[Q] I'm in lockdown and can't get out. - HTC One S

I bought a HTC One S for T-Mobile USA. Has been working flawlessly. Today I got an OTA and my world is now upside down. I have spent 5 hours trying countless things to get my phone back up to no avail.
my phone stats:
hboot 1.09.0000
radio 0.16.31501s.16_2
open dsp-v28.1.0.32.0504
emmc-boot apr 2 2012,21:08:24
UNLOCKED
TAMPERED
How do I get back to square one and turn this phone back into something usable?
It has something called TWRP 2.1.7 installed on it and I have tried fastboot and a host of other things to remove it. I have even tried the thread on sending your phone back to stock but I can't access RUU because it won't load the driver. I have never rooted this phone nor do I believe USB Debugging was turned on before I accepted the OTA. I can communicate via fastboot in the command shell via a usb cable. The PC wont mound the SD card so I can't copy a new image and reboot this thing on a different rom and then send it back to stock.
I am about ready to throw it away because i can't seem to get a .zip file to it so it will run again (for putting a working build on it). There are no images to boot to. Somehow that got wiped and no backup was done. I don't give a poop if the data is whiped. Its all backed up via dropbox and exchange. I just want it up and running so i can use RUU and send it back to stock.
Any help would be appreciated.

I hate to tell you this but if you never unlocked or rooted your phone, somebody did. Your device is unlocked and running a custom recovery therefore you cannot accept over the air updates and that is your problem. You did not buy your phone that way from T-Mobile so what did you really do to get to this point?

I never said I bought it as OEM. I also never thought to ask the guy I got it from if he rooted it or unlocked it.

Relocking the boot loader then running an RUU should fix the issue. Once you do that enter the recovery and wipe everything/factory reset.
Then if you are trying to run a custom ROM you should be able to mount your SD card and push one to the phone.

Great reply however I am short on knowledge on how to do what you have recommended. I don't know how to relock the boot loader nor can I run RUU because I can't get the driver installed. Any help would be awesome. Thank in advance. Sorry I'm a noob at this.

In the dev section there is an all in one toolkit that will execute the correct scripts for you. Download it, then run it. You may also need the HTC sync drivers installed on your computer.
Once you see that the bootloader is locked run the ruu.
And don't apologize for being a noob, I am too lol. We all need help to get started.
Sent from my HTC One S using xda premium

If you install HTC sync to your pc it should install the driver's you need. Then install the one s tool kit in developers section to relock. Then run ruu.

Also, anything you see in blue text is what you'll need to type, or copy/paste, to avoid any quote confusion.
Files You Need:
T-Mobile USA RUU file (mirror) - it's about 563 mb, and worth saving once you download it.
Extremely Important: If you're on another carrier you'll need a different RUU file - DO NOT try and run this RUU file, it could really screw you up. Go to this link to find the right RUU file.
HTC Drivers (mirror) - You probably already have the drivers installed if you're needing this thread, but just in case...
ADB / Fastboot (mirror) - same as the drivers, but again, just in case...
Initial Setup:
Again, some of this might be redundant as you might already have this setup if you rooted/unlocked.
Install the HTC drivers if you haven't already
Unzip the adbfastboot.zip file to your desktop (anywhere, but I find it easiest to get to it on the desktop for my habits)
Getting into the bootloader (hboot):
If you're stuck in a boot loop, pull the batt... oh wait, we can't do that here. To perform a hard reset, hold down the power button for 10 seconds - in the process you'll see the softkeys start blinking, then it should reset. As soon as it starts to reset, release power, and hold down the volume-down button - hold it until hboot pops up (white screen, colored text).
If you're phone is fully powered off (make sure "fastboot" is disabled - settings > power), hold the volume-down key and while holding it, press and hold power for a few seconds. You can probably release the power button, just make sure you keep holding volume-down - after probably 3-5 seconds (maybe a bit more), hboot should come up.
If the phone is on and you're plugged in to your computer, make sure "usb debugging is enabled" (settings > developer options), shift+right-click the adbfastboot directory on your desktop (or wherever you put it), choose "open command window here", and in the prompt that comes up, input adb reboot bootloader.
Restoring:
Once you're in hboot, make sure you select Fastboot (if you don't see it, you're in Fastboot already). In the command prompt referenced above, input fastboot oem lock. This will relock your bootloader in order to allow the RUU to run. Historically this has been necessary for an RUU to run, but I haven't actually tested it without relocking on the One S, and assumed based on previous HTC devices that this would continue to be the case. Edit: thanks rbrookstx for confirming that re-locking is necessary
Your phone will reboot when it relocks - follow the steps above to get back into hboot.
Once you're back in hboot, make sure you're in Fastboot, and open / run the RUU file. It'll go through some initial prompts, then it should start. It takes about 10-15 minutes, maybe less, depending on your computer.
Once it's done, it'll simply go back into hboot - reboot, and you're good to go.
A couple of notes:
When you unlocked and flashed a custom recovery (if you did that), hboot probably said "tampered with" and when it booted up, it probably had a red message under the "HTC" logo about being a developer only device. That should be gone now. It should boot up clean, and hboot should simply say "relocked", with no tampered message.
Until a better solution comes out, once you unlock the bootloader with HTC's official method, it can never be locked the way it was from the factory. "Relocked" is the best you can do.

