DYI Qi Car Dock [ideas/thoughts/wish-list] - Nexus 4 Accessories

Having seen some super creative members do some amazing stuff to make one-off accessories I thought we could start a thread to share ideas on making a magnetic Qi car dock for the N4. Too bad the Palm Touchstone isn't comparable because you can get them cheap to disassemble and work to mod. I am thinking of doing so with a Nexus Orb or whatever LG calls it when it is released. These other pad type chargers would need magnets incorporated. Then there is the power supply to figure out.
If there is an existing option, please share. If you have a plan, help us brainstorm it and share it.

Yeah, its what i thought when they annouced the orb thing. I would love a charger that is like the orb, that i can just chuck my phone onto, no hassle, and the magnets just stick too it, and it charges.

Can't wait for this!

The roads I usually drive are a little bumpy, and having a SRA doesn't help with that, so I don't think I'd be comfortable putting my phone's fate in the hands of a couple of magnets.

Here is something I did a few years back with a Palm Pre & their Touchstone charger. http://forums.webosnation.com/webos...-mounting-charger-car-solution-its-alive.html
If the Orb is light enough, I bet the same could be done.

Would it be feaseable to use velcro on the back of a mat and stick it somewhere? I'm not sure if you'd be able to get a cigarette lighter plug for an existing mat. Probably too simple, but I don't know about modding equipment lol.

The orb might work if its in a center console tray where the phone is more so leaning against the orb rather than having the orb fulling support the weight of the phone.
This goes counter what most people want and expect out of a car dock though, its more like a car stand
I'd be more inclined to do it this way as a DIY solution as well since we won't known till we try it out sturdy it will be... And sliding down onto a rubber center tray wont do much in terms of harm to the phone

There are some advantages to using a Touchstone (or Wireless Orb)-like solution. Mats usually don't have magnets, and you need to align the thing, besides in a car it will move. So that's done. Also you can tilt the thing and use it with a car dock mount. I have a pretty cool one . The suction cup is big and a special sticky material that you can actually stick to the dashboard and it's extremely secure. I have had another Arkon mount and they don't disappoint with quality. They offer a lot of different design selections for mounts and docks (mix and match). I found the dock I bought the least intrusive/ugly (including other brands). But the mount is really amazing.
So I plan to do what the OP is planning. Only that I suspect the Wireless Orb will be too expensive, and so far for me all the other available Qi chargers are still very expensive, even compared to Powermat. So I'm waiting to see what comes out and if the prices go down.

take a rubber band and tie it to the orb.

dude. while driving today i imagined using my spare brodit clip like you did to somehow mount an "orb". how did you adress the the power conversion to 12v or did the touchstone have a car power adapter?

akron and brodit too have been my go-to solutions when oem car docks don't cut it.

I think this is a great idea and would love to have a wireless charger for my car. I was thinking of finding a way of modding one of these

to allow wireless charging and NFC to turn on Bluetooth and GPS, open GMusic and turning off WiFi. Don't know how easy it would be though.
Also, if you can only find mains powered chargers you could always check out something like this.
Lastly, multi-quote might be good for replying to multiple posts

EE here, well CE but its the same major at Purdue minus 2 classes. Okay when it comes to the wireless charging inductance Faradays law blah blah.. No one cares about that not even me really haha.
What you want to know is will it work in your car with a car charger, there is always a way whether it be running an inverter right off of the battery or from the Aux power source.
One factor is unknown right now, or at least I haven't looked enough.. What is the amperage draw of the charging station. Most phones charge off of 5V at 1 amp. Tablets usually 5V 2.1A and so on besides Sony Tablet S...
What I'm getting at is most chargers then charge at these voltages so if the orb needs 12V, 120V w.e. it may be anything other than 5V an inverter will have to be run, with the original AC adapter. Unless you can find a charger that charges at the correct voltages the original AC adapter plugged into the invertor will be your best idea for now.
Now onto the car mount idea, I also had one for my pre and my current touchstone modded Nexus ..
I am thinking of buying an energizer Qi station and finding a way to mount at an angle with some sort of lip on the bottom to stop a slide off, but may look terrible have to see and energizer station in person first..

