I've rooted my inspire and my nook color and have custom roms on them. I'm used to the android system and how it works. I was just wondering what rom would be suggested for my inspire. I just got the phone secondhand from a friend and I'm not sure what people consider the best rom for the inspire as there are always like 40+ for each system and only 2-3 are good ones.
Thanks for the advice,
Potticus
I was also wondering if there as a way to boost my network signal. My iphone 4 gets full service in my bedroom but hte Inspire gets 1-3 or so. I'm running Android Revolution for the inspire btw.

There is no "Best ROM" its all personal preference. Theres Sense, AOSP, MIUI. Youll just have to try them and see for yourself. To boost your signal you can try flashing new radios+rils

Ok well, I've given Android revolution a shot, not for me. And I'm on Coredroid with the Lee kernal, But that confuses me a bit more. There is five different kernals to chose from?
As far as radios and rils, I've done my reading but that seems to be a total cluster**** as far as hunting down combos and what not. Could you direct me towards a combo that might work in the Southern states (Oklahoma to be exact) Also I've checked the guide and I've got to turn something or other off. I've turned off eng but not the other.
What might be the major differences shortly summarized between AOSP and MIUI and Sense. All I've tried is Sense to this point.
Read op of radio thread in the dev stickies. It will explain radio ril combos. As for a Rom its trial and error. Since the DHD has had more updates almost all of the roms for the inspire are based off of DHD roms. I personally beleive that anything based on an inspire Rom will give a better user experience as far as everything working the way it should. However the dhd roms have a lot more options. Att just did release our sense 3.0 Rom on the 31st so maybe we will see a little more inspire based roms going up. Still though we won't be seeing any sense 3.5 or higher roms based off of anything made specifically for the inspire and American data network. If you can sacrifice the sense interface than I would say hands down aosp is the way to go, but I myself am stuck on sense for now, and I HATE miui. But its all opinion.

I've been reading his thread, but I'm not sure I got the radio installed? I've tried going to bootloader but I can't seem to get it to work through his instructions.
"A. Radio - Download the PD98IMG.zip file. Place this file on the root of your SD card. Reboot to bootloader. When prompted, press the Volume Up button to install. Then reboot."
I'm not sure I'm getting the correct prompt or one at all.
I'm using coredroid until I can get all this figured out right now. (actually I'm going to ice sammich, thanks to the guy that posted it) I grabbed the latest ATT radio+ril combo for the inspire just as a starting point.
The only message i got from bootloader is "parsing the .zip" then it just goes back.
Woah! grabbed a different radio from the one I was trying, and it worked!(HTC-RIL 2.2.0160HM)
Going to install the RIL right now, let's hope we've made progress to better signal. Aswell as the ICS i'm going to load on it.
Usually when it just says parsing and goes back its either a bad download or an issue with the SD card

Only use radio. Don't flash the ril. Ril is included in Rom anyways. Ics is aosp so don't mess with the ril. It will mess things up. Ril is for sense roms.

Ok thanks, I put another copy of it on there and it worked. But the SD card is fine, I use it for nook flashes and whatnot.
I already did... but I'll reflash ICS now that you say that. Good call!
Am I safe to flash a few different radios over the next 2-3 weeks to check the connection without having to change anything else?

Yeah radios are fine to play with as long as you stick to inspire threads. Stay away from ones with rc data unless you know it matches all three radio/ril/rom.

Ok how do I know it matches up? Also, I'm on ATT and it won't read my contacts off my sim card or show me my phone number and carrier in the software informations/settings part of hte rom.
Currently I'm using the recommended radio(26.06.06.30_M AT&T) with the inspire .5 mod found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131256

That is the disadvantage to using roms that aren't supposed to run on our phones. Read up about Ics in the forums and see what issues are known and decide if you can live with them or if they can be fixed. There is a ton of information in these forums and pretty much already a thread for every question you could ask. That's why people say you just have to test them and and figure out which ones will work for you. The same goes for all the Rom/radio/ril combos. The radio thread is the best place but there are also many threads on the subject.

