YouTube issues? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my Maxx HD last night and loving it so far. But I ran into an odd issue last night, I couldn't play anything from the YouTube app. I was on wifi and the stream just wouldn't start playing. I was able to push YouTube video through DLNA with iMediaShare, but the YouTube app didn't work at all.
Been getting more FC than I think I should too. Not sure if I installed something it doesn't like or what.
Edit: YouTube seems to be working fine on 4G at work, I'll have to try it on wifi again when I get home. I got to thinking about it and both Netflix and Hulu didn't want to work first time I tried them on wifi at home. Maybe the cheap router I'm using as a range extender in the living room is the problem.

Bump. Anyone else experiencing these issues? I'm also having problems with youtube. Mine will play on wifi but it takes forever to load the video and will buffer constantly while watching. It seems like I can only watch about 15-30 seconds before it has to pause and load some more.

I have the same issue too sometimes it works my major problem is trying to lunch a YouTube video from a website like DroidLife it won't play.

I watch probably 20 minutes of YouTube per day on Wifi before going to bed. I haven't experienced any issues so far with the MAXX HD. I do know that the 720p phones take a bit longer to buffer than the older phones as its loading higher res video.

I'm on the maxx hd as well but sometimes its just like watch 30 seconds of video, pauses to load for about another 30 seconds, play 10 seconds of video and that process just repeats itself.

I get the long buffer times and rebuffering on wifi, but not on 4G. Speed tests say my home wifi is faster than my 4G (and it should be generally with the 4G I get at home). If that's the case I'm not sure why it would do better on 4G than wifi. I'm gonna blame Verizon. *shakes fist at sky in righteous indignation*

Bumping this thread now that there are some roms out for this phone. This is still insanely frustrating. Play 5 seconds of video > Buffer for 15-30 seconds > play 5 seconds of video. Terrible. Anyone else have issues or better luck on other roms? I have yet to root the phone and remove the crapware.

I have to say I have the same issue. On HD, constant buffering making watching very frustrating. 4g fixes this. Home Wi-Fi is over 8mbps down. Oddly, my home pc was buffering on YouTube today as well. Speed test shows plenty of speed. Is this possibly on YouTube's end? Maybe it doesn't like my ISP...

No problems here on Verizon. Have you tried a speed test or factory resetting your device

Update: I cleared my cache partition and that seemed to help. Didn't realize you can do it while stock. Looks like I'll be doing that monthly.

Pandora Unstable

Anyone else having issues with pandora freezing/crashing constantly?
Sent from my EVO
Works perfectly fine for me, since I've gotten the phone and on every firmware i've used since then and since rooting.
What instances does it crash? Are you running a stock evo?
I have also had a problem with it crashing/freezing a few times. Not doing anything out of the ordinary and it just happens. Most of the time it will be running by itself. Doesnt happen enough to me for me to take the time to fix it.
Pandora seems to be stable on mine... Ran it for about six hours yesterday

stable for me as well i use it for all my music listening
Mine has been stable since they updated it a week ago or so. But it still seems to crash/freeze every once in a while, but only when its lost data and comes back.

Pandora runs excelent!
mine crashes my phone if its not charging while its playing....
It seems to happen with low signal (either Wifi or cell). Otherwise its stable and functional. FWIW, Slacker Radio does a similar thing. Slacker is less stable than Pandora for me.

Same issue I'm having, sometiems the screen will go black and android will ask me if I want to force it to close. Others it will jsut stop responding and I can't do anything.
I don't think Pandora crashed on me even once on my iPhone.
I've also noticed that Pandora goes crazy in the background trying to stream stuff even if it's been paused for a long period of time.
Load up alogcat and see.

It may be causing some really bad battery drain because of it's inability to background properly.
If the connection is bad for any reason whatsoever it tends to give issues.
Pandora in general seems to be a memory hog.
If you want another (free) app, try Slacker.
Let me put it this way, I have a premium Pandora account and I still use Slacker on my Evo.
I don't like (what I saw) of Slacker on their website, but the mobile app is awesome.
Also, if you don't mind paying Grooveshark looks to be very good.
Only problem is it's for paying customers, which I am considering trying out - it looks that good!
runs fine use it just bout all day every day
yeah, pandora and slacker on android are not as stable as they are on the iphone

Same problem, I was in a non 3g/4g area, so it was regular tower bandwidth. I think it happens a lot when you have very low signal.