This is what worked. I had to search the internet for this stuff but the HTC driver, the fast boot and the RUU with a matching or higher radio number all made it work out.

Evo Shift Stuck In Boot Loop Please Help!

Hello,
I have an Evo Shift stuck in the boot loop. As soon as I put the battery in all it does is reset itself to the screen with the white background and green "HTC" logo, and will keep restarting until the battery dies.
If I hold volume down and turn it on, it does go into the bootloader, but picking ANYTHING, such as recovery or factory reset, does nothing but sending it back to the HTC screen.
I have tried flashing the RUU.exe (2.27.651.2) through Fastboot USB and it completed successfully, but it just restarts right back to the HTC screen. I have also put PG06img that I found on here on the root of my card, and it will never load it up.
Are there any other solutions anyone can think of? They would be much appreciated. I see a lot of these threads for regular Evos, but not for Shifts.
The only other thing I really know about the phone is that it is:
S-On
Hboot- 0.98.0001
Radio- 1.08.00.0506
Thank you so much for all of your help!
Seems to me you aren't rooted and that's more than likely your problem, boot into fastboot and use the ruu application for gingerbread.

While I am pretty sure I am not rooted, if you are talking about the early RUU release; 1.17.651.1, the application starts and then ends up failing in the beginning of the process. Is this what you are talking about? The drivers should be all good, the application starts to flash and then dies though. Thanks!

Use the new RUU. But make sure your SD card is formatted to a FAT32 partition. (Stock 2gig sd card and some other store boughts are not)
You can format on your computer and then place the RUU on the root of sd card again
(Bootloader won't recognize the ruu zip if not partitioned)

Ok, I just did this, everything updated fine and all completeted on the bootloader. It then said "press power to reboot." I did so, and went right back into the same boot loop. Any other ideas. I figured running this, and the RUU.exe on the computer were the sure fire ways to get this thing working again???

So just a little information.
you said your not rooted?
So that means you have no ability to flash anything because you have no custom recovery and the bootloader isnt unlocked (S-on)
So what DID you do before it bootlooped? there had to have been something you were trying to do.
Not trying to blame anything on you at all just want to make sure we are helping the most accurate way possible

No I hear ya. I was sold the phone fairly cheap and was told "all you need to do is to reinstall the RUU, that is all that is wrong." Obviously I was skeptical, but when I checked everything out, everything looked good, and again, for the price, I knew it was a gamble. That being said, I'm sure something was tried in order to modify the phone and this is how it got like this.
I have soft bricked my old Evo 4g a handful of times and an RUU or Rom flash would always solve the problem.
Anyway, there is no custom recovery, and I'm pretty sure theres no root because it is still "S-ON," I am just trying to see if anyone here has any more info before it goes in for repair.
The only last thing I would guess you MIGHT be able to do is to install a custom recovery, but is there ANY way to do this by just being in the bootloader and using FASTBOOT USB? Any more help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It shouldn't have a custom recovery if it shows s-on.
I don't see why the RUU wouldn't work.
Honestly it doesn't sound like a softbrick- sounds like its just bricked (Which ive only heard of 1 Shift getting bricked completley)

