cyanogen mod backgrounds not as crisp? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I installed cyanogen about 2 weeks ago. So much smoother than stock 4.0, love it! I get a lot more program crashes than before, but it's worth it. A few questions though,
A per title, my picspeed wallpapers aren't as nice as they were before. They were much crisper, not zoomed in. I switched to the cyanogen background and it looks great. Why is this? Am I doing something wrong?
Just as an aside, is there a way to get s-note back? I miss it...
Finally, when jelly bean is finally officially released, will I need to revert back to stock 4.0 to get the update?
Thanks!

Do themes slow down your kindle?

Hey everyone. I recently flashed the Jandycane ROM for my KF, and everything is running smoothly.
However, prior to JB, I had GB with GoLauncher theme installed. My KF was rather laggy. I noticed my phone with GoLauncher was/is laggy also. Do you guys notice the same thing on your devices?
Note: I also tried ADW launcher on both my devices and the lag was still there, so I do not feel like GoLauncher was my problem.
With that being said, what is your favorite JB launcher/theme at the moment?

Jellybean is just smoother than GB. And I currently use apex launcher.
Apex.
The standard one. I like how it doesn't switch to landscape mode and mess up my icons and widgets.

nice car btw
Guess I'll go check out Apex right now. As for slowing down the device, does this happen to anyone else here?

I noticed a little lagginess with the themed rom also.
But, it's negligible in JB because of project butter: the baseline is so freaking smooth that even a little lag added to that is hard to notice.
But to me, the whole reason I switched back was I realized Jellybean was already themed.
By Google.
It's called the "Jellybean" theme, and the time and effort they put in to making it shows, imho.
It's got a terrific, clean, look to it;
the other rom made me think of that hot chick who thinks she's making herself hotter by wearing a ton of extra makeup.
She isn't.
She's covering up what was pretty hot to begin with.
Just my .02, and who knows..?.

haha got ya on that one. I'm likely to stick with the stock Jandycane JB ROM. It's pretty customizable and has a clean look already.
My phone however (Droid Charge), probably might have to go back having no theme. It doesn't have the luxury of JB, so it's kinda slow in comparison.

That's what I use: Jandycane.
It's not themed at all; just stock Jellybean, as far as I can tell.
Stock Jellybean = Awesome the way it is, in my book.

Anyone else underwhelmed by the Jellybean OTA?

I've been underwhelmed by Jellybean as of late. I really don't see all of the "butter". If anything, it seems more laggy when I'm typing and I get a notification. It's self-evident Tegra 2 isn't near as powerful as Tegra 3, but I was hoping maybe Jellybean would be a huge improvement. It really seems exactly the same as ICS. We even still got stuck with the ICS wallpapers and ICS boot animation (which the boot animation makes sense since we're not an "official" nexus device, but it would've been nice regardless). Google Now is fun at first, but really I don't see why everyone was flipping out over it. The improved keyboard is still not as good as SwiftKey. The new launcher features I actually find annoying; when placing an icon, I don't want all of my others to get messed up. The bouncing temporary layout thing seems much too sensitive when I'm trying to just create a simple folder. The new browser is definitely faster thanks to V8, but the new quick controls are aggravating and I preferred the old ones where closing tabs and making new ones weren't as hidden. If anything, the new quick controls slow me down more. Chrome on Jellybean is the exact same as Chrome on ICS so I'm still using that over Browser. Am I missing any features added, or is this it? Anyone else notice any major changes except for a quicker recent apps menu?
Yeah, pretty much.
To me it looks like project butter is imitating what apple has been doing for years.
The animation is cached so it can launch quickly, giving the app time to do it's thing. It's an optical illusion.
I mean, on face value, it SEEMS to be smoother. But if you look closely you can see the lag behind the animations.

We are an official GED device, that's how we got JB.

[Q] Ready to take the plunge and start flashing

Rooted, unlocked, and backed up my imei and ready to flash. I'm backing up all my apps using Titanium Backup. What system apps do I back up if I want to restore call history, contacts, and text messages? Can these easily be restored after flashing the cm10 daily rom? Also, is it okay to backup systemui.apk using TiBackup? I have a custom one that was offered in the dev section.
And just another dumb question, but data on sdcard and ext_sdcard won't get wiped?
You don't really want to restore system app because they change from rom to rom. So that includes your system ui. I personally use sms backup from pay sure for texts and call history, it seems to not do pictures messages so save any pics you want. Finally your contacts i hope are saved to your Google account....if not use backup assistant or export to sd card.

So I flashed CM10. I really really don't get the big deal haha. I guess I'll play around with Google Now.
The only things I kind of miss so far is S-memo that I actually did use a lot. Anyone have suggestions for a good handwritten-note alternative?
Also missing a lot of widgets from the pull down notifications.
It does seem speedier and I'll see how my battery goes.
This was my first time doing this so it took me like almost an hour to restore everything from Titanium Backup. I like how my Apex Launcher goes back to almost exactly as it was, except the widgets have to be readded.
But overall if I'm not seeing a big difference as a daily driver, I might just go back to stock rooted as I was pretty happy with that anyways.