So far, I'm willing to deal with it. Just takes 20 minutes of reentering contacts into my phonebook. The phone number part wasn't an issue, just wondering if that was a problem.
And I just switched to the non RCdata radio at your suggestion.
My battery seems to be 100% better, I've lost 4% in the course of about 2 and a half hours.

Just got my new Inspire 4G (at&t). I'm going to root (obviously the stock is unusable) but I am very confused. I'm going to use Ace Hack kit to Root, etc. I keep seeing posts about flashing the Radio as well. Do I need to? I'm in Manhattan with decent reception.
IS there a Dalingrin kernel that works on Inspire? If not, what OC kernel is best?
Also, I'm thinking of using CM7 or LeeDroid. Any pros or cons for either? Must I change the radio with either?
Thanks lads, cheers m8s!
You may need to change your radio if you don't have the 06.06.30 radio and LeeDroid is my favorite sense ROM if I ever go back to sense and cm7 is excellent smooth as butter but I like MIUI better. If you have a chance try it out you won't regret it. And Leedroid sense kernel is the best for sense my opinion and Lord kernel for AOSP is AMAZING

i also came from aria.. i never changed no radio, kept using the same radio that hack kit installs it was running fine but i just recently changed it to new att radio just for the sake of it....not that i needed it...
More often then not you wont need to flash a radio even if the rom says recommended. It's just just that recommended. Stay with the stock radio and see how it preforms.
Welcome.
I came from the Aria too and I think you'll love the Inspire. Since you're coming from Aria then I'm sure you're familiar with ATTN1 and his IRC channel; you won't find a better bunch to help you. Read up on the rooting process. It is more complicated than the Aria, but the payoff is greater in that you get true S-OFF and a wide open platform to experiment on once you're done.
I rooted my first Inspire manually using the cyanogen wiki guide:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=AT&T_Inspire_4G:_Rooting
The hack kit essentially automates this for you, but it doesn't hurt to read over the above guide to get an idea what's going on. Read and re-read the effen manual in the hack kit too. In a nutshell, HTC locked it down pretty good, but the chink in their armor was that it is essentially the same as a DesireHD and with a little trickery, you can get the Inspire to "downgrade" itself to an older DHD ROM that was the basis for all the rooting work done on the DHD way back when. Once "downgraded" the gfree utility frees it up (and really frees it up opening the carrier lock and SIM lock and giving you true S-OFF capability). From there, you can install any of the many ROMs available for this beast and have a ton of fun.
Is the inspire the official aria upgrade phone? Seems like more and more people myself included have come over from that phone. as people have said though the radio thing is up for debate I've switched to the newer at&t one and haven't had any issues but have heard people take both sides on the matter. I have to say for starters such with the one you start with it's always possible to change it latter.

Used the Ace Hack kit. Done and rooted in a few minutes. Awesome work lads! Love 'really' owning my phones.
As for the Aria-to-Inspire upgrades people are doing lots of, my change was necessitated by a facedown drop that smashed my screen into a gajillion pieces.
Cheers m8s!

Well, as far as ATT is concerned, its a superior HTC phone. So if your an HTC fan, it would be the natural choice.
Or if you're a disgruntled ex-captivate owner, like me.
Agreed it would be an upgrade from the aria. And from the captivated to in IMHO
It's an upgrade from the LG EXPO as well.

I must agree it was certainly an upgrade especially since the aria has only just gotten a means to get s-off. Its awesome to have this much control over the phone.

Okay so I was on a few different LTE devices for a while (Charge and Revo) , and I am about to be back on a Thunderbolt in a few days.
When I was originally on the Tbolt, it was April, we barely had a Gingerbread Leak and I believe MR2 had been leaking around.
My question to you guys is, what's the best root method currently (ADB, or Revolutionary?) and also....
What radio should I be on when I get the device to be able to enjoy most of the roms out there. I'm hoping to be able to enjoy some Gingerbread.
Sorry for the newbness as I have been a crack flasher with Odin and other Samsung stuff that I completely lost track of Tbolt development.

haha, what a coincidence, i just got done reading your entire thread.
So basically its the same as before.. all GB based roms are working on ANY MR2 radio.
Gotcha
What radio do you recommend? at the time when I left the Tbolt, MR2 was causing reboots on people.
Also, is the recovery that revolutionary comes with a decent one in terms of being able to perform backups, etc?

best radio is subjective.
some people for some reason still believe radios from 6 months ago are better than current ones.