I'm trying to resolve a very similar problem as him, but I know of the history of my phone (since I'm the only owner), so hopefully an answer for me can assist him also.
The Story: One day, I'm playing Uno HD (downloaded from Android Market). I toss out a Draw 4, and then I see: "Google Infrastructure Failure" and a Triangle with an exclamation mark. I reset the phone, and it starts up fine. Then a few hours later, my phone randomly restarts itself into the bootloader screen after trying to reload the home screen (because the memory manager is overly aggressive).
I see no HTC Screen. It goes straight to the bootloader without any input. If I plug it to the charger from an off state, the amber light comes on, and 10 seconds later, bootloader screen. With a battery, it appears automatically after 45 seconds.
Fastboot can read my memory card just fine. It's already been re-formatted as FAT32 in my pitiful attempt to try to repair it. It's checked and read a PG06IMG file I placed on the SD Card's root, went through the entire process of reading it, but it doesn't ask me if I want to upgrade. It takes me back to the original screen. (Maybe I'm loading the wrong file).
Recovery and Factory Reset immediately restarts the bootloader after showing me the skateboarding android splash screen.
I've also tried to flash the newest stock RUU for it. (2.76.651.4), but after the RUU sends the command to start up in bootloader mode, the phone shuts off. Thus giving me the connection error.
(Maybe if someone could rewrite the .exe file to not send out the command to begin loading as if it was in the bootloader screen, it could work. I'd pay for that.)
Other Stuff:
ROM: Stock Sprint Gingerbread OTA ROM. I've been living the vanilla life. No root access. No funny stuff. Just a stock phone with apps (Third Blade, Uno HD, ASTRO File Manager, ect...)

Is there a way we can flash a file from the SD Card which will turn off the security and/or temp/perm root it? (forgive my noobness for such a question)
EDIT: I'm referring to a way that's outside of the adb push method. My device can't be found, and the device won't get past the bootloader screen, so that method doesn't help me too much. However, I do have the ADK Installed and the ADB Command Line works fine.
Ok .. HERE'S THE SOLUTION:
First off all if your S- ON it means you are NOT rooted
If you get stuck in a bootloop .. don't worry it can be fixed.
What you need to do is download PG06IMG.ZIP and place it on your sd card, you can access your sd card by going into recovery then mount section, then usb. This will allow you to move the file from your computer to the root of your sd card.
Once you do this be sure you back up any info you don't want to lose. Once you have the file in place, go back to fastboot ( hold vol down and power) it will read file and when it asks you to update press vol up. It will take a few minutes to update this will revert your phone back to stock but if you have an old recovery it will not do a full restore, it will only update the rom.
Once you get your phone back to working, I recommend updating your recovery by downloading Rom Manager and flashing the latest clockwork recovery. This problem happens usually due to an old recovery.
One other thing you can try if you do NOT want to reset your phone, you can try flashing a new kernal.

RUU won't work if your stuck in bootloop ..

If you want to root your phone use visionary to temp root then use shift rr .. you can then flash a custom recovery which is essential to avoid this from happening again

For the thread starter, the person that sold you the phone probably tried writing to the system partition with s-on. Since you can get to the bootloader, see if you can get into recovery. If you can, recovery can be seen in adb, even the stock recovery. From there, gingerbread root, plenty of guides out there, make sure you flash the misc.img, download the froyo downgrade zip (that pgimg09.zip or something like that, just search for it, but not with the numbers I just gave, those are made up.)
From there either flash the gingerbread zip or ruu, and goon with a unrooted life. Or follow one of the many guides to froyo root, and live the life of the rooted. Your choice.
For the second person with a similar issue, the same method will work for you (assuming you can get to recovery), gingerroot, froyo downgrade, and since you like being unrooted, just ruu or zip back to gingerbread.
Solution found enjoy, and just think, if root hadn't been discovered for gingerbread, you would be screwed right now, make sure to thank otaking.
I have the same boot loop problem. I tried using the PG06IMG.zip file and fastboot/bootloader screen says I have the wrong image. It's most likely because it's for 2.2 and I have 2.3. I also don't have any recovery. Is there a PG06IMG.zip for 2.3 or the like?

i'm downloading the zip again right now.
since i have s-on, will i be able to install it though?
i can get the file on the root of the sdcard with an adapter since i can't push from adb. and i can't temp root the phone because if i try a normal reboot i get this stupid boot loop. is there a way to get s-off through hboot on the phone?
i don't know why i didn't notice that first file was messed up, it was only 6MB.

