I was wondering if anyone has come up with a hack to tether android phones for free. Or maybe hacked androids mobile wifi app to be free
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
This has been around sense the beginning of Android.
Thanks, i hope it works for my inspire
When I saw the header for this I was hoping it would help me tether my next book via wifi to my cell phone ( a HTC TOUCH PRO 2) . Not this though, does anybody know what hack I can use to get my nextbook to recognize the wifi router from my cell phone?
I would use it if i could figure out how to root my phone

What am I missing?
I have a new Inspire / ATT (I am new to Android; previous was Tilt2 with WM6.5, heavily modified). Wifi hot spot came built in and I have used it to connect my notebook to the internet.
What I thought this was about was an Android equivalent to WMWIFI, which allowed one to do the hot spot thing but ATT could not detect the phone was tethered, I looked for that because I was grandfathered with ATT and would be able to have unlimited data for $30 a month. But I could not find this function for Android, so had to go with a tethered plan for $45 (all data inclusive) and limited to 4GB a month. If I could do the equivalent of tether without a tethered account, then I could stream video, etc, unlimited.
But this app looks to me to just be an implementation of the stock tethering. Or am I misunderstanding it?

Your misunderstood. This app is undetectable by carriers, in my case sprint, and allows tethering without paying per month for it. All you need is a data package and rooted.

I'm within my 30 days. I wonder if I can drop the extra $15 for tethering, and also go back to my grandfathered unlimited data. Thanks for the explanation.
Now I need to figure out the rooting process. My Tilt2 was heavily modified (using ROMs and phones by others), but the process was the same for all. Now it appears that every phone seems to have a different root process and I can't find it for the Inspire.
Another Question Though
Would this also allow me to download video, streaming it to the phone, without ATT knowing it, or is it just for hot spotting?

Streaming it to the phone? What do you mean? The WiFi tether does exactly what it says: WiFi tethering. So yea you can download videos and netflix with your computer.
I don't have an inspire but I believe if your connected via your WiFi router you can stream videos from your computer to your phone. I've never tried though.

The nexus s comes preloaded with tethering, this isnt limited by your carrier as the nexus s has no restrictions on this per agreement with tmobile or as an unlocked edition thru best buy, wife has a nexus s and no tethering package added on and it works fine, open up your setting and select wireless & networks then scroll down to tethering and portable hotspots
My laptop has had this issue before i got an android phone. I had wm phone. Im still trying to find out why.

IDK about a hack for recognition but I do use EasyTetherPro.apk on unrooted device and I have more than tripped my tether usage allotment ....Still going. It's got a setup for tablets too, though I've never tested anything besides USB tethering and the app is legit there ..so.....Maybe give that a try...Its 10$ ($9.99) but to bypass my 8gb limit =priceless
HTC Touch Pro 2 is Windows Mobile... and that post is 6 years old.
Recieved a text from my wireless carrier stating that my tethering would be cut off or I can pay an additional $30 or so per month. I think it came down to me downloading the OS for an iphone 3gs I've been playing with. Last month I ended up with around 10gb of data usage.
Tried tethering after the deadline date and was directed to a site, stating I need to call customer service. I also tried using data on my phone at this point and was directed to the same site. Call customer service and was told to access their data I would need to give them my phones serial number. go figure.... after the past two years of playing with various phones, nexus one, vibrant, hd2, iphone 4, iphone 3gs, nexus s.... they want to know what Im using .....
Solution????
a different android phone again, with tethering.
or
drop my sim card into my iphone 3gs for a few hours and switch back to the mytouch 4g

Seeing as how you are getting the same site from the phone browser and the computer browser, it seems they just assume, not know you are tethering. The hold should go off after your billing month is up. If not, well do they know you have a smart phone, or are you using it on a feature phone plan? If it is the later, then giving them a smart phone serial will probably make them change your plan to a smart phone plan.
I heard if you use the stock tethering app they charge you... what if you use the one that's built into CM 7? isn't that the same as using android-wifi-teather? I was always unclear about that
Well I have been using mytouch 4g and were using the original tether option and now I'm using cm7.never have had any problems.

Well for lite usage you won't have problem. But if you are using bandwidth excessively they will notice it and based on using DPI/SPI techniques they can determine which service and protocol is being used. They would never want people to use free bandwidth when they can get people to pay money for same exact thing. Talk about milking the cow for all its worth lol.
Before the mytouch I had a hd7 and before that the first 4g I had was the g2..download were massive and big..never got caught...I was always using the stock T-Mobile tether option..I guess cus I'm on an old unlimited android web plan...

