[Q] Phone gets hot and battery tanks - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hey guys,
Long time lurker, first time poster here
Forgive me if this is a duplicate post, I tried searching and couldn't find anything exactly what I'm talking about.
Most days, my HOXL is fine. I'm a pretty light user so sometimes I can get through two days without charging it. There's the odd time though (maybe a few times a month) that my phone will get really hot and the battery life just tanks. The phone gets extremely slow and it'll be dead in an hour or so if I don't reboot it. I've just gotten used to rebooting it as soon as I feel it getting really hot in my pocket. :silly: I haven't been able to track it down to anything in particular except that it seems to be wifi-related. Whenever it's in that state, I find my wifi is mysteriously disconnected and I'm not able to get it started. I tried turning off the 'best wifi performance' option in the settings but it hasn't made a difference.
I'm just running the stock Rogers ROM at the moment.
Anyone seen anything related to this?
Thanks.

Hi, welcome to the forums.
One thing I'd say is, turn off best WiFi performance as it doesn't help much with extra range but sure eats battery using it.
My phone got hot a couple times while it was unrooted, whether it was and most likely a app hanging up an keeping cp in high use or, a fringe area to your mobile signal where you're partially on lte and hspa.
You could try switching your phones lte off in mobile settings an test for a couple days an or use a task manager to close out apps when you're done with them.
Another route is, boot loader unlock it, flash a recovery like twrp and try clean ROM here in the forums, its close to stock, just it actually works pretty good.
I bet its a poor signal situation in your case though.

Mine was doing the same thing but daily. Rogers has a local repair shop here and when they opened it up he found the battery contacts were corroded and causing issues with the battery discharging. He cleaned up the contacts and coated them to prevent the corroding again and sealed the phone back up. I have not had a problem with the phone since and I get 2 to 3 days off a charge now. I'm not an heavy user.
This may or may not be your problem but it's maybe something to have checked.
The repair guy told me that even minor condensation from sitting in a pocket when we are sweating or going in and out of major temperature changes due to winter would be enough to do it with the contacts being uncoated.

That's interesting. It's the first time I've heard of something like that. Did you take it in to a Rogers store to get them to look at it? The people at the closest Rogers to me wouldn't even consider an exchange/repair unless they can see the problem. If they won't help, I can always try to take it apart. It seems pretty easy to access the battery.

Yeah I might go ahead and flash clean ROM and see if it makes any difference. Worst case I'll get some new features to play with
I forgot to mention that I've left my phone on HSPA and the best performance option has been off for at least a month.
I'm not convinced it's a signal issue though. The reception in my house is almost full and the problem is fairly intermittent. The phone itself crawls, barely registering touches. Wifi just turns off and gets stuck trying to turn it back on. It seems like something is stuck in a loop, just burning CPU cycles.
I might try getting a task manager and start killing processes once it happens again and see when the phone starts responding.

Sounds like a bad app the more detail you offer.
Corrosion damage and repairs are usually the result of individual usage rather then a broad general issue.
I don't see that being the issue myself.
No offence but just saying.

Maybe grab cpu notify from the market and it'll give you a visual representation of CPU in notification bar.
If you like, that is.
I use it.

I don't think it's corrosion either now reading the extra details.
If your not up to flashing a new rom just yet you could try better battery stats and see if something is running continuously.
If you do flash Clean Rom try not to re-install apps with data if you can help it.

Fair enough. I've attached screenshots I took last night when it happened. You'll notice wifi is off (I left it on) and both Wi-Fi and Android OS are taking the majority of the battery usage.
Thanks for the tip on CPU notify. I'll install it and monitor it the next time it happens.

Yeah I think you're right.
Are there cases where an app can be going rogue and not show up on that list?

You have wifi and lte on in them pictures.
Looks like maps might have been using a lot of juice.

There are lots of apps that can go rogue and suck up the battery.
Better battery stats will show you what apps are using your battery.

Out of curiousity are you rooted and is your bootloader unlocked? if not you would have to do that before flashing a new rom.
If not you may want to start with the 2 apps recommended to try and hunt down the problem just in the off chance you do have to return the phone for repair. I don't think you will get to that point but spending a few days recording what your phone is doing won't hurt.

Mine can get warm and eat battery when in a poor lte area, which I'm being this is a case of.

LTE actually shows "LTE" as an icon in my notification bar when it's on. It is odd that wifi says it's on when the notification bar shows 4g I can't connect to the internet when I'm in that state though I'm not sure if it's attempting to use wifi or data.
Thanks for the replies by the way, I really appreciate them.