[Q] Cannot Flash Back To Stock, Boot, or Mount

First of all I apologize if this has been covered, I have been trying to find a solution for 3 days straight. I have a Rogers Wireless HTC One X I managed to unlock bootloader and root as well as having access to TWRP 2.1.8. recovery.
My problem is when I tried to apply the 3 dot removal mod my phone suddenly would not boot past the first screen, and a message would appear for developers use do not distribute but just stay on that screen. I have tried numerous things to no avail. I can boot in recovery and mount sd card from there (but have not found a successful way to restore from within recovery mode) otherwise in fastboot etc. the computer does mount the phone at all. it will not mount as a device properly so I cannot run the RUU and flash to stock.
So I am left with a unmountable and unbootable phone (brick) and have no other ideas on how to fix it if possible. BTW the device does show in device mgr and the computer gives the connect and disconnect alert, but it will not mount. Also, I have read the bootloader has to be relocked to flash back to stock if I relock the phone I cannot access recovery therefore an endless nightmare. Also, within TWRP recovery I try to reboot and it gives an error saying no Android OS found, install a rom or restore from backup (which I have neither) so I have to hold the power and dwn volume button to reboot each time to switch from recovery to fastboot. I think its toast.
Thank you in advance for any responses, I have been up almost 36 hours straight trying to figure this out and the phone is not even a week old. :crying:
There's a link in dev to unofficial twrp with usb mount support install that by following the directions in the thread. Then you'll be able to copy a rom to the phone for flashing.
Or you can install HTC Sync on your computer and that may allow you to use a RUU to flash back to stock. HTC Sync has the required drivers to make a Windows PC recognize the HOX.

Yes, I have tried relocking bootloader, it did not help with the phone being recognized by the computer also when I oem lock I cannot access recovery and such. HOX bricked - HELP (will compensate handsomely)

Ok guys, so here's the problem. my HOX (rogers) is bricked because of what i assume is a bad rom install. I am a noob, I just wanted jellybean and did some things, bricked my phone and here i am. anyone (first person) who is able to un-brick this thing will get $50 in their paypal account WITHIN THE SAME MINUTE - i swear by it. please, i just want my phone back.
So, the steps I took were:
1. downloaded a rom and jb package from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790032
2. transferred the roms onto my computer (am overseas atm, at a coffee shop writing this)
3. did a twrp recovery, transferred the recovery files onto my comp
4. did the factory reset option (wiped data, SD and cache via twrp)
5. rebooted, did transfer of above mentioned files (the rom, jb apps package and recovery of data and system)
6. booted into twrp, flashed the rom and jb apps package (should have rebooted first and then twrp-ed i know)
7. booted; IT WASNT WORKING (i know it was alpha, but i mean constant "phone stopped working" and "messages stopped working?" no one else had that problem...)
8. SO... i said to hell with jellybean and rebooted into twrp, installed the system recovery package i had on twrp (probably where i went wrong...)
9. BIG PROBLEM. the phone won't boot. It's stuck on the HTC logo with just the message "this build is for developer purposes" &c.
10. I go into TWRP and the SD card won't even mount.
I'm on TWRP v2.1.7 atm... and i mean, it really is bricked. I can load into bootloader, and when I plug it into the comp it says fastboot usb instead of fastboot so i know it recognizes being plugged in (maybe it's just recognizing the charge influx?) but when i DO plug it in, it wont show up on my computer as anything. before on jellybean i would try to mount to disk drive and the computer would say something along the lines of driver installation failed or something...
and last resort - would... rogers honor the one-year warranty i have on this? I lost the receipt (stupid i know) but i have the warranty information provided in the box back at home. Rogers still has my customer information and I have many forms of ID to verify that it IS me... and it would be financially beneficial to them to honor the warranty, as if they don't, I'll just cancel my contract and move to another carrier out of spite. The guy that works there probably still does, and should remember me (we had an extended conversation about something i don't quite remember)... what's your two cents on that? Rogers is notorious for being crappy with customer service but eh... worth a shot right?
Anyways... I'd really appreciate it if anyone can give me any information on salvaging this bricked phone. i mean, I said 50 bucks but im willing to negotiate.
Thanks, and I'll be waiting for a speedy reply
The easiest solution would be to download a Rogers RUU from the Evita Shipped Rom thread boot into bootloader then fastboot connect phone then type fastboot devices to make sure it comes up then fastboot oem lock then run the RUU.
Sure you'll have to root and unlock again but you'll get your phone back.

