ok, please excuse the newbness of my question. i am going to be switching over from an iphone to a skyrocket. i am concerned i will not be able to "tether" my ipad or dell streak 7 to the skyrocket. i did a search because i was told i needed an "adhoc" network to be able to use my ipad and streak. when i searched i found nothing regarding this. can some one explain how/can this be done? again sorry about the question, i'm just trying to make sure i can do this before i switch.
You can root and tether no problem or you can Pay att for tethering. Either way you shouldn't have a problem. Do you plan on rooting?

yes i do plan on rooting. i posted the question because i heard using an ipad, i'd need an adhoc not just tethering?? when i rooted my streak i could not connect to my iphone till i changed some file. forgot already
It works great for me. I rarely ever tether but i have connected my transformer a few times when on the go.

Ad hoc is not necessary for tethering as the phone acts as an infrastructure hot spot, same as any Linksys or netgear etc. router. It works perfectly as is with a tablet or any wifi equipped device.

You won't need anything for your ipad. I use tethering pretty frequently. When you root, download RomManager and remove the ATT tether block and your good to go. Parents Ipad 2 and Galaxy Tab have no problem connecting to my Skyrocket.
thanks guys. i should be getting the skyrocket early next week. unless i decide to wait for the "note", choices choices

Hoping someone can help with tethering a cell phone with the g tablet. I specifically have a blackberry storm 2 from Verizon with all the necessary rights to tether. The problem is the the OS I am using (Vegan) makes the tablet believe it is a phone rather then a computer so it obviously causes issues with connecting to a phone by Bluetooth. Any assistance would be great.

Storm 2 tether
Anyone ever figure out if tether between storm2 and gtab? Running vegan b 5.1
I have an android phone and it tethers fine. Do you see the black berry show up in your network??
I think there is an app called tether for the blackberry that lets you do bluetooth tether.
barackisbrown... Wifi tether or usb tether?

I use wifi tether..Not sure if the gtablet can do usb tethering??
It's been asked in several different threads, there is no solution currently to tether blackberry with the gtab. There is no bluetooth dun client available to do this yet unfortunately.
I just got my G tab about a week ago and and wondering the same thing. I have a iPhone that I have jailbroken so bluetooth would be the most convenient way to tether but if anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful.
Besides the difference between Bluetooh and wife, what is the difference between those two types of tethering???

I don't know what the speed differences would be between the two methods but I've been using Wireless Tether on my rooted Droid X for almost two months. It turns my phone into a 3G wifi hotspot that allows up to 5 devices to connect to. Since I have an unlimited data plan with Verizon this seemed like a no-brainer to me rather than paying them an additional $30/month for a lousy 2GB to use the Verizon hotspot app the phone came with.
This has worked with no headaches and since I always have my phone with me it is convenient.

So I installed the Nero ROM on my Vibrant and it states that I can tether, but anyone know of a way to tether it to my G-Tab? I found apps like PDA-Net, which will install just fine on my phone, but will it have issues if installed on my tablet? Pre-Thanks for the help. You guys rock ! ! !
I'm running tnt lite 4.2.1 and I'm tethering it to the gtab. The Tnt lite rom recognizes ad hoc tethering which is required using Wireless Tether on my Droid X to the gtab. I don't run VEGAn so I can't help you there.

I was wondering if anyone has come up with a hack to tether android phones for free. Or maybe hacked androids mobile wifi app to be free
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
This has been around sense the beginning of Android.
Thanks, i hope it works for my inspire
When I saw the header for this I was hoping it would help me tether my next book via wifi to my cell phone ( a HTC TOUCH PRO 2) . Not this though, does anybody know what hack I can use to get my nextbook to recognize the wifi router from my cell phone?
I would use it if i could figure out how to root my phone

What am I missing?
I have a new Inspire / ATT (I am new to Android; previous was Tilt2 with WM6.5, heavily modified). Wifi hot spot came built in and I have used it to connect my notebook to the internet.
What I thought this was about was an Android equivalent to WMWIFI, which allowed one to do the hot spot thing but ATT could not detect the phone was tethered, I looked for that because I was grandfathered with ATT and would be able to have unlimited data for $30 a month. But I could not find this function for Android, so had to go with a tethered plan for $45 (all data inclusive) and limited to 4GB a month. If I could do the equivalent of tether without a tethered account, then I could stream video, etc, unlimited.
But this app looks to me to just be an implementation of the stock tethering. Or am I misunderstanding it?

Your misunderstood. This app is undetectable by carriers, in my case sprint, and allows tethering without paying per month for it. All you need is a data package and rooted.

