S-off and im 1.45, but cant root - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

Ok heres the deal. I got the MT4G slide in jan. I rooted it & gained s-off with the revoloutionary tool. When t mobile rolled out the ota, I installed & I lost my root capabilities. Now i have been looking through the threads trying to figure out how to root my phone. Wen i put my phone into boot loader, it says s-off with 1.45. the other threads that I have seen are 1.55 with s-on. Is there something that I am missing, I want to install cmn 9 or a ics rom. Could somebody point me in the right direction as far as what I am doing wrong. I tried the all in one tool, but I got lost when I has to ue the sdk installer on htcdev. thanks in advance for the help

Try pushing CWM via adb then use that to flash su. There are instructions in one of the stickies. You could do it all in adb of you wanted to.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement

When you go into your bootloader, does it say "locked" or "unlocked?" If it's locked, go to HTCdev and unlock it THEN flash CWM recovery via Fastboot.

If you are S-Off, go into bootloader. What does the top say? Revolutionary? Locked? Unlocked? Relocked? If it says Locked/Unlocked/Relocked, you need to flash the Rev HBOOT.

Ok thanks for the pointers. At the top of the screen it says locked. So ill try the dtc dev route. I got hung up on the part when i have to install the sdk & find the files that I have renamed. Is there a video tutorial of the process or is there something I am missing. I have experience with rooting, I have rooter hd2s, my transformer & several evos. I just cant understand that 1 portion of it. Thanks for the fast responses and the help, I didnt think it would be that immediate. I am just tired of not having ics on my phone, but I have it on all of my other devices, .

CM7 installation question

Hey everyone! I have a question that I couldn't find the answer to in the General or Dev forums.
My brother asked me if I could root his phone. I have experience with rooting, CWM, etc on my phone (Atrix), so I told him that I could, but I'd have to do some research first.
He did install the 2.3.3 update, so I understand permanent root is not possible yet. So here's my question-
Is there anything that would stop me from executing the following sequence and successfully getting CM7 onto the phone?
Gain Temp root
Rename install_recovery.sh to something else
Install ROM manager
Install CWM Recovery
Have ROM manager download CM7
Flash CM7
Done
Thank you in advance!
DK
Will not work, the bootloader is locked so flashing roms isn't gonna happen.
I dont think that would work... The shift is as locked down as the atrix was. I am pretty sure the partitions would still be write protected with only temp root...
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
I didn't even think about the bootloader possibly being locked. I always thought HTC had unlocked bootloaders until very recently (Evo 3D) when they released locked bootloaders, then announced that they would allow you to unlock them.
According to this page:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Evo_Shift_4G:_Full_Update_Guide#Flashing_the_Engineering_HBoot
Flashing that will unlock the boot loader. So I should be able to change my steps to:
[Edit: That site is basically instructions on how to install CM7 onto the Shift, and those steps only require temporary root to execute.]
Gain Temp root
Flash HBoot
Rename install_recovery.sh to something else
Install ROM manager
Install CWM Recovery
Have ROM manager download CM7
Flash CM7
Done
Is there anything else that would stop my process above from working?
EDIT - MY Atrix had a new bootloader installed when I did the OTA to Gingerbread several months ago. If the Evo Shift also got a new bootloader with their GB update, three is a chance that flashing HBoot could brick the phone. I'm going to start looking into this now, however if someone knows the answer to this I'd appreciate an answer
Wont work... We have an emmc partitioned phone just like the evo 3d. The o.t.a. to 2.3.3 included a new locked/encrypted bootloader. The partitions are write protected and encrypted. Flashing the eng hboot with a locked/encrypted recovery partition could equal brick...
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
Thanks for that info, I couldn't find confirmation either way on the bootloader. I was going to check check MD5Sums before flashing the HBoot just in case.
So can I restore back to Froyo and the old bootloader? On the Atrix you could do this (as long as you didn't unlock your bootloader) by using RSD Lite and flashing the stock SBF file. A quick search on the Evo Shift implies that I can do something similar with the Evo Shift - RUU back to stock Froyo? I admit I know nothing about how that works, I'll start searching now, and any additional info would be great!
Edit: Looks like there is no way to do that either, there doesn't seem to be a way to go back. Interesting that the phone got a new bootloader with the OTA update. My Atrix got a new bootloader with its 2.3 update too, but that was because the new bootloader allowed the users to unlock it. I also see that HTC's online unlocker doesn't list the Evo Shift. So it looks like my brother installing the OTA screwed himself out of getting to run any custom ROMs.

