I've been playing with the Surface for about 2 weeks now and I found the lack of apps really doesn't bother me that much honestly... But I was wondering what are some apps you guys can't live without? Also, does anyone know what the time frame is for the BlueStacks app to come out?

Netflix and YouTube RT,a must for me.As for the app you mentioned i have know idea.
Not on RT ever, unless MS changes the restrictions.
See here:
https://getsatisfaction.com/bstk/topics/windows_rt_support
They are considering supporting RT next year, I think if enough people ask it they will have to implement it. Microsoft surely isn't stupid enough to block it either.
My advice is sign up on their forums and keep asking about windows RT, I have.

Actually not true - They have it listed on their Website as in the works as a supported OS. I have tweeted them for an update awhile back but never got a response.

Yea, you definitely should go on their Site cause it says they are looking to do it.. Just no timetable.. I knew that much, just curious if anyone else had any idea when.

Any rumors floating around on when we might possibly expect a little streaming action for Android?
thats one thing i miss from the iPhone... hopefully we get it soon.
I know right, i'm not sure what they are waiting for....

It will probably happen on windows mobile first because Netflix uses silverlight to steam its content on PC's, they also have a history of giving Microsoft the first shot at streaming rights.
Windows Phone 7 has had it since release. It's not on android yet due to all the security flaws in androids coding. There would be apps to download movies from netflix within days and that goes against netflix terms of use.
Well they have a non-working app at the moment so it should be right around the corner. All you can do is manage your queue at the moment.

Has anyone heard any new news on the possibility of a Netflix app that streams video on Android? I don't know about you guys but I really really want it! Are there still issues with security and whatnot?
Just curious if anyone has heard anything. They need to get this done!
Still just hearing more about security crap..

Ya, started watching Scrubs from the beginning last night and it'd be awesome if I could pick up where I left off and watch it on breaks and lunch on my phone while I'm at work. Could kill like a season a day lol
I'm assuming this will be a super noob question as no one ever asks but going to ask anyway.
Why is the Hulu fix/hack/edit any diff than this? So long as we can fool a browser into think it's a full desktop, why couldn't we stream through that instead of depending on an app to do it? #flamejacketon

I can't give a definite answer but I would assume that any content would run smoother/better through the app then a hacked browser.

this.
Besides, this same thread has been posted countless times, a simple search would've shown that. We are waiting for it to be released by Netflix, as our processor has the necessary security needed for the app to be released.
I do believe though, that we will have to wait until the LG Revolution is released to the public before we can get the app, as I suspect LG and Netflix have an exclusivity deal going, so LG can sell some phones.
Then again, I may be and have been wrong.

I had noticed the last flick I streamed on my laptop used Silverlight, (as far as I knew that was new) but definitely makes sense. Flash is hackable, SL is not.. Got it, thanks.

Netflix on android won't be using silverlight though. It could use Moonlight http://www.mono-project.com/Moonlight, but support for that on linux is far worse than flash and would probably be even more of a battery killer, so I'm guessing they will port whatever they use for iOS on the iphone/ipad to android.
There's no way the iphone version of netflix (which has been out for a while) uses silverlight (jobs would never allow that), so I am guessing they will probably just use the same libraries for android that they have for iOS and create a wrapper around that with java to create an executable.

Netflix has always used silverlight, at least as far as I have known. And yareally
is probably right about how they are going to go about it.
The main reason why Winmo 7 had/has so fast netflix is because of silverlight and the native ability (I believe) for it to run on winmo.
The latest Skype update for Android is available to everyone, but it only enables video chat on four specific handsets. Fortunately, impatient modders have gone some way to correcting this profound injustice, by creating APKs that activate video calling on other handsets too. So far we've heard of successful ports on the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation, Thunderbolt and EVO 4G. If you've got some other handset with Android 2.3, a little experimentation with the APK might also be worth your while. However, we just tried it on an Xperia Arc and didn't get very far: the app ran, but efforts to communicate with an Xperia Neo resulted in one-way video, a locked landscape mode and plenty of awkwardness. Let us know if you fare better -- you'll find a Thunderbolt-specific download at the DroidLife source link, and a more general APK at TechPetals.

Figured I would drop this in here if anyone has some know how and wants to look into it to see if there is anyway for us to have this on our phone. Doubt it though considering it requires 2.3 which seems to be the standard for google video chat and stuff, but hey, its worth a shot!!!
Found some more info. Tested and still didn't work but apparently on our device but confirmed on the SGS2. Here is the link for the guy who got it working.

yep. the official requires gb and in the list of device check. with device check removed, almost all with gingerbread can use it.

