KatKernel - TF101
Kernel | SOD/RR fix | CPU OC | GPU OC | UV | CIFS | IPTABLES | TUN | FSYNC on/off
Hi everyone
I'm moving the KatKernel into its own dedicated thread.
See post #2 for more details.
Hopefully it helps to avoid confusion between the K.A.T app and the KatKernel
That will also allow easier reports as I'll know which one you're talking about when you post
(Remember to post the kernel version & the rom version when you report)
Latest versions : (flash in recovery & wipe /cache + dalvik )
JellyBean 4.1.*:

Please don't repackage or redistribute the zips in another thread, as it'll just make it very difficult for me to maintain and understand user feedback if your repackaged version is broken, has too many differences or is outdated.
Thanks

- Guevor for his kernel
- K900 for the lidpatch

- KatKernel & KatBoost:
The main goal of these is to try to improve the overall responsiveness of the User interface, improve multitasking and try to avoid I/O jam.
It includes misc config changes and tweaks (some are backported from the other roms I modified for the tablet I had before the TF101.)
New IO schedulers versions added, including Deadline and BFQ V4 (set by default).
Compiled with the latest Linaro toolchain.
The Kernel was based onto Guevor's kernel. so it's overclockable.
Will see also about improving stability too if there's some issues.
But currently running at 1400MHz with SD card and microSD I don't have any RR or SOD.
(Only thing to know is that sometime if the tablet has just gone into a sleep cycle, you'll have to wait for a few seconds before you can wake it up, so just press again to wake it up)
Main Features:
General: CPU Overclockable, Vdd, GPU overclocked to 425, fuse, swap, cifs, nfs, cgroups, netfilter/iptables, tunneling, xpad
CPU Governors: performance, powersave, ondemand, interactive, conservative, lagfree, smartassV2
I/O schedulers: noop, deadline, cfg, sio, bfqV4, row (default)
TCP Congestion: Veno, cubic, westwood, yeah, vegas
FSYNC: disable(default) / enable with: echo 0/1 > /sys/class/misc/fsynccontrol/fsync_enabled
(0=disabled=faster, if you have a stable TF101 and no reboots, you should be good to go with it disabled, just make sure you turn it off cleanly.
it is however slightly less safe, and dataloss could occur under rare circumstances if you reboot and that changes were not written to disk for example, but you still lose date even with it on in that case anyway...)
If you want to reenable permanently you can flash this after the kernel: fsync_on.zip
About Overclocking: keep in mind that overclocking depends on different parameters, one of them being a good power supply / battery.
So if your battery reach low levels: Stop overclocking as it will usually not be able to delivery stable power.
My advice for low battery levels would be:
- below 30%: stop overclocking (you can put a profile for that in cpu master for example)
- below 15%: you might even want to slightly underclock it. (especially if you use a bunch of stuff that is eating power, like bluetooth, wifi, sd & microsd).
- KatKernel_Lidpatch
Contains KatKernel & KatBoost with the additionnal logic revert for the dock lid
It also adds a sysfs interface for it.
See K900 post about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1883241
It is required for the roms that have implemented the reverted lid logic.

Yes that's what the lidpatch fixes.
There are roms that have implemented it and others that have not.
So for roms that have the patch on the rom side you need the kernel that has the lidpatch too.
Which rom are you using ?
I'm still downloading (slow slow) ParanoidAndroid & LiquidSmooth for testing,
but since both are using RaymanFX kernel, they most likely need to use the _Lidpatch KatKernel for those
If someone can test that and confirm, it'd be good

Bad settings app, it should never crash
But try the KatKernel_56b_Lidpatch version that I just uploaded , it should prevent that.

well I'm not going to stay long enough on LiquidSmooth to tell you much,
but so far it works.
Better wait for more reports from users that might be using that rom as their daily driver.

Alright I'm trying Liquid now I still can't figure out why when I use KAT lid patch version it crashes the settings.apk when you go to storage

Compare to 47b, what changes had made for #55b? Just for ROM compatibility?

GPS fix?
What exactly is the GPS fix integrated?
I've left GPSTest sitting in an area where normally I'll get at least 8 locks within a minute, and all. I'm seeing is 1-3 birds which appear then disappear but never lock?
Am I missing something, never seen such dismal GPS performance on my TF.
Any ideas? Flash the agps patch?
Thanks.