I don't really care to mount my phone to use as a GPS or anything like that. That being said I will probably make some sort of holder thing to put in my cup holder to charge the phone when I am in my car. So now dumb question; the phone being in a vertical position should not affect the qi charging as long as it is close enough right? Once I have my phone and get around to it I will post pictures of it. I might be a few weeks though, got backordered.

So you have a Qi charger already? My question is how good is the magnetic pull with it? Also which one do you have? I want to try and mount the charger to my wall like I had my touchstone for my GN... But that had a good magnetic pull due to the touchstone and rare earth magnets

Desktop chargers (with case on)

Just ordered a Rearth case from here: http://goo.gl/V5ccu
Curious if anyone has this case (or a similar type that does not obstruct the top/bottom) and uses a microUSB desktop charger?
I know, I know, this phone supports wireless charging.... but some of us want to 1) charge as fast as possible and 2) have our phone upright on our desk while charging.
I heard that the N4 fits in the GSIII desktop chargers but I doubt they do with any type of case on. Anyone have recommendations for a "universal" or otherwise desktop charger that will work with this phone/case combo?
I have found one that looks to be promising, except it's Philips brand and is an alarm clock... but still, people are saying it's fairly universal and at least one of the reviews says they are using it with an otterbox case on their phone:
http://goo.gl/4g4jd
Any thoughts or recommendations for other ones that might work?

I'm afraid so... Although I'm pretty sure that you can find a universal Micro USB dock. I'd check Amazon or eBay.
I'm in the same boat; I'd love to get a desktop charger, but can't find anything. I picked up a cheap ($5) S3 dock on eBay, but the plug doesn't extend far enough to connect to my N4 and the base isn't wide enough to fully support it either. I came across this one, but it is fairly pricey and I'm not sure I want to be the first person to try it out...

I am in the same boat , I would like to get a couple of docks one for work desk and one for home desk, I have tried to buy that one but for some reason they don't ship from Australia to me in Canada, I have found it here in ebay http://www.ebay.ca/itm/KiDiGi-Unive...ries&hash=item337e43a54e&_uhb=1#ht_5273wt_775
I am concerned with stress on the USB port, other than that I would love to buy it, does anyone know if it can cause stress on the USB or or should it be OK ?
I'm tempted by the KiDiGi one. I have a similar one for my S2 and it's been working fine for me so far...unfortunately its for the S2 only and so won't work with anything else.
I have this model for my iphone and it worked very well with a case.
http://www.amazon.com/Konnet-KN-832...UTF8&qid=1355257145&sr=8-1&keywords=icrado+s3
The Galaxy S3, et. al. version should have the jack facing the correct way and work perfectly for the Nexus 4.
As an aside, I did have to modify my dock for my iphone with case, because the little jack holder they have on this dock is enveloped in a larger plastic covering to keep it attached to the dock. I simply sawed off the top portion that keeps it in place, and superglued.. it has been solid ever since, and the connector reaches all the way into my case to connect just fine.
i'm probably going to get one of these for my

From my OP:
"I know, I know, this phone supports wireless charging.... but some of us want to 1) charge as fast as possible and 2) have our phone upright on our desk while charging."
That's why. It's not just about charging... I like to use my phone as a clock/info station during the day, and having it upright allows me to do that. Now if they'd just make a vertical magnetic charging pad.....
I use the phillips fidelio as351 and it fits my phone with it's multitude of cases and even my N7. also makes for a portable speaker systsem as well as it runs on battery or AC adapter. Lot of places have this dock on clearance.
Seidio also makes one that works with cases.
http://www.seidioonline.com/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-desktop-charging-cradle-p/bd2-crdssx1.htm
The Seidio one looks cool...but the lack of a backing looks like its going to put a lot of pressure on the USB connector.
I was looking at wireless mats, but then if I decide to change my handset again next year I'll be back in the same position I am now.

Does anyone know of a good desktop dock that will work with the S5?
I have the Samsung dock that worked great with my S3 and S4 but the stupid USB port cover on the S5 gets in the way.

