Moving from rooted S-ON to S-OFF - HTC Sensation

Hi,
I (with a lot of help) managed to root my phone with the Viper S image yesterday.
I have now tried this guide to unlock it but unfortunately instead of an unlock code in the terminal I get a date... I am a bit confused as to what I should do from here as the alternative method appears to require S-OFF, even though it only insinuates this!
I do not mind loosing data but I like the fact the phone is working with this Viper S ROM...
If I go ahead using this guide will I be OK? Does it matter the state the phone is in now? Is there a better/easier method?
I would be very grateful for any help!
Thank you VERY much

Hi,
If you got a date ,then you need to use method 2 which requires s-off.
Using kgs method is fine.

Just a note to say thanks!
I got it all sorted in the end!

Noob Question About S-On, S-Off, and HTC's unlock

I used HTC's official unlock and my phone is unlocked, but has S-On. Is there a benefit to S-Off now that mine is unlocked? What is the difference between how the unlocks are? Sorry if i'm not making much sense, I'm new to this place and Android in general... I just got my sensation last week.
Welcome to Sensation
Don't worry, everyone's a noob at some point, I'm pretty much still a noob myself but as far as I understand it:
To this point you have unlocked your bootloader which simply allows the phone to boot with third-party software installed. In your phone there is a form of security check and the level of security is determined by whether you are S-ON or S-OFF. It's a flag at the radio level of your phone that checks images before they are allowed to be written to the system memory. So when you gain S-OFF, you gain unrestricted access to the NAND flash memory on your device, also known as root. With S-ON you can get temporary root but it's not guaranteed, with S-OFF you can get permanent root no matter what you flash.
Essentially gaining S-OFF permits superuser access to the phone, giving you control over all aspects of software and hardware.
If you like your phone the way it comes to you, all filled up with bloatware and stuck using only the latest version of Android that your carrier releases OTA, with a boring/crappy splash screen and boot animation (and so on and so forth ) then you have no real reason to get S-OFF.
If however you have seen some of the shiny ROMs put together by the devs here at XDA, or have a sweet custom splash screen you'd love to see every time you boot up the phone, or just like the idea of having complete control over YOUR phone and flashing what-the-hell-ever ROM/firmware/radio/other stuff you damn well please, then you should definitely consider rooting.
The disclaimer to all this is that if you aren't careful and don't thoroughly research what you're doing BEFORE you do it, you could brick your phone and give yourself some serious grief. The fact you're even asking this now is a point in your favour, there are far too many 'help me' posts on here from people who did something without bothering to try and understand it first. Knowledge is power and there's buckets of knowledge on this forum and others.
I'd suggest reading here and here at the very least.
Hope that helps
s-off means you may do anything with your phone,
you will lose warrenty at s-off gain it at s-on
as the other guy said if u want a nice toutch to your rom s-off it and install, if u want it still legal dont
Thanks for the info. I've been considering using an ICS OTA file on my HTC Sensation 4G, but the guides i've seen only mention S-OFF and nothing about the unlocked S-ON. I just can't wait for the official release!
On the other hand though, I also want to remove bloatware from this phone and found a script for such... but i can't seem to get any temp root method working. I'm not ready to jump off the deep end yet, but i'm tired of the unnecessary stuff.
I also couldn't wait for the official ICS release so I s-off, rooted, super CID, and flashed an ICS firmware and went to android revolution. Honestly, it's one of the best decisions Ive ever made. If you think your stock phone is running good right now, you'll be amazed when you flash it, it will run absolutely faster I tell you.
Though there are alot of risks doing all of that, it might brick your phone completely. So be very careful, read and understand everything if you're going to do all of those stuff.

