Hey,
I had this problem now for very long time (actually more than 1year) and I tried all the solutions that were proposed in other threads specially this one that reduced the number of reboot but not totally
What I remarked is that when the phone is on the edge of the cell on 3G and trying to move to 2G it will automatically reset especially when the battery is below 50%.
I tried locking the phone on 3G and the number of reset has reduced but the downside of this is that I don't have most of the time connectivity (all the way in the metro for example).
Does anybody know if there is custom ROM or Kernel or Radio (I don't which part do control this) that deal with this issue?
I was running ARHD 6.7(and previous versions) with recommended radio till this morning and now I'm on CM9.
I changed the battery to Anker 1700 so the issue is not coming from the battery.
My phone was bought from French Operator Bytel (SN : SH169V..... if it helps)
Sorry for this long Message
Have you tried get Ril? It's an application in the play store that's a great app. It will let you know if your ril is matching your radio, and if it is not matching it recommends and downloads a matching ril. This really helped me a lot. I was getting a pretty weak signal and found out my ril was not matching my radio. Once I downloaded the matching ril, my signal went from one bar to four and five bars! I was pretty amazed on what a difference it made for me. It wouldn't hurt to give it a try and see if it helps you. If not you can also change your radio and ril yourself and see if you can come up with a better signal. Thing with radio is we all live in different areas so it must be experimented with by you because what works for me might not work in your area. You would start by looking in the generic ics radios and matching rils. Remember your radio now so you can return to it if need be. But before I'd change my whole radio do try Get ril. Hopefully it will make a positive difference for you! Also I believe you must be s off to change radio. Don't know if your s on, or off? But give get ril a try and see how that goes. Best wishes. Hope this was helpful.

I tried the App GetRIL and it says RIL/baseband is matching (RIL 4.0.0013HMQ, 11.69.3504.00P_11.22.3504...)
Thanks anyway :good:.
I'm just wondering if it's not a HW or firmware defect on the serie of my phone (no limitation on the power usage during IRAT HO).
BTW I didnt get a reboot with CM9 till now but I'm in well covered area, I will see if it crashes again when i'm on the edge of the cell.
Had exactly the same thing last week, purchased a new battery and now the problem has gone away
Looking at the old battery you could see it was swollen
I picked up a battery new for £5 off ebay
I have already changed the battery and the issue is still happening. Anyway with the new ROM it looks stable so far.
I will test it for some days and see if it will happen again
CM Definitely solved the issue

It looks like it's something related to Sense based ROM. with CM it's not happening anymore
Hi walo1,
Which version of CM are you using?
I've installed CM9 on my Sensation some months ago and it worked for a while. But now I'm getting random reboots again...

Hi,
I was using CM9 Opensensation ROM XDA Page and I never got any random reset
Three days ago I flashed CM10 Opensensation2 and I started getting Random reset again
I have no idea what can be the cause but at least with CM9 I didn't see any reset after 1 week usage. I have to go back to CM9.

Yes I tried open sensation myself and although I didn't get rebooting, I had NO data connection!! Have you tried some of the other jelly bean roms? I really like paranoid Android by Dragun. It's fast and smooth like butter with tons of available customization! I have had zero problems with this rom. I'm using version 17. With kernel 3.0.53, and my battery life is excellent! You might want to give it a try? Best wishes to you.

I think I'll try Paranoid Android too then. And that way I'll try JB too.
It's radio Issue
Finally I found what the problem is coming from
Changing the radio to the latest European version two month ago made the phone much more stable with using various versions of CM10.
The version I'm using now is : 11.76A.3504.00_11.24A.3504.31_M with the RIL provided by default in the rom(it shouldn't be impacting)
Hope this will also solve your problem.

I am having trouble finding a radio that works with this ROM.
The main problem I am having with the radios that I have tried is:
Weak WiFi signal and GPS not connecting fast enough or not connecting at all.
So could someone please recommend to me a radio that they have working well with this ROM.
Thanks.

What radio are you running currently?
What RIL are you using?
Have you tried "double-flashing" the radio/ril?
Have you rebooted at least twice after radio-related changes?

I've been having this same problem aswell, I have yet to figure it out, and I don't think anyone here knows the solution. I start to wonder if HTC has more than one wifi antenna going around. Or maybe something is just wrong with ours.
The only thing though is, it only does this with AOSP roms, sense roms are just fine. I say give one a shot.

Dont know why so many are having problems with radio's.. I have flashed all nightlies with no changes to radios or ril and everything works great....just have always done a clean install and all is good...........
...I've flashed kernels that were less than optimum for WiFi...try flashing a different kernel?