The most recent CWM is good, but the early 5.x releases had some issues. Not sure what the newest one is. I'm still on 3.something... cuz it just works.
There's a lot of opinion in radios. Right now I'm using the RUU 1.70 CDMA radio with the RUU 2.11.605.3 LTE radio. Generally there's not a big difference. I'd say the 2.10 and newer radios, including the 1.70 radios, are probably the most popular at the moment.
I seem to get better download speeds with the 802 radio than the 906. Not sure about the lte one yet though. Is there a combined release of the 906 for cdma and lte

The radio could be anyone of the GB radios. Best bet is to take a few for a drive and see what works best for you. I use the 802 with good results. I used Revolutionary and everything was soooooo easy. The recovery in revolutionary is very easy too. The only big question is what ROM to use. I would suggest to try the one that lasts a long time (name omitted because of a spat between this forum and their Devs). I hope you can read beween the lines. And there's a host of AOSP ROM's too. Good luck and let us know what you choose.

I just saw this http://www.phonearena.com/news/ROM-brings-Ice-Cream-Sandwich-to-HTC-Desire-HD_id33380 from PhoneArena and it looks like this ROM is fully supported for the Inspire 4g. My wife won't let me flash any more ICS roms on her Inspire any more and wants to keep the latest stock debloated GB rom from AT&T since it's stable and fast. I was wondering if anyone had tried this rom or know of a better more stable ICS&Sense rom to try to convince to let me flash on it for her.
Here is the XDA link from PhoneArena http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531218
I would suggest that you read the last half of the posted pages, then make a decision, if you will look on the DHD forums, there are a few Sense 4 ROMS with most things working, all have a few bugs right now. It is just a matter of if you can live with a few quirks and update your phone as they get things fixed.
It's for his wife. It is best not to flash any ICS roms for now. Wait between two to four weeks if you want an ICS sense rom or the JB roms. There will be bugs and she is not going to be happy, they never are.
My assumption is that by then the ICS/Jb roms should have a minimal of bugs.
In the meantime read through the threads and check what you would like. I doubt she will show any interest for now.

Thank you, I have been reading the dev threads in the Inspire section and havn't seen many that are as stable as the one I saw on phone arena, I didn't know that the desire HD roms would work on the inspire 4g thought the Inspire had updated hardware on it, there seems to be a lot more ICS sense roms on the desire HD thread I wonder if they all work and how stable they are on the Inspire 4g. It would be easier if my wife would let me flash them to try them out but the 1st ICS rom I flashed had alot of things broken and were buggy and she got mad at me. Any info on a good stable ICS sense rom for inspire 4g would be great thanks again.
PS if the desire hd ICS sense roms work on the Inspire 4g why aren't they posted in Inspire threads?