What do we need 4G for yet?

Now don’t laugh... It’s a valid question. I am all about speed. I have a 6 core CPU in my PC that is totally useless but makes me feel good. I get that.
But I honestly don’t see what I need faster network speeds on my phone for... Everything I do is fast. I am never like... "Come on load!!" on my phone... So why would I sacrifice battery life for internet speed I don’t use or need?
I understand if you are using your phone as a wireless hotspot you would want that speed. But what else? Can you guys even suggest things I could try on my phone that would make me want faster speeds? We don’t have Netflix yet but maybe that is one. But movies can buffer and from what I understand they will play smooth on 3G with no problems.
So what is it? You just want the speed because it’s there? Again if that’s it I get that!
But what are actually apps or usages that you can experience a difference. Because right now nothing I do seems to have a speed issue on 3G.
Let me follow that long winded post up with something straight to the point…
Seems like 99.9% of what I do on my phone is power critical (meaning I want to be able to do all of it as long as I can without charging) and not internet speed critical at all. So why would I ever turn 4G on?
Wow those facebook pics loaded in .2 seconds instead of .8 seconds. Good thing even though I’m only going to be able to browse facebook for 2.5 hours instead of 8 to get that difference!
I am also interested to see in what people can make up.

Well I live in the middle of no where and can't get good internet so I will be using 4G LTE to tether as soon as the towers are put up which should be soon since it's announced.
That's cool and is a valid reason. But will still be a total pain in the ass. You will soon just want a 4G usb aircard or seperate MIFI device... Trying to use your phone as your sole internet connection sucks.

I'd like to try to use 4G as much as I can because I am using the TB as a videophone so I can talk with my Deaf clients and also be able to access sign language interpreters while placing phone calls to hard of hearing clients and hearing vendors. The minimum requirement I found for smooth video and audio seems to be two signal bars in 3G. 4G or at least two WiFi "waves" is preferred.
re
Tethering with 4g is awesome when you cant get on wifi.
Video playback on 4g is fast and you can also watch higher quality videos.
Downloading apps and whatnot is lightning fast.
I have had pda type phones for the last 8 years, the thunder bolt speed is awesome.
That being said..
Dont be a moron and leave the 4g on if you dont care about 4g speeds. Save your fricking battery and turn 4g off.
Latency seems better overall on LTE versus the normal 3G CDMA, which means something if you care about how fast you get your data from the internet.
On an unrelated note, I would love to have a 6 core cpu, so I could use the extra cores for virtual machines or compiling and the rest for normal stuff, so there are indeed uses for things that seems "useless."
re
I just had a lol moment..
I thought i might try and run vm server and load up 2008 server and a vm client machine.
FYI dont do what i did.. Load it up on a laptop with only 4gb of ram and a slow 5400rpm hard drive.
Just in case everyone forgot. Come may 15th wireless tether will be a payer and tiered feature. When your using 4g on your computer you will use that up real quick. Unless you use wireless tether for root users but that is becoming somewhat of a risk nowadays since Verizon isn't raking in enough money yet.

Hulu. Watching all youtube vids in HD. Open up future video streaming apps. Online multiplayer games. It's not just a speed increase but you will also get voice and data the same time. I don't have a desktop computer at home so I do all my computer needs on my cellular. 85% of the things I do on my phone is data related. Also if you think about it whenever verizon gets all the bugs out on there 4G network it could save on battery life. Now hear me out I think the lesser time your downloading or uploading the less strain it will be on your battery. As opposed to same processing but slower speeds meaning more time consuming battery (longer download and upload time) because that's what is really killing the battery is battery consumption via data. Idk just thinking.
Same as above
I watch YouTube vids in high quality mode all the time. Virtually impossible without 4g.
Also Google maps loads way quick... Which is the one thing I hate waiting on.

(i took the picture while it was transitioning to another scene...)
Not to be a jerk or anything but I watch YouTube videos in HD on 3g. I get 2.5kb down and can watch entire videos without a hitch.
Although an entire hulu video may be a different story. I am able to watch entire hockey games in high quality with the nhl app.

