[Q] Weird YouTube Issue. Has anyone experienced this? - General Questions and Answers

So I've attached two images below. They are of two different YouTube videos being played on the Dolphin browser on my Note 10.1. As you can see, one plays normally, but the other is a grey box. It usually takes a while to actually start playing and when it does, it becomes a different aspect ratio (4:3 instead of the 16: 9 or 16:10 that it should be). Does anyone know why this happens and have a way to fix it? l know a simple solution would be to use the YouTube application or the YouTube mobile site, but I prefer the quality options of the desktop site.

Youtube buffering issue

I'm currently on 3.1 and facing major issues with YouTube. While the playback is smooth, the buffering of the video is pretty awful. I'm sure its not any issue with my router, as the same video streams pretty fast on my Captivate and laptop. Anyone else facing the same issue? Thanks in advance.

I find buffering during playback almost never works. If you navigate to the homescreen and then back to the youtube app playback will resume.

Yes, I have this problem also. No matter what I play on Youtube using the built in app, it plays fine, but stops to buffer constantly. I have a perfectly good connection and can play these videos on other machines. In fact, they played without all the buffering on the 3.01 software. Even regular def videos have the problem.
I just watched about 8 videos using the YouTube app. I set all videos to play in HD within my settings and I don't have any buffering issues. Right now I'm watching a 12 minute video of Battlefield 3, which had to buffer on my iPad, and so far no buffering what so ever
I'm loving the TF more and more!

The video is freaking sick!!! Have you rebooted it? I keep it off while not in use, so I just turn it on when needed. Also, are you close to your router? I'm a few feet away from mine.

It doesn't matter. The same video plays smoothly on the stock browser, without buffering issues. I'm feel its something to do with the Youtube app
I have this issue with only true 720p or 1080i videos. Remember every video says HD even if its not.

I had the issue in the app with 360p videos also.
I know this is going to seem ridiculous, but try something as an experiment. Change your dns server on the device to googledns or open dns. Lt us know if that impacts anything. I have a suspicion about the way dns routing may happen via certain isp's. This is something that has been going on with iOS devices regularly and I'm curious to see if it carries across platforms.
Sorry I can't be more help, but for the limited time it takes, can't hurt to try!

Sorry, I don't have my android device yet :/ you can try changing it on the router, that also fixed iOS devices.
8.8.4.4 and 8.8.8.8 are google's, 4.4 seems anecdotally quicker. http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/performance.html

I'm in the same room as my router and it does it under almost all circumstances. Funny thing is that sometimes it will load just fine. I haven't experimented much with the browser YouTube though.

Just did another random test with the YouTube app and that 12 minute video buffered just fine. I even fast forwarded and rewinded to different parts and it picked up and buffered just fine. I don't know what the deal is.

I don't even find an option in the TF to move to OpenDNS. My Youtube app still has pathetic buffering. I'm trying to watch a 50 min video on Youtube and it buffers always. Pretty frustrating
In my case, the problem appears to be something to do with my route to Youtube or the particular server that I'm using there. It bothers my desktop too. I can play high def videos from Vimeo and other sources full screen on the TF, so I assume that youtube would work fine if I could get a good connection. I've always used openDNS, so that's not it. I can't even play 240p videos on Youtube any more.
Here is an interesting thread.

and here is an official youtube video test page.

I don't see an option to change it on the tf.
Log into your router and configure those two as your dns server....I'd bet your other devices will be thankful too.
If not you can always delete them!
Ok I don't seem to be having any buffering issues whatsoever anymore. The only thing I have noticed is that with HD videos you have to pause the videos before fast forwarding or rewinding if you want it to properly buffer. Other than that everything is working great!
I started noticing this buffering issue yesterday while trying to watch a HD clip.
It would do it every 10 seconds... so I started to do some searching.
Initially I suspected Android until I found this link.
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=4cd2cff3bad5f19d&hl=en
Then I realised PCs, ipads etc are also affected.
The strange thing is though that flash imbedded video works fine.
Now my question is, would Youtube which is owned by google be making it difficult for other companies that dont have flash? and did the Facebook app dissappear because Google+ started?
hmmm I wonder...