At the beginning JB roms used to have gps not working at all,
the 'gps fix' is fixing that, most roms include it by default already now, so it's not changing anything on these.
For the gps lock it's the usual routine, you just need to leave it until outside preferrably and it'll lock.
Once it has locked the subsequent locks should be faster.
I've never tried the agps patch from the other thread, so not sure if that helps or not.
I get a fix fine here.

So if I get it right: if I'm on EOS rom, build 81 on my tf 101 with kat 47b kernel. Then there's no need to update kernel?

That's correct feature wise, there is nothing new for TeamEOS
Kernel 55 is only adding compatibility for more roms.
Other changes will come after, once I get enough reports that it's working with other roms and still works with TeamEOS3
So in that aspect it'd still be good to upgrade to it

[ROM-JB][OC/UV] CvD-Nibbles 1.6 ~ Custom Kernel ~ GAPPS (Updated: 1/5/13) [TEAM ROOK]

Base: CM10 JellyBean
Kernel: Nibbles v0.1.3
Installer: Aroma
Source Sync & Build Date: 1.05.13
Release Date: 1.05.13
Release Version: v1.6
Packed full of yummy goodness, stability and speed, this ROM is intended to be a daily driver. This is not a test, experiment or buggy piece of nonsense. I started with CM10 Jellybean and added numerous enhancements to improve speed, stability and battery life. Installation is a breeze with Aroma, choose which options and applications you want to have - or run it again to install any apps you may have missed (without having to re-flash the ROM).
Please read the first three posts completely, then read them again before you flash this for the first time. Any notable bugs are located in the post below. If you experience any issues that have not been reported already, please post to the thread. Thanks!

Installation Made Easy:Just download the zip and flash it. The Aroma installer will guide you through a multitude of options, including different launchers, application choices and system options. If you prefer a no fuss installation, there's even an option for a pre-configured base installation. Lastly, if you decide to install any apps you previously chose not to, simply flash the zip and choose the application installer option.

Included Applications:Google Apps 4.1, ROM Manager, Root File Explorer, Accuweather, DSP Manager with BEATS Audio, Goo.im and more! The ROM also includes the new UCLK4 radio as an optional installation.
Under the hood are numerous script tweaks, system tweaks and enhancements to balance performance, stability and usability.

Nibbles Kernel:Up to and including Nibbles v1.4-S, I've been including the TFQ-LZ kernel by thomas.raines. Starting with Nibbles v1.5-S, there is an entirely new kernel dedicated to powering the Nibbles ROM. The Nibbles kernel includes a LOT of new features that cater to all users who want to get the most out of their device. I've included many popular CPU Governors and I/O schedulers to support a wide variety of uses. Additionally, I've made lots of other fundamental changes to the kernel to better balance battery and performance (well beyond what you can do with a handful of scripts) as well as implementing over clocking the CPU to 1.782GHz, Under/Over Volting the CPU at each frequency step and over clocking the GPU.
CPU Governors: intellidemand, pegasusq, gallimaurfy, interactivex, smartassv2, wheatley, interactive, conservative, userspace, ondemand, performance
I/O Schedulers: noop, deadline, cfq, sio, vr, bfq
There are two flavors of the Kernel available now. One with stock GPU clock speeds and the other with a slightly overclocked GPU. Check the download section below.

***DOWNLOAD Nibbles Kernel v0.1.3 HERE!***
Nibbles 1.6 includes stock and Nibbles versions of the kernel as part of the installer. The downloads below are for anyone who wants to use the kernel on any other AOSP JB rom (kernel will not work on TW ROMs).
Both downloads include all of the kernel features mentioned in the OP. The differences between these two is only the GPU speed. You can download and flash either of these at any time without wiping your system. Note that the installation will wipe your cache and dalvik, so after you reboot, let the apps setup and settle for a few minutes.