Yeah, one of Google's big thing at IO was that they wanted to eliminate the fragmentation, yet I haven't seen anything to indicate they're taking steps to achieve this.
Unfortunately it's one big advantage Apple has... they take a hard line position that the carrier doesn't touch the OS software, nor prevent the deployment of the updates. Not sure why Google is such a wuss when it comes to holding the carriers accountable for the timely delivery of their updates. AT&T says it's because they have to ensure a quality user experience, but comon, what AT&T customer actually believes that crap? LOL

Is anyone's phone dying quickly after installing this. I even tried signing out and closing the app but my phone legit drains 10% an hour on standby. So I deleted the app. Now my wifi is turning on and off and can't keep a constant connection. Help?

I personally have seen no change since installing it, as for the wifi thing are you rooted and running any rom of sort of just stock? I have seen some wifi issues with the roms. Don't know if maybe the app sparked the problem or what but maybe you can backup your apps and reinstall. Good luck

The only true advantage that Apple has over Android is that they only more or less support one device. Android is spread amongst how many different devices? It's easy to put out lackluster updates to a single device, but putting out updates to 20+ different devices isn't so easy.
how are you guys even getting it to install? is it actually working?
yes please, can any one confirm that the video call on Skype is working on the infuse?
regards
no it is not working. installing the custom apk does give you the video call option, but if you press it, it goes into landscape to prepare for video call and then it does nothing. gingerbread is needed since it uses the frontfacing camera api.

Yes, my phone's battery started draining in about two hours after installing Skype, so I uninstalled and things are better again now.
Even if Skype supports video on the Infuse, I don't think I will start using it unless they address the battery usage.

I'm intrested in one thing I couldn't find anywhere: can i view 2 programs in the same time? Just like in windows. For example on the left side of screen I can write office doc, and on the right side I can PDF files?
No.........................................
But why hasn't anyone thought of doing this? this would be an awesome feature, and we have the real estate to work with in tablet land. Android limitations that can't be overcome even with root access?
Yes.. so if you want to copy something from pdf to your doc, you must constantly switch programs, it is a bit harder but I think google, or someone else would add this feature soon..

There's an app called OnSkreen which will be implemented directly into OEM rom's which will allow for multi window running of applications. Check out their YouTube videos. Cool stuff, but you'll basically have to buy a tablet with it on there from the start (none exist at the moment).

It's not an APP, it's a special ROM that the company will sell to manufacturers - you can't just install it to your device. The beta will "hopefully" offer this rom to certain devices, but there's no guarantee that our Transformers will get it.

Is there any developer out there that have plans for making such an app for the phones as well?
I think that he/she would get donations from a lot of people if they started working on it. There are many programs that do not embed a widget option and if someone could make a widget that could scale down programs an ie put to running programs on the screen in vertical mode that would be soooooo niiiiiiice!! On my Galxy SII such an app would be perfect...
Anyone?
M
The thing is its not really an app but, like stated, a heavily customized OS. It goes back to how these mobile OS'es were devised. Its not windowed because they are assuming you are on a system that wouldn't perform well with multiple active apps and on a small screen where you would need all of the real estate.
There are times when I would wish for it but since apps are cached and not killed (if they are developed properly) its pretty easy to "alt-tab" back and forth between them when needed.

Cant wait to try this on TF, if it ever gets to platform.
Has anyone replaced the Android ROM with W8.1 Successfully? If so where would we find the W 8.1 ROM.
There hasn't been any progress with this yet as it calls for a person to literally open their phone and dump the entire os and then more than likely adjust the partitions and such for the regular m8s. There's already a few threads on this subject with this information in them. If we do see any type of port it will probably be a while before we see anything from it.
I'm excited. I hope the devs are successful.

Windows phones and Blackberries (older ones, don't know about newer ones nor do I know about iPhones) have working, functional, usable email clients which, so far, has totally eluded Android. Email is important to me, not enough to give up my Android phone but maybe to some it is?
There may be other reasons but for some people having a working email app is huge!
Android email apps fall into two classifications:
1. Totally Sucks and
2. Worse than Totally Sucks.
NOTE: All the above applies to POP3, IMAP works OK on any phone but that's due to the nature of IMAP, not to the email client.
