Hard Brick Prevention and developing UnBrickable SD - Galaxy Camera Android Development

Some general rules:
It is not recommended to flash bootloaders on your device unless necessary. When flashing bootloaders, make sure the model number matches the device you are flashing. Also, always use a new cable without any wiggle room or cable damage.
To get into download mode to use Odin or Heimdall:
Remove and replace battery.
hold Volume Down & Home then press power while continuing to hold power.
You can now use Odin or Heimdall to flash a stock ROM package.
The Fix for Hard Bricks:
In the event that you cannot get to download mode, please contact me. I am developing a boot-from-sdcard fix for bricked Galaxy Cameras based on the methods used in i9300 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34139922. The hardware mod must be located to boot Odin Mode (Loke Daemon) the SDCard. JTAG will not work on Exynos 4412 devices.

Why will JTAG not work on Exynos 4412? Also, if i wanted to view UART output from the GT-I9300, is all i need a linux box with a cable like this?
--UPDATE: looks like you did a video for the Captivate on your UART jig. Taking a look now for resistor values regarding the GS3, perhaps an oscilloscope would help here?

There is no UART output on USB on this device. Also Exynos4412 JTAG is usually disabled except for the Nexus10.

Bummer, I just saw that it looks like you had to interface directly to 2 board pins on the Galaxy Camera to get UART i imagine it will be similar on the GS3.

Touch screen not responding
hi, i am not sure if its the right place to post or not. i tried to root my camera with galaxy s3's kernel(using sgs3 toolkit) and after flashing the kernel nothing happen but my cameras screen stop responding. i tried to flash default frimware via odin but touch screen isnt working.

Why would you do that when Adam gave us a specific root method for our GCams? You should probably post this in general section. I sure hope someone can help you out. It would be a bummer if you lost your camera
Good Luck.

I have a bricked GC100. efs screwed up. boot loops. boots in recover, boots in download mode flashes all available stock firmware, doesn't boot normally. tried booting up after flashing, factory settings after flashing. Any hope for this device?

. Did you do a factory reset/wipe data?

Yeah... installed stock recover, didn't work, tried with CWR, didn't work... went through all available post, nothing helped... boot animation shows, samsung logo shows then again boot animation...

Finally got it fixed. As GC100 is similar to S3, downloaded efs file for S3 flashed it via odin through bootloader and voila... attaching the file for reference if anyone else gets into trouble!

Shouldn't I be awarded king of all screw ups!? Tried to flash a Rom for S3. No problem with few tweaks, didn't work however, flashed stock gc100 now touch screen not working. factory reset with stock recovery, cwm recovery still touch not responding... flashed 3 parts stock rom + efs, flashed 3 part stock without efs, flashed 4 stock roms 1 package, still touch not working...

It's closer to an s4 than s3 but if you wanted a galaxy cam phone, they already make the s4 zoom.
http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxycamera/mobile/galaxys4/index.html

I don't want a phone and I'm aware of S4 zoom. Its just that I can't sit and do "nothing". Well that's why i keep playing around (and always get into trouble ) Well getting the touch replaced as that's the only way. logcat says -1v for touch which means I've fried the touch digitizer. hahah (Still in warranty, unrooted and resetted the counter with triangle away)

Definitely wasn't talking about hardware specs just the software.
Either way, it would be better to compile a build using the phone as a base and making the necessary changes than attempting a direct port.