I can do hq youtube on 3g with no problems. I love the 4g when I am using the slingbox though. I could never put it in hq over 3g so that is nice. I also download all my cds right from my phone so its nice to have them in 2 min instead of 20.
Also streaming music from the amazon cloud is much nicer on 4g

Same. With how the phone is built you can talk and surf in 3g or 4g on this phone. Its one of the TB's major plusses.
It's probably just me, but I find it funny that you guys all can do things immediately on 3g, I find major waiting times. Even in the best signal places where I get 1-2mbps down I still have to wait 5-20 seconds for my droid 2 global to load a page, it is a pain.
For example, right now I am in my dorm in Burlington, VT, my phone has a signal between -68 and 70dbm at 0 asu, and the current speedtest.net app shows .65-.7mbps down and .63-.65 up. Not great speeds, but within what 3g is supposed to be, and if I want to watch a high quality youtube video, I go to the youtube app, count that it takes 14 seconds to load, I am doing this right now. Click the new ray william johnson video, and it takes 24 seconds to start, then 1:02 into the video it freezes for 43 more seconds. At this point I deem 3g unuseable for youtube videos. When I am getting super awesome over 1mbps speeds then I usually only wait 5-10 seconds and it doesn't freeze, usually, but still 3g can very often and for a large number of people be slow. Similarly web pages take a while to load too, I mean sure if I load the mobile version of a webpage it is fairly fast, 4-5 second waits usually, but for those sites without mobile pages or where mobile pages are too limiting, it can take forever to load, I constantly have to look away from my phone for 20 or more seconds then look back to still see it loading. I imagine 4g would run at a minimum of 3mbps even if it was way way over used and signal was bad, so for me that is why 4g makes sense.
Also the thunderbolt is the first 4g lte phone for verizon, clearly there are still issues to work out and battery useage can be made significantly better, I don't see the current power use of 4g as an indicator of power use a year or 2 down the line.

I asked this same question once and got ridiculed for it. I think perhaps in the future we'll need more speed on our cell network but right now I get all the speed I need off of wifi at work or home. I would love to see some innovations in faster processors without compromising any battery life. Or I'd love to see them develop better batteries. I like 4G but I hope we see faster phones with better batteries before anyone even mentions 5G.

[Q] Video Camera Lag?

Does anyone else have this problem? When I take video with my NS occasionally the recording ends up with out of sync audio and video, with the video pausing for a few seconds while the audio continues - the video then continues and finishes after the audio has finished. This happens when played but players both on my phone and on my pc. Any thoughts? The laggy video capture always seems to occur when I'm capturing moments with friends and family too and not when I try to reproduce the results haha...typical eh
Im facing the same problem too.
I m running on the stock rom, 2.3.4, rooted. I had this issue for twice & then i did a factory reset & hope it helps. But today when i record the video again, the same problem occurs again.
I don't know what to do. i googled abit & saw someone said clearing the camera app data would help, but seems.. it doesn't work for me.
anyone can help us? please?
Same issue since December. I have yet to find a good solution. It's a bummer as it does ruin what is otherwise acceptable video.

Nice to know I'm not alone and that a developer is having the same issue as a relative noob like me! Any ideas what on earth could be causing it? It didn't do it when I was first using the phone, and now my phone storage is relatively full - perhaps lag in writing to the phones storage is causing it? Sorry for the late response, just it happened again last night to one of my videos and really irritates me!
...any solutions for this issue??

[Q] Does your music stutter?

I am about at my wits end and ready to sell this thing because my music stutters sometimes when multitasking. It happens most often when using the browser (open new tab, clink a link in an app that sends me to the browser, etc) but also occasionally happens just switching applications.
This happens when using the stock player with my own local .mp3 files as well as when streaming using either Pandora or Spotify.
I feel like I'm back in the days of my old Pentium I / Win 95 machine and I just don't think this should be happening.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Any tips on what to try? My next things to try are factory refresh and also a different music player (although I don't this will have any effect). I also have thought about getting an app from the market that will tell me cpu usage.
This is a WiFi only xoom, still stock, but soon to be rooted if I decide to actually keep it. I've had it for I guess 2 weeks and the audio stutter is one of the first things I noticed and is actually a big deal breaker for me since the main reason I bought the thing was so I could listen to music, watch movies, and browse the web. I'm just not sure if I got a lemon or not. It otherwise seems fine.
Factory reset should do it. Everybody says back up your apps but I never do. I like to go on the search for apps anyways
I get this as well. Bit annoying. Hope ics fixes it.