Me neither. Seems like someone's always having some sort of problem. I have the feeling the common denominator may be your last sentence.... Clean install.
I think a lot of people are looking for some magical power to give them super ultra lightning fast data speeds and 1/2 second gps lock times with 1/2 meter accuracy. Or something.

Morning all
I'm one of the unfortunates affected by the problem with 2.3.3 version 1.47. When the phone is connected to a 3G or HSDPA network, all the 2G functions stop working. Well documented, well known, and no sign of a fix until this week when it looks like 2.3.5 and Sense 3.0 are being released.
My DS has been stock until this last week, and I've been running it with mobile data turned off just to make sure that calls and SMS work - which isn't too smart for a smartphone
Since the problem is definitely with 1.47, I was hoping a new ROM would solve the issues. I was recommended CyanogenMod, and thought I'd give it a go. So, I got used Revolutionary, got S-OFF and installed CWM Recovery. Went off to the CyanogenMod website and realised they dont have any stable builds for the Desire S at the moment
So, having had a look around here, and realised there are equally good alternatives, I think I'm going to try Virtuous instead. That's all fine, and I'm quite looking forward to it.
Will it fix the problems though? Anyone?
I don't suffer from this problem. But I can seriously recommend virtuous. It just works perfectly and when I was using it I had no bugs whatsoever
Also I would recommend cyanogen if your not a big fan of sense

I realize many of you see this as a dumb question. But I see a lot of posts about radios. I've tried looking around the web what it is but couldn't really find good explaining information. I see a lot of posts for flashing the radio and a lot of different versions.
I'm running MIUI on my Sensation 4G and if radio is something I need to flash then I want to know what it is before I try flashing and brick my phone. So I've managed to find the version I have so if someone can point me the right direction I'd be very grateful.
So the main question is - WHAT IS RADIO?
So this is what I got
Radio - 10.14.9035.01_M
the radio pretty much just has to do with the wireless connectivity of ur phone, so ur wifi, bluetooth, 3g all controlled by your phones radio.
you shouldnt have to flash a new radio for every rom, if your facing problems, and think a new radio could fix them then you could try a new radio if you wanted.
hope this helped
Lol oh yea definitely! very simply put too! I just was wondering why there's so many versions and chance of bricking dam thing.

Flashing the radio is just about the only sure fire way of bricking it.. It's one of those things people are most skeptical about flashing. No nandroid will save you with an improperly flashed radio
EDIT: I've been flashing roms for a long time now and not once have I ever had to flash a new radio.

OK. I installed the HD Revolution 3.6.9 ROM days ago and have 2 major issues. As I am a new member, I am unable to post in the developmental section. Grateful for the OP to ask the question as I am also seeking to know "what radio is".
Although, I also want to ask - what is a kernel?
I believe thousands of members installed that HD Revolution 3.6.9 ROM and I couldn't find any reference for bluetooth and mms issues.
My phone can only detect my Nokia phone, my Plantronics bluetooth M100 is undetectable.
I am also unable to send MMS and yes, I tried the original settings, called the network and played with different settings but problem persists.
I checked the Hardware Information of the phone and it says "Bluetooth address - unavailable"
Kernel is a bridge between applications and the actual data processing done at the hardware level. So basically kernel tells all the hardware what to do (overclocked processors, undervolted batteries and etc) So far best one I've tried for Sensation 4G is the 2.6.35.14 Trinity S4G. Processor is overclocked to 1.7Ghz from stock 1.2 Ghz and the battery life is great!

Well that I'm not sure how accurate this statement is. That's why I started this thread just to know what it is. But from all the info I gathered online, you don't really need to flash a radio. Every thread with radios I saw that ppl will put a warning that you might brick your phone. So, my phone works great, never had any problems so I'll stay on the safe side (for now) and just do more research

Good decision..
I've rooted my inspire and my nook color and have custom roms on them. I'm used to the android system and how it works. I was just wondering what rom would be suggested for my inspire. I just got the phone secondhand from a friend and I'm not sure what people consider the best rom for the inspire as there are always like 40+ for each system and only 2-3 are good ones.
Thanks for the advice,
Potticus
I was also wondering if there as a way to boost my network signal. My iphone 4 gets full service in my bedroom but hte Inspire gets 1-3 or so. I'm running Android Revolution for the inspire btw.

