Youtube buffering issue - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently on 3.1 and facing major issues with YouTube. While the playback is smooth, the buffering of the video is pretty awful. I'm sure its not any issue with my router, as the same video streams pretty fast on my Captivate and laptop. Anyone else facing the same issue? Thanks in advance.

I find buffering during playback almost never works. If you navigate to the homescreen and then back to the youtube app playback will resume.

Yes, I have this problem also. No matter what I play on Youtube using the built in app, it plays fine, but stops to buffer constantly. I have a perfectly good connection and can play these videos on other machines. In fact, they played without all the buffering on the 3.01 software. Even regular def videos have the problem.

I just watched about 8 videos using the YouTube app. I set all videos to play in HD within my settings and I don't have any buffering issues. Right now I'm watching a 12 minute video of Battlefield 3, which had to buffer on my iPad, and so far no buffering what so ever
I'm loving the TF more and more!

The video is freaking sick!!! Have you rebooted it? I keep it off while not in use, so I just turn it on when needed. Also, are you close to your router? I'm a few feet away from mine.

It doesn't matter. The same video plays smoothly on the stock browser, without buffering issues. I'm feel its something to do with the Youtube app

I have this issue with only true 720p or 1080i videos. Remember every video says HD even if its not.

I had the issue in the app with 360p videos also.

I know this is going to seem ridiculous, but try something as an experiment. Change your dns server on the device to googledns or open dns. Lt us know if that impacts anything. I have a suspicion about the way dns routing may happen via certain isp's. This is something that has been going on with iOS devices regularly and I'm curious to see if it carries across platforms.
Sorry I can't be more help, but for the limited time it takes, can't hurt to try!

Sorry, I don't have my android device yet :/ you can try changing it on the router, that also fixed iOS devices.
8.8.4.4 and 8.8.8.8 are google's, 4.4 seems anecdotally quicker. http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/performance.html

I'm in the same room as my router and it does it under almost all circumstances. Funny thing is that sometimes it will load just fine. I haven't experimented much with the browser YouTube though.

My DNS is the same as my routers ip address. Can anyone change this to confirm its working?

Just did another random test with the YouTube app and that 12 minute video buffered just fine. I even fast forwarded and rewinded to different parts and it picked up and buffered just fine. I don't know what the deal is.

I don't even find an option in the TF to move to OpenDNS. My Youtube app still has pathetic buffering. I'm trying to watch a 50 min video on Youtube and it buffers always. Pretty frustrating

In my case, the problem appears to be something to do with my route to Youtube or the particular server that I'm using there. It bothers my desktop too. I can play high def videos from Vimeo and other sources full screen on the TF, so I assume that youtube would work fine if I could get a good connection. I've always used openDNS, so that's not it. I can't even play 240p videos on Youtube any more.
Here is an interesting thread.
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=60d5dd88d1570daf&hl=en&start=40
and here is an official youtube video test page.
http://www.youtube.com/my_speed

I don't see an option to change it on the tf.
Log into your router and configure those two as your dns server....I'd bet your other devices will be thankful too.
If not you can always delete them!

Ok I don't seem to be having any buffering issues whatsoever anymore. The only thing I have noticed is that with HD videos you have to pause the videos before fast forwarding or rewinding if you want it to properly buffer. Other than that everything is working great!

I started noticing this buffering issue yesterday while trying to watch a HD clip.
It would do it every 10 seconds... so I started to do some searching.
Initially I suspected Android until I found this link.
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=4cd2cff3bad5f19d&hl=en
Then I realised PCs, ipads etc are also affected.
The strange thing is though that flash imbedded video works fine.
Now my question is, would Youtube which is owned by google be making it difficult for other companies that dont have flash? and did the Facebook app dissappear because Google+ started?
hmmm I wonder...

Netflix on Captivate

Netflix is being a beezy and only allowing their live streaming app on phones with Snapdragon processors, which the Captivate doesn't have. Is it possible to port it over to the Captivate when it comes out?
Only time will tell. They are really working hard to stop the switching on Android or lock down Android.

It's not netflix's fault...they aren't being a beezy.
If they didn't do this they wouldn't have any content to provide and netflix would cease to exist because providers would pull the content.

Wacky.. my friend with an N1 said the same thing. I thought it might have been some hardware decoding/drm issue, but I guess not..

I think there's a good chance they just haven't enabled streaming from the device yet. Most people are reporting the same issue
thanks for the apk. it works except for the streaming. i'm getting the same error 1005 that everyone else is. interestingly, my phone shows up on the netflix device management page as "Android Mobile (Obsolete)".
Have you guys tried PlayOn yet? It streams Netflix to your android thru media server. It works, although kinda laggy. Downfall is after 2 weeks free trial, its a pay subscription

I have only seen 1 report of someone getting it to stream on an android device and with no proof or screens i call bogus

No Hardware DRM = No Netflix Streaming
Hardware level DRM?
Back at Mobile World Congress in February, Qualcomm had an exciting, yet troubling announcement. Their future chips would have the DRM libraries built in to run Netflix streaming. Apparently, the key to getting movie studios' blessing for Android is hardware level DRM. If you buy a phone with a Snapdragon, it might run Netflix. But if you have your eye on a phone with a Hummingbird or Tegra 2, you could be out of luck.