Hmm, 4g is lte signal indicator as well.
In Canada, ours shows lte unless on a custom rom like asop ones.
You're stock right?

Very well could be. Rogers LTE coverage is pretty spotty. We don't have it in my area yet so I turn it off.
If I leave it on it doesn't make a difference on battery life though as it has nothing to connect to here.
From what I have read the battery draw happens when it connects and you either have constant disconnects or poor signal.
looking at your screenshots I wonder if maybe your having an issue with your wifi and mobile network fighting for connection.
Do you have both on all the time? If your in a low signal area for either one the other in theory should try and connect. Your phone may be spending a lot of time trying to connect to different networks.

I haven't unlocked my bootloader yet, but I'll get around to it soon. Makes it easier have a Rogers phone
You're right, I probably won't get an answer until I just do some monitoring. I did notice one time the battery usage screen said *wakelock* was taking up a decent amount of battery but I couldn't find out which app was holding it. Better Battery Stats will hopefully help out with that.

I'm running the stock Rogers ROM. It's looks like the attached photo when I'm on LTE. Staying on LTE really drains my battery fast because you can see the signal is weak.
Thanks again for the replies! :highfive:

I don't have LTE in my area but there are a lot of threads about LTE and low to no signal causing battery drains and other connection issues. I would almost suggest turning LTE off unless you need it and you know your in a good coverage area. You problems may disappear doing that.

Yeah I always leave mine off unless I have a need for the extra speed (which isn't that often) and always turn it back to HSPA when I'm done with it.

Hmm, odd to me.
Lte indicator is correct for stock on rogers, though I can't understand the 4G one...
I ran Rogers 1.94 ROM briefly on Rogers before using it on Telus and I can't remember seeing that.
After flashing and using asop based ROMs, its expected on yank ROMs
Now using clean ROM, it reports lte and hspa correctly and I only see 4g when on CM10, so why it's showing on yours stock baffles me a bit.

If you need a constant data connection maybe try your day with your wifi off unless you are actually using it. If you don't need the data connection on all the time try running with it off as well unless you need it. You will find you get a longer battery life that way as a side benefit.
I'm thinking that if you don't have both running constantly and connecting off and on you won't have the battery issues your having.

Josh, you're a fellow beaver eater right?
Ever see 4g on your stock ROM?

Erratic data

I'm temporary assigned to Cheyenne, WY and just got my Charge since my DroidX bit the dust. Can't wait to get back to Orlando which is covered in LTE but in the meantime I'm stuck on 3G.
My issue is that my data icon keeps going to 3G with a little D underneath it which means i have no data feed and when I do something that requires data, like the market, it doesn't always kick back in right away, which causes some apps not to work.
Has anybody else experienced this issue or am I just on a crappy tower? I did upgrade to ED2 in hopes that that would fix it.
Sent from my Droid Charge using Tapatalk
Same issue - different state
Mods sorry I double posted. Please take down my similar thread. Here is what I posted.
I have a Thunderbolt and really enjoy 95% of how it works - except of course the battery life. So in an effort to retain the function of the Thunderbolt and improve battery life I picked up a Droid Charge. The screen is FANTASTIC and it runs almost as fast as the Bolt.
Here comes the big BUT!! But the data connection falls off a lot and I have to do a reset to get the 3g data connection back. There are some of other smaller things but the big BUT makes the Charge unusable for me.
Anyone a quick fix to this issue?
I am surprised this issue hasn't been reported more widely.
Experience tells me that Sammy ROM fixes are sssllloooww to come along.
So unless there is something I am missing - back goes the Sammy.
Also another quick question - anyone get Skype to work?
Thanks
I am having a bunch of connection issues as well. It seems like the 3g connection is spotty and handing off from 4g to 3g is worse. To make matters worse, if I am transferring anything when the issue occurs the transfer is toast and the app needs to be killed before it behaves again.
As for Skype, the one in the marker works (the non VZ one) so far. Haven't tested voice, but VZ ver wouldn't even run.
I have had the same problem with my thunderbolt so I returned it and got the charge and haven't had as much of a data problem and the battery life is so much better than the bolt.
No data issues here. But there also isn't LTE offered in the area so I guess I wouldn't be experiencing 4g/3g swapping ever...
In fact, I'm actually experiencing much better connectivity (wifi, 3g, gps, voice) than I was on my Fascinate.
No 3G here either but still erratic
Just to clarify, 4g is not available in my primary area. My phone has a good solid lock on a good solid signal then BOOM no more data.
Given what some of the others have said - it sounds hardware related.
Probable best to just take it back.
Yup, shoddy 3G
I'm having issues with sporadic 3G connectivity as well. Previously, I owned a Droid Eris and never had any issues with 3G in my area leading me to believe it's a problem with the Charge. I don't live in a 4G area so there is no interference there. I'll be mid-app and boom, it drops for about 2 minutes or until I toggle the data switch off/on.
Glad I'm not the only one, but still very annoying.
Aside from my few hardware/design complaints of the Charge, THIS issue is by far the worst that directly affects the user experience.
Samsung, are you reading this thread? Please help us!
I'm having the same issue. I was about to call verizon to make sure there were no outages. Places I normally have no issue maintaining 3g coverage I'm dropping down to 1X.
i had the same problem, i went to verizon and they reactivated my phone and now my phone works great with no problems. go to verizon and tell them to reactivate your phone, they may also give u a new sim card too.
Went to Verizon
Yep - went to Verizon also. Left the Charge there. We'll see where it goes but for now too many negatives. As I said earlier, I really like the Sammy screens started with the Fascinate. I just don't feel like waiting around for the slow train that Sammy/Verizon always seem to be on for fixes. Hopefully I am wrong soon but for now I am right.