AOSP is what Samsung starts with, so it is always possible to do the basics. CM would probably break it, though. That seems to happen a lot

[GUIDE] USB jig - resetting the download counter - DM Protocol Version 2.0

Since USB jig doesn't work exactly the same way on our SGR compared to SGS II, I recommend an alternative solution.
How to make jig work?
1) Entering the Download mode:
pull the battery out -> plug jig -> insert the battery
or
turn off device -> plug jig -> press power button
2) Resetting the download counter:
Enter DM using one of those two methods above. Once you're there just remove jig, plug usb-cable and install your stock kernel (just to reset the counter) or firmware (in case you want to reset the counter and unroot simultaneously). Right after installation process is started you should see the green text: Success to erasing the record of custom OS! (You can see it on attached picture.)
Remember:
1) This method works only on DM Protocol Version 2.0, for those of you that have v. 2.1 USB jig won't work at all. In your case procedure is more complex, please visit this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528256
2)You don't have to flash the whole fw-package to reset the counter. It's ok with just stock kernel (only the .tar file though and remember that replacing the kernel WON'T UNROOT your device. To unroot and clear the counter you should reinstall your stock firmware!)
I attached some stock kernels. Please don't ask me to add more. First of all I don't have them and second... you can easily get your own by replacing boot.img from one of the tar-packages below with the original one from your preferred firmware. (USE Total Commander, don't extract packages, simply open them with [ENTER] and copy file from one package to another (F5))
I am trying the second method (insert jig and press power botton), not working. After flashing custom ROM (kernel), it simply reboots as expected (should I disable reboot option in ODIN?).
Would appreciate if someone suggests how to do it right.
Excuse me, but can you write step by step what you did. You cannot enter Download Mode? Or you entered DM and flashed FW but it didn't reset your counter?
Make sure that USB-debugging is checked.
1)enter DM with USB jig
2)remove jig
3)plug usb cable and flash STOCK firmware
It has always worked for me that way.
(Maybe I misunderstood you but...why should you disable auto-reboot option in Odin. Flashing custom kernels increases counter and it has nothing to do with the method I posted above. IT's actually totally opposite. This method is only useful if you just want to erase flashing record, but it won't let you have insecure kernel and 0 on counter.)

I put USB jig in, pressed power button, phone went to download mode.
Tried uploading custom kernel, it wasn't doing the trick. However as you suggested, installing stock ROM worked! But thats quite weird as in SGS2 it works just by inserting the jig.
I agree it's weird
Hello.
I don't want to be off topic but, I would like to ask you when you flashed 2.3.6 from 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 , did your download counter increase?
Of course not it never increases when you flash stock firmware. Only if you flash custom software (with the exception of custom recovery like cwm) via Odin e.g. insecure kernels, custom roms etc.
Sent from my GT-I9103 using XDA App
hey kochan could you shed the goodie on where you get the stock 2.3.4 rom? i tried legion's stock KK5 without getting the magic green words on my screen after the the install kicked start... *frustrated*
I'm flashed 2.3.6 and this tutorial works just fine.
I did the same two days ago with 2.3.6, and everything worked as it was supposed to again. So you must check the jig.
okay.. i got a new jig from the guy, USB debugging checked, tried both methods with ZSKK5 on PDA flashed without luck... argh this is pissing me off what have I done wrong!!!
s4sixty, kochan, did you both flash the stock rom off a custom rom to clear the counter? i have tried dozens time from stock to stock. the only thing i suspect that went wrong was when i enter download mode after jigged, i m always coming from stock-to-stock flash. would that be the case?
guess i m luck out. i m trying different cable to see whether things get better... argh
Tell me: how many custom flashings do you actually have on the counter? What's the number?
i got three bro... would that be the case that i m flash-jigging from a stock to stock rom that's why i m luck out? i m trying different cable.
Ok, number is actually out of relevance (if it's different than 0). Maybe it has something to do with the cable. I thought that flashing FW rewrites bootloader (because it's inside the .tar package). So it shouldn't have major significance here since u used both 2.3.4 and 2.3.6.
You know the only thing that has to be done to succeed is to boot into Download Mode with the help of USB jig (NOT WITH 3buttons combination), then remove jig (DO NOT RESTART) and plug in usb cable directly, then just chose your firmware and press start in Odin. (I always close Kies and all processes related to it before I started any operation in Odin) It has always worked on my device. I have no idea why it doesn't work for you.