***Instagram Fix***
The instagram fix included in Nibbles 1.6 is from jee'sgalaxy's post HERE. There are five build.prop values that are edited (Nibbles only required two of them). If you do not use instagram, you can reset these values in build.prop to the following:
debug.composition.type=dyn
debug.mdpcomp.maxlayer=3
dev.pm.gpu_samplingrate = 1 (delete this one)
debug.sf.hw = 1 (this stays the same)
debug.egl.hw = 1 (this stays the same)
( disable dithering as noted in the thread wasn't necessary for the fix )
I included this by default in the ROM because I figured most people use instagram. Either way, if you don't use it, just swap these values back if you want to. Changing them back to stock isn't required unless you notice issues with video related to memory collisions.
Make sure you use a build.prop editor to make the changes, backup your original version and reboot when you are done.

Known Bugs:
Bluetooth may crash the first time you open it. Just relaunch and it should be fine. I don't have a means to test bluetooth, if someone wants to offer up a fix, PM me.
Things of note:
Double check your APN settings after flashing to make sure you're on LTE and it's all correct.
First boot will be slow, have patience. It may take a couple minutes. Subsequent reboots should fly.
If you set your CPU to 196MHz, you will notice some lag when waking up the phone. This is particularly true if you have a live wallpaper.
After first boot, hit the volume rocker to wake up the sound. (This should no longer be an issue)
I no longer support the battery mods from my other thread, while they will work on this ROM they might do something funky. Use at your own risk.

Change Log Information:
There are two places where I publish change information. In the post below and in changelog.txt on Goo.im in each ROM directory. Make sure to read the changelog information before you download and install the ROM. In most cases, the minor version updates simple incorporate patches that have been accumulated since the prior release. If you have installed all applicable patches, you likely won't need to download and install the full ROM.
How to read my version numbers:
I keep them pretty simple to be honest, the first number is a major release. This probably won't change until I move to CM10.1 when it is read. The second number is a compiled release, meaning that I recompiled the source to include significant fixes or updates - you will always need to do a full ROM flash when these are released. The third number is a minor release, as noted above it typically only includes accumulated patches since the last compiled or minor release.

Sounds legit. Thanks for helping me test everything out. I've been running this all day, beating up my phone and battery life and performance have been superb on the Wheatley governor. I plugged in twice to do som ADB stuff, so when I restart from a full charge I'll post up some full results with scren shots.
Great work and thanks again, not only for the bootani(still working on a hybrid) but for the tips on the kernel(thanks to m45 too)!

If you need help on the ani, shoot me a PM. We're just running around getting ready for the hurricane so I should have some time tonight to fiddle with it if you want. Better hurry though, because we might be dead and flooded by Monday

I'm running cfq schedule, wheatley governor clocked to 1.62GHz. So far so good. I haven't messed with the other schedulers much yet, trying to establish a baseline now that I'm actually done flashing new builds multiple times a day for testing

FAQ - README FIRST!
What is KingBeatZ?
It was formally known as PacKing BeatZ which was based on PACman rom.
What's the difference between this and the other KingBeatZ?
This is fully built from sauce with PACman as its base but with many modifications. Basically it supersedes it.
Like what
Linaro toolchain 4.6.3 and and 4.7.1
Custom made audio base
Optimization from the base up O2 Kernel and O3 rom
Linaro libjpeg-turbo
OTA Updates
SuperSU
Nova Launcher
Launcher2
Modified DSPManager aka BeaTz Manager
AOSP PA 2.99 - Yeah that's right
OK that sounds cool but what about this kernel you're talking about?
Audio Codecs and formats not used in regular kernel
XZ COMPRESSION
BFQ V5, SIO, VR, CFQ, NOOP AND DEADLINE - IO Scheduler
Hotplug, Intellidemand, ondemand, performance, user space, and power save -governors
OTG SUPPORT - thanks to CM10
What else? What about S2W and so on?
I find them useless and not worth the trouble especially S2W unless its requested repeatly
OK I GOT IT...But Why use your ROM you're just a kanger or so they say
LOL check out my credit page. I don't kang. I just simply do so much to keep track of it all. Don't believe me? OK, I don't care. I made this rom for people who truly enjoy a rom that's designed for the user not by my decision alone. Go join the other white knights.
Go make your own rom!
Join the club. There's a line though. While waiting please refer to the answer above - thanks again. It might take you a long time to comprehend it. No worries you'll get there in no time.
Where is the dmn source - Under Heavy Development - Why?
I'm doing this by myself so I'm figuring out how to completely setup the repo so people can build this for other devices.
Now if you took the above seriously or was offended, well...the only thing I can say is that take a long deep breath and relax.