You can set the S5 on it and it will charge and be firmly in place because the charging pin is very high, but obvisouly, the charging port cover has to be flipped 180 degrees and i'm scared that i the long term it will break off. Thats why i switched back to just a regular cable

Yeah, the connector for that charger cover doesn't strike me as super durable.
I guess I could take a dremmel to the part of the dock on the left side of the charging pin and make some room for the port cover. It won't look great but at least I could probably have a workable dock and not be worrying about breaking that cover off.
Thanks!

If you're the type of person that thinks paying 50$ for a dock that is made for 1$, just because it's branded, is the way to go, then sure. But I had this since august and it's as solid as day 1, for under 10$, you can't go wrong. Heck, you can even buy 2 and experiment with a dremel if you want at that price

Sorry, I meant the charging cover on the phone isn't durable. That dock locks plenty solid. I was just thinking that I'd have to cut it up a little to alleviate the stress on the USB port cover.
Ahh, i see. I agree on one side, but on the other, i can't believe Samsung have not opened and closed that little cover thousands of times before slapping it on the S5. Samsung have good stress tests that tend to make our phones very durable. It would be a major screw up to put a fragile door on a phone that depends on that for its IP67 certification. Only time will tell, but I think i'll take out the dremel too and try to make the dock as S5 friendly as possible:fingers-crossed:

Yeah, I thought about that too -- the door doesn't look too durable but then I thought that it had to have been a requirement of the IP67 certification for it to be relatively sturdy. I owned the XPeria Z1 and the S5's door seems about as durable. Time will tell, I guess.
I'm kind of annoyed that they didn't consider charging pins, that would have opened up charging $50 for a new branded dock.
I'm going to source a replacement back and wire up the induction charge points to pads on the back, then build a dock for it.
It's kind of silly requiring you to open the usb protector every night to charge it. (And I hate wasting power on induction charging)

Someone needs to make a q wireless charging standing desktop dock.
Here's another dock. And I have yet to figure out how they are putting an S5 into a dock without ripping the USB cover off the phone first. That cover does NOT bend back enough for the phone to sit flush. So wth?!?!

I have had this one for a while and I like the fact that the plug for this is just the end of a usb cable locked into place. I have been able to reverse it when I had a phone that docked backwards and now I have put to USB3 cable that came with the phone right into it so I get the best it can do.