You got it man... Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... Htc went all moto on us... They even used the same style of 256 bit encryption... Effing ****ty!

Noob Question About S-On, S-Off, and HTC's unlock

I used HTC's official unlock and my phone is unlocked, but has S-On. Is there a benefit to S-Off now that mine is unlocked? What is the difference between how the unlocks are? Sorry if i'm not making much sense, I'm new to this place and Android in general... I just got my sensation last week.
Welcome to Sensation
Don't worry, everyone's a noob at some point, I'm pretty much still a noob myself but as far as I understand it:
To this point you have unlocked your bootloader which simply allows the phone to boot with third-party software installed. In your phone there is a form of security check and the level of security is determined by whether you are S-ON or S-OFF. It's a flag at the radio level of your phone that checks images before they are allowed to be written to the system memory. So when you gain S-OFF, you gain unrestricted access to the NAND flash memory on your device, also known as root. With S-ON you can get temporary root but it's not guaranteed, with S-OFF you can get permanent root no matter what you flash.
Essentially gaining S-OFF permits superuser access to the phone, giving you control over all aspects of software and hardware.
If you like your phone the way it comes to you, all filled up with bloatware and stuck using only the latest version of Android that your carrier releases OTA, with a boring/crappy splash screen and boot animation (and so on and so forth ) then you have no real reason to get S-OFF.
If however you have seen some of the shiny ROMs put together by the devs here at XDA, or have a sweet custom splash screen you'd love to see every time you boot up the phone, or just like the idea of having complete control over YOUR phone and flashing what-the-hell-ever ROM/firmware/radio/other stuff you damn well please, then you should definitely consider rooting.
The disclaimer to all this is that if you aren't careful and don't thoroughly research what you're doing BEFORE you do it, you could brick your phone and give yourself some serious grief. The fact you're even asking this now is a point in your favour, there are far too many 'help me' posts on here from people who did something without bothering to try and understand it first. Knowledge is power and there's buckets of knowledge on this forum and others.
I'd suggest reading here and here at the very least.
Hope that helps
s-off means you may do anything with your phone,
you will lose warrenty at s-off gain it at s-on
as the other guy said if u want a nice toutch to your rom s-off it and install, if u want it still legal dont
Thanks for the info. I've been considering using an ICS OTA file on my HTC Sensation 4G, but the guides i've seen only mention S-OFF and nothing about the unlocked S-ON. I just can't wait for the official release!
On the other hand though, I also want to remove bloatware from this phone and found a script for such... but i can't seem to get any temp root method working. I'm not ready to jump off the deep end yet, but i'm tired of the unnecessary stuff.
I also couldn't wait for the official ICS release so I s-off, rooted, super CID, and flashed an ICS firmware and went to android revolution. Honestly, it's one of the best decisions Ive ever made. If you think your stock phone is running good right now, you'll be amazed when you flash it, it will run absolutely faster I tell you.
Though there are alot of risks doing all of that, it might brick your phone completely. So be very careful, read and understand everything if you're going to do all of those stuff.

Hey Guys Noob here,
I need help big time. I gone and mess with something I shouldn't have. I'm a first time android/touch screen user so bear with me.
I was trying to S-off my phone (alrady rooted- after several tries) but I downloaded the juopunutbear zip file on my phone. I mistakenly loaded it via the CWM recovery and now the screen is stuck on that juopunutbear image.
I have tried to flash my rom because I thought it was just a boot loop, but nothing happened. I NEED some advice please don't tell me I bricked it. :crying:

if you can boot into bootloader then you are not bricked
secondly what do you mean by juopunutbear.zip and from where?
edit:you said that you are already rooted
which means that you have unlocked bootloader from htcdev site am i right?
Yes it was already unlock from HTC dev, but I was trying to get S- off using the wire trick method. In reading the Jounutbear guide thread it directed u to a link which has the zip file which I should have run on my pc but I had mistakenly installed it from my sd card and now it isn't going furthuer than that screen. I now can't using the Jbear exe bcuz it not recogining it.
I don't really want to keep adding my nonsense to the thread how can I PM someone for help.

enable smartflash from it
flash the rom

that's weird
did you perform a full wipe(from recovery) before flashing the rom?
also as long as you are on S-ON use 4ext recovery to flash the rom
and before flashing the rom enable smartflash from 4ext
if you have done all the above then use a ruu.exe to return to stock condition