Separate devices, separate threads. Every now and then they do post a rom in both threads.
Regarding the Roms over the dhd thread and compatibility - most of them come with the required files for them to work on the Inspire, or they would link what else needs to be flashed in the OP (Original Post - First Page), as some also do over here in the Inspire section. However, there is one rom that was released today (can't remember the name of it) which the sound (I believe it was the sound) won't work on the inspire. The menu button doesn't work on either of the devices, the inspire and dhd.
Regarding blackout, can't remember what the bugs were/are, but if you are not familiar with flashing I would stay clear from that one for a while. It needs to be flashed a certain way, quite easy - simply it consists of doing the full wipe within the aroma installer, when it finishes choose "no" when it prompts you to reboot - do a manual reboot and should work. And do not download from dev host.
The latest release from randomblame - B14, has sound issues. A previous version may work but I can't recall what bugs the other ones have. Same issue goes for - I believe it's B4 of the AOPK version.
There is one with wifi issues. Can't remember which one.
Those are the ones I remember from the top of my head and I haven't flashed any of those in a while. I just read silently, waiting for the bug reports to lessen.
I've been using several versions of the latest official Sense 3.0 release for our phone (which you can find in this thread) since it came out. I haven't tested any ICS/JB rom for a while. However, I did flash Existz BR6 today, and for the way I use my phone - it works without any issues. I link my google contacts, do the facebook sync to show with my phone contacts, whatsapp and the xda app and wifi, that's it. I received a call, it sounded good. It's fast, responsive, haven't been able to check battery life - but it's bound to be good. I did run BR5Test2 for a week or two, and for me to keep a rom that long it has to be either bug less or with a minimum of bugs. And that is, working out of the box since I still haven't learned how to play around with a rom to fix this or that.
Hope this helps.
P.S. I had the same issues with my girlfriend, and other members with their women. They will never be happy.
Edit: existz mentioned a bug regarding the keyboard keys sticking/lagging every now and then. I haven't experienced it yet, but the easiest fix - paraphrasing existz, is to lock and unlock the screen.
Just read the first couple and last 10-20 pages to have an idea about a rom.
Most of the bugs mentioned may and probably be ironed out with the next release.

I've been running Existz ICS ROM pretty much since it's inception (the Inspire is a secondary device for me) and it's done nothing but get better. I want to try the new Sense 3.0 roms, and the ICS/Sense roms once they are more stable, but I just can't let go of stock ICS.
I've experienced the keyboard bug, and it's annoying, but everything you type does appear even if you experience the bug.
ICS does have a few issues, but I'd like to point out that I'm using blackout and I haven't encountered any bugs yet :good:
I forget if bluetooth (after disabling it would cause phone problems or something) was fixed or not, same with wifi hotspot (after turning on wifi hotspot you would have to reboot to use normal wifi), but I don't use either so I haven't noticed it
Aroma installer seems to be causing some issues, you'll have to mess around with some settings to get everything to work well. A bad flash will have no boot image, just a black screen. A good flash will get you Blackout's boot image.
But otherwise it feels very snappy and fast, everything runs well and I'd say that it's pretty much the same stability of most sense 3.5/GB ROMs. Actually, I think it's a little smoother than Energy.
Following that XxxPachaxxX's Nero XL(3.6) has the second least amount of bugs (although with a big gap between Blackout), and a bit farther away is Virtuous a3 (4.0A). There are two more ROMs out (last I checked) that are just completely incompatible for I4g, but from comments seems to be just as stable as Blackout :/
Although I think in a month's time Sense and ICS will be just as stable as Sense and GB.
I've been using Blackout ROM with ICS and Sense 3.6 and it runs really great. I will keep it until a stable ICS with Sense 4.0 comes out there. I've seen a couple of them, but I normally read they have issues with camera/hotspot/etc. I had a non-sense ICS ROM but I really missed sense.
don't give up on ICS, go IceCold

I tryed giving her AOSPX ICS from existz and she wanted sense and since it was an early release there were quite a few bugs and I was in trouble :crying: but thanks for the input again any other suggestions would be great really looking for stable ICS or JB with Sense 3.6 or 4.0 I read this on the portal http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1826903 so maybe soon I can give it to her once the devs get that kernal working for their roms

I can confirm that this works amazingly! Smooth, no graphical glitches, Video records at full resolution. It's awesome!
Meh...
I've tried the Blackout ROM, so far everything is fine except for the WiFi, it's been very flaky on my phone. It's constantly telling me that the wireless network in my home is out of range, when I'm 10 feet from the router. Rather annoying... but it works other than that.