It's a network and/or modem firmware issue - the Thunderbolt is plagued with the EXACT same problems.

OT F.E. Warren? My Cousin was stationed there, he was a guard at the Minuteman III ICBM Silo's and Launch Facilities, are you on the base or at the Missile's? I hope the deployment goes well! OT
Back on Topic, I noticed that little D underneath the 3G today and thought "what the?" lol. It was only there for a few seconds, so I dismissed it, I'll keep a watch on it though and report back any data issues.
I'm on base thank Jebus, I work behind a desk in the Communications SQ. As for the D, I went into vzw and they say claim it's normal. Personally I think it has something to do with the bad infrastructure we have in Wyoming, causing major power drain issues on my phone.

My wife's droid charge is having very bad issues with the 3g dropping and never coming back. Were in el paso, TX.
Same issue here in Orlando. 4G to 3G drops data...very annoying....wife is ready to return for iPhone4. Help please! Don't want fruit in house.
Having the same problem in Alabama, don't have 3G yet and yet I get the D and then 1X and it completely drops out. Last night I lost data completely and wouldn't come back up even after I rebooted the phone. I wasn't sure if this was due to the battery being about < 5% (I was trying to kill it) or what. About to boot my phone back up and see how it does. I had just switched WiFi off in my apt. and never got the 3G data stream.
I have it set to CDMA only since there is no 4G in my area right now, don't know if that really helps or hurts the situation though.
I actually thought the D meant that something about the stream being dormant because I do get it a lot of times but when I refresh facebook or something, 3G immediately comes back up.

How is your data doing lately, any better?
It's not getting any better but I talked to tech support and they said it's a known issue. Guess there'll be an ED3 soon.

I hope so. I would really like to keep the Droid Charge.

EE4 radio didn't fix the lack of connectivity issue.

I find that if I'm in a fringe 4G area, that my phone will often not connect to either 4G or 3G. At home my 4G signal is strong and I always connect to 4G 100% of the time. At work, when i'm in the middle of the building I often get no 3G or 4g signal. From my office I always got 3G with my D1. With my Charge about half of the time i get no signal unless I reboot. It seems like the phone gets confused if there is a weak 4G and a decent 3G. How is the Charge in a 3G only area?
I saw the EE4 release notes and it looked like it was meant to solve this problem. However, I'm seeing the same behavior. What is everyone else's experience.?
I should also add I'm using Juice Defender. I think I"m going to try disabling it to make sure that isn't causing a problem.
I'm going to guess that it could be JuiceDefender causing the problem, disabling data until a more reliable signal comes about. I have had times where I've lost 3G service, or 4G service, but it comes back on its own after a few seconds. I'm guessing that despite the improvement, there are still some bugs, which is to be expected with the new technology. I do notice that I loose my data connection much less often than before, and the improvement in battery life is worth any minor issues for me.
Get rid of Juice Defender, it will cause you many more problems than its worth. All it really does is enable/disable data when it doesn't think you need it to save battery, but you're much better off doing that yourself with the power widgets in the notification bar. I spoke with a VZW network engineer after confusing the various tech support reps because I actually have some idea of how their network operates (go figure), and he confirmed that something like that is not a great idea, especially on the new LTE network. It doesn't save much battery, since its always forcing data to re-sync when it thinks it should even when I don't need it, and sometimes turns it off when I do want it. Also, it seems to take much longer for it to sync or switch 3g/4g when JuiceDefender is running.
I completely uninstalled it, and when I pull my phone out, if I plan on using the internet, I turn on mobile data. If I'm putting it away for awhile, using media/apps/games on the phone that don't require data for some time, or planning on making a long phone call, I'll turn it off. It syncs up right away when I need it, so that works very well for me. In fact, if you keep your apps from auto-synching, it will idle most of the time its not being used anyway, meaning its not using much power anyway.
Just like auto task killers, juice defender seems to be one of those things that's an attempt to save battery power and improve performance, but is typically misunderstood and used improperly, actually hurting the things you want to improve. It seems that proper understanding of how Android works, and learning how to efficiently manage it yourself works better.