Yes I did milk it, downloading the os for the iphone probably did it, will wait till cycle is over and do basic tethering again. Im going to my iphone and switch back to see if that works as well.

Yes I do use the tethering hotpsot often for internet at home. I downloaded the app you recommend, will test it out for awhile to see if itll make a difference and still allow me to tether.
I'm having conflicting information put my way about tethering. Is T-Mobile charging for using the WiFi Tether feature in froyo, or are they charging for the Wired Tether feature.
I can't even get a straight answer from store reps or customer service. It's like they don't even know themselves.
Trying to basically find out if I need to go back to using barnacle.

I'm not with tmobile, I have been using android phones for over a year plus, starting with the nexus one. I have always been tethering and kept my data around 5-6gbs per month. Last month I hit the 11 or 12gb mark, and within the first week of the new month I was already up to 3.5gbs. Mainly from downloading the Iphone OS, and other tools I needed.
Over the past year, I never once was charged for tethering nor was I warned about it. You shouldn't need to worry about tethering with tmobile, if you hit the 5gb of data they will cut your speeds. I download the tethering app from the first page of this post, and it seems to be working fine as of now.

I'm using the latest cm7 nightly and whenever I tether either over wifi or through USB on my x64 windows 7 machine, the internet dies after a couple minutes. Is anyone else having this issue?
I thought it might be an issue with the nightly build so I switched back to the stock rom and the internet tethering behaved exactly the same way. I also tried tethering to my laptop which is 32-bit windows 7. Because it didn't work on my laptop either, I think its either a hardware issue with my phone or T-Mobile is blocking the tether now.
I've also noticed that voip calling with the gingerbread sip client only works on wifi. I suspect that T-Mobile is starting to enforce some of their policies finally :/

T-mobile terms of service prohibits you to tether. Most people don't realize it but they can mess wit ur connection as they please if they find u using ur device in way that conflict with every user receiving equal service. Do u tether a lot and if u do way kind of activities do u do

T-Mobile does say it's against their TOS.
Bottom line is my data is mine. regardless of what device i use it on.
Now i will say that i only tether to other Android devices (IE Tablets), but still....
Capped?
Sounds like you're being capped :/ T-mobile will cap your data if you're using too much of it.. I've heard this many times.. they cap after 5gb of data, or maybe its 10gb? I'm not really sure but that sounds like what's happening to you. Usually it will disconnect or kick you to EDGE to slow you down.. Sucksss

Not really. It may be that he hitting his cap but my friend just got tmobile and he can't tether either. I tried it out and it didn't work. I could connect but the internet wouldn't work and I know for a fact he didn't hit his cap. I just tried it and my tether works and I dont officially pay for it. I'm running royal panache. Hopefully they won't start enforcing this...

I know I'm not at my cap... I only used about 2/5 gb so far. And the 4g will work on my phone even after my tethering stops working.
I noticed that while tethering that Google Chrome says "resolving proxy" in the status bar. The connection works really well within the first minute of tethering and then gets slower and slower until it dies completely.
I have x86 and x64 windows 7 machines that both show the same symptoms when tethering. But when I boot into my x64 Ubuntu desktop the tether works indefinitely. I suppose that T-Mobile detects how windows handles its network and somehow disables the tether through proxys.

I can still tether too, but I don't use it to often though, only when I need to get something important while i'm out. But I've been tethering since I had my G1 and when I had my g1 i would tether my ps3 to to lighten the load on my wifi router. I dont do that anymore but I still like tether since I do pay around 30bux for 5GB unl, I want to make use of what i pay for. But i end up using around 2GBs per month anyway.
I don't tether much at all. I only have been browsing the internet with the tether because my cable DSL has been out for a week. But that's another story

I have had to tether a few times with my laptop and had no issues, I don't do it often either though but I've yet to recieve a notice stating other wise. I would think that since they provide network service by means of usb network cards it would depend on the amount of data used in a yearly quater which would force anyone to upgrade their service for obvious reasons. My brother travels on business alot and he had to switch service for the same reason, not because he was doing anything wrong but because there was a better service provided for that specific use. If your on a laptop all day get a network card other wise tethwring should be for simple tasks ans periodic use only.
Sorry, Newbie to tethering, So when you hit the 5gb cap tmobile will shut off/throttle the data services?
Does that apply even if i have the Old school Even More plan with unlimited data? I could understand how new or plan changes where the option for fully unlimited is not available but not so much for old school plans.
I also realize post merger I may be out of luck but one can hope.
It's still unlimited, the new plan starts throttling at 2GB instead of 5GB. You still have data, just at edge speeds.