Hey Guys Noob here,
I need help big time. I gone and mess with something I shouldn't have. I'm a first time android/touch screen user so bear with me.
I was trying to S-off my phone (alrady rooted- after several tries) but I downloaded the juopunutbear zip file on my phone. I mistakenly loaded it via the CWM recovery and now the screen is stuck on that juopunutbear image.
I have tried to flash my rom because I thought it was just a boot loop, but nothing happened. I NEED some advice please don't tell me I bricked it. :crying:

if you can boot into bootloader then you are not bricked
secondly what do you mean by juopunutbear.zip and from where?
edit:you said that you are already rooted
which means that you have unlocked bootloader from htcdev site am i right?
Yes it was already unlock from HTC dev, but I was trying to get S- off using the wire trick method. In reading the Jounutbear guide thread it directed u to a link which has the zip file which I should have run on my pc but I had mistakenly installed it from my sd card and now it isn't going furthuer than that screen. I now can't using the Jbear exe bcuz it not recogining it.
I don't really want to keep adding my nonsense to the thread how can I PM someone for help.

enable smartflash from it
flash the rom

I did all that but the phone keeps booting up with the Juoputnutbear image that point to the phone. It looks similar to when I was just rooting the phone but it just no picking up nothing but that.

that's weird
did you perform a full wipe(from recovery) before flashing the rom?
also as long as you are on S-ON use 4ext recovery to flash the rom
and before flashing the rom enable smartflash from 4ext
if you have done all the above then use a ruu.exe to return to stock condition

Well that thread seems to be a mouth full remember I'm a noob. But I will try and read that again to get what it really says. It seems though that it was a complex instruction how to get back to the stock rom? Isn't there a file for that I can download. I get to doing that RUU thing to see if it works tho

Hey guys good news
I finally got the phone to power on. I saw this thread that highlead my pro http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284273 but I was really got the details from another forum. I don't know if I'm allowed to post it so I won't, but I'll sum it up.
All I need to do was flash the boot image on my current rom (get this from the zip file) and also flash the recovery image from a backup I had and presto.
But I'll go and follow you guys instruction about enabling the 4ext smart flash from now on. What I want to know though is for some custom roms (eg cyanogenmod 10.1) do I needs to be S-off to install it?
If so I'm still gonna try and S-off this here thingy. Givethanks y'all

no you are fine now
there is no problem with juopunutbear because now you have patched hboot which is unlocked
you are fine also with cwm recovery
but if you still want 4ext do only step 2 from here

Try going to the Play Store and downloading SuperSU or Superuser
and install them. I suggest you try SuperSU first, but some have reported it not working. After you have SuperSU installed download and install BusyBox. Then download Root Checker and run it, if it says you are not rooted then try the other Super User app.

If what I posted before does not work do this. Download this file and place it on the root of your SD card and flash it via bootloader. Then use the Recovery you just flashed to flash this SuperSU.zip by chainfire. then download and install Busybox and you will be good to go for any rooted app.
Edit: If you get the following error message then go to this post to resolve the issue.

Hi Guys, sorry for hijacking.
I am a complete HTC noob, only had the Sensation for a couple of weeks.
I had an Xperia X10 before and the rooting process was so much easier!
Although I've been reading post after post after article after post in order to get up-to-speed, I keep going round in circles because I don't understand what S-Off/unlocked bootloaders/rooting/custom versus stock recovery is in the world of HTC...
Anyway, I'm on 4.0.3 stock ROM and all I want to be able to do is to remove a few pieces of bloatware, install SetCPU and be able to use Titanium Backup.
Can you guys explain to me whether I need to be HTC Dev Unlocked to be able to do all that and whether, because I'm not interested in custom ROMS (and if any creators of custom ROMs are reading this, it's not because I don't want to, I just don't understand enough to feel comfortable with installing them!), do I need to be S-Off and have a custom recovery instead of the stock one (and why??).
Thanks guys. Please go easy on me - I have tried to read as much as possible to understand so I'm not just posting because I'm lazy!
Thanks a lot.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300 is an awesome guide that you can read through, you do not need to S-Off if you're going to run on roms with the same firmware (3.32.X) as the stock rom is. I suggest you read through the guide and come back here if you have any further questions
EDIT: You must unlock your bootloader via HTCdev but I've heard that there is an unlock (exploit) that doesn't require this on the way, I can't say for sure thou but here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25993010&postcount=74

To be honest, this was the first place I looked for info, then it transpired that revolutionary wouldn't work with the OTA update to ICS so I held off and did more research. I'm guessing that, I for that part of the guide, revolutionary is working now?