But to avoid the hassle, you REALLY should give credits and thank yous the same time the ROM is uploaded. Not "oh I'll get it done later" or something else.

Did you not read the third post? I never said it was a hassle. People keep putting words into my mouth. I said I'm cleaning up my repo. With 120gb SSD, I'm very limited with space. [ROM] [4.2.2] [ No-name CM10.1 nightlies ] [ Standard & Linaro ] [TF101 / TF101G]

No-name CM10.1 nightlies
Welcome to the No-name CM10.1 nightlies ROM.
Features:
- No fuzz, stable CM10.1-based ROM for the TF101.
- Timduru's wonderful KAT kernel built in
- Can play 720p MKVs over wifi using Dice Player (and similar) if OCed to 1.4GHz (see details on OCing below)
- Support for battery-dock indicator
- Up to date, nightly builds, with change-logs.
- Linaro builds available too.
- Works with PPP widget from the Play Store.
- Native support for USB and SD-card dock storage.
- TabletUI mod available.
- Experimental TF101G support.
We'll do our best to keep it working, stable and fix issues as reported, but whoever feels like contributing should feel free.
Pull requests welcome.
No-name parts with extra features can optionally be installed from market.
If you feel like donating, you can install Straitjacket which is my paid app with some extra features. Plus it might give you a warm fuzzy feeling for being a good guy.
Installation:
If coming from any non-4.2.x/CM10.1-based ROM, a factory reset is very much recommended.
(0. Backup your existing ROM)
1. Decide if you feel experimental. Linaro or normal build?
2. Download latest nightly to device.
3. Download special TF101 gapps linked below. (Choose only one)
4. Boot into recovery. Use TWRP, not CWM, as CWM doesn't support 4.2 ROMs properly.
5. Flash ROM. (This also wipes /system and any mods you already have.)
7. Flash special TF101 Gapps.
8. Optionally flash trackpad and/or tabletUI mod. (For tabletUI-mod: Do read below!)
9. Ensure you wipe /cache and dalvik-cache.
10. Reboot.
Basically, the normal procedure for any ROM.
Updating:
Updating from a previous build does not require a factory reset and will in no way delete any user-data or apps.
Be sure to flash ROM and to reflash gapps otherwise you will lose your current Google-account.
(0. Backup your existing ROM)
1. Download latest nightly to device.
2. Boot into recovery.
3. Flash ROM. (This also wipes /system and any mods you already have.)
4. Flash special TF101 Gapps.
5. Optionally flash trackpad and/or tabletUI mod.
6. Ensure you wipe /cache and dalvik-cache.
7. Reboot.

Linaro?
So you are asking "What's Linaro anyway?". Good questions. To learn more, you can head to the Linaro. Since that is a big, big page with lots of technical stuff, I'll be nice and provide a brief explanation:
- Linaro makes an alternative toolchain which offers extra optimization-options not found in the "normal" Android build-chain. These optimizations should make the resulting build/ROM faster.
- But these optimizations are not entirely proven yet, and there is some debate about compatibility-related side-effects.
- These means that the resulting build may be less stable and/or less compatible with Android-software than builds produced using the normal build chain.
Is Linaro for you? It works for me. If you feel very conservative, it's probably best to avoid it.
If you still can't decide, you can check out this thread which dlumberg was nice enough to bring up.
TabletUI mod
In the ROM's download folder, for some releases you will find matching tabletUI mods availble for download.
Do note that these mods are created from the ROM itself and must be exactly matched.
That means that if your tabletUI mod is dated 20130428 and tagged "linaro", the only ROM that mod was created for was the 20130428 linaro build and no other build what so ever.
A mod made for the linaro build isn't supported when applied to the standard build and vica verse. A mod made for one date should never be used on a build created on any other date.
These mods are highly specific and needs to be treated that way. If you are mixing things and having any sorts of issues, there's nothing I can or will do about that. You have been warned.
On over-clocking
Don't use SetCPU or other third party tools. They are not needed, as the ROM has built in OC-controls. Using such tools may cause a conflict and in worst case possibly RRs and SODs.
To unlock the OC controls, go to System settings, About tablet, scroll down to build number, and tap that repeatedly until the system responds with "You are now a developer".
Exit and re-enter settings. You should now have a section called "Performance". Here you can enter a submenu called "CPU". Using this is the supported and recommended way to do over-cloking.
Issues?
Check the Github issue-tracker. They may be reported already. If not, feel free to report them.
https://github.com/josteink/device_asus_tf101/issues?state=open
Some issues are reported and closed, but have known workarounds:
https://github.com/josteink/device_asus_tf101/issues?labels=workaround+available&page=1&state=closed
If not there, you can also check or ask in the thread. Most issues will probably benefit from public discussion.
Please do not PM me for technical support. You wont get it.