Yes I've read good things about that ROM but alas it is AOSP without sense and not what we are looking for now if a port of Sense 3.6,4a,or 4.0 were put on there that would be what we need
I'm going to try later tonight, but wanted to ask just to avoid any obvious problems. When I flash Blackout will I need to flash any type of Inspire MOD like for existz's ICS AOSP build? Any other tips or tricks I should know about before I take the plunge?
Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure since she still won't let me flash on her phone waiting til ICS sense roms a lil more stable I would PM andrews317 since he has been using for a lil bit now
When you flash blackout the aroma installer already has the inspire mods in it so you don't have to worry about the mod pack

I wanted to thank the developers of MR3 in this thread. Liquid, Jester, etc.
I'm a long time lurker of this forum since I got my Thunderbolt. I'm VERY VERY appreciative of the developers for creating a very functional ICS rom for the Thunderbolt. Shame on HTC and Verizon for sandbagging so long with what should be a very simple upgrade for them. I was running Thundershed for awhile but grew tired of the Gingerbread look and feel of Android. My friends all mostly have newer phones with ICS, and I couldn't believe that it was supposed to be out in August and it's now mid-October and it's still not out.
To my surprise, I log on to here and see that an ICS ROM had been released.
My only issues with this ROM are random restarts and the white screen error in Facebook/Gmail/etc. I don't really use the video camera much in general; could you use an aftermarket app, or is it broken period?
Otherwise, I absolutely LOVE this and will never go back to Verizon's bloated software. Even when an OTA is released with ICS I won't go back. My phone is running much faster and much better than with Sense and Gingerbread. With data off I had a 10% decrease in battery in 7 hours; with data on and normal use I'll get maybe 5 hours out of a charge on this ROM. About normal for this phone and it's absolutely terrible battery life with the stock battery.
I have it overclocked to 1.5ghz running interactiveX as my governor. It runs beautifully, other than those two minor issues I pointed out above. I haven't experienced any data drops or anything out of the sort like that.

I second this thread.
A major thanks goes out to all of you who develop, in any way, for the Thunderbolt community. This even includes testers.
To answer your questions...
The video and front camera are broken even with an aftermarket app and will remain broken, most likely, until Verizon releases the OTA. From the OTA, our awesome developers will then be able to fix camera issues and many other issues that will make their ROM's 100% stable.
Also, if you get random reboots, you may want to flash to a different radio.
If you are currently running the OTA radios from the 2.11.605.19 software and still get these reboots, try flashing the combo radio and hopefully the reboots will vanish or, at least, happen less often.
If you go to your settings, about phone, software information, more, and look at the baseband version...
If the numbers you see are:
1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
Then you are on the OTA 2.11.605.19 radios, which is my recommendation for the radios to use with this ROM. If these are the radio numbers you see, try the combo radio. If the numbers you see under your phones baseband version is not:
1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
Then it may be:
1.48.00.0930w_3, 0.01.78.0916w_3
If it is:
1.48.00.0930w_3, 0.01.78.0916w_3
Try flashing the 2.11.605.19 OTA radios found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605557
If you have the 2.11.605.19 radios, though, try flashing the combo radio found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1864157
If you aren't sure how to flash a radio, here's a video tutorial for you to follow:

Definitely want to ditto this thread. Thanks for continuing to support the Thunderbolt. I was on the verge of retiring the Thunderbolt. ICS has brought new the Tbolt new life though!
thanks for the links. I'm going to try upgrading tonight and see if that helps. I notice you flash the radio in hboot. If I do a nandroid backup, does it also backup the radio (so I can restore it)? Or if I **** up, will it be permanently bricked?
Ditto to all that has been said. Thank You to all who made this happen, including HTC and Verizon. Their inaction drove me to decide to root and find alternatives. I've been incredibly pleased with MR3.
Thanks all!

If you backup that ROM after flashing the radio, it will back up the ROM. Hboot is a whole different thing than the recovery. That radio is downloaded to the phone and will automatically run on any ROM after its downloaded, even if you start from scratch. But flashing any of those two radios will not brick you on any ROM. Worst case being you won't have signal or data until you flash different radios again.
Say if you upgraded to the newer radios, and then you flash a ROM based on an older software version, you won't brick. In fact, you may not ever experience any issues. Maybe just signal changes or random signal drops.
But no, it won't brick you. It's almost impossible to brick a Thunderbolt.
I recommend after flashing the new radios, immediately go and either change the name from PG05IMG to something custom, move into a different folder that's off of the root of the SD card, or just delete it once flashed.
This is for in a such case where you need to get back into recovery from hboot, it won't prompt you to install the radio again. Because if you had to get into recovery from hboot, it wouldn't allow you to since it runs a check for the PG05IMG files first... and with that being said... I was always told to never flash the same radio twice without changing to a new one first.