Well that thread seems to be a mouth full remember I'm a noob. But I will try and read that again to get what it really says. It seems though that it was a complex instruction how to get back to the stock rom? Isn't there a file for that I can download. I get to doing that RUU thing to see if it works tho

Hey guys good news
I finally got the phone to power on. I saw this thread that highlead my pro http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284273 but I was really got the details from another forum. I don't know if I'm allowed to post it so I won't, but I'll sum it up.
All I need to do was flash the boot image on my current rom (get this from the zip file) and also flash the recovery image from a backup I had and presto.
But I'll go and follow you guys instruction about enabling the 4ext smart flash from now on. What I want to know though is for some custom roms (eg cyanogenmod 10.1) do I needs to be S-off to install it?
If so I'm still gonna try and S-off this here thingy. Givethanks y'all

no you are fine now
there is no problem with juopunutbear because now you have patched hboot which is unlocked
you are fine also with cwm recovery
but if you still want 4ext do only step 2 from here

Do yourself a favour and read the stickies in the Dev forum, then search the DS forums as this question has been asked and answered countless times already. You need to know and understand what you are doing and why or you risk getting yourself into a situation you will struggle to get out of.
I'm not an absolute beginner. I've already rooted and S-OFF my previous phone, the HTC Desire. I know what I am going to do.
I just wanted to know if the procedure to root this ics ruu is the same as before.
Thanks
If you know what you're going to do - then do it.
If you don't - read the stickies.
This thread is a waste of time, yours and others'.
You cannot S-OFF the default ICS RUU hboot - for that, you will need to downgrade to an older hboot (0.98.x) by flashing an older RUU for your phone (there are threads around here that will let you know how to do that) and then S-OFF.
However, you do not need to S-OFF to root the ICS rom - you only need to unlock the bootloader through htcdev.com. Keep in mind that this voids the warranty. After you unlock the blootloader, you can flash a custom recovery via fastboot commands (search the forum) and then flash the SU (or SuperSU) binary and app in recovery. That's exactly what I had done as soon as the ICS RUU came out. This is hardly a detailed guide, but it's a starting point, good luck.

[Q] HTC OneX Rogers rooting help

Hello community!! I have been reading through the site for a couple of days now, and I'm still confused which rooting method to use since the At&t, and Rogers are mixed together. Sometimes the techniques used are interchanged, sometimes not. Well my question, or problem is is that I am trying to root the Rogers HTC OneX, running the latest installed updates, which are;
Android version
4.1.1
HTC Sense version
4+
Software/build numer
3.17.631.2
HTC SDK API level
4.63
Kernel version
3.4.10-g240d4d5
I'm trying to achieve root because I want to remove bloatware from my phone.I do not know how to achieve root to do this, I don't mind temporary root, aslong as it keeps the changes I made during that root session. I've read around, and some of the posts that are relevant to my problem are outdate by almost 7 months, with users claiming they're having problems with the method given, and these links were directed from a page that was only edited a couple days ago, so it's a bit confusing, especially when At&t, and Rogers are always jumbled around interchangeably. Anyways,I'd love up-to-date instructions on how to succesfully root this phone. Do I need to unlock the bootloader first? If I have to unlock the bootloader, fine(I know..HTCDev), would someone also provide me a way to unroot aswell, and lock the bootloader back up for a smooth stock startup, incase I want to sell the phone some day? My goal is to get root, remove bloatware, and be able to restore to stock when needed.
This wonderful community's posts also helped me root my Rogers Samsung Galaxy S3!!!

Now as for your software this could be tricky... This may or may not work cause you have the latest build from htc. The latest exploit developed is for 2.20. I cant think of any issues of trying this. I just simply may not take. Use at your own risk kind of thing though.

Go to that site Download the SDK from the site they provide you then

Go here and follow the How to Unlock the Bootloader (When your on HTC DEV.com skip to number 8 Just go to the SDK folder and press shift + right click in the folder click open Command windows here. and then follow the steps from 8) Make sure you are in Fastboot mood by turning off you phone then when its off hold Power + Volume down until the screen comes up and click bootloader then your good!

