Samsung dock vs eBay dock - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hopefully this hasn't been addressed already...I'm upgrading my pc to Windows 8 and search in tapatalk is lackluster.
I'm looking for a dock for my note. I'm thinking of getting one of the $10 eBay ones, but I have two questions.
1, with either dock will the tab recognize it's docked? I it to automatically launch something when docked so I want to know if it will recognize either type of dock as a dock vs regular charger.
2, will the note fit in either dock with the Samsung book cover? Not a big deal, but if it'll fit in one and not the other it may sway my decision.
Thanks!

i have the same questions! i'd really like to find a dock i can use a case with. i got a cheap ebay one for my s3 that's just a universal micro usb dock, and it was great for a while, but now it stopped working. obviously there's no 'universal' dock since the note has the 30 pin connector...

i would assume so too, but i thought it was worth a try here, since someone else already asked the same question.

Any other dock that uses dock pins?

I think the google desktop dock is way to expensive, as i only need it as a charger and have no need for the A2DP function.
But all the cheap dock's on ebay uses the USB connection and not the dock pins, has anybody found a cheap dock that has dock pins connection?
It's much more convenient to be able to just drop the phone in a dock instead of needing to connect the phone to a dock, and be able to use the dock mode is a plus when you use it as an alarm clock.
I was wondering the same thing, is it that hard to reproduce that? I havnt seen anything besides the usb ones either and i have heard it can screw up the usb connection of n1s so didnt want to buy one of those
Exactly the same thoughts here
does anyone have specs of which pins do what? (i.e. do you apply +5 v to pin 1, ground to pin2, etc)
i've got some ideas on a homebrew dock.

Search for the thread: "Dock Pinout"
It seams that it alot harder, that there is a binary communication in one of the pins, not just a current that tells it to go into dock mode...
Doh! delete my post haha.
Just bought an original Nexus One Desktop Dock brand new from Ebay for $15.00 . The seller has 49 more available. It arrived today and it's all original with sealed packaging. Just throwing it out there if anyone is interested.

Too bad it isn't shipped for free outside the US. Shipping costs are more than half of the costs of the dock itself :silly:

brought last week http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/330770220824?item=330770220824
Dock US $15.00
Shipping US $8.46 (Germany)
Thats €18,65 (a new one costs 60€ at launch day ..)
I bought the dock when I first got the nexus one. If you guys get one for cheap and want to continue using the Nexus One, go for it. I mean the phone does slide down easly if the bump against the dock. But the lack of wear on the usb connector is well worth it.
Do you mind giving any feedback on this unit? I want to buy a separate charger cause I have a spare battery and OEM dock the previous owner bought new with the phone but I want to be able to charge the spare battery without swapping back and forth from the phone. Its a real hassle. I don't want to buy a charger that ends up cooking the battery.

Original Galaxy tab 7 car dock work for tab 2?

I used to have a galaxy tab 7 and i bought the official car dock for it. Will the same dock work for the new galaxy tab 2 7.0? If it will I'll probably buy one, if not I'm gonna preorder a nexus 7 tab.

You should ready about that n7 in the general forum before you order one.
I'm pretty sure the dock will work fine though.

The only thing Im not crazy about with the N7 tab is no sd card slot. That's the only thing swaying me towards the Samsung. I think I would be happy with either one but having the extra expand-ability would be nice.
I've bought usb on the go converter and cable date (plus charge) for the first galaxy tab (P1000) to use in my GT2 and so far the usb otg works fine (haven't tried the cable data though).
It's the same 30 pin connector after all unlike apple connector which I've heard from a friend different generation have different voltage or something inside altough the pin stays the same.
So I think the car dock should works normally but if you can you might want to ask the seller first just to make sure.

iBolt GS3 car dock doesn's charge GS4

My boss bought me a GS4 a couple of days ago and gave me an iBolt car dock that was originally purchased with a couple GS3's about a year back. The GS4 fits into the car dock rather nicely, but the USB connector doesn't charge it. The car dock will still charge a GS3 and my old HTC One X, as well as pretty much any accessory I could find to try, but not the GS4. I also tested this with the iBolt car dock my boss has, with the same results.
Has anyone else noticed this or know if there is something I can do about it?
As mentioned in the accessories forum the s3 dock doesn't work unless you purchased it after early May.
The ibolt pro dock does work and is, imho, totally worth the price.

Try contacting iBolt customer service. Don't know what they'll do for you, but they are usually responsive. Samsung made some change to the docking mode/pins and it looks like they updated the iBolt cable to account for that.