I'll bump this, been using PlayOn for a couple of years now. Not the ideal solution, but there really isn't one. Don't bother with using Media Server, PlayOn has a dedicated app.
It lets you watch a LOT more than just Netflix (Hulu, direct channels, local media files) via transcoding. The streams/movies are sent to your PC, which then transcodes and distributes them.
It creates a DLNA share for viewing streams on your home devices ... it will also, via the new Android app, let you view all of these streams over 3G. I'm currently watching Onion News via PlayOn over 3G (ie, my PC downloaded it, my Android phone app is able to view it remotely).
For me, its a huge boon when traveling. It does have buffering problems at times but that is more because my DSL upstream from home is slower than 3G downloading speed.
^^ was gonna do something similar with a media server program, cant remember which but my isp upload limit is only 600kbps. someday when i have fios or other connection with symetrical upload and download this will be awesome but unfortunately that might be a while
I feel like the only person that cannot access my account. The program just closes after I click login. Im running the phoenix rom

How do you get it to buffer the video? Mine just sits a 0% and then kicks me back to the media selection screen. Do you have to set port forwarding on the router?
Does it lag when playing 720p MKV files? I don't have my Transformer yet, but I've tested PLEX on my HTC Desire HD and it's lags pretty much when playing the 720p MKV's in 5 Mbps in the settings, changing the settings to 1,5 Mbps works fine but the quality is like crap.
Maybe it's just because of my Desire HD, or my broken graphics card
I couldn't get plex working, installalled the server side app on my Windows 7 x64 pc, installed the Android app.
Set it all up, port forwarded on my router, transformer sees all my movies but each time I select a movie it just shows a black screen for a few seconds and then bombs me back to the selection part again.
MP3's on the other hand all work fine, its just movie streaming that I couldn't get sorted out, all divx/xvid movies.
If anyone has any suggestions or pointers i would be greatful
thanks..just updated it from the market and it works great.. streaming 720p High profile files without any lag

What's the difference between direct play and direct stream ?.

AFAIK Plex uses Direct-stream which downgrades quality based on its detection methods for the device. I've noticed definite quality downgrades on some of my stuff, but at least they play. Plex has been the only streamer that I have gotten to play hi-profile files, but it does downgrade them. Some people think it's a hardware problem with Tegra2, but I have not gotten any player (moboplayer, vplayer etc...) to play hi-profile mkv's without immense lag.
Now all Plex needs to do is get working on doing mkv container subtitles over streaming and it would be perfect!
Plex works amazing. Can't wait for Hulu and Netflix support.
Apple Trailers are bad quality but that was the only thing I coud see. But then again who cares, its Apple.

I had severe buffering issues with my Infinity that I returned and when I was playing with the Note at BB it was taking forever to buffer on YouTube but I chalked that up to BB poor/overloaded WiFi. Hoping when my 32g Note arrives this week it buffers better on my home WiFi. I'll update as soon as my Note arrives.

The issue seems to be if you have the video set to HD. Must be a YouTube specific issue as this tablet gets excellent WiFi signal. Hmmm will have to contact Samsung about this, should have no YouTube lag at all one tablet of this quality.
Is there an app that helps cache YouTube for android like there is for PC's?

Haven't had this issue with updated YouTube version 4.0.23. Been playing a lot of Lady Gagy videos to test since they're high quality HD with clean sound. They start within a few seconds of clicking and buffer far in advance of play with no pause over a wimpy 4864/768kbps DSL. Suggest updating the app and making sure your broadband can play on another device such as PC/laptop and if on WIFI try a different channel with less interference from other access points.
No issues whatsoever using the YouTube App or playing YouTube videos from within Opera or the stock browser.

Horrible buffering on my EVO 4g LTE
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
The problem with lag-diagnosis always is to exactly find out WHERE in the chain of data transmission ther might be a lag:
An example:
I open the browser, search and find an American site (which might be complex, buggy, not coded minimalisticly) hosted on an American server and want to load it:
I call the site
Now if the server is very busy my request will be delayed (waiting circle), then the data packets are transferred from host server to regional node then to a central node, then to the undersea data cable to the European central node, then to a local node and then to me home to my router. In alot of cases the data transferral is even much more complex and inclides many more transferral steps.
Now the data packets are transmitted from the router via WiFi to my SGN10.1:
Also here a lot of obstacles could reduce the transferral rate of the data packets and cause a lagginess: distance, how many WiFi devices are connected to the router and are they active or not (e.g. in case my 3 other Galaxy devices and notebook download updates from the Play-store data transferral rate drops to almost zero) or is there another device producing electromagnetic disturbances so that data packets are distorted and have to be reloaded.
Only if all data packets are transferred at maximum speed and arrive undistorted and You find a lag THEN You can speak of a device's lagginess and even THEN You might not know if the lag is not produced by the device itself but some other background apps or apps that secretely send infos or download/upload bloat thus blocking Your processor or surfing.
On 3G/HSP/LTE the issue could be even worse if the PROVIDER decides that everytime there is an interruption in the data transferral the data connection is interrupted to give other participants logged to the cell/radio mast more bandwidth. And THIS differs a lot between different providers HOW they handle the requests for bandwidth. (If You are on 3G You can see this on the graph for the battery in settings how the reception is and this differs a lot even if You donĀ“t move the device from the spot)
You can blame a device to be laggy only when data stored in the internal memory and are scrolled through show lagginess.

Weird YouTube issue. Has anyone experienced this?

So I've attached two images below. They are of two different YouTube videos being played on the Dolphin browser. As you can see, one plays normally, but the other is a grey box. It usually takes a while to actually start playing and when it does, it becomes a different aspect ratio (4:3 instead of the 16: 9 or 16:10 that it should be). Does anyone know why this happens and have a way to fix it? l know a simple solution would be to use the YouTube application or the YouTube mobile site, but I prefer the quality options of the desktop site.

Are you talking about the issue where YouTube is all grayscale, and has about 4 different horizontal strips, only the top of which is the correct(ish) video?
If so, I heard that's the gapps package issue. Uninstall and reinstall from the market.
A temp fix is to change the video quality, and then restart video from the beginning. It fixes it for that single video. I'm a tad lazy and haven't tried the above fix, but I will right now!
As for the others, not sure!
