for XT925 on my XT926, I even put in a non working T-Mobile Sim in the phone and the phone displays the T-Mobile name in the navigation drawer and on the lock screen. I'm gonna go to a T-Mobile store close by me in NY today, now for my question : is there anything I gotta do in settings or anywhere else on the phone before I take it to the T-Mobile to activate the Sim card. I'm planning on going for there unlimited 4g $70 plan, will there 4g work with the phone? Also what do I tell the sales rep when I get there? Thanks

Ok so i was able to do the whole process online and i activated the simcard and i now my phone is connected but i'm only receiving edge not 4G, i tried changing the settings to lte but all i get is edge, what can i to fix this?
Afaik, TMO uses different LTE band (frequencies) than Verizon so you can get GSM (GPRS/EDGE) or UMTS (HSDPA) depending of the coverage. In NYC most of the time UMTS is available.
OK, I understand that and I'm fine with just using HSPDA+ but the thing is that I'm not even able to use that. Anything In settings I have to toggle for it to work.

One, regular way is from settings, more, mobile networks, preferred networks, select GSM/UMTS (probably you did that already). Second what you can try is to tap on select network and select UMTS only. Last option is type *#*#4636#*#*, phone information and set preferred network. Be careful with this hidden menu!
I don't get an option to set to gsm/umts I only get these options:

Which software version do you have?
Try to select, 3G. That's UMTS (HSDPA(+))

Try what I wrote you. One more option, instead of network operator auto selection, try to search and select manually. Sometimes phone shows two options for the same operator, one GSM and one UMTS.
Btw, I'm in NYC right now, using TMO and connected to H+.

The only two options I get is T-Mobile & AT&T. I'm thinking that it's probably just where I live I'm gonna leave my neighborhood in a few so I'm gonna see if I'll get H+ in another area. What rom are you using by the way?
Update: I now have H+, the problem is only in my particular area. So happy. Here I thought I spent 70 bucks to connect the phone for nothing.
Thanks for the help.

Wouldn't be for nothing, you still have GPRS/EDGE
Because I'm "lucky" with locked bootloader, I'm using stock JB rooted, hardly debloated by myself and Apex launcher.
True but you can barely do anything with edge. Why is it that 3g doesn't work with the phone is it because of the frequency bands are different?
Damn locked bootloader sucks, but hopefully someone will find and release an exploit once Motorola finally releases the 4.4 update.

You're right about EDGE. Have you ever tried GPRS?

Do you mean 4G (LTE)? If you're asking why you cannot connect to 3G in your area, then is probably coverage problem. 3G usually works on higher radio frequency than 2g, so propagation is worse.

I don't have hope for that. 4.4 update could even prevent root. But, maybe Motorola (Verizon) will offer bootloader unlocking option for EOL phones. When warranty will expired anyway. That would be really nice move and bring a lot of good advertising.

The frequencies are different. Razr HD only supports 850/900/1900/2100
For HSDPA on T-Mobile you also need the 2100 AND the 1700 band. This is their largest coverage band. If you go to a major metropolitan area with a refarmed 2100 band coverage then you will get H+ on T-Mobile Otherwise, you're stuck on edge.
Sorry man, it's pure hardware...

The G Pro 2 F350S Supports ATT LTE

700mhz..right out of the box:

So, if you're interesting in importing one, make sure it's the F350S version. I bought mine on Ebay. It also supports att's HSPA bands and Edge bands as well.
Why not just wait until it hits the US and save money?

Cause pricing can be similar and the device can be altered from its current state aka crippled.

I cant see your pics so not sure if they are screenies of speedtests? Be curious to see what it gets on LTE.
If it works on att I assume then it would work fine on Rogers network here in canada since we are running the same mhz as att.
I searched that model and anywhere I see it 700mhz is not listed in it specs?
I see it does it get 2600mhz though which it nice.
Bootloader locked on your model?
If you could pm me the buyer you got it from that would be great.
Thx.

Any proofs? Screenshots? Your post is bad formatted, you should include links into url tags instead of IMG tags
Does it support all the LTE bands? Does it support band 7? European band 38? You know, the xda read not only Americans

Yeah screenies are helpful for sure.
That said of course there are ppl from all over the world on xda but the thread title kinda mentions ATT specifically.

I updated my post, apologies for the incorrect IMG tags.
I bought it from here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/231176080421?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
The network bands are incorrect on the ebay listing, but if you did research, (like I did) engadget and android central mention that it works with ATT LTE: http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/04/lg-g-pro-2-review/
it has pentaband LTE: (700/850/1800/2100/2600), so YES, it does work Billy Madison.
Also, Tri-band HSPA: (850/1900/2100).
As far as bootloader support goes, it's a carrier model (SK Telecom), so I assume it's locked.

The LG F350K that I have supports the following
LTE: 700/900/1800/2100/2600
WCDMA: 850/1900/2100
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900
I can confirm this 100%.
I get working 2G/3G and 4G on UK networks using 1800Mhz for 4G