i dont' see why these ROMs get so much acclaim... when i tried LiquidSmooth it wouldn't stay connected to the Internet. tried to toggle wifi and 3G/4G. nothing works and i have to reboot the phone every time i want to use the Internet.
Liquid MR3: the setup crashed and now the ROM won't even come all the way up...
unless my phone's broken or something (going to Verizon tomorrow to reflash and check it), i say they're both absolute garbage. i've had much better luck with ROMs on other phones.

well i reflashed Liquid this morning and it didn't crash this time, connected fine via wifi and setup completed properly.
all of my radio issues were on the old version (not sure if there's a difference in radios or whatnot), but if it acts up again i will try your recommendations. thanks a lot.

ah i see what happened now.
the first time i flashed it, i cleared /data after the flash before i brought the OS up, but you've included the launcher as a user app and not a system app. was this intentional? a user could easily screw up by uninstalling the launcher and have no way to interact with the OS. shouldn't there be a default launcher embedded in the system programs?
i'm an Android dev, but my understanding of system development is limited, but if i'm not mistaken, any Android ROM should come with a default launcher that is not uninstallable and has no icon as a backup launcher just in case.
He did install it that way so if the user wants to install their own launcher and remove the default. Its simple to make the new one a system app. All that has to be done is move the apk to /system and it is uninstallable.

I've recently told AT&T to FO. I went & bought a Straight Talk SIM, changed the necessary settings & all is working great. But now with AT&T's chains of servitude cut asunder I am looking for a bit of fun. Fun in the form of a new ROM for my Inspire. So, can anyone suggest a good ROM?
What I'm looking for in a ROM:
#1 Everything works!
Other than that I don't care if it's not the latest version of whatever or if it has or doesn't have some new function or what-have-you. I just want everything to work (I.E. camera, sound, etc..). Well, that & I want control of what apps are installed. Having dozens of useless bloatware apps makes me feel dirty inside. I mean really, a Blockbuster app... AYFKM?
It currently has 2.3.5 w/Sense 3.0 Software # 3.20.502.52 710RD (AT&T rolled out this version a few months ago.)
All suggestions are welcome.
If your rooted IceCold Sandwich 8.8 over at the DesireHD forum. ICS solid.

Android Revolution HD 6.3.3 is a solid rom with the same base you have now, just speed improvements and bloatware removed.
The one that works best once you try them out.

Kool, thanks guys for the suggestions. I'll probably try the base one first then the IceCold second. One question about rooting. My phone isn't unlocked. I got the code but when I installed the new SIM I wasn't prompted to unlock. Since the new SIM is AT&T compatible it just accepted the SIM. Am I going to need to unlock before I root? It's going to be a PITA for me to find someone with a non AT&T or ST SIM unless someone knows another way to get to the SIM Unlock screen prompt besides inserting an unaccepted SIM.
You mean your not rooted. When you use Ace Hack Kit to root your phone it should unlock it as well. But you don't need to be unlocked to run custom roms. You do need to be rooted for custom roms. And for gods sake read and read and really read the effen manual before you attempt anything and get yourself familiar with the steps involved. Good luck and enjoy the learning.

Thanks for the info. I've rooted & installed ROMs before on a few old T-Mobile G1 phones about 2 years ago. I got roughly a dozen of broken ones that I disassembled & repaired then played around a bit with different ROMs. But while I've done it before I just wasn't sure about the unlocking bit. I am curious though, does the "rooting = unlocked" apply to all Androids ? And you're definitely correct about the RTFM, there's no way I could have done it before without doing so. But the process for the Inspire, from what I've been reading, seems about half as difficult to do as what I went through before. Thanks again & I'll let you all know how it goes.
Not to sure if rooting/unlocking applies to all androids. I have rooted my inspire and my wife's infuse and its so weird that for my inspire its a little difficult to root but so easy to change the rom. But the Samsung are totally the opposite, so easy to root but pain in the rear to change roms. Still trying to get the ics on hers but end up in bootloops LOL.