I once saw sd not mounting. Only fix was to force a shutdown. Hold the power button for 5-10 seconds, you should see the bottom touch buttons flash just prior to it fully turning off.
Push and hold down vol prior to releasing power button and hold while the phone boots.
Hope it boots to recovery again but with sd card access. If not rinse and repeat a few times until it does work.
Personally from fastboot I wouldnt switch to recovery, but instead I would install a ruu.

I would try reflashing recovery from fast boot first...and see if you can get back in.
If not fast boot OEM lock and ruu as stated. Certainly not bricked if u have fast boot.
Also if Canadian you can add me on gtalk as well. [email protected] , niceppl you can add me too u lucky soff canuck.

Fix
First to Relock your device, you will want to boot into your bootloader and select fastboot. After you've selected fastboot plug your device into your pc and open a command prompt. You'll want to type 'cd C:\Android' and then 'fastboot oem lock' and your phone will restart with a locked bootloader. Now you can upgrade to the RUU without any issues.
Now find your ruu here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Once you've finished upgrading your ruu you will want to boot into your bootloader again, with your device unplugged, and select fastboot. THEN plug your device in and run your command prompt again on your PC. Again, cd to C:\Android and type in the following command to unlock your bootloader again: 'fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin' (I've heard reports of some people having to type this command two or three times for it to work but it went the first time for me)
Hope this helps ^____^

[Q] One S Brick? HELP!

Novice here.
Ran the All-in-One utility today and after the CWM installed I hit "Perm root" without reading the thing below telling me to boot to recovery first. It's now stuck in boot loop. Everything went off fine up until the Perm root. Even that said successful and then restarted. Only after the process was completed did the recovery loop begin. No HTC logo loop. Just reboots into CWM over and over no matter what technique I use (except for opening the case).
I've read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599363
And am trying to install ADB to push ANY possible ROM over to the SD card. My recovery allows the toggle of /mount sdcard and /mount system, however adb fastboot push doesn't work. "error: device not found"
And I can't do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644730 because my phone is stuck in the recovery loop. If I try volume down + power, it just comes back to recovery screen. I've tried factory reset, I've tried wiping cache, I've tried wiping Dalvik, and still nothing. I did flash the SuperSu.zip after I had used the Perm Root button on Haroon2000's app.
I'm incredibly flustered as I've rooted devices for years and this is my first problem. I've seen similar complaints all with ideas of breaking into the phone and unplugging it's battery so I can get to the bootloader etc, but I'm so very confused. So many posts telling me to do so many things.
Can someone please help break down a tangible solution here? I'm freaking out.
Cheers
EDIT: If someone can get my phone fixed, I'll Paypal them $50 USD. I really need my phone back ASAP :\
I don't know if this is your solution, but you did not mention it as one of your attempts.
Have you looked into running an RUU?

I'll update this again once I try breaking the phone down and yanking the battery. But I have tried running the RUU. I can't get to the bootloader right now and it's not listing the device when I adb devices.
I'm going to go home from work since I've spent 7 hours on two machines (XP/7) trying to fix this PoS and redo everything from the ground up. Hopefully my anger will have overcome it.
Something I've noticed however, is that within the CWM recovery, I can use the All-in-one tool to reboot the phone. So it is reacting to ADB commands. Perhaps trying to use ADB fastboot (Right-click method) instead of full ADB installation could be a problem with trying to push a ROM zip. Also, as far as the RUU goes. I don't remember what happened there. I'll edit this when I get home.