It doesn't matter dude when custom roms are installed via CWM and not Odin. I have almost always reflashed from stock to stock. But maybe...I'm not sure but it doesn't harm to start....try to flash stock again, then flash custom kernel, and then turn off mobile, insert usb jig, press and hold power button, u should boot directly into DM, then remove jig -> plug usb cable and ref lash directly. If this doesn't work, then try to find somebody with galaxy R and try the methods i posted on other handset just to make sure if it's hw-related.
yea im totally beat from jigging my SGR these couple days. ah well i guess it is time to fall to the dark side and tune the phone to a no-beater! thanks for the coaching kochan

Hi m.kochan10, can I know more about using the USB jig?
As you mentioned, after booting up using the jig, I need to unplug it and then plugin my USB cable to flash stock ROM thru Odin3. By means of stock ROM, you mean only the factoryfs.img? or the whole things including boot.img, cache.img, factoryfs.img, hidden.img, modem.bin & recovery.img?
Thanks a lot

Ardatdat I'm sorry but in order to reset the counter I have always flashed the whole tar-package that included all those parts you mentioned.
Though...it's worth to test since counter gets erased immediately after installation process is started, so perhaps it can be concluded that...the first part that is being installed is responsible for resetting the number of custom flashings.
I'll try to test it today.
EDIT: IT's boot.img that makes a difference So Ardatdat...take your old .tar file and simply replace your kernel with the stock one, run Odin3 and voila No need to flash the whole FW!
I am thinking of getting an USB Jig and keeping it, just in case (rather than ordering one when needed and waiting for it, till I get it ).
I went through the FAQ's for USB Jigs in this forum. I got an SGR, and from that FAQ what USB Jig is shouldnt be specific for SGS II or SGR. Can you please confirm this before I get one as there were only couple of sellers with I9103 mentioned and most of them had mentioned I9100 specifically.
Thanks.
USB Jig is the same for every samsung device! Just the way it works, differs. On SGS it boots into download mode, removes the triangle and resets the counter right after you inserted it to your phone. On SGR it does each of those things above but not equally automatically. It works and it works effectively, but we have to insert jig, press power button and fe. reflash the stock kernel to get the same effect. No need to worry.
PS. It's so cheap so don't hesitate to buy it!

[Q] Reason: No Kernal (Odin 3 downloading mode)

Today my Samsung galaxy R i9103 turned into brick..
My phone have been rooted following this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406880 for 5 months and worked well until today
I can't turn on my phone trying all the methods..like taking off the battery and putting it on, removing my SIM and microSD card, pressing volume-+home button+power button...
But the notebook recognizes it as APX when I plug it in
Later, I installed something like a NVIDIA driver
I have found a .bat on other forum, run it and can get into odin 3 download mode now
Under the title(Odin 3 download mode protocol v2), it writes
Reason: No Kernal
Check Signature: Check
Custom Binary Download: No (0 Counts)
Current Binary: Samsung Official
Waitting USB Cable...
and I don't have any other options even rebooting my phone as it just shows me the same page.
1. With this situation, can I simply flash the original ROM using Odin? (someone said it is likely to be a hardware problem but not a software one)
2. Will Samsung know that my phone is rooted and refuse to fix it if I sent it to them ?
3. If yes, will flashing to the original ROM before sending it to them work?
4. Is there any way that I can fix the phone without losing my data inside?
Thanks so much!!!
Your counter is '0' so I think Samsung shouldn't be able to tell you that it was rooted but if they as a policy don't accept handsets in APX mode then we can't be sure about what would be their response.
But did you try your luck with the following method ?