Other questions:
- "These are the same builds you posted in RaymanFX's thread, right?"
- Yes they are.
- "Bleeding edge... Does this include cherry-picks?"
- No. Only regular CM updates which has passed gerrit code review, just like the official nightlies. We're bleeding edge. Not extra bleeding edge.
- "What makes this different from RaymanFX's 0.8 Work In Progress ROM?"
- This ROM is based of his work, but he hasn't updated his sources in a long while. With the kernel being replaced by a non-Rayman kernel and him not really updating it anymore, I felt it would be wrong to keep posting it in his thread. As we keep making changes, I expect less and less of his original work will remain.
Thus I felt it was time to give. Not to mention, now people have easy to locate downloads and up to date instructions in the first post.
Change log:
This log (mostly) reflects changes specifically to this ROM, and does not (usually) include changes upstream from Cyanogenmod.

Good luck! I will try it.
If the download site is incredibly slow now, it's probably because a world of Galaxy Nexus users is hammering the same server for the Ubuntu Mobile previews.
Bad timing on my part, I guess
Will try...
No factory reset/wipe data needed? Even when coming from stock/arhd?
Is picasa sync working? On my NS I have to flash a modified camera.apk to get it?
Thanks
Clearly better to make a new clean thread, your rom deserves it =) Thanks for keeping it up to date !

Josteink, good to see the new thread.
Did an upgrade from your 421.
It placed my files in a legacy folder, all seems to run fine.
422 definitely runs slower though.
Do you think that's a result of upgrading instead of a full wipe?
Also, what are you seeing in 422 that makes it a good update.
I really didn't see much change besides the phablet interface, which I'm not sure I like.
I'd really like to know your opinion.
Thanks.

I've had roughly the same performance in 4.2 as in 4.1. No major difference once the kinks and kernels got worked out. You can try a full wipe. I'd definitely recommend that, but I can't promise wild boosts in performance either.
The "phablet" interface takes some getting used to, but once you get there (at least once I got there), I've found myself to prefer it over the old one. The best way I can describe it is that after a while it feels more like a real Android-tablet now and less like a Windows-95 based tablet. YMMV.
Apart from that, things I like in 4.2.x which you didn't have in 4.1.x would definitely be the lock clock (CM10.1 cLock) and other lock-screen widgets. That, and abilty to add user-accounts, which sounds neat, but I don't need it.
Apart from that (on my phone), stock CM camera (which is useful on a phone) now also includes HDR mode, and they just keep on adding things on a daily basis.
I like that. CM10 is pretty much "done", and nothing new happens there, but CM10.1 has a lot of action these days.
You can feel it moving. You can feel you are on the bleeding edge
My 2 cents
work whit kat kernel ?
Re: [ROM] [4.2.2] No-name CM10.1 nightlies - Standard & Linaro
It comes with a forked KatKernel by default.
I see no reason flashing Tim's version shouldn't work, but I haven't tried yet. Will double check later this evening.

I don't know about Tim's version neither, but this combo does work on my system: no SOD in the last hour.
That's a first! Up to now the only kernels that work were Rayman's:good:

Sorry about the slow server.
Official Ubuntu should be up now and I've removed my mirror, so hopefully we'll get some proper juice back again

I'm obviously biased
Really though. Team EOS4 is very polished ROM and Timduru is doing an excellent job with it. Respect all the way.
Me though, I like CM-based ROMs and thought it would be nice if there were at least one maintained CM10.1 build for the TF101.
I think it's pretty good and it's my daily driver

