So this is my first real post here, and i hope you will be able to help me
I bought my TF700 (I live in Europe, and I bought it in Europe also) in early august, I've rooted it and it works fine, but I've recently gotten interested in those custom ROMs I hear about on the web or by my friends.
The thing is, (if I got it right) that I can't flash a custom ROM without unlocking the bootloader. But on the Asus' Website, is cleary stated above the unlock tool link:
Furthermore, such repaired Revised Product will not be covered under the warranty of the Original Product; the software of the repaired Revised Product will not be deemed the software of the Original Product and will not receive ASUS software updates.

So unlocking the bootloader implies a loss of waranty.
But I was told that it was illegal to void the waranty in Europe simply because of a software modification, after searching on the web I found :
Given European Directive 1999/44/CE, just the fact that you modified or changed the software of your device, is not a sufficient reason to void your statutory warranty.

So here's my question, due to this European Law, does unlocking my Bootloader void the waranty ?
Can Asus refuse to repair it for free if something goes wrong when flashing a custom ROM even with that law ?

It implies the loss of the warranty as it covered your TF700 when you bought it. For the reason you set out below:

...they probably won't get away with it if they try and charge you for a repair under warranty due to hardware defects (clicking screen, broken glass, etc. -- but.... they WILL try, so you might need to bring a lawyer/advocate into the fight -- pro deo, if need be.

Yes, IF it comes down to a software issue (say, screwing up your bootloader), they can, and they will. Hardware issues: (as I already said, they probably can not refuse to repair under warranty, but they will try and bigmouth you into paying for it.

As you hopefully made out, it's neither option: it depends on what issue (hardware vs. software) lies underneath the problem you'd want to return for.
EDIT: if your device has been nice and sturdy since August and you have tested it rhoroughly for all known issues, it's highly unlikely you'll run into problems as long as you read, read, read and read again before doing anything. All the recoveries, ROMs. etc. have come a long way and we have experienced developers in here. With a healthy device, pretty much the only way you'll brick is by either doing something stupid, such as not following directions. (I have yet to see a spontaneous brick in here of a device of an experienced and careful user; to date, I can only recall Rom Manager-related bricks and such -- we already know that it doesn't work on the 700, yet people fail to read ahead... and subsequently get in trouble).

As long as you make sure it's physically fit, you'll be OK. The only thing I've had some headaches with is installing the drivers on my Windows box, but I can hardly fault the 700 or ASUS for that, can I?

Does the tool provided by Asus work offline ? So that they won't get my S/N "blacklisted" in the waranty center ?

No, when you're offline, they don't get your serial, so they won't unlock your 700. There is now way around this -- also, since the encryption is so strong, there will be no 3rd party unlockers.
So to you: either swallow hard and unlock, or run stock. I didn't need to swallow hard.
I'm thinking about unlocking, too.
My question now is, how I can I brick my infinity out of not following instructions?
Since nvflash does not work with JB bootloader it seemed to be a problem for some people.

If you either use ROM Manager, or wipe data with a dysfunctional recovery. And obviously a healthy dose of general bad luck does the trick as well.

I saw someone in a french forum who had a issue after installing recovery using ROM Managers. He send his tablet to Asus assuming to pay for the repair. They send him back after 1 week and they never said to pay. I think that Asus will accept a software issue since it take about 5 min to repair and make the customers happy.

Just sent in mine, even though I was already inlocked.
As long as there's no causality between you unlocking it and the defect, you have nothing to worry about the first 6 months after purchase.
I used this as well against Asus, and they have now completed the repairs.
It is coming back my way as we speak/write
So no problems here, even though I had to insist politely!
Would you mind telling us from witch country you are from and what the reason for the repair has been?
Did Asus attempt to decline the repair?

Quite an interesting story, actually!
I sent it in for the (well know) lifting screen issue.
They said I might have to pay 75€ for their expert to judge whether or not there's a causality between the lifting screen and unlocking. I was sure that there wasn't, so I sent mine in.
Right after it got shipped to their repair centre (in the Czech Republic) I sent them another mail about the fact that my keyboard sometimes clicks when I want to pick up my tablet (when docked).
They were nice enough to let the repair centre know, and surprise surprise...
I got mine back within 5 working days (Bravo Asus! Nice job on that!) and they have fixed both my screen and my keyboard!!
I was sure they were going to forget about that, but they didn't!
So once again; I've been hearing a lot of negative stuff about their repair centres, but I can honestly say that they solved this very nicely!
The trick is to be nice and know-it-all and angry at the same time while corresponding!

I forgot to answer the 'did Asus decline to repair' question!
Asus told me they weren't sure about this being a free repair, so they warned me by saying (not actual quotes ):
We might charge you 75€ for having an expert take a look at it.
If there is causality between unlocking the device and this issue, we cannot take responsibility and make you pay the 75€.
After that, you may decide yourself if you'd like to repair it anyway (at your expense) or if you'd like us to send it back as it is.