Just the same thing as what I have used
Do you know will I still have my data inside after I flash the original rom again?
And what about the counter, will it increase?
Anyway, thanks
1.Yes. You can Flash a stock ROM in the download mode.
2. If you flash a stock ROM, your download counter will not increase and Samsung will not know you played around with your device.
If you flash some insecure kernel (modified ROMs) via ODIN then counter will increase.
3. You dont have to flash if wanna send them to repair. You are very safe to send it to repair as it is.
4.What ROM version were u on before? Determine that first and try to flash the the boot kernel and see whether u can make it work?
If no luck you can flash a full ROM. You SDcard/usbstorage files will not be deleted. Only the system partition is going to be modified.

I flashed the stock ROM with re-partition and need to wipe all my data to get it working...
if not, it will stuck in a rebooting loop
Do you think it is likely to be caused by rooting?
Or it's a bug which will bring down the whole system?

[Q] Can I root a n8010 stuck in odin bootloop (tried everything else )

Hi all..or anyone out there
I have had the seemingly strange bootloop problem on my stock note N8010...which stuck on the dreaded "samsung galaxy note 10.1" and only has odin feature working. (and no factory reset options because I think the poor old tab is crammed to bursting with apps, files and cache and so had a meltdown) poor thing.
so anyway I check these sites of techie wonder and wisdom and followed every logical option..starting with the simple ones
first ran power down and tried to boot up (x3) with no joy, then take apart the tablet to disconnect / reconnect the battery and boot up (x3) still no change.
So went and got the firmware from samwares (both jelly bean and kitkat) to then flash through odin....tried and failed first because of dodgy cable, but the then got a new one...and joy of joys (at first) odin recognised my tab and the firmware flashed across with pass..but then auto rebooted straight back into the dreaded samsung 10.1 again....so tried different versions of odins... and tried other global n8010 firmware...but funnily and frustratingly then all fully download and pass in odin (and the andoid logo and green download status bar on the tablet seems to shown that downloading is and has fully taken place.... but the darn thing still wont boot up past the samsung galaxy note 10.1
Sadly coming to the ends of my tether (of so many nearly there false hopes, high and lows) and very little cash to send it to the Sami tech bods doesnt help matter....I then read and tried the (supposed) last resort pit file/firmware option...first with kitkat (as apparently that worked for someone somewhere) and then tried with jelly bean..again each time itAlways passes in odin.... but auto reboots into the dreaded bootloop logo .... to haunt and torment me.. Aaaaagh!!!!.....I would not mind if it said action failed (for once) like some others seem to experiencet...but it always passes in ODIN????
So.....have come to the semi ignorant conclusion it is either the bootloader section of the tablet or the original software that is messed up or some internal hardware component has a fault.
but was wondering if there is anthing left to try...or would it potentially be possible or worth trying to root a tablet in this condition?
As although I have not ventured into the wild worlds of rooting.....I am now pretty confident of messing with this tablets mind..and have little to lose...so any further ideas and help would be great.
Exact same here. Never flashed, totally stock N8010. My wife hadn't used it for a couple of weeks. So she grabs it again and it was off. booted to nothing but the boot logo. Nothing worked except Download mode.
Flashing stock roms has Odin reporting success, but it still won't boot up. Trying re-Partition does give a fail as soon as I press start.
And we aren't alone. It appears there are quite a few of these cases. I have no idea how to solve this.
I have done a bit of rom flashing on my old galaxy S (the first one) and bootloaders and such usually were included in a ROM. Rooting was done with Recovery or an app and I think it was also possible with adb, IIRC (it's been a while).
It's my wife's Note and she's starting to scope out mini iPads...
Same problem with GT-N8010
I am also having the same problem.
I tried to upload a new ROM via ODIN. All was successful from the ODIN app (PASSED). but stuck on the boot screen. Power and Vol up does not work (it appears to but then crashes out to the boot screen again) so no way to do a hard factory reset.
Volume down/power does work and allows you to get to Odin mode. but as above, uploading a new ROM does not seem to work.
This is an un-rooted GT-N8010 with the stock ROM when I purchased it back in 2013 I believe.
Come on guys, give us some ideas.
Thanks
Gene
Sounds like wrong model firmware flashed as that's the usual bootloop problem .
Try Odin firmware flash wait to passed then remove battery for a short while and replace and try recovery mode .
In my case there is no incompatible firmware issue... The tablet just stopped working one morning and that was that.
Can't comment on the other posters though.