Official one http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ET-H10FAUWESTA If you have the 50% off code still from registering your phone with Samsung, this would be something worth using it on
If you search on Amazon.com you can find other ones for under $20, search for a MHL adapter for the Note 4..... different phones need different adapters so I wouldnt get one unless it specifically said for the Note 4.... I know someone else will give more information than what I can, so give it a while here, maybe someone will find you a cheaper one yet.
I got mine from monoprice. Works with my Note 4, Note 3, S3 and HTC One M7. The smaller plug is an 11 pin to 5 pin adapter needed for Samsung devices. Not needed on the HTC One.
http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=108&cp_id=10833&cs_id=1083314&p_id=10021&seq=1&format=2
it's plenty out there.
Many people doesn't know that any MHL cable will work on our Note 4.
The older version of MHL will only needs a 4/5 pins to 11 pins adapter that costs less than USD 5
I actually using my old Smart Dock for Note 2 and it works with Note 4

If you have WiFi just get the chromecast it does the same plus more.. but if your stuck on getting a wired solution then ONLY purchase the one linked in the second post /the Above quote.
Like he stated above register your device with Samsung they WILL give you a50%off code on ALL ACCESSORIES through them. I've bought ones offline from dealers who has 10 THOUSAND+ sales with a 99% + satisfaction rating. I bought a mhl adapter from them and got it plugged it in and every so often it would drop out and go to snow on the screen. Come to find out it was a knock off being sold as a legit own. I returned it and got a refund. But the seller was stunned cause they had a huge shipment of worthless mhl knock offs.
So just buy it from Samsung the official one, it'll last used it on my note 2 and note 4 until I bought the chromecast. Both will do hdmi and surround sound. Not to mention the one that's compatible with the note 2 and 4 is also compatible with s3 s4 and other devices running usb2.0 from Samsung.
Don't buy the knock offs or imitations they don't transfer data at the same rate as the official one and audio quality isn't as good.
But honestly if you have WiFi in your place get the chromecast, you can mirror anything in your screen turn a movie on from the other side of the house and use your phone for other reasons.
Thanks a lot for the info just order one from Samsung. Not got wifi right now moving home

I kept holding off on ordering. I was going to order this morning and it's gone.
Chances are Samsung removed it from Amazon and there are no 3rd party sellers offering it. Not sure why unless they are trying to force the Dex station, want you to have to order the pad from them, or want everyone to buy their Usb-C to HDMI cable instead.
Honestly, I don't feel the pad is worth it. If you are willing to spend that much, get a wireless charger and Usb-C to HDMI plug instead. I have the station and works great, but the cable and charger combo is better IMO.
I like the Dex pad. Active cooling. I wish it had the Ethernet port too but probably took away from the bandwidth. I bought a Logitech mouse and keyboard to set up one port for the receiver and the other for a usb thumb drive.
Well. I think I figured out part of the mystery. Samsung just knocked the price down a lot on their website. Is it on clearance already?
One day sale. $40 shipped.
USB-C to HDMI does its job for me
Anybody else get in on the Dex from Samsung's website? I think it is only $40 today.

I mentioned earlier the day before that I think I was one day sale. I don't know how or why that affected amazon sellers. Perhaps Samsung notified them but they weren't extended he sale price and took the Dex pad down for one day.
B&H has the Dex Pad Dock for $99, or you can get it and a Duo charger for free if you order a Note 9 from them. The phone is unlocked.

Best buy has them for $75
I got mine from Samsung for 75. DeX pad does work with the note 9. However, the hdmi cord that came with it didnt feel right. Sometimes it wouldn't connect to my monitor. I used another hdmi cord and it worked fine. I barely used the DeX, probably used it 1-2 times since the time I received the product.
My $40 order said it would take 7-10 days to ship out. It went out Friday so hopefully I will receive this week sometime. Looks like it could be handy for a bigger screen. I really think Samsung should try for a lapdock type of system. Motorola bombed it trying to make money for every model of phone. Are Razer or Asus's implementation any good? I think Samsung should make one with a good IPS or AMOLED screen and with a huge battery under keyboard. Maybe 12-13" and has USB3.1 and USB type-c ports. Maybe even a user installed SSD slot for a local cloud backup for desktop experience. Android is getting so good alternatives to Chromebook would be nice if designed well with good work flow. Optimize it so there input latency with a mouse is gone.
I wonder if they could make it <.5" or <1.25cm thick with 40000mah battery for a portable laptop. They could probably more a nice gimmicky folding version with their bendable P-OLED but the price would be wrong. Heck somebody should make a good universal one and maybe that will force OEMs to take notice.
Or any rumors between Android and Chrome OS on the horizon again?

Do you have to remove your case for it to connect with the USB C on the pad?

Yes, however, it only works with the extended usbc adapter that I bought on Amazon. So it extends from my phone/case and fits into the dexpad just fine. Here's a pic of it with the adapter attached to the dexpad. I used the Samsung rugged case btw.