Youtube App won't stream 1080p

Today, I got my Nexus 5 in the mail. So far I'm in love with the screen! However, every day I watch about 2 hours of YouTube vids on my phone and I can't seem to get 1080p video's. I've also tried the Viral Youtube app, but it only alows me to watch 720p. Every video I tried to watch in 1080p were 720p on my phone, but 1080p on my computer. Any tips?
The new Nexus 7 II also has the same problem. The only way to watch 1080p videos at the moment is to spend a few bucks for the paid version of the Viral player

Thanks for your answer! Not really happy with Google for not having updated the app yet. However, Google had to perfectionize the phone so I don't blame them.

it limits quality to 720p..
personally i find this enough often android seems to have issues buffering videos even on strong wifi connections.
Don't forget that it will only allow HQ on mobile data connections (unless I'm mistaken) it reserves HD for WiFi connections.

Or you could install flash player and just directly go to the youtube website. I do this quite often.
I guess this is why when I share a video from youtube to XBMC via Yatse that it plays in 720p. Google really needs to fix this. I dont really care about 1080p on the device itself, even though it would be cool, but I use my phone to send youtube content to XBMC all the time and it sucks that its sending 720p instead of 1080p.
I'm trying the free version of viral from the play store, but it's only doing 720p.
Got the Viral Pro app, which had te 1080p button indeed. However, once pressed, the video keeps loading and loading. The app does show what the length of the video is, but it doesn't seem to load.
Just to be clear, the video I watched could be streamed in 1080p on my computer.
Hope someone can help me out with this one!
Edit: Found out that also 480p doesn't work.
How do you see the resolution? I only see an HD.

I'm going to chime in here because ever since the new 5.xx YouTube app came out, 1080p playback has been disabled. I've been using a rooted and CM10.1 installed ROM on my Nook HD+ for a few months now and when the update from 4.5 to 5.x came out, the videos on the 1080p display were very pixelated and worse than the 720p video I would see using IMDB.com app in watching trailers.
I ended-up finding a 4.5.x YouTube app, uninstalling the 5.xx from the Nook, install the 4.5.x and disabling all updates on the YouTube app. Well, that has worked nicely and on my Nexus 4 the new 5.xx looked fine on the 720p so I left it alone. Now I have the Nexus 5 and we are back again with the pixelation. I tried uninstalling the 5.xx YouTube app... not possible. I tried to install the old 4.5.x and that didn't work, so I'm pretty much stuck unless I can find another YouTube app that will properly stream 1080p youtube video.
What's also troubling is that the videos on my Nexus 5 appear to be choppy even with 720p playback. Mind you, I'm watching dash-cam videos that are not very popular, and I have to admit that at times non-popular videos seem to load SO MUCH LONGER than all the popular ones. Seems like Google gives priority to the popular videos and makes you wait for all others.
Anyways, I'm very disappointed and hope someone can find an alternative or get Google to address this issue.

YouTube app

What's up,
So I've had my Tablet Z for just about a month and the only real complaint I have is the YouTube app video quality is pretty bad! What little setting adjustments there are don't do anything to help. It looks like my player is playing lo-res 480p video on an HD screen even when HD is highlighted as the play option.
Netflix, Sony Video player and inline/embedded videos all look great so I know it's specific to the YouTube player.
Hoping that the update that's due out this week will alleviate the problem, part of the update addresses the YouTube app. I didn't know that manufacturer's had their own versions of the Google core apps, learn something new everyday.
Anybody else?
Thanks.
They don't have their own version of the apps. They can't. Youtube, like many other apps, is closed source. The fix includes something in the file system related to YT, but not the app itself. I guess the update is related to videos most of the times stop working in the middle of it for no reason. Embed with a browser, and other apps, work just fine.