My wife's the same. Never done anything to it. No idea how to remove the battery. I let the battery run down once, then recharged it, made no difference.
That was before trying to flash the new firmware. My Note says N8010 on the back, it says so in the download mode. I got a firmware from SamMobile for the N8010. Don't know what else I can do.

[Q][HELP] Very bricked, please help

I have a GT-P1500, and I flashed a ROM .zip to /system with heimdall before I really grasped how flashing these kinds of things on samsung devices really works. Now everything is terrible.
I can boot into download mode and heimdall and odin both recognize my device. When I flash a recovery, I'm not able to boot into it even when I do the right key combinations and it says "booting recovery" in blue text in the corner on the samsung logo screen. Also, for some reason my download screen says "qualcomm secureboot: enabled" at the bottom of the other stuff. This is normal, right?
I've tried flashing the .tar.md5 firmware files from sammobile, but odin fails to flash them. I've tried kies, but it doesn't recognize my device. I've tried different computers. I've tried different recovery builds. I've tried everything I can think of.
Please help?

No problem my friend, but I just saw you mentioned p1500 and this p5100 thread. Sorry, i missed that too.

Your problems will be sorted out there better than here.
Although I don't see any help or advice in your case. Since I am pretty sure you are on a carrier locked bootloader, sorry to be the one to break this on you which means you can't go custom and the carrier company is the real owner who doesn't want you to leave them.
Ah, 1500 was a typo. I meant 5100
Also, I can't do anything to the bootloader to fix this? Not even go back to stock?

There must be something, you got me mixed up with P1500 . well, lets put few confusions to rest
what else do you have, I will need more details
Are you using a carrier locked tab 2 p5100?
or did you flash a carrier locked firmware on your unlocked tab?
you mentioned you flashed a rom zip from heimdall. which one exactly?
is your device booting up or you are just stuck in download mode?
The tablet boots, but the screen is just black and I can only try rebooting it. I can boot into download mode by holding power and volume down.
I do not have a carrier locked version, and I have not flashed any firmware packages as something eventually goes wrong and heimdall or odin stops there.
The device was booting into stock properly before I flashed the ROM incorrectly. I flashed the 5100 version of the ROM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-2/10-inch-development/rom-cyanogenmod-13-cm13-0-t3303800

Update your bootloader to jelly bean. Flash from odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2642005
Refer to this. Will work, no need to worry.
Sorry for replying so late, I have been really busy lately.
I am unable to update my bootloader: odin either outright fails or hangs on SetupConnection forever. After weeks of recearch and attempts, I see no answer. I guess I really am bricked forever? Damn.