There is no "Best ROM" its all personal preference. Theres Sense, AOSP, MIUI. Youll just have to try them and see for yourself. To boost your signal you can try flashing new radios+rils

Ok well, I've given Android revolution a shot, not for me. And I'm on Coredroid with the Lee kernal, But that confuses me a bit more. There is five different kernals to chose from?
As far as radios and rils, I've done my reading but that seems to be a total cluster**** as far as hunting down combos and what not. Could you direct me towards a combo that might work in the Southern states (Oklahoma to be exact) Also I've checked the guide and I've got to turn something or other off. I've turned off eng but not the other.
What might be the major differences shortly summarized between AOSP and MIUI and Sense. All I've tried is Sense to this point.
Read op of radio thread in the dev stickies. It will explain radio ril combos. As for a Rom its trial and error. Since the DHD has had more updates almost all of the roms for the inspire are based off of DHD roms. I personally beleive that anything based on an inspire Rom will give a better user experience as far as everything working the way it should. However the dhd roms have a lot more options. Att just did release our sense 3.0 Rom on the 31st so maybe we will see a little more inspire based roms going up. Still though we won't be seeing any sense 3.5 or higher roms based off of anything made specifically for the inspire and American data network. If you can sacrifice the sense interface than I would say hands down aosp is the way to go, but I myself am stuck on sense for now, and I HATE miui. But its all opinion.

I've been reading his thread, but I'm not sure I got the radio installed? I've tried going to bootloader but I can't seem to get it to work through his instructions.
"A. Radio - Download the PD98IMG.zip file. Place this file on the root of your SD card. Reboot to bootloader. When prompted, press the Volume Up button to install. Then reboot."
I'm not sure I'm getting the correct prompt or one at all.
I'm using coredroid until I can get all this figured out right now. (actually I'm going to ice sammich, thanks to the guy that posted it) I grabbed the latest ATT radio+ril combo for the inspire just as a starting point.
The only message i got from bootloader is "parsing the .zip" then it just goes back.
Woah! grabbed a different radio from the one I was trying, and it worked!(HTC-RIL 2.2.0160HM)
Going to install the RIL right now, let's hope we've made progress to better signal. Aswell as the ICS i'm going to load on it.
Usually when it just says parsing and goes back its either a bad download or an issue with the SD card

Only use radio. Don't flash the ril. Ril is included in Rom anyways. Ics is aosp so don't mess with the ril. It will mess things up. Ril is for sense roms.

Ok thanks, I put another copy of it on there and it worked. But the SD card is fine, I use it for nook flashes and whatnot.
I already did... but I'll reflash ICS now that you say that. Good call!
Am I safe to flash a few different radios over the next 2-3 weeks to check the connection without having to change anything else?

Yeah radios are fine to play with as long as you stick to inspire threads. Stay away from ones with rc data unless you know it matches all three radio/ril/rom.

That is the disadvantage to using roms that aren't supposed to run on our phones. Read up about Ics in the forums and see what issues are known and decide if you can live with them or if they can be fixed. There is a ton of information in these forums and pretty much already a thread for every question you could ask. That's why people say you just have to test them and and figure out which ones will work for you. The same goes for all the Rom/radio/ril combos. The radio thread is the best place but there are also many threads on the subject.

So far, I'm willing to deal with it. Just takes 20 minutes of reentering contacts into my phonebook. The phone number part wasn't an issue, just wondering if that was a problem.
And I just switched to the non RCdata radio at your suggestion.
My battery seems to be 100% better, I've lost 4% in the course of about 2 and a half hours.
I wanted to thank the developers of MR3 in this thread. Liquid, Jester, etc.
I'm a long time lurker of this forum since I got my Thunderbolt. I'm VERY VERY appreciative of the developers for creating a very functional ICS rom for the Thunderbolt. Shame on HTC and Verizon for sandbagging so long with what should be a very simple upgrade for them. I was running Thundershed for awhile but grew tired of the Gingerbread look and feel of Android. My friends all mostly have newer phones with ICS, and I couldn't believe that it was supposed to be out in August and it's now mid-October and it's still not out.
To my surprise, I log on to here and see that an ICS ROM had been released.
My only issues with this ROM are random restarts and the white screen error in Facebook/Gmail/etc. I don't really use the video camera much in general; could you use an aftermarket app, or is it broken period?
Otherwise, I absolutely LOVE this and will never go back to Verizon's bloated software. Even when an OTA is released with ICS I won't go back. My phone is running much faster and much better than with Sense and Gingerbread. With data off I had a 10% decrease in battery in 7 hours; with data on and normal use I'll get maybe 5 hours out of a charge on this ROM. About normal for this phone and it's absolutely terrible battery life with the stock battery.
I have it overclocked to 1.5ghz running interactiveX as my governor. It runs beautifully, other than those two minor issues I pointed out above. I haven't experienced any data drops or anything out of the sort like that.