Okay, update.
I was able to get ADB working and detect my phone.
Next, I was able to push Venom Rom to phone. I factory reset, wiped cache, wiped Dalvik, and was able to install Venom.zip. It then asked to reboot (per Venom screen) and I said okay. It then returned to CWM Recovery. I was confused but left everything as is. I have now reset the phone by holding the power button for around 10 seconds. It then restarted to the HTC Quietly Brilliant screen. I have been looking at that screen for about 5 minutes.
Also pertinent: I did try to run the RUU, but it didn't connect through USB. (I forget what it said verbatim). So that didn't work. I also was able prior to this entire process get into the bootloader via dumb luck.
Any suggestions? I am staring at the HTC boot screen still. Do I try to restart and enter bootloader? If so, then what? It seems there is something wrong with CWM. Can I switch recoveries? Can I uninstall it?
Calm down we have all been there,
When you flashed venom did you flash the boot image? Also i use twrp instead of cwm i find twrp better .
To enter bootloader hold power button and down vol together .
As gazknight said, this seems like proper kernel not being flashed or having an issue. If you flashed the boot.img with fastboot, try again erasing cache from fastboot first. The commands are as follow:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash boot boot.img (where this boot.img is the one inside the zip from the rom you choose and must be left in the same folder than fastboot)
It happened to me a couple times when i was on hboot 1.14 that I had to flash the boot.img a second time sometimes, somehow it was not working the first time, randomly, even though the flash had completed ok on fastboot.
If still doesn't work try doing a factory reset from TWRP and flashing ViperOneS again.
If that still doesn't work, you might want to try another rom, like TrickDroid, you would then have to flash the boot.img from this other room with fastboot, remember that.
Try and let us know
Hold down volume down while you're trying to boot, that will get you in boot loader, go to fast boot by pressing the power key, connect your phone to your computer, run the flash viper boot img thingy and you're set!

Same issue with HTC One S bricked but in European version, Stock ROM
hello,
I did't want to start a new topic, as I'm experiencing a similar issue with my HOS. Briefly, yesterday morning I plug the phone from charger at 06.00 am. Play with it for a while and then go to work. Used it at work for a few phone calls until 10.00 am (so 4 hours on fully charge battery). Then at 10.00 am I went into a meeting and left the phone out of my sight for 20-30 minutes. When I came back from the meeting I realize that the phone was closed. I try to open it (power button) but nothing. Press power for 10-30 seconds with volume down - still no effect.
Then I took the charger (the original one that I always use to cherge it) and plug it, left it for 2-3 minutes and press power. The phone starts but all I have is the white screen with HTC logo and if I press the power button + volume down the phone goes into bootloader. That's all I can do with it for now.
I have stock rom, bootloader is locked and I never try to root the phone. Is it any chance to repair it by myself or I have to sent it to the repair shop.
many thanks in advance.
Alright so I feel like I'm getting closer.
Here's whats happening now. It's in the HTC boot screen loop. I can get it into bootloader whenever I want, but now it's not detecting /sdcard in recovery. Within the bootloader, fastboot won't detect my device and my computer (Windows 8) claims the device is malfunctioning. I can still use fastboot adb commands from my computer when it is in recovery. I have gone into bootloader and cleared storage, as well as factory reset after. Also, it used to reboot into recovery endlessly. Now it appears that isn't hte case and reboots from recovery into the OS, but will not work.
I'm going to try and flash using adb w/o sdcard the boot.img as suggested above. I'll keep updating so others can know the process if they soft-brick their phone (I'm assuming this is a soft brick because I can still run things etc).
Update: trying to do fastboot erase cache from within recovery gives me "Waiting for device". As I've said, for some reason, it says the device is malfunctioning/not detected when I'm in the 1.14 Hboot Bootloader. But again, I can issue adb devices from within recovery. Sdcard still not mounting.
Edit: I'm issuing adb commands through adbfastboot files. Do I need to have the Android SDK fully installed with the Manager thing, or does the basic adbfastboot work (From here: http://www.htconeforum.com/forum/ht...e-your-htc-one-s-back-100-stock-relocked.html). That adb fastboot has the following files: adb, fastboot, adbwinapi.dll, adbwinusbapi.dll.
I think the source of the current problem is that I can no longer access my /sdcard or mount it. One step forward, then two steps back -_-.