He's right, if your using more than that you should be on another plan, 5gbs is alot for a phone no matter how you cut it, personally I can blow threw 5 in a day easily depending on what I'm up to obviously but anything over that should be on a USB wireless network card.
Example:
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/?shape=lcards
ive been capped a few times and got a text message from t-mobile saying if i tethered any more that i would be charged. they have a monthly fee for tethering and hot spotting. its something insane like 25 bux a month. thats only happened once though and ive tethered and h spotted since with no problems. its accumulative i assume and you have to switch back and forth from each style of web connecting. try it and see if it helps at all.
I couldnt get my phone to tether last night and i saw a few people mention in other custom rom forums that it wasnt working... I was just wondering if anybody else could try if your on custom rom to see if its on my end or if at&t is cracking down? im on apex9.0 and talon 4.4.13 my tethering has always worked before???

Well.. I was ready to post and just tell you 'no its still working' cus i used it just last night. But I just tried using my capt to connect via wifi and although it connects like normal and says internet, when you try and reach the outside world it gives you a "invalid IP" thing on the windows 7 troubleshooter program. Tried tethering and got the same thing, even though it says connected..
Decided to see if it was just my android, so pulled out my windows mobile 6.5 phone that can tether and fired it up... connects just fine, im posting from it now. So i guess maybe they just figured out a way to break however android does it? Bummer.. anyone else able to give it a try?
I use cognition rom fyi.. has always worked before. I'll try again here in a bit...
Works for me
Don't know what the difference is but I just tried tethering on mine still using the older Precetion Beta 2 rom and it seems to work without any problems.
Oops spoke too soon... rebooted computer and phone and now it works.. shoulda fiddled with it more i guess.
Tried via wifi and tethering, on tethering now. Both worked.. so confirmed working on android and WM.. so no they havent been able to break it yet.. muahahaha!
You had me all upset though that I'd have to switch my damn sim card over to another phone to tether each time
Seeing this thread scared me... I dont use it that often but I am paranoid AT&T will find a way to stop us one day and I wont realize it only to find out when I need it most.
Ill have to try again when i get off of work, but i couldnt get it to work fof the life of me!

I don't see what the big deal is, if you have a data plan and available bytes to use not sure why ATT restricts wifi tethering. I downloaded a Mandriva linux cd iso onto my phone the other day, some 680 megabytes. I can pretty much do on my android what I do on my computer. If you have the data to use on your plan, not sure why ATT cares how you use it.
Just more innovative ways to screw the customer.
And my wifi tether works fine too, must be the solar flares.
It's more directed towards people with unlimited data plans and use large amounts of data instead of using a home internet connection.
They say these users big down the network for others that use the service normally. For those of us on tiered data plans it shouldn't matter.
I'm not saying I agree with them, just trying to explain it.

It matters to them even for tiered plans because people who tether use more data (that they are paying for). This prevents them from overselling their network. Like an airplane or a fitness gym, they want to sell you the service and get your money. They don't actually want you to use it to your fullest or they will be overwhelmed.
Still works for me, it's a damn shame they don't have unlimited data anymore.

That is not true. I work for At&t from what i've read in our LSO classes we take everday, is that At&t will be able to see the MAC id of the device you are tethering with. So when they cross check the MAC id with your device, because your device's "MAC" will always identify itself when it talks which is everytime it has to communicate with a tower.
So if they catch you now after Aug 11, regardless of data usage they will automatically remove you from your unlimited data to the tiered data/ tethering plan. So don't think you have to be a big user to be affected. I know it's easier for them to track iphones but i'm not so sure about Android. This is why i'm posting!
SO my question is how do we spoof the MAC id? I use Cm7 anyone?

ok, please excuse the newbness of my question. i am going to be switching over from an iphone to a skyrocket. i am concerned i will not be able to "tether" my ipad or dell streak 7 to the skyrocket. i did a search because i was told i needed an "adhoc" network to be able to use my ipad and streak. when i searched i found nothing regarding this. can some one explain how/can this be done? again sorry about the question, i'm just trying to make sure i can do this before i switch.
You can root and tether no problem or you can Pay att for tethering. Either way you shouldn't have a problem. Do you plan on rooting?

It works great for me. I rarely ever tether but i have connected my transformer a few times when on the go.

Ad hoc is not necessary for tethering as the phone acts as an infrastructure hot spot, same as any Linksys or netgear etc. router. It works perfectly as is with a tablet or any wifi equipped device.

You won't need anything for your ipad. I use tethering pretty frequently. When you root, download RomManager and remove the ATT tether block and your good to go. Parents Ipad 2 and Galaxy Tab have no problem connecting to my Skyrocket.