I second this thread.
A major thanks goes out to all of you who develop, in any way, for the Thunderbolt community. This even includes testers.
To answer your questions...
The video and front camera are broken even with an aftermarket app and will remain broken, most likely, until Verizon releases the OTA. From the OTA, our awesome developers will then be able to fix camera issues and many other issues that will make their ROM's 100% stable.
Also, if you get random reboots, you may want to flash to a different radio.
If you are currently running the OTA radios from the 2.11.605.19 software and still get these reboots, try flashing the combo radio and hopefully the reboots will vanish or, at least, happen less often.
If you go to your settings, about phone, software information, more, and look at the baseband version...
If the numbers you see are:
1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
Then you are on the OTA 2.11.605.19 radios, which is my recommendation for the radios to use with this ROM. If these are the radio numbers you see, try the combo radio. If the numbers you see under your phones baseband version is not:
1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
Then it may be:
1.48.00.0930w_3, 0.01.78.0916w_3
If it is:
1.48.00.0930w_3, 0.01.78.0916w_3
Try flashing the 2.11.605.19 OTA radios found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605557
If you have the 2.11.605.19 radios, though, try flashing the combo radio found here:

Definitely want to ditto this thread. Thanks for continuing to support the Thunderbolt. I was on the verge of retiring the Thunderbolt. ICS has brought new the Tbolt new life though!
thanks for the links. I'm going to try upgrading tonight and see if that helps. I notice you flash the radio in hboot. If I do a nandroid backup, does it also backup the radio (so I can restore it)? Or if I **** up, will it be permanently bricked?
Ditto to all that has been said. Thank You to all who made this happen, including HTC and Verizon. Their inaction drove me to decide to root and find alternatives. I've been incredibly pleased with MR3.
Thanks all!

If you backup that ROM after flashing the radio, it will back up the ROM. Hboot is a whole different thing than the recovery. That radio is downloaded to the phone and will automatically run on any ROM after its downloaded, even if you start from scratch. But flashing any of those two radios will not brick you on any ROM. Worst case being you won't have signal or data until you flash different radios again.
Say if you upgraded to the newer radios, and then you flash a ROM based on an older software version, you won't brick. In fact, you may not ever experience any issues. Maybe just signal changes or random signal drops.
But no, it won't brick you. It's almost impossible to brick a Thunderbolt.
I recommend after flashing the new radios, immediately go and either change the name from PG05IMG to something custom, move into a different folder that's off of the root of the SD card, or just delete it once flashed.
This is for in a such case where you need to get back into recovery from hboot, it won't prompt you to install the radio again. Because if you had to get into recovery from hboot, it wouldn't allow you to since it runs a check for the PG05IMG files first... and with that being said... I was always told to never flash the same radio twice without changing to a new one first.

i dont' see why these ROMs get so much acclaim... when i tried LiquidSmooth it wouldn't stay connected to the Internet. tried to toggle wifi and 3G/4G. nothing works and i have to reboot the phone every time i want to use the Internet.
Liquid MR3: the setup crashed and now the ROM won't even come all the way up...
unless my phone's broken or something (going to Verizon tomorrow to reflash and check it), i say they're both absolute garbage. i've had much better luck with ROMs on other phones.

Back up 9 posts and you'll see a link to a video tutorial on how to flash a different radio. You'll even see 2 links to 2 different radios to flash and try.

well i reflashed Liquid this morning and it didn't crash this time, connected fine via wifi and setup completed properly.
all of my radio issues were on the old version (not sure if there's a difference in radios or whatnot), but if it acts up again i will try your recommendations. thanks a lot.

ah i see what happened now.
the first time i flashed it, i cleared /data after the flash before i brought the OS up, but you've included the launcher as a user app and not a system app. was this intentional? a user could easily screw up by uninstalling the launcher and have no way to interact with the OS. shouldn't there be a default launcher embedded in the system programs?
i'm an Android dev, but my understanding of system development is limited, but if i'm not mistaken, any Android ROM should come with a default launcher that is not uninstallable and has no icon as a backup launcher just in case.
He did install it that way so if the user wants to install their own launcher and remove the default. Its simple to make the new one a system app. All that has to be done is move the apk to /system and it is uninstallable.