You guys rock. I've uninstalled juice defender and have had zero issues for the last 3 hours. Still too soon to tell, but it looks promising.
I'm having issues with this the last few days. I've never had Juice Defender.
Especially tethering as the wife and I were driving around looking at houses. She likes to pull them up on the laptop while doing so. Before the EE4 update everything worked great, now it cut out enough to make it too aggravating to continue to use. And each time it cut out the phone had lost 4g and I had to toggle LTE in the network settings to get it to come back.
Anyone else had similar issues? I thought EE4 was supposed to fix these, not cause more!?
Well, my 4G has improved slightly since EE4.
I actually occasionally get 4 bars of 4G in my office at work, where I never had connection to 4G in the past. It still seems a little dicey with random hand-offs between 3G and 4G, though.

Yeah I'd agree with that, better 4G when I have it, but very bad handoffs.
Update, not a single outage since removing Juice defender.

Death Grip

I just called HTC and had them send me out a new battery door. I was having problems with the signals. Have any of you had these same problems? If so have Yall got a replacement from HTC and did it fix the issue?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
nope, haven't had any reception/signal issues at all.
I believe the death-grip affects your wi-fi signal. When I move my phone to landscape mode and hold it as indicated in some videos, momentarily a bar goes down in my wifi signal but nothing like an interuption. It doesn't drop (and reconnect) wifi either.
It seems to be a hit or a miss with these phones

This is why I'd really like it if someone who replaces their battery cover could post before and after wifi signal strength from the same location. It is possible that there has been a redesigned battery cover with a better antenna placement.
I only lost 1 signal bar so i think its normal - like other phones
I am currently having a HUGE problem with death grip. So bad that it drops my WiFi calling when im texting in landscape even from about 15 feet from my router. I am going to call HTC tomorrow and request a new back cover just because its a free step I can take to try and fix it.
seems like HTC have a problem with this model
i have to wait 7 days for my Sensation to come from service
then i will see what is the next step... media, solicitor .... we will see
signal its rubish anyway

ok... so after reading your post I decided to test it out. My router is on the 2nd floor in the study. I used landscape mode to send a couple of emails and texts from the first floor and outside my home. The signal dropped a couple of bars each time and recovered. Didn't drop the wifi signal for sure.
I think it is still a problem and HTC needs to get a fix out. Don't know if it will be a f/w or h/w but it needs to be out. I guess if everyone having this issue raises enough hell, HTC may act sooner.
The 4g phones seem to have a different placement of the wifi antenna and does not contain a death grip like problem due to this reposition.
You can higher the wifi signal (battery usage) in the wifi advanced settings.
Doesn´t help anyway?
All sensations will do this. Rooting the phone and installing custom ROM will fix the issue. Before if i placed my hand over the top of the phone, wifi would drop, sometimes even lose signal entirely. Now after root and ROM, it doesn't even drop one bit.
I was about to return my phone due to this issue, i am glad I waited a bit.

My phone is rooted (s-off) with all bloatware removed. Its still on stock ROM though.
Since we have S-OFF now, the custom ROM's for sensation have started to flow. Just waiting on those ROM's to be stable before deciding on which one to use.
BTW which ROM are you using!!!
Changing the back cover will make no difference. I got a replacement and saw no difference at all.
When I would go into landscape I would lose 1-2 wifi bars, but after I flashed Android Revolution 1.1.6 and kept the stock radio I started only losing 1 bar if any at all.