Check out the app called viral it solves the problem plus you can use it in floating mode or minimize it to play while screen is off when I started using viral it could go to 1080p which looks gorgeous on this device but for some reason I can only choose up to 720p but it's not tacky like it is on the official app

I think it runs at least 720p on supported videos... I think there is a hack to force use 1080p, not sure...
So I uninstalled the most recent update and the video quality dramatically improves! I'll stay with 4.5.17 until they have another major updates.I'll miss some of the cooler navigation features of the new version, but is rather have the picture quality back.
I'm surprised I'm there's only one this affected.

Nexus Player new Soap Opera Effect w/ v5.1

My Nexus player has been struck with the dreaded Soap Opera Effect. Essentially it's a motion blur type effect that affects streaming video. Netflix, Plex, etc.
This has been happening since updating to v5.1. Anyone else having this issue? Any ideas on how to fix it?
This video will give you an idea. To see the effect, I had to run at 720p 60fps or higher.

Isn't 60fps going to do that every time? Go back to 24fps and enjoy...
Maybe I'm confused...
Yeah sorry, I didn't explain clearly.
On the Nexus player we're not watching 60fps content. Just regular 24 or 30 or whatever.
I posted the youtube video so that you might see an example of what we're seeing on our TV. When watching that example video, I was only able to see the motion blur when I was watching it at 60 fps.
If you're getting any sort of frame-interpolation on video playback it is more likely that it is being done by your TV (if you have a 120Hz+ television) then the Nexus Player itself, because as far as I know the player does not have the software or hardware capabilities to do so and even if it did it wouldn't showup as a bug it would have to be enabled with some sort of third-party hack or application.
tl;dr: if you're seeing frame-interpolation in your videos, check your TVs settings and ensure "Smooth Motion" or "True Motion" or anything with that sort of name is disabled.
We're looking into that. It's an old POS TV that does 1080p, and not much else. We looked through the menu's and online, but found nothing about motion or any sort of video processing.
I'm going to test the Nexus Player with another TV and see what happens.
can confirm
It's not the TV can confirm after the update the nexus player is experiencing soap opera effect. are there settings to disable the effects?
The same thing is happening to me since the Android 5.1 update on my Nexus Player, but only under certain circumstances. The tv it is attached to is 1080p 60hz.
If i cast from plex to the Nexus Player, I get the soap opera effect, however if I use the plex app on the Nexus Player itself, I do not get the effect. Its infuriating. Does anyone know what is causing this or how to fix it?

I have the exact same issue. And my TV is an old Sharp 60hz which has none of that Motion/Flow technology. It only happens when I cast. No issue if I use the app. I am not sure I like this effect.
Ok....well this brings up my question....
I installed showbox via air share. ...I was seeing how well it works (testing it) it I notice on the whole horizontal bottom...2inch thick it's black/white. .........all of the movie is colored but the 2inch thick whole bottom is b/w. ....I also notice after 25 to 30 min into the movie it buffed and went to the beginning of movie (played on movie) haven't tried a different movie yet
It seems the soap opera effect only happens with apps that use the native android media player (i.e. Showbox, Starz Play, Encore Play) and it is in fact, VERY ANNOYING. I know Chainfire has a tweak that allows you to change the Hz for playback, but I haven't tried it yet.
i actually would like soap opera effect on my android tv box (mk808b plus)..any idea how the nexus player does it?

I'm also keen on trying to port it to my device, I did some digging and found the SDK responsible for it, sadly it's intel, so unless it can be ported to some other system it's essentially useless to us.
It seems to rely on some sort of ISV lib, probably standing for Intel Smart Video, so I presume it'll be a lot of work bringing it to other devices.

Pleaaase i would love video interpolation on my Nexus 6p!!!!
That is the only reason i prefer watching stuff on my pc(with SVP interpolation) even though my nexus AMOLED is awesome(on srgb of course)