I'm within my 30 days. I wonder if I can drop the extra $15 for tethering, and also go back to my grandfathered unlimited data. Thanks for the explanation.
Now I need to figure out the rooting process. My Tilt2 was heavily modified (using ROMs and phones by others), but the process was the same for all. Now it appears that every phone seems to have a different root process and I can't find it for the Inspire.
Another Question Though
Would this also allow me to download video, streaming it to the phone, without ATT knowing it, or is it just for hot spotting?

Streaming it to the phone? What do you mean? The WiFi tether does exactly what it says: WiFi tethering. So yea you can download videos and netflix with your computer.
I don't have an inspire but I believe if your connected via your WiFi router you can stream videos from your computer to your phone. I've never tried though.

The nexus s comes preloaded with tethering, this isnt limited by your carrier as the nexus s has no restrictions on this per agreement with tmobile or as an unlocked edition thru best buy, wife has a nexus s and no tethering package added on and it works fine, open up your setting and select wireless & networks then scroll down to tethering and portable hotspots
My laptop has had this issue before i got an android phone. I had wm phone. Im still trying to find out why.

IDK about a hack for recognition but I do use EasyTetherPro.apk on unrooted device and I have more than tripped my tether usage allotment ....Still going. It's got a setup for tablets too, though I've never tested anything besides USB tethering and the app is legit there ..so.....Maybe give that a try...Its 10$ ($9.99) but to bypass my 8gb limit =priceless
HTC Touch Pro 2 is Windows Mobile... and that post is 6 years old.
Thinking about getting a tablet without 3G, since i have a Captivate already. It would be nice to tether it to my Captivate, but I have a couple of questions.
Has anyone successfully tethered an Android tablet to a Captivate using the phone as a wireless hotspot?
Would AT&T be able to detect anything, since there is no chance the browser string would give away the fact the destination was tethered?
TIA
I use tethering all the time between my cappy and my Asus TF, works flawlessly. Not too sure about if AT&T would notice tho...

I use Wirelesss Tether for this with no problems.
My nook picks up mobileAP but doesn't like wireless tether. Fyi, nook is android based. Same whether I'm running stock or cfw on the nook.

I wireless tether to my xoom all the time, works great. At&t has never said anything to me.

Yeah, they will be able to detect that you're tethering if you're using the browser on the tablet. I speak from experience, I received the dreaded 'we know you're tethering' letter from ATT several weeks ago.. and I ONLY ever tethered my Asus Transformer.

I've tethered to my Touchpad with no trouble. Still running webOS though, so I can't comment on question one.
I havent had to tether in over a year. Unfortunately, im without internet for next 2wks. Excuse grammar im typing on the phone. I have desktop computer with no wifi card. I have g2x running miui 2.5.25 singhi o3n xp sp3. I plug in computer recognizes lg but when I hit tether I get wizard cant find nec. Software I tried this modded and 3 others. Sadly enough, a yr ago on same phone and computer tether worked fine. I waa rooted on another miui. Usb mass storage and everythinh else works, it just wont let me tether. Any help
Thanks
Are you on tmobile cause they block tethering now if you so get it going there is a possibility it will redirect you to the no tether Page

Are you serious? I didnt know tmobile USA had blocked tethering. I thought I read someone say tmo is the only carrier still allowing tethering. Are there any other options? Thank you

Not blocked really...the d!ckheads @ tmob have decided to allow tethering for $4.99 a month.
I'm mildly annoyed. Tethering worked fine on my GX2; but the new GS3 is locked down unless I opt to pay ransom to T mob.
(and yes, I gather that I can jailbreak the GS3 but I ain't facile enough. Hell, I can't even understand how to get the GX2 out of boot loop and I've been lurking here for months...LOL)
I'm hoping someone might provide some insight into this situation: I have a Galaxy s3 with Tmobile 5gigabyte data plan. I rooted it, installed Jellybean and am running a wifi tether app to "try" to circumvent the $14.99 wifi tethering surcharge they now want to charge. I tether my ipad to my phone, or at least that was the plan. Right after making all the OS changes, the tether worked great. Within 2-3 weeks, however, the speed on the wifi tether app is showing a download speed of 0.2kbps -- just enough for my iPad to see the tether, but not enough to do any browsing with the iPad.
I talked with a tmobile tier 2 tech and he said that their network can see when another device is using my phone (and their network) to access the internet... I thought that a rooted phone broke me free from the tmobile shackles, but is it possible that they can still see -- by IP address, etc. -- that my dataplan is using unauthorized access? I'm not clear on what exactly I'm asking here, but the point is is I cannot seem to keep an adequate speed on a rooted phone to tether my iPad to it and it is frustrating! I haven't seen one post on this issue, but I cannot be the only one out there experiencing this. Thanks in advance for any advice/help...
Yes, they can tell.
There's something about user agents, but I don't know if you can make that pass from an iOS device.