Car / Vehicle Qi Chargers

Hey guys and gals,
I am looking to purchase a Car Qi Charger. I have not yet found a thread for this, though there were options mentioned in the regular Qi Charger thread, but this one is specifically for the car.
I have found 2 which look promising but just want to know other peoples input. Plus want to know if they will hold with a case on the phone.
Itian: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M685JTG/
C1: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H1XU6A8/
Both of these look pretty good, have mixed reviews, but just want to know what you guys think would be best and if anyone actually used these in the past?
I know that there is also the AirDock, but I doubt it would hold the Note 4 all that well, so not bothering to include it.
I currently use this item in my car as a regular holder, so I wish there was one (other than the AirDock) which can utilize the ability to hold and charge the phone by mounting into the CD Slot of the car head unit: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004G1L52Q/
Please add to this list if anyone has better solutions.
I've been agonizing over this choice myself, but I'm even worse off than you- I've gotten hooked on having a magnetic mount (currently using the Bracketron Si earth elements mount), and I REALLY like the S-View cover, so what I really want is a car dock that does Qi charging AND holds the phone magnetically, with strong enough magnets to hold through the S-View flap! Unfortunately, it seems that at this point there aren't ANY magnetic Qi docks (apart from the Airdock, and I'm right on the same page as you there), let alone one that would work through the S-View flap! So basically if I want Qi I'm stuck either sacrificing the magnetic holding feature and going with arms, or I'll have to build my own custom dock. Haven't quite decided which route I'll go yet, but man do I wish there was a decent magnetic Qi dock!
Anyway, as for Qi docks that DO exist now, in my research I've found a couple that seem to really stand out and come up time and again as the go-to's for Qi in the car. Here's the best options I've seen so far:
The iOttie: http://www.iottie.com/Product/Detai...for Google Nexus 5 and Qi Enabled Smartphones
Amazon's got this one for $55 also: http://www.amazon.com/iOttie-Wireless-Standard-Motorola-Smartphones/dp/B00IRHQZTI
Nokia CR-201: http://www.mobilefun.com/38310-nokia-qi-wireless-charging-nfc-car-holder-cr-201-Reviews.htm
bit more expensive, but has some nice features.
Then there's this:http://www.tylt.com/vu-car-wireless-charger/
Not available yet, but it looks like it may be a decent option.
I've read a lot of mixed reviews on the plethora of non-name brand Qi gear thats out there, some people say that they work just as well for cheaper prices and others say that they're total junk. I guess I'd say if you see one you really like then just make sure that you read reviews on it so you don't get stuck with something that doesn't work or worse.
As for a mount that uses the CD slot, I haven't seen any Qi docks that come with that option but many docks share similar or identical mounting solutions, so once you find a Qi dock that you like you could probably find a non-qi dock that mounts in the CD slot and then just replace the actual dock with the Qi one. Personally I don't think I'd trust the CD slot to hold up a phone this heavy, I'd be worried about damaging the CD player not to mention it'll be much less steady, but hey if that's what you like then good luck!
Thanks for the input
I will have to look into the Ottie one as it does look fairly decent. The Nokia one is way over priced and I cannot say I am a fan of it. The Tylt is nice, but I am sure it is going to be quite costly due to their original designs of their products.
The reason I want it as a CD mount is because I currently have one (minus the Qi of course) and it works just fine, hold the phone super good, without issues at all what so ever. Plus, no damage done to the head unit or CD Slot (not that I use CDs of course lol).
I just want something very low profile, but for it to do the job you know. The reason why I do not want anything mounted on the windshield is because I hate wires and I like for the phone to be close to me while I drive. I do not text and drive though! I plan to run the wire behind my head unit and bring out just enough to plug into the Qi holder. This will be a pain in the rear of course, but I am anal when it comes to wires lol. I have a radar, dash cam, and soon a Qi charger, all of which I want to make fairly invisible with regards to wires.

I found one on sale (non brand name though)
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/QI-W...a-Lumia-920-820-Free-shipping/2041086689.html
and another
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-...S3-S4-Note2-Nexus-Nokia-Lumia/1795791846.html
I use this one:
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FC0NBI6/
I used it for my S3, and it does fit a Note 4 with the Ringke Fusion case on it with a little room to spare. I haven't used it for Wireless Charging on my Note 4 yet because I'm still waiting for my wireless receiver to arrive, but it has worked perfectly on my S3 for the last 6 months.
It doesn't go in a CD slot, but it does offer both the suction cup and the air vent hooks.

Plus, no damage done to the head unit or CD Slot (not that I use CDs of course lol)..

Keep in mind that none of the chargers that people listed here except for the Itian have the One Touch operation. Paradoxically that includes the iOttie charger (people who invented it). So to me they all seem ridiculously overpriced for the limited functionality they provide. I am using Itian, and so far pretty happy with it. If you really need some sort of specific mount (CD, Vent, or whatever), you may be able to take Itian head (it's detachable) and glue it to the mount that you like. I had to do that myself because by dash has rough texture and the only suction cup that would stick is iOttie gel cap. So I used a suction cup plus arm form a low end iOttie charger ($13.99 on sale) and Itian head ($27.99). Cheaper and more functional than name brands.

Thanks for the input
I actually ordered the C1 yesterday, but ordered it from AliExpress for $34 and should hopefully be here in about a week or so.
I will report back. I am wondering about purchasing the Itian though and seeing which one is actually better, but not sure yet.
I used AirDock with my LG G3. It should work with note4 also. Got nothing bad to say about that dock!