Sadly it doesnt if you have the latest hboot (1.27) which I guess you have since you updated ICS OTA but there is a way to get S-Off http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1611977 using this method, it is a bit tricky but there are guides that explain very well how you do it. I used this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25202517 and it worked out great for me

looking at the date of the post 2011, I would say that it will not do the trick.... Went that way with no results.
When I get home I will edit the post with the link to ONE-X toolkit and some explanation on how I got my ICS rooted and unlocked. Although guide in the reference post is self explanatory and easy to follow.
The thing with ICS is, that it does not except some older CWM recoveries.
To be short.. Will update later.
Thanks Tester, much appreciated.

No Revotionary only supports Hboots up to 1.18.0000, if you are using a ICS ROM you have Hboot 1.21.0000 or higher and can not use Revolutionary. If you use HTC Dev to unlock you can do what you want to, go to here for a good guide. If you want S-off then you will have to use Juopunutbear to S-off, go to here for a guide on it. I recomend S-off but that is up to you as it is your device.

So... What you need to do is to D/Load ONE-X ToolKit... NOT Sensation ToolKit
ONE-X is here Thanks to Hasoon2000!!!!
Follow the instruction, it will bring you to HTCDEV website, register there and you will get additional set of instructions arranged in very step-by-step way.
Follow those and you'll get your phone unlocked and rooted.
Good luck!!!!

S-off and im 1.45, but cant root

Ok heres the deal. I got the MT4G slide in jan. I rooted it & gained s-off with the revoloutionary tool. When t mobile rolled out the ota, I installed & I lost my root capabilities. Now i have been looking through the threads trying to figure out how to root my phone. Wen i put my phone into boot loader, it says s-off with 1.45. the other threads that I have seen are 1.55 with s-on. Is there something that I am missing, I want to install cmn 9 or a ics rom. Could somebody point me in the right direction as far as what I am doing wrong. I tried the all in one tool, but I got lost when I has to ue the sdk installer on htcdev. thanks in advance for the help
Try pushing CWM via adb then use that to flash su. There are instructions in one of the stickies. You could do it all in adb of you wanted to.

When you go into your bootloader, does it say "locked" or "unlocked?" If it's locked, go to HTCdev and unlock it THEN flash CWM recovery via Fastboot.
If you are S-Off, go into bootloader. What does the top say? Revolutionary? Locked? Unlocked? Relocked? If it says Locked/Unlocked/Relocked, you need to flash the Rev HBOOT.
Ok thanks for the pointers. At the top of the screen it says locked. So ill try the dtc dev route. I got hung up on the part when i have to install the sdk & find the files that I have renamed. Is there a video tutorial of the process or is there something I am missing. I have experience with rooting, I have rooter hd2s, my transformer & several evos. I just cant understand that 1 portion of it. Thanks for the fast responses and the help, I didnt think it would be that immediate. I am just tired of not having ics on my phone, but I have it on all of my other devices, .

[Q] HTC OneX Rogers rooting help

Hello community!! I have been reading through the site for a couple of days now, and I'm still confused which rooting method to use since the At&t, and Rogers are mixed together. Sometimes the techniques used are interchanged, sometimes not. Well my question, or problem is is that I am trying to root the Rogers HTC OneX, running the latest installed updates, which are;
Android version
4.1.1
HTC Sense version
4+
Software/build numer
3.17.631.2
HTC SDK API level
4.63
Kernel version
3.4.10-g240d4d5
I'm trying to achieve root because I want to remove bloatware from my phone.I do not know how to achieve root to do this, I don't mind temporary root, aslong as it keeps the changes I made during that root session. I've read around, and some of the posts that are relevant to my problem are outdate by almost 7 months, with users claiming they're having problems with the method given, and these links were directed from a page that was only edited a couple days ago, so it's a bit confusing, especially when At&t, and Rogers are always jumbled around interchangeably. Anyways,I'd love up-to-date instructions on how to succesfully root this phone. Do I need to unlock the bootloader first? If I have to unlock the bootloader, fine(I know..HTCDev), would someone also provide me a way to unroot aswell, and lock the bootloader back up for a smooth stock startup, incase I want to sell the phone some day? My goal is to get root, remove bloatware, and be able to restore to stock when needed.
This wonderful community's posts also helped me root my Rogers Samsung Galaxy S3!!!

Now as for your software this could be tricky... This may or may not work cause you have the latest build from htc. The latest exploit developed is for 2.20. I cant think of any issues of trying this. I just simply may not take. Use at your own risk kind of thing though.