Droooooiiid.. the sound forever in our hearts and nightmares <3
same problem here. Since the very first day. I really hate it and every update I was hopeful that it will be fixed. Well, ICS is my next big hope...as long as it is a software issue
If it really bothers you that bad use a diff player from the market. When I use one it no longer stutters.. but i m a fan of the stock player otherwise

Happens to me with the default music but not Slacker or Pandora. Hmm...
Thanks for the replies. I guess I will have to try a factory reset. I'm using power amp player and still have the problem just like with the stock app. Power amp has an option to move to a larger buffer, which I'm hoping will help, at least for my local files. If not, factory reset is next.
Seems like a device with these hardware specs shouldn't have this issue though.
I think its not the hardware more the fact that honeycomb is a bodge job just to get into the tablet market.

OK, I now have used Set DNS and set my wifi to Google DNS and get much faster downloads and that seems to have really helped with this music stuttering issue while browsing. I used both the updated PowerAMP app playing mp3s from my micro sdcard, and also streamed music using Rhapsody and no stuttering, no effect whatever, as I surfed. I don't know if this will help you, but it seems to have solved this problem for me.
Thanks I may try to give that a try. I don't really know how to do any of that, but I'm sure I can figure it out with google.
The $600 tablet that can't play music and browse comment is exactly why I have a dilemma. I wooted the xoom so I would have to sell it at whatever loss plus spend the extra $250 over what I paid for the xoom to get an iPad 2 of the same capacity of 32 GB. Even the 16 GB iPad 2 is still $150 more. Not that money is the issue, I'll spend the extra if I deem it worth it, but I just feel like the tablet market is changing quickly enough that who knows in 6 months to a year I'll probably want to get a different one any way, no matter whether I have a xoom or an ipad 2 right now. I really have grown to like the xoom and don't want to get rid of it over basically this one issue, and it's not like I can't get around the music stuttering issue by using my ipod or phone. I guess it's just that I feel I shouldn't *have* to do that.

The Xoom is really an awesome device and I think it will actually get better with a bit more time. Its problems basically are related to software and there are some solutions now and more coming. The DNS thing is something I hadn't bothered with but I saw something about that app (ugliest icon ever) in Android Police so I checked it out--very easy to set either Google DNS or Open DNS or another, depending on what works for you. I think the app requires root, but you can probably find a way to change it if you're not. I recommend rooting anyway, for a smoother and richer user-controlled experience.
Thought I would just revive this thread and say that I'm really glad I held on to my XOOM because I've been running some of the ICS builds and haven't had any music stutters. I had one moment of music "crash" where the music makes an awful buzz sound for a moment, which is because of using the equalizer built into the music player on ICS. I've had it multiple times on my GNex and it is already widely noted that equalizer may cause music to do this. But as of yet, fingers crossed, I haven't had a single stutters on music when multitasking. It would happen most often upon clicking links in a program that would then open the browser. I haven't done a ton of testing, but have listened to music for a good 4 hours now on my XOOM with EOS ICS while surfing and installing apps and what not and haven't had any stuttering.
In general ICS has made this tablet 10x more awesome than it was to start for me. It was a bit of a disappointment at first, has grown on me with time as I accepted it's shortcomings, but now with ICS is a tablet I'm excited and proud to own. Can't wait for official ICS and more ICS roms.

Wifi issues

Hey everyone.
I've had the phone for less than a day and I've fallen in love with this device. Everything runs fine except for the Wifi. The signal will be fine for a couple of minutes, then dramatically drop and I'll lose my connection. This issue makes streaming YouTube videos impossible. Anyone else having these issues?

This isn't the case with me. I used my phone continuously on WiFi for about 2 hours this morning with any issues. I'm connected to a Wireless-N 5.4GHz network, so there shouldn't be any problems here (my friends' phones won't work on the 5.4GHz network).
Try going to a Starbucks or something and testing their WiFi there and see if you have the same issues.

I have the same problem, but i have 3 routers in the house i can connect too, 2 are 2.4ghz, the third has both 2.4 and 5ghz and i find that i get a stable connection to the 5ghz.. if i let wifi be on 2.4/5 auto then i find the signal drops all thetime, if i lock it to a spectrum it seems to stabilize although it occaisionally drops out.
I'm noticing some wifi issues as well. It seems to jump up and down. Also speed tests are quite slow compared to my other devices that are connected to the network. For example, on my ipad i get 20mbps on a speed test and the htc one x only gets about 8 mbps.
Got mine on release, no problems so far.
Like Dan said, try connecting to another network and report back.