I haven't experienced this at all. compared to my buddies iphone 4 where there is a serious death grip problem any drop in signal on my sensation is moot.

This is why I'd really like it if someone who replaces their battery cover could post before and after wifi signal strength from the same location. It is possible that there has been a redesigned battery cover with a better antenna placement.

I've heard that it does, but I'm still waiting on mine to arrive. We have FAR FAR lower signal strength with this phone than with our other phones (motorola cliq / mytouch 4g's)
I just checked and I'm on zero bars right now. I usually have 4 bars right here with my other phone. It's rediculous. Holding the phone reduces my signal strength by ~40-50%. It can completely lose signal, right under a tower (in visual range) if you hold your hand flat against the back.

For many people, this is not the case. I know there are different revisions for the back cover. I think it is due to that.

Did your wifi situation improve after u got the new cover? my device sucks.. it drops all the way down to zero.. thinking of getting the g2x instead
Signal is good when phone is turned to 2G only, so this appears to be a firmw-/software issue rather than a battery-cover issue.
I had the same problem when i first recieved the devie but as you say custom rom sorted that

Is this same for everyone or just my phone?

Alright, so I had HTC EVO 4g for around 3-4 years and the lag and limited storage made me switch to s5. My evo was custom rom based on gingerbread. My experience so far with this phone is not going so well. "TouchWiz" constanly pops up saying that it was stopped or not responding or something, wasn't paying attention to what the message said. Android browser keeps crashing when I try to close a tab or go to a different tab. Mobile signal connection seems worse than my bro's s4. The compass direction is way off, I've tried many apps and tried calibrating, but it doesn't work. When I do try the compass, the readings are always shakey even though it was on flat surface. Whereas my old phine has a steady and rock solid compass reading. There's no built in sensor calibration or test app. Battery drain is insane. Is everyone experiencing this or is it just me? I'm getting so irritated. Only good point is the hardware, way more smoother and faster than my evo. Also when I click home button, there's like a 1 second delay before it actually goes to home, unlike my old phone where it just instantly responds.
You may have gotten a bad phone. Have u tried a factory reset? If you are on 4g LTE your signal bars show your data connection not your signal strength. Switcj over to cdma only so u only get 3g and your signal bars will show stronger. As far as battey life I get amazing battery life in my phone. I have yet to run my battery dead in a day. I have seen as high as 5 hours screen on time with 20% battery left.
If a factory reset doesn't work I'd take it back for a new phone.
Hope ya get it sorted out

Yeah, I know all about the signal bars and stuff. Only with my 4G, the signal bars show a lot stronger, when outside of course. When I'm outside and tried 3G, it gets like 0-1 and it's still cant connect me to google.com even though on SignalCheck the 3G signal is like 85%. At home I have to use my WiFi, otherwise I won't get a connection at all. I don't know if I can take it back for a new phone... It's rooted since day 1 and knox is tripped and it's been way past the return period. Would factory reset likely solve all the problem or is it just like a 1 in a million chance of it working?

There have been many reports of peeps getting devices with wonky stuff going on. I think Sprint or whoever is getting devices back and just throwing right back in the box without checking, or something along those lines. Definitely try doing a factory reset. If that doesn't work, take it into a Sprint store and make them fix or give ya another cause what it is doing is not normal for the S5. Battery life for me has been just as good or better than my S4. TW has been solid without any crashes.
Thread cleaned. Warranty fraud is illegal. If you came here and rooted your device, and something broke, pay the costs of the replacement. There are disclaimers all over this site explaining that using these items WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY AND ANYTHING YOU DO, YOU DO AT YOUR OWN RISK.

My apologies, there is a misunderstanding. I meant to file a claim through TEP and pay a deductible to get a new phone. Warranty would require me to send in my phone which I could not do if I reported it lost.
Edit: What are the actual chances that I got a bad phone?
Definitely a bad phone or just need to wipe data and wipe device. I have not seen any issues with this device other than the alarm clock icon disappearing

Intermittent connectivity issues

Every so often my M8 will basically become disconnected from the network. This NORMALLY appears when I'm in a low coverage zone, and it's as if my phone just doesn't want to reconnect when I get back into a higher coverage area.
For instance at my gym, I frequently get a weak signal, but it's usually 4G. Sometimes it'll drop to 3G, and then sometimes when I get back into an area of the gym that has 4G coverage my phone will say it's still on 3G. However, there's actually no connectivity at all, and I need to either reboot or toggle airplane mode to get a connection again.
Sometimes (at least 2-3 times in the last week) it happened while, at least to the best of my knowledge, I was in a 4G area (though with weak coverage) the entire time. Again I fixed it each time by toggling airplane.
Has anyone else seen an issue like this? It's frustrating as hell. And more importantly has anyone heard of a fix for this?