I don't remember exactly where it is, but look around in the settings. I know there is somewhere where you can customize the "Power Widgets" as I believe they are called. Add/remove, reorder, I actually like it a lot better than touchwiz's quick buttons.
Although I don't blame you if you go back. As much as I loved CM10, (I know I will get my head ripped off for saying this but...) I actually kinda missed Touchwiz's apps. I hated the new contacts app, and I missed the camera, calculator, calendar, and dialer. But if you do go back, might I suggest trying a custom TW based rom. I'm running synergy and I love it!
CM is all about clean look, speed, no crap, straight android. The theme engine allows for some pretty awesome customizations using downloaded themes from the play store.
If it's not flashy enough for you, you want to stick with a touchwiz based rom-stock, cleanrom, synergy, jellywiz (jb), etc.
But before you do that, throw a theme like dustinb's cobalt line of themes. These make cyanogen rom's very tempting. I personally am just waiting for that stable release cm10 release.

For me at least, my choice to stick with TW wasn't about the theme, it was about features. I absolutely can't stand the layout of the contacts app, that's the big thing stopping me from switching. The dialer in CM10 doesn't let you spell out contact names like the TW one. Admittedly I like the theme of the calculator and calendar on TW better, but it's nothing that would stop me from enjoying wonderful AOSP.
CM10 - a quick review
I agree with noingwhat here... I missed a lot of the apps in TouchWiz in a mere three hours straight of playing with CM10.
I seriously find the camera to be embarrassingly bad, at least in terms of look & feel compared to the tw camera.
The same goes for the calculator. I'm sure it does what it needs to, but it just doesn't look very polished. These are two apps that I use on a really frequent basis. Are these what the stock apps look like on a Nexus?
I also was not a fan of the Contacts app, and for whatever reason, couldn't find a way to explicitly link each contact to their Facebook profile.
One other small nitpick, I think the slide to unlock in TW was done very well. You simply swipe in any direction. Having to swipe in a specific direction on a 4.8 inch screen is just asking for your phone to fall out of your hand. Also, I can't see the clock on the lockscreen due to my wallpaper being a lighter color. I refuse to change my kate upton wallpaper lol.
I liked how the text message threads looked in JB over tw. TW looks plain silly sometimes.
My APW widgets look a lot better in JB than in TW, especially when using the ICS skin for apw.
I really loved the transition animations in CM10 overall. I also liked the little animation you get when the screen turns off. Very very cool.
Anyway, since I was using Apex launcher already, it had the same look and feel on CM10 as I did on stock-rooted (although I admit CM10 was a bit zippier). I really think I just missed the apps too much but I did enjoy the modern, clean, and sleek look and feel in straight JB.
But!! On the plus side, I was able to get to recovery, perform backups, restore my apps and text messages, all on my first try without bricking my phone. I was able to return to my Nandroid without any problems either.
I appreciate all the work done by the CM team but I'm hoping it comes along a bit further in the near future. All my opinions are obviously subjective, so I hope it's all taken with a grain of salt. I'm a long-time lurker here so I'm just glad to see that someone new can eventually get the hang of all this.
I have to say after playing around with CM10 for about week I have to agree.
There was a time when AOSPs like CyanogenMod was far better than any of the Manufacturer Skinned android variants. HTC Sense on my OG Droid Incredible was considered by many to be the best OEM skinned Android variant and CM6 left it in the dust. It was more stable, faster and had more features.
However, TouchWiz is pretty damn good. The Samsung apps are strong(with the exception of S-Voice). Its pretty fast(once you turn off S-Voice). Its still needs a little project butter and Google Now but other than that imo its pretty solid.
Now of course there are specialty thing like overclocking or drastic UI changes that require custom roms but 90% of users have no desire to do any of that stuff.
I still love AOSP roms and I'll probably keep tinkering with them, but staying with TouchWiz isn't the worst decision in the world.

I forgot about the messenger too. I actually prefer the messenger in TW over JB, but as far as the settings and overall UI, I prefer JB. If only I could get the apps, that's all I want.

[Q] upgraded to 4.1.2 no more panoramic backgrounds

hey guys.
I just updated to Jelly bean this morning when it prompted me to (yaay). but it seems i can have panoramic backgrounds anymore. Its not a big deal but it looked better than just a regular background. i read through some forums and found something suggesting i try wallpaper wizardrii but it doesnt work either.
my phone is a bone stock galaxy S2 LTE (canadian rogers version of skyrocket) upgraded to 4.1.2.
u mean live wallpaper? where it moves? lol I haven't heard of any such issues but the update is very new yet

Nope before update there was an option to strecth the picture across all screens showing a different piece in each which worked alot better for widescreen images. Now it just lets me crop an image and it comes out all blurry. Sad panda
easy solution? change your launcher, that'll fix it. For a more stock one I recommend holo launcher, or nova. Apex if u REALLY like options

Crappy marshmallow emoji's

Is there a way to change it?
They look like gelatin puddles.
No way flan, just gotta be jelly of lollipop.

I am glad they updated them, although they are not the full set of Unicode 8 emoji s. I had a mod that had more of them. But I am satisfied.
show a screen shot of these so called jelly like emo's
If you don't like them you can always look at my mod here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...-apps/mod-6-0-1-ios9-style-emojis-mm-t3306418
Just what I needed, thanks.
I am having the same problem. I have a Note 5 through Verizon that I just updated to Marshmallow, and the emojis are hideous. They look like they just went back in time and brought us emojis from several years ago. They are horrible and I want my old ones back! These are like 2 dimension, barely detailed gum drop looking things!