[Q] need help to troubleshoot & repair this p5100

Hello
I have the pleasure of trying to help a friend with her tablet, the samsung tab 2 10.1 - gt-p5100 .
The main thing working is the on button , which will boot but only to "samsung tab2 10.1" screen and then black /turn off.
Also I can get it to boot to ODIN mode by holding VOL DWN + power,
after proceeding to Continue with VOL UP , I get the "downloading "
and the screen also tells me
ODIN MODE
Product name GT-P5100
Custom binary download: none
Current binary: Samsung_official.
Odin mode can be turned off by holding the power button for a long while.
The tablet has no functions towards VOL UP + Power which should trigger factory / recovery setting. They do no exist on this device for what ever weird reason.
If plugged in with turned of screen the screen reveals a frozen (not spinning) thinking symbol like an asterix * , the one that would turn into a battery icon should this device boot correctly. But the battery icon never shows up, only the "frozen thinking icon"
Since I have a similar device, the first tab 10.1 called gt-P7500 , some of the components are the same.
So I have trouble shooted already these steps:
Opened device , unplugged battery, waited X minutes, re-plugged. Nothing, same problems.
Opened device, replaced port cord for power cable (the I/O flat cable, is the same in the 7500), Nothing, same problems.
Opened device, replaced battery (also the same from the 7500) , Nothing, same problems.
Also a combo of the both , Nothing, same problems.
Also I reverse tested the flat cord in my own tablet , my tablet boots fine, so the cord is fine.
Also with the battery in my own tablet, my tablet boots fine, the battery looks healty and was almost full, I recharged it fully to 100 % on my own tablet before putting it back into the p5100.
I have also tried various plugs, cable, wall-chargers, car-chargers - originals and copies alike., 1amps, 2amps...from other devices, nothing
I still do no think the charging is the problem nor the battery it self, all these work on my 7500 tablet, but on the p5100 : Nothing, same problems.
Also.. I think if the tablet would have battery issues it would not power on at all and never ever get into ODIN mode, this screen can be on for hours on end.
I also downloaded to see which functions the Odin programme could help me out with, the tablet can connect to the ID:COM , no problem and find any given ROM on my HD.
Of course I also tested connecting the tablet to the PC with the original USB cable WITHOUT Odinmode, but it will trigger connected/not connected sounds and my windows 10 will say : could not identify usb etc etc , and the screen on the tablet will turn on with that "frozen thinking icon"
So..what else can I do beside ask my friend to use the darn thing as a Frisbee ??
How can I get a normal boot sequence going or regain access to recovery/factory settings ??
The device was never rooted, never repaired prior to this. The device is 4 years old, so no more warranty.

you can try flashing an official firmware without pit file, flash custom recovery and last with pit file. all details should be in the link with details, it's lengthy but should help
Ok so , the occurrences do not mean that the emmc bug has struck this tablet ??? So because it can boot to "downloader" it is still salvageable ?? Please tell me someone if this is the case :crying:
wow i hope so . I have no knowledge of the various innards so to speak, in which order the various bits and bobs are executed and therefor we could know... Meaning my hope now flashing stock/custom and so on and so forth.
What would be the indicators to the emmc bug ? It seems it is a wide spread field of errors , mostly signs of hard brick.
I have just used this P5100XXDNA1_P5100NEEDNA1_P5100XXDMG1_HOME.tar.md5 with ODIN 3.12.3 and it did nothing. The programme ran fine , it worked within minutes. But still boots the same way.
So now while writing my pc is dl'ing the 4Files Firmwares from tsar3000. Sadly I have a feeling it will still boot the same way , I will update once I have tried.

I did mentioned in my guide that if you can enter into download or recovery you can still save the device. but in case it didn't even recovered with the 4 files and pit and considering you tried all the stuffs you could even with the batteries. chances are the case is the faulty emmc card where it's not writing on the card anymore. suspect anything else?
playing Frisbee is a bad idea, you can keep it as a spare if your older device needs some replacement or you can get it repaired.
Hmm ok that does not leave me many options. It is the tablet of my friend, so I will return it to her.
Do you happen to know any sites that deal with the specifics of the hardware?? Meaning a website forum where I can ask these questions. I need to understand which part does what here and specifically which part is failing in this case if we are to throw any more time and money away on this piece. Cheers

Help me anyone ? I have not been able to find the exact problem like mine , described like I did ... Can someone direct me to a hardware forum where someone might know this emmc trouble, can identify it 100 % and tell me which part to exchange ? I am my friend's only help since there are no funds to buy a new tablet for her & her kid. I really hope someone can help guide me furtheron
ok thread is closed, i gave up on this device since I could find no other help and could do nothing else. She kept the charger for her phone and the device was sent to recycle.

philz touch is outdated. use latest common twrp from android-andis github site. you find it here http://andi34.github.io/recoveries_tab2.html .download the zip and install it with philz.