General Information:
This is my continuation of doing AOKP PUB Builds for the Nexus 7. PUB (Project Unicorn Butter) aimed to bring Linaro toolchain and other optimizations to the normal AOKP build. My goal is to simply continue these builds providing releases based off current code. Current builds are using the latest (2013.09) release of the 4.8.2 Toolchain. Builds using O3, strict-aliasing, and other optimizations where applicable.
The original thread for reference:
Stephen.k.spear Orig PUB Builds Thread
Releases:
The target will be weekly builds on the weekend with a build during the week only where needed for bug fixes to be merged or some major change we just can't wait for
There are two Release Types
TYPE 1 is your traditional ROM Flashable zip.
You must flash gapps after flashing this ROM as it can not be included in the ROM zip.
Current Gapps: gapps-jb-20130813
Slim Gapps(needed for full Dark UI functionality): Slim Gapps 4.3 DownloadsTYPE 2 is an Aroma Installer that includes the ROM, latest gapps, and many other options. See Post 2 below for further details.More than likely any middle of the week builds will not get rolled into the Aroma.
Kernel:
I am currently building the tegra3 grouper kernel from google source (stock). It is the kernel that will be installed if you just flash this as is. This is a perfectly fine daily driver, should be stable and safe across all devices.
If you are looking for better battery life, better performance during gaming, or even just more control over various settings at the kernel level then feel free to try one of the other great kernels offered for this device. I will not recommend one, I will recommend you try them all and see which works best for you.
Installation:
Download rom zip and gapps
Reboot to recovery
Wipe cache/dalvik (full wipe when needed)
Flash rom
Flash gapps
Reboot

Midnight Gapps Project
Team BlackOut

_motley - KERNEL
morfic - [DER KERNEL] Trinity Seven
faux123 - KERNEL
show-p1984 - Bricked n7 kernel

of course to amarullz for creating the aroma installer
I know what I'll be flashing soon...

I am downloading your newest build now! Thanks! Have been using your PUB builds since Steve went on hiatus and I am thoroughly enjoying them. One problem though, can't seem to find a download link for the new "gapps-jb-20130301-signed". Could you post a link please? Thanks.
Wouldn't mind an inverted Gapps. Never tried it, but kinda curious.

Thanks! Also, since you have switched to the stock tegra Kernel, which kernel would give fastest performance? I liked the faux built inline with Steve's builds. I want pure performance without burning out my device. I play games and watch loss of videos. I guess I'm looking for a kernel that will clover maximum performance in games and videos, and will also deliver creamy UI transitions. Thanks.
BTW, in case you couldn't tell, I'm somewhat new at this. I know just enough to sound somewhat competent I guess. I have unlocked, rooted, and flashed both my n7 and n4 through fastboot. Never touched a root kit.

I'll add this type of answer to the OP as well when I have time to clean it up but here is the gist of it. I can't answer you.
Of the main kernels (regularly updated) you'll see for this device (faux, motley, metallice, franco, morfic), these are all established kernel dev's here. They spend countless hours on these kernel's and know them quite well. There is no way I could say to use one over another. Even if one is more geared toward stability and battery life vs gaming performance each may run differently on each device as the hardware is not exactly the same on every N7. Some can get away with -75mv while other's would have lock ups there. Some can overclock gpu, cpu higher than others and run perfectly smooth and others would see a random reboot. Even with the differences on a default flash of any of these dev's kernels, you then have a plethora of further settings you can tweak. There are voltages, clock speeds, governor, scheduler, and literally many many more.
Personally I'd read through each of those threads, at least the first few pages and the last 10 or so to see the current posts and tweaks the other users are making or their feedback. Try each of the kernels for a few days. You might get the feeling of a couple you like better or you think run a bit smoother for YOUR device with YOUR usage. At that point you can determine how much further down that kernel rabbit hole you want to go, ie. tweaking the intricate little settings that might help you vs the dev's stock settings. With all that being said, and all the variables at play in the kernel world, I can't imagine an answer I could give you that wouldn't be intrinsically incorrect. Hence, re-read the bold text above.

Ohhhhhhhhhh, i feel real stupid .. hahah :'(
I apologize and know what I messed up. I am recompiling it as I type and will send pm's with links again. Bare with me this is my first skyrocket build. If you flash cvd's kernel it should boot fine. But I am redoing. This would not have happened if I had the device.
Everything seems great so far. Smooth and snappy. Will test all functions and get back asap.