As long as they'll be as good to you the first 6 months after purchase as they've been to me, you really don't have anything to fear, except for maybe bricking it. But to be honest, I haven't heard of a lot of tf700s bricking

since last 2 weeks my phone was not vibrating. It was never fallen and never faced any damage..
i submitted device at HTC center and last night i get call from them saying its a physical damage phone so its not anymore in warranty ?
wtf !!!!!!!!
a 30k phone is no more in warranty when it has faced no issue from my end !
I called higher level support they said "It is having physical damage somewhat in battery or in motherboard part".
WTF >>>????

Tell them that they need evidence to prove that this phone is damaged.

As much as i read there TOC and all i know.. there is no matter of customer if damage is on motherboard as of circuit failure or device failure !

Hey guys ! i got reply from HTC team saying firstly "The handset has physical damage"... then talking higher authorities they said "Its a internal damage caused during water or some physical accident"... i pulled them more and now they are sticking that its due to third party software install.. "i said , that they too provide 3rd party tools with the initial device." I think they want to say its warranty is void due to bootloader unlock and rooting device ? even i have relocked device while submitting them..
well what should i do next to get it replaced or repaired without paying them ???
also, if possible should i go with legal case in consumer court to win my part ?

when you unlock your bootloader with the htcdev site or whatever using the unlock tool, your IMEI gets posted so no matter if you relock it I don't think you can get it fixed.

Say that they have changed excuses three times, tell them the excuses. Say that you will be forced to take legal action if you are charged.

and what if after getting phone without repair if i file a legal case on them ?
Also, as my ROM is removed so what should i do next ? how should i get it back or how do i install new ROM or OS whatever..

Well we can't do anything if HTC won't repair it sorry, people on xda help people get out boot loop, flash roms software bugs and problems and I don't see how they will fix it they have already said no. I am very sorry

Bought the the device on black friday and almost regreting it have been able to root or rom

I originally bought mine on Black Friday but took it back the next day because Office Depot had the 32gb on sale for $20 more. It seems I got lucky because my tablet unlocked.
According to many of the members here, the unlock tool isn't working on many devices yet. Some say it's due to the fact that Asus hasn't added the serial numbers to their data base. Who knows the reason? The fact still remains that many cannot unlock their device. For devices running the Jelly Bean bootloader this means NO recovery and NO root. Hopefully Asus will solve the problem because many are frustrated.
Have you tried to use the unlocker from Asus yet? There is much info on the subject in this forum. I suggest doing some intense reading up on the subject. All of the answers to your questions are probably held within this forum.

I was an iOS user till 2 weeks ago that I bought the 300, and i tought i wont have any problems with the unlucking/rooting process, but now i'm really frustrated, have you solved this problem?

Good idea, Tamaskan. I just downloaded and installed the unlocker apk but it seems things have changed and a lot of people are having problmes getting i to work. It may very well require registering before the unlocker can be used. I would at least give it a try if it weren't working for me. :good:

I've bought my HTC One XL directly from Australia, through Telstra. But now I live in Brazil
Well, I bricked my phone pretty hard. I even bothered reading all the topics about my stituation to see if there was any available solution. Turns out there isn't.
Well, at least through the community. From what I gathered, HTC is able to refurbish it and send it back - or at least exchange for another one.
The problem is, since this device is not sold in Brazil, HTC-Brazil simply don't do any kind of repair on it. So, my only hope lives in a good australian soul accepting to receive my phone and do me this big favour of checking if HTC-Australia would help me - even if I have to pay some technical fee.
I know this forum is not exacly for something like this, but I'm out of ideas. And since my investment was pretty big and I can't afford another one right now, I'm here begging for some help.
If this good soul exists, please, PM me so we can go through details.

Thanks man. Well, I was absolutely used to the HOX with Tegra 3, once I got the XL I thought I know almost everything. It worked well for a while, but things went sour when I tried to downgrade. I think it corrupts some stuff on the phone, and after that I think it's not possible to install a RUU. Well, I tried to anyway and found out that the hard way.
I was already pretty honest with them. I talked to them online, told them the whole story, but they said they could do nothing for me since I was in Brazil. And, as I said, HTC-Brazil was completely useless, since they don't sell this device here.
That's why I'm trying to find some help from an australian mate here at the forum. 'Til now, I had no success.
I found a guy who does JTAG here in Brazil. Since I'm having a hard time doing it trough HTC, I think I'll try this one last resort. I think I got almost nothing to lose by now.
What exactly do you need someone to do for you?

I'd need that person to give me an address to send the device, and after that I'd use this address to ask HTC what should I do.
Possibly I'd need it to be sent to HTC or Telstra.
But it's ok, by now I took the second possibility. I sent it to be used in a test with Riffbox. Now all I have to do is pray, as much as I can.