Yep, actually I had a thread about this a while back; I tried just about everything (other ROMs, new sim cards, factory resets, the whole shebang) and my only solution so far (if you intend on keeping your current phone) is to completely unroot my phone, along with removing all root-related applications (namely Xposed). It still happens from time to time, but a lot less frequently then when rooted and running Xposed modules. I have a new phone coming in today from Verizon, so hopefully that unit will not have any of these issues... I still am not entirely sure what causes it, though it is definitely exacerbated by Xposed. Hopefully some of this helps? If you have any further questions feel free to ask, either through PM or this here thread.

I have a new phone now, and so far I haven't experienced any data connectivity issues. This morning I did notice that my SMS were not sending properly, but that issue has since faded away, so hopefully it was Verizon network based... Anyways, I will try reinstalling Xposed and a couple modules later today (likely Snapshare and the Sense 6 Toolbox) and will report back sometime tomorrow or the next on how it goes. Fingers crossed...

Lol, so after installing Xposed, I suddenly started having issues maintaining a solid 4G connection; 3G works fine, just whenever I do manage to connect to 4G I am unable to use any data (says I am connected to the mobile network, but I do not get any upload or download data movement). Even after removing Xposed and all associated modules, I am still experiencing this problems. I am going in today/Monday to get a new SIM card (hopefully this is what is causing my issues) but goddamn I just cannot seem to catch a break in terms of my phones' data connection. If the above doesn't work I may have to send for another phone, though after having now received three replacements this entire process is getting a little irksome... I really do love this phone, but it seems as if it is my M8 is rejecting my love from every angle.
UPDATE: The new SIM didn't do anything, I still am having 4G issues, so another phone it is...

a lot of feedback on the web across multiple carriers of the poor lte signal retention on this phone.....this is starting to sound like a hardware defect or a major "radio" software glitch.

I dumped mine could not handle it anymore get rid of it before you loose any more money. I have had a lot of phones when there bad from the start they don't usually get any better. The Droid Bionic being the only exception.

I had the same problem with my new M8 when travelling from/to areas with low or no data coverage back to areas where I knew there was a LTE signal. Only toggling Airplane Mode would make the data reconnect. That problem was solved for me with a new sim card.
I also had very bad data connectivity at home in a major southern California city (best was -105 dBm) whereas I got up to -83 dBm in some rural town in Arizona.
Read trook's posts #34 and up here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53838257
Some of these problems may be connected to the new data service VZW is rolling out.
I would wait a few weeks before ditiching this phone. 'Cause it rocks!!!

it has nothing to do with the AWS rollout - i have a Verizon Galaxy S5 sitting right next to my M8 ---- guess what - consistent data speeds on the s5 (15 mbs down)......on the m8 (3-4mbs down) - and the data flucutates and in the signal meter , I'm getting about -6db less on the M8 than the s5.
trust me, i so desperately want to keep this phone, b/c quite frankly, i hate the amoled screen on the s5, but alas, i cant keep a phone that doesn't work well

yes - sorry bro - i'm quite disappointed by what i am seeing with my own two eyes as well as all the others across the US and the rest of the world who are experiencing the SAME symptoms. so this is not a verizon network issue --
me thinks its a faulty radio which is causing bad handoffs between 3g and 4g (LTE). once the phone drops down to 3g, it never regains 4g signal for some reason. also, there is the issue of the constant signal fluctuations even when the phone is on LTE...so who knows. maybe combo of bad radio and poor quality antenna module.
i'm not a phone engineer but i have enough common sense and knowledge about phones to know a lemon when i see one......so, yup, i'm keeping the s5 and return the m8 tomorrow under the 14 day guarantee from verizon. shame....

To tell the truth I have been reading about the same issue on the general M8 forum - probably just didn't want to make the connection.... So thanks for opening my eyes.
I'm hoping for bad radio software that may get fixed with some future update (although my 6th sense tells me it's the bad antenna module....)
Too late for me for a clean exchange. Gonna have to read the Squaretrade fine print.....