I tried running that program(TOOL] HTC One X (Evita) All-In-One Toolkit V2.1 [1-22-2013] [PERM), but my CID keeps coming back ROGER001, instead of 11111111, therefore the included exploit does not work, But if I manually unlock it through HTCdev, can I resume the steps through that program? Thanks!!
PS: I found out my hboot version is 1.94.000
I unlocked my bootloader through the HTCdev site successfully. Now i'm stuck on actually granting myself root. I've used a couple of files thrown around here, but nothing seems to work. Even temporary root that keeps changes. Anyone?
Once you are bootloader unlocked. Install twrp I believe you need 2.3.3.1 on your firmware and then flash a superuser zip

X-Factor exploit is not needed for the Rogers version (or any other carrier aside AT&T). And as the OP found out, don't think it works on his version, anyway.
For all other variants (besides AT&T) just unlock the bootloader via HTCDev.com, install TWRP custom recovery, and flash SU or a rooted ROM.
Good to know. Thanks! I hate att more every day. im moving to canada

So, I may have unlocked the bootloader for nothing! I also realized my hboot version was 2.14, NOT 1.94 like I thought. Will there be any harm in trying to flash TWRP, and root anyhow? Will this brick my device, or simply not take? If TWRP installs, and I push SU, and then I get undesired glitchy results, can I restore back to stock, or atleast an original Ruu? Thanks
You got is easy! Just flash recovery and superuser and your golden.

[Q] need help with installing custom rom on htc sensation pyramid

hi everyone
i havebeen struggling with this for 2 years now. i have HTC sensation with hboot 1.18.xxxx that i bought in 2011. after the first year i have been keen to move to a newer rom. i have tried to look up inf in xda and elsewhere and got no where with this.
i have been worried about bricking so much that i didnt try to many weird procedures. i had even tried to go through with the android revolution installation procedure but failed right on. because revolutionary does not with with my device even though thr hboot is supported.
i badly need to move to a newer jelly bean based rom or later else my device is like a stone-age crap. i sincerely request some straight forward process / guidance of getting through this without weird, wire trick etc.
i really want to keep this device instead of buying a new device for no reason. but i dont know how to start and how to end. kindly help me out.

This is definately not the place to ask for "all inclusive help".
You should at least do some own basic researches or leave your phone as it is,
especially when you're worried about bricking your device.
There are so many excellent descriptions here, that could guide you to flash a custom rom.
2nd
If you are on hboot 1.18 you don't need to do the wire trick for s-off, just have a look at this.
If you searched a little bit, you'd find out yourself.
But even the wire trick is nothing "bad", I did it on 6 devices till now.
I'd like to encourage you to simply read/search a little bit more here in the forums before coming back and asking for help.

Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751187 to gain S-OFF. Don't worry about the htcdev part.
I did it on a complete stock sensation xe with hboot 1.27 or 1.29 (can't remember exactly).
Just use the temp root and rumrunner.
For any information read the thread first, before asking.
Also this thread should be moved, because it doesn't belong into the development section.

Also this thread should be moved, because it doesn't belong into the development section.

i went through the thread again and again but still find it somewhat confusing. I cant seem to separate the temproot process start and end in there. can someone outline just the temproot procedure and the pre-requisite for it ?
Does temproot require controlbear files ? rumrunner site says it requires a htc dev unlocked device. is that a must ?

I'm not 100% sure about the exact steps anymore, but you don't need Controlbear, you just need the temp root.
When you have temp root, run rumrunner and follow the instructions.
I said read the thread, cause it might be possible that you get the message that it didn't work, while it actually did work.
You'll get everything needed in the thread. Otherwise just ask.

if revolutionary.io method doesn't work then try to update officially
see this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672425
then try with juopunutbear or rumrunner method again

One thing you could do is:
- get your phone updated to ICS (OTA over device settings) to get the latest firmware/hboot on it
- HTC Dev unlock your device (nothing complicated, you need to have fastboot running)
- Install/flash latest 4ext recovery (once more via fastboot) and enable smart flash option
Now in recovery with updated firmware/hboot make a nandroid backup and flash almost every rom you like.
In first place I'd not flash a CM12 rom.

since you update to ics you will be able to flash every ics/jb/kk/lp custom rom you like
so should i go ahead with the official ics update?
It's up to you.
Might be you're just satisfied with your new ICS firmware.
If you want to go further, unlock and custom recovery is an quite easy step.
For custom rom s-off is not necessarily needed.

If you do the update, try again with rumrunner after it has finished.
Thanks. I updated to ICS and did a full factory reset. The device seems to be quiet smooth compared to GB though. The next update i do will be using what you suggested. Without SOFF flashing a custom rom.
When i get there i will message back on this thread. Going to test drive this ICS now for a while.time.