You might need to do it as administrator.
I think I've got it. One last tip. All of the above has been helpful, but I think the problem was trying to use my Windows 8 laptop. The second I got to work, I plugged it in on the bootloader to my XP machine and voila! it recognized fastboot and listed devices.
I have tried to run the RUU 2.35.531.7 but just like unrooting my old phone, I had issues because that update was already on this phone, so it goes through the entire process only to tell me on the windows XP utility that it had failed because it was the wrong update. When I did this to my old One S right before I sent it into Tmobile for warranty, it did the same thing with the 1.53 RUU, then when I found the 2.35, it worked like a charm.
So my last question (hopefully) then is, am I missing something as for installing an OLD or exact same RUU? Or is there a newer one than the 2.35.531.7?
I haven't tried on a Windows 7 machine, but I have one available here at work. I'm wondering if I should try to fastboot a ROM. Any suggestions what I can do to get it back to stock, or an old old stock version? I'd like to root it so I can use my Titanium Backup.
Update: Before ending this reply, I read that the RUU may be failing because the bootloader is unlocked/tampered still. I'm going to run it again to grab the error code to make sure of the issue, because it seems you should be able to revert or use any RUU (correct?).

The bootloader does need to be relocked for the RUU too work and the RUU you used before should work because I have used the same RUU a few times and it worked fine.

I'll try that. thanks.
Now on the same XP computer, it's not showing when I adb devices, however it does show in device manager. This changed after trying to do the RUU without relocking.
Yeah! Fixed!
After enough toggling, I changed the recovery to the T one and relocked my bootloader. It turns out detecting the device wasn't necessary somehow. Then I ran the RUU and voila!

[Q] automatic and continuous reboot

First off: I have an AT&T HTC one X
I am an almost total noob when it comes to this stuff so please bear with me here.
I had my roommate put cyanogenmod onto my phone when I got it and all was well until I moved to Asia and got an unlock code from AT&T to be able to use it over here. The unlock code wouldn't work and I found some stuff online saying that it might be a problem with cyanogenmod.
I followed a youtube instruction guide on how to get rid of the mod and everything was going fine until right at the end when I got a windows notification that the RUU had stopped working. I figured I would just do it again, but the actual program itself said it was successful. As I waited for it to reboot and load the roms, it started a loop. The loop is the white screen with the green htc letters for a few seconds and then it goes to a black screen with a phone logo in the middle. Around the phone logo is what looks like a recycling symbol except circular instead of triangular and on the screen portion of the phone logo there is an arrow facing down.
I assume this is just telling me I need to actually download some software on the phone, but it won't connect via USB and every time it starts up it says that the drivers were not successfully installed and htc sync manager doesn't recognize that a device is even connected. The loop continued and i tried to boot it back into the fastloader which did nothing. I held down the buttons as if to boot it into fastloader, but this time for about 15 seconds which took me to a battery charging screen and finally ended the loop.
I assume(hope) that since it's actually responding to input from the buttons that it's not irreversibly bricked. Is there any way I can get some version of android back on this thing? Any help would be much appreciated
Are you able to get the phone into the bootloader?
To boot into the bootloader there are two methods.
With phone powered on
Hold the volume down button, then hold the power button (so you're holding both buttons together), the button lights will start to flash, they will stop flashing and the screen will go blank, after a couple of seconds let go of the power button but continue to hold the volume down button until you reach the white screen with text, this is your bootloader.
With phone powered off

Please post the first five lines. Also, exactly which RUU did you try to use?

This is why people should be learning to do things themselves. Now you've put him in a situation where he doesn't know what he's doing, very dangerous on a modified device with root access.

the RUU i tried was the update from the htc site "HTC One X for AT&T Software Upgrade 1.29.2014"
the first five lines that appear on the phone are
*** RELOCKED ***
EVITA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.18.0000
RADIO-1.35A.32.45.27
OpenDSP-v33.1.0.45.1128
also my computer doesn't recognize my phone is even plugged in at this point
Before you attempt to run the RUU again it's very important that we find out what your current CID is, if it's still SuperCID and you run the RUU you could brick your phone. To do this you're gonna need to have a working connection between your phone and your PC, so you'll need to make sure you have drivers installed, and you'll also need to have adb/fastboot installed. Do you have any drivers currently installed? If so, how did you install them?