Thanks man. I found int while I was doing my research yesterday.
Anyway, I found another site, a brazilian one (amigoandroid.com.br) which does the same service. I called him, and he sound pretty good technically, even explaining to me why jtagiing the Tegra version is a no-go. Also, I found some pretty good reviews about him in some brazilian forums.
He also explained to me that this process for the One XL is still in beta testing. But, as I said, I got pretty much nothing more to lose. For me it's ok if it ends up bricked if it makes future bricked devices come back to life.
Beside that, the price is basically the same, but I save money from the shipping and save some time I'd use to explain brazilian customs that the device was already mine, that I was sending it for repair and yadda yadda.
Anyway, thanks for the help. Will keep posted and, in cade anyone ends up screwed like me, they may fin a light at the end of the tunnel.
I recently had to send my Infinity to Asus twice for some warranty repair and on the last trip, they replaced the WiFi so now I can't get OTA updates or unlock the tablet. Can anyone tell me is there is someone specifically that I can contact to have this fixed? I tried the Asus-USA rep on this site and sent an email to [email protected] (which was posted on another thread as a possible source of help), but so far I haven't been able to get any help on this situation. I really wanted to unlock and give CROMI a try, but I can't until this gets fixed, if it ever gets fixed. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Call them directly. Don't take no for an answer. Tell them you know others have had it done. Ask to speak to a manager.

Regular tech support will not get you the results you want. They will just continue to issue an RMA but they can't fix the information stored on the servers and I don't think the service centers can either. The information they enter is correct on their end but for whatever reason it does not update the servers in Taiwan.

I had seen that thread before and I was going to try that, but I can't even access the Asus Device Tracker site. I go to devicetracker.asus.com, sign in and then I see a "Page no found" error and am booted back to the login page. Anyways, I got another email from Tien and after some back and forth, he agreed to create a case for me so that when I call the support line, they'll be able to see that I'm not bull****ting them. Still, it's pretty ridiculous that we have to jump through all these hoops to get basic functionality. What do the non-nerds do? Yes, but this problem is keeping me from even getting OTA updates. I'm pretty sure that those are important to everybody.

Ask for a replacement. Someone in an other forum received 600€ after many calls. He said he will wait for the next infinity.

Alright, here's the story. --
I bought this refurbished Transformer tf700t, and eventually got around to rooting it. The only issue I had with that was downgrading the build from 10.6.1.14.10 to 10.6.1.14.8.
Easy peasy, no problem.
Next, obviously to install a custom ROM, I needed to unlock the thing. It gave me a network error, which I found was because I didn't register with Asus. I go to do that, only to find that the serial number is unknown.
I've browsed for about 5 hours now, and I'm almost positive that it's impossible at this point to get the serial to register to unlock, or for that matter, unlock at all.
So this thread is more about 'Am I actually screwed' or is there another way around the network error/register issues?

I got to the Asus support chat, and explained my situation.
He gave me the actual serial number based off the Mac address of my tablet, and thankfully, it worked with the device tracker. sort of.
It came up in the list as my device, yet it can't locate or communicate with it.
So now I'm just trying new things to see what will work.

I can't unlock mine either! I have had multiple talks with Asus to no avail, I am also unable to register on the device tracker website. Asus just keeps telling me to wait and try again later. Please help if you can.
If you have blocked the OTA files, froze them, or deleted them, it won't let you unlock, FYI. If you restore them, you can unlock if this is your problem.

If this is the case would I get that dammed network error from the unlock tool? I had to downgrade to 10.8, so maybe that messed things up. Is there a way to check and see if I've blocked them, or deleted them?

I have read and followed dozens of this stories and have never read that frozen or removed "OTA files" (????) have anything to do with it - and I seriously doubt it.
The most common reason for the unlock tool not to work is that your serial number or MAC address of the main board are not registered on their server in Taiwan. This happens most often after a RMA return, but sometimes out of the box.
You need to be persistent, keep pestering them that you insist on being able to use their device tracker service.
You could even tell them OTA updates are not working.
The regional help centers seem to loath having to contact HQ in Taiwan to get this fixed. And they are the only ones who can.

**** sorry, internet went out for while. Basically, I got the store I bought it from to swap them out. I'm unlocked and flashed, man!

After 3 weeks of emailing Asus support they finally told me they only allow new units to use their services (unlocking ,OTA's and device tracking). Something that they do not disclose when they are trying to sell it to you. Unless there is a change in policy at Asus we are screwed. If we had bought a secondhand unit we would be looked after better by Asus.

They are lying to you. Ask them to be put through to support in Taiwan (or find an email address) and they will add you to the database. Many people have done it now.

I hope you are right, sbdags, many RMA,s have been added to the database but I would like confirmation that a refurb has been successful. I will keep plugging away at the giant sloth that is Asus support.