Go to that site Download the SDK from the site they provide you then

Go here and follow the How to Unlock the Bootloader (When your on HTC DEV.com skip to number 8 Just go to the SDK folder and press shift + right click in the folder click open Command windows here. and then follow the steps from 8) Make sure you are in Fastboot mood by turning off you phone then when its off hold Power + Volume down until the screen comes up and click bootloader then your good!

I tried running that program(TOOL] HTC One X (Evita) All-In-One Toolkit V2.1 [1-22-2013] [PERM), but my CID keeps coming back ROGER001, instead of 11111111, therefore the included exploit does not work, But if I manually unlock it through HTCdev, can I resume the steps through that program? Once you are bootloader unlocked. Install twrp I believe you need 2.3.3.1 on your firmware and then flash a superuser zip

X-Factor exploit is not needed for the Rogers version (or any other carrier aside AT&T). And as the OP found out, don't think it works on his version, anyway.
For all other variants (besides AT&T) just unlock the bootloader via HTCDev.com, install TWRP custom recovery, and flash SU or a rooted ROM.
Good to know. Thanks! I hate att more every day. im moving to canada

So, I may have unlocked the bootloader for nothing! I also realized my hboot version was 2.14, NOT 1.94 like I thought. Will there be any harm in trying to flash TWRP, and root anyhow? Will this brick my device, or simply not take? If TWRP installs, and I push SU, and then I get undesired glitchy results, can I restore back to stock, or atleast an original Ruu? Thanks
You got is easy! Just flash recovery and superuser and your golden.

[SOLVED] Help with SV s-off k2_ul 4.2.2 hboot 2.1 I think, read for sad story :D

Let's see, I forgot when I bought this phone, but I remember not liking the phone much, used it for a while for some light usage, and threw it back in storage..and forgot about it. Found it a few days ago, and since I'm sending my Zenfone 2 to warranty, probably gonna use this device until I get back the Asus. Might as well gonna buy a new phone after getting some cash together, anyway, stuck with this tiny device for a while. Just realized that it has only 1GB for apps, although it says 8GB on the box. Weird. So I decided to root the device to get rid of some pre installed junks. I only rooted some Samsung devices before, htc procedures are quite different. Unlocked, and rooted. It's running on 4.2.2 JB, k2_ul LTE version, and hboot is 2.1 as far as I can recall. And then, after rooting and all, noticed that I can't delete those pre-installed stuff even with the root, so just froze them, which I could of done without rooting in the first place. Not much on SV over the internet, but all I gathered is that on the bootloader screen, s-on needs to be s-off in order to modify or remove something system related from the phone, I think. Tried to do that, but couldn't find any methods online for Jelly Bean 4.2.2. Only option I think, is the rumrunner, but their website is kaput. As you can see, the dilemma I am in now. I understand, nobody cares about this phone, not even HTC even after the release. Just need some basic information.. where do I go from here. I swear I will throw this phone back into the darkness once I get my main device back/buy a new one, but for a while, have to live with it..
>Any way to turn the security off, s-off for the 4.2.2 JB ?
>Or just flash a custom rom, not that the phone has many other roms. I think flashing requires the s-off too.
>Or find a way to move apps to other partitions of the phone..i.e, Internal memory or MicroSD, which I have no clue how to do. :silly:
I just want some space on the phone, and bloatware vanished. Helps are appreciated !

Well, if rumrunner don't work, Sunshine app should work to get S-off, as far as i know. Sunshine is not free, it cost 25 USD.
Another way to disable write protection for S-on devices is this -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575240
But i never used this, so don't ask me how to do.

Flashing custom roms will also work on S-on devices. Just read and follow the guides how to flash in the rom threads. S-on will require some extra steps, which are usually mentioned in this threads.

You can many of these applications simply off in the options of the system.

Well, rumrunner worked. Their website is down, and while in the bathtub, got the idea about the web archive/wayback machine. Et Voila ! Thanks, regardless. I have uploaded the HTC Universal Rumrunner version if anyone needs it. Pretty easy.

Did you successfully root your SV? I rooted mine without problem, I still keep the stock 4.2.2 JB and HTC Sense.
I like the SV for its small size and excellent signal reception. The removable battery is also a plus.