The only drivers I would have on my phone might be the ones from the original RUU I downloaded and ran which got me into this mess in the first palce, but I dont even know if they're on the phone since it's in its current state. I have adb and fastboot from downloading the android sdk slim pack. I also have HTC sync, but I'm not sure how that fits into the equation

Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Where on earth did you get that RUU? It isn't even for this device. Delete it now.
Drivers don't go on your phone, they're on your PC. HTC Sync Manager fits into the equation because it's the best way to get the drivers installed on your PC.
Uninstall HTC Sync Manager and the drivers that should be in the same sub-menu in the start bar on your PC. Uninstall any other phone software you might have on your PC.
Install HTC Sync Manager again, put your phone in fastboot mode, connect your phone to your PC, drivers should begin to auto-install.
Navigate to where you have adb.exe and fastboot.exe on your PC (we'll call this your fastboot folder). Shift + right click anywhere within that folder, select open command prompt here, issue the following command:
Code:
fastboot oem readcid
Please post the result.
Before we go any further, I need to be brutally honest with you. Once you have successfully run the correct RUU, which will return the phone to a stock configuration, leave it stock. Judging from your couple of posts here you're on a collision course to bricking your phone. You just don't seen to posses the slightest idea of what you're doing, couple that with owning a modified device, and the results are almost always disastrous. I'm not saying this to be cruel, I'm saying this because I'd hate to see you brick your device. The only way it's safe to have a modified device is if you're willing to put in the hard work of researching (days/weeks/months/years), and continuing to research to stay on top of this ever changing game.

ok i attempted all of this, but nothing happens because my computer won't even recognize that my phone is plugged in. So htc sync manager is telling me to connect a device and the command prompt just says <waiting for device> when I type in the command to figure out the CID.
Also, I take no offense from your warning. I wasn't going to try to mess with it any more after I got my the stock OS and my phone unlocked for asian networks. I really appreciate all the help

There's no point in attempting any fastboot command until you can get the PC to recognise the device. Are you using a usb 2.0 port, and the original HTC usb cable? What does it say on the screen of your phone when you connect it while it's in the bootloader? It should say fastboot, fastboot usb, or fastboot ac.

Tpank, use the snipping tool on your computer to post a screen capture of your fastboot adb folder. its the folder that you are running the command prompt from (or should be).
BTW thanks Timaaaaa for helping my friend out. When I unlocked his phone we didn't know he would have the opportunity to move out of the US to Thailand so I figured I would be around to help with something like this. Thanks again.
Why would we need a screenshot of the fastboot folder?

ok so it says "Fastboot usb". I am using the original htc usb cable. I'm not sure if it's a usd 2.0 port all I know is that it's an Intel 6 Series/C200 Series.
When I ran the command prompt it says:
<bootloader> cid: 11111111
OKAY [ 0.017s]
Ok, so you have a working fastboot connection now, right? The problem you face at the moment is that you can't run an RUU with your phone in the current configuration. S-on + SuperCID + jb RUU = brick. Your only real option at this stage is to do this:
-Unlock the bootloader at htcdev.
-Flash TWRP recovery.
-Flash a ROM to get the phone booting.
-Get s-off via Facepalm S-off.
-Run the correct at&t RUU to return the device to stock
-Change the CID back to the at&t CID.
-Relock the bootloader.
-Go back to s-on.
That probably seems like a lot of work but it's the only way for you to proceed. I have detailed instructions for several of those procedures in the How-To Guide For Beginners thread in my signature.

So I can;t get past the first step because it's not recognizing my phone still. When I ran the first command in the command prompt, where it should have listed my phone it says "List of connected devices" and nothing underneath it.
How did you get the CID?

I'm not sure why I can find the CID and not get it listed as an attached device. I tried to run the adb devices command a few times and then ran the fastboot oem readcid command in the same window and I could get the cid but still cant get it to recognize the device
Are you attempting adb commands while the device is in fastboot mode? They won't work, only fastboot commands will work there, adb commands work while the phone is booted into the OS. Use "fastboot devices" while in fastboot mode.