Disregard my earlier suggestion. Now that I finally have a Qi Receiver sticker for my Note 4, I'm finding that this one doesn't charge because the receiver isn't centered in the phone. I did cut up my receiver and turn the coil as close to the center as possible (careful not to cut the actual wires!), but it still doesn't charge for more than 2 seconds before the charging indicator turns off on the phone.
I ordered this one as a replacement and it's working great:
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F5XPCSC/
Caveat: I don't know if it would work with the receiver sticker still in it's original configuration... :/ If I had to guess, I'd say it would because I can slide my phone to either side a little bit and I don't lose connection.
I had it with my Note 3. With the Note 4, I upgraded the car charger to a QC 2.0 charger and my car charging need is solved. It charges way faster than the best Qi charger that I've tried.

Can someone with the AirDock comment on the strength of the magnet? I've been pretty interested in it, but the problem for me is that I really like the S-View case, so the magnet in the AirDock would need to be strong enough to hold through the S-View flap. Maybe someone could test how well it holds with a piece of cardboard or something between the AirDock and the phone? I've totally gotten addicted to having a magnetic dock, but I also love my S-View and I want wireless charging! I mean cmon, can't I have everything???

Just use these, its what I do and it works amazing
Right, I would assume I'd need to use the sticker but what I'm wondering is whether the AirDock will hold the phone with the S-View cover flipped around to the back. Basically the sticker would be on the back of the phone, then the S-View cover would be between the sticker and the AirDock. Are the magnets in the AirDock strong enough to hold the phone even with the cover between them and the sticker?

The nexus 5 has 4 metal discs in it specifically to make magnetic docks easy and allow for some self aligning.
The airdock with the nexus 5 works reasonable well. Not perfect, I do have to realign the phone more than once per day and end up grabbing or holding if if there's a big dip/bump/whatever.
However even with a thin case the n5 is unusable with the air dock. What's worse is that the airdock + note 4 is worse than the airdock + n5. I'm guessing the note 4 doesn't have the 4 discs.
I have an airdock and it works great with the Note 4.
i use an itian charger and it works great with double sided scotch tape for outdoor mounting. sticks vertically to the dash and holds the note 4 with two prongs.
While shopping for cars, I found out the camry and Avalon can come with wireless charging. I ended up with an Avalon Hybrid with tech pkg.
I'm not happy with this one - lost allways the connection - looking now one with three coils like my Itian desk charger, this one works perfect....

I like the iOttie...

Recommend: The best wireless charging car dock

Hi All,
I ordered my Note 9 512gb a little while back and have a few more weeks to wait. While I'm waiting I'm getting all the stuff I think I want to have with it. One of those things is a wireless charging car dock. There are too many out there to really know which is best so I thought I would ask the people that already have the note9 and possibly are already using a wireless car dock. Thanks!
I'm interested too. I'm searching for one usable with the clear view cover. Magnetic one would be great but I'm scared by the metallic ring and Qi interferences. I'm thinking of building my own based on the magnet already in the cover...
Nobody has a pony in this race?
I went with Choetech one for my other car because it has a USB C inout for power. Works good, about the same as the iottie one touch except not as convenient.

Thanks Gottria, I'll look into it :good:

I like the Choetech charger but 2 things bug me. The arms are slightly curved inwards toward the end and when the phone sits in the cradle all the way back the tips of the arms slightly block the screen. And forget about accessing the side edge function. 2nd is the mount, it doesn't use the 17mm ball and it's reversed compared to other mounts. The socket needs to be on the back of the device instead of the ball.

Thanks gottria. I use a panavise mount in my C63 and have a 17mm ball to hook the dock onto. This would've completely screwed up my setup :highfive:
I've just bought the choetech fast wireless charger mount. I have a Vauxhall vivaro and theres no good way to mount it so its on the windscreen towards the top with a USB trailing down to the quick charge 12v plug I use. I can see it being a pain but doesn't really block my view. I prefer air vent mounts had a baseus wireless charger but didn't even charge the phone. Compared to the choetech its much more cheapy and flimsy the choetech feels solid. Which is good but if anyone can advice a way I Can get a air vent mount to hold it to that then would prefer it.
My main worry about the choetech is with cold freezing weather coming in and frozen windscreens how well will it actually hold up as dont want my £1000 phone dropping and smashing. :fingers-crossed:

If you find a solution, let me know. I too am struggling to find one that works with the clear view cover
I have to say that when it comes to car mounts period, the folks at EXOGEAR are the best from my experience over the years. I've used their tablet and smartphone mounts. These mofos stick to practically any surface. Couple that with the way the phone snaps in and out of the mounts? It's so quick and easy.
But now I'm learning these guys make wireless chargers for their mounts. It says it goes "up to" 9v so I'm curious how fast it actually charges the N9.
Since it's EXOGEAR and I swear by their suction cup performance I'm going to buy it soon as it comes available and I'll check back later and let y'all know how it worked out. I honestly never felt the need to have a wireless charger in my car because I typically have plenty of battery life by the time I get home but this wireless charger peaked my interest.
https://exogear.com/product/exomount-qi/
I purchased the iOttie and loved it enough to purchase a second one for my wifes car. I havent found a single suction cup that would work with my leather in the car so I purchased a panavise mount and 17mm ball adapter to mount it. But while waiting for those to arrive I tested the suction cup and it holds... amazingly. The mount hasn't shifted in the slightest and I have launched the car from a dead stop a few times trying to get it to shake lose. I can feel my body violently being forced back into the seat but the mount doesn't look fazed. First time I can actual praise a suction cup mounting system.
Also I thought I should add that "Fast Charging" is displayed when the phone is docked.
I'm using the Baseus Qi Wireless Magnetic Fast Charger and it's pretty good. The only downside is if you have stiff car suspension (like in sports car) and get into a big bump, the phone can lose grip and fall.

Since my car already has a navigation screen I don't need the phone up in the vent area. Besides I didn't like any of the in vent holders. The magnetic phone holders out there I don't like since if i hit a bump or pothole the phone will fall due to its weight. There is a coin slot holder in my care but the wireless ones usually have a base that won't fit in that holder. But I then found a wood wireless charger a while back that had a metal base which is removable. I placed it in the coin holder and it charges my then Note 8, now Note 9 even with a case. Granted it is not a fast charge type of wireless charger but it does charge my phones quickly enough on the half hour of driving from work to home. So it does the job enough for me, looks great and I don't have to worry about the phone falling off a magnet or blocking the vent.

Very cheap foldable wireless charger.

Got this charger for £12.99 on Amazon:
mod edit - link removed
Feels cheap and looks cheap but it works and does the job well enough. It's foldable too, so you can use it either horizontal or vertical.
Worth it, if you need to buy a cheap one to leave at the office.
Would be great if wireless charger can work even with a metal piece on the back of casing for magnetic car phone holder

There are magnetic holders that claim to work without blocking the wireless charger. They use a metal piece shaped like an upside down "U" instead of a square one. Given all the warnings against mixing credit cards and metal on cases and what not with wireless charging, I'd be weary of trying it out myself on my own phone, but they do exist. Just search for wireless charging compatible magnetic mount, I'm sure some will turn out.
Could be that I'm missing something (perhaps even a crucial factor), but why couldn't you use a wireless charger at the same time you have a metal plate in your case? It can't be harmful to the phone right?
I have a strong enough carkit so I can use a relatively small circular piece of metal in my slim fit case for the Note 9, works a charm. I've tested the location in the case, so I can use this in my car and still be able to put it down on a wireless charger so it charges without a problem. Okay, so when I put my phone on the charger pad a bit to far down or up, it doesn't charge, but that's just a matter of trying which position is best and this will become a non-issue the more you use it (since you know exactly how to put it on the charging pad).
Please enlighten me whether or not it could be harmful in any way to the phone because I don't want to risk a $1250 phone for the convenience of charging wirelessly. But I haven't ran into trouble this way just yet. Been doing this also with my Galaxy S8 for over a year btw, it still works like new.
Btw, @OP, can you share a link to the charger?

I put a link to charger on the video description.
I just bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C5KCQQ4/
Fast charges a little slower than directly plugging the Samsung charger into the phone (as expected).
The hinge is a tight friction fit, so the angle is adjusted wherever you like.
