[Q] How can i root after installing ics ruu? - HTC Desire S

Hey guys, I'd like to root and S-OFF my HTC desire s. Which is the best way? The only thing I've done to my phone since I own it is install the official ruu running ICS.

Do yourself a favour and read the stickies in the Dev forum, then search the DS forums as this question has been asked and answered countless times already. You need to know and understand what you are doing and why or you risk getting yourself into a situation you will struggle to get out of.

I'm not an absolute beginner. I've already rooted and S-OFF my previous phone, the HTC Desire. I know what I am going to do.
I just wanted to know if the procedure to root this ics ruu is the same as before.
Thanks

If you know what you're going to do - then do it.
If you don't - read the stickies.
This thread is a waste of time, yours and others'.

You cannot S-OFF the default ICS RUU hboot - for that, you will need to downgrade to an older hboot (0.98.x) by flashing an older RUU for your phone (there are threads around here that will let you know how to do that) and then S-OFF.
However, you do not need to S-OFF to root the ICS rom - you only need to unlock the bootloader through htcdev.com. Keep in mind that this voids the warranty. After you unlock the blootloader, you can flash a custom recovery via fastboot commands (search the forum) and then flash the SU (or SuperSU) binary and app in recovery. That's exactly what I had done as soon as the ICS RUU came out. This is hardly a detailed guide, but it's a starting point, good luck.

[Q] Regarding about revolutionary root

Im a noob so dont bash me, thanks. Also, I tried to search for something similar with my question but I end up wasting alot of time and just got me confused. Sorry if this was already discussed or something.
So here is my situation, I s-off and rooted my sensation using revolutionary, and thats all I have done. Everything else are stock.
By the time the official HTC ICS OTA arrives will I be able to download and install it without any problems? I read alot of topics regarding about root and ota but those just got me so confused, so can someone give me a solid answer? Thanks
Cheers.
For OTA, S-OFF doesn't matter, but root could be a problem.
Also, I think you have a custom recovery now.
To receive OTAs need to have stock recovery and hboot image (not 100% sure about hboot thou).
The best is to run an official RUU before the OTA.
This will prevent any problem and you can always gain root again later.

I am new to android and need some help. i both sensation before few days and i am trying to learn as much as i can for the time i have i was iphone user for long time and know everything about it but now want to try to learn things about android. i wanted to add some custom rom to my sensation but i just found out that i have hboot 1.27.0000 and S-ON. i have android 4.0.3 installed on my phone.
i was reading lot about how to take S-OFF and to root mu phone but i cant get all
as far i found out i cant do S-off because revolutionary don't support 1.27 boot. am i right about this?

today i found some other method with some wire but i don't know is that really good way to do this..
i need this so i can add custom rom like ARHD or something like that. is there way to do this on my phone or i need to wait for new version of revolutionary?

Hmm you got 1.27 HBOOT and S-OFF...
so yeah you can't soff now...the other thread you've seen might be "unbricking sensation thread" that's not advisable to do until you know what you are doing.
So there is still one way for you to install custom ...i.e. HTC dev unlocked bootloader..this will give you an unlocked bootloader which is enough to get a custom Rom running on your device...but remember using HTC dev unlocked bootloader may void your warranty..and there's no way you can argue with them if in some case you require warranty as they will have phone details logged once you do unlock from HTC dev....so try it at your own risk. Also HTC dev unlock doesn't give "S-OFF" but only unlocks bootloader but still you can flash custom roms if you got this so called unlocked bootloader.
Once you got the unlocked bootloader...you can flash a recovery..preferrebly 4EXT http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377759
Get the recovery updater apk on your sd card ...and install the apk....and then open it up and flash the latest 4EXT recovery which has smart flash on.
Remember to say "yes" when you are asked whether you are S-ON as this will enable smart flash mode.
Once you got recovery installed you can download the Rom (I guess it is ARHD as you've mentioned it) and flash it through recovery..remember to do a nandroid backup before you flash this new Rom...just to be safe in case something screwed up happens

Yeah try the first link to get unloacked bootloader...afaik no one tried this on sensation...but try this as he is saying it won't brick your device...he said it is a hit or miss so try it

[Q] S-OFF for One-S ?

Question to the experienced Dev's on this One-S forum - what do you think are the chances of achieving S-OFF for the One-S in addition to the Unlocked bootloader ?
I remember S-OFF took a little while for the HTC Desire platform and was wondering if you felt it was just a matter of time before someone figured a way for the One-S or have HTC locked us out permanently ?
I enjoy the freedom of loading Custom ROMs with the unlocked bootloader, but to be stuck on the original shipped baseband/radio feels like we are handcuffed using devices that we own!
Thoughts appreciated...
Not a dev, but, sure we will. Got it on the N1 months ago--
This thread may help you get the newer radio--haven't read all of it though--
S-OFF will come !!! I know it will..
There are several people on these forums with a S-OFF One S already !! but they came shipped like that, either by fault or a developer phone...
All we need is some dumps from them and a lot of time and patience and we will be there.... I make it sound easy lol..........its not !

Seems like a PIA to me, but according to this thread (and following the very long, very detailed How-To) you can flash a radio.
As for S-Off, who knows. I haven't seen or read anywhere that anyone is working on that.

That thread does not detail how to flash a radio. It simply is a tutorial for reverting to 1.53 Stock so the OTA can update the radio. If we could flash radios, we could probably flash one with the security bit flipped and have a true S-OFF. Alas, we're far from it...

Yeah, didn't read all the steps. Another PIA way is flash the RUU with that Radio, then root and flash the ROM you want. Sorry, without S-Off guess we're SOL.

Picking up the pieces, need a confirmation.

After reading countless threads about RUUing or OTAing to the 3.18 Jellybean software, I think I know what everything means. But just to be safe, I want to confirm some things before I try anything. I have never been on a stock firmware other than when I got my phone, and it came on the 2.20 ICS software.
1. I used the SuperCID method to unlock my bootloader. I've read that having SuperCID will screw up the update to jellybean. But, I've also read that having s-off will bypass the CID check when updating, making the update work normally.
My phone has a CID of 1111111 (SuperCID), and is also s-off. Does this mean if I flash back to a stock ICS rom and OTA up to jellybean, everything will be alright? After all of the info I've sifted through, my personal answer is 'yes, everything will work.'
2. If I do proceed with an update to JB, will I still have S-off and/or a root? I've looked at the facepalm s-off thread under the Original Development section, and see no mention of a compatibility or incompatibility with Jellybean. This is the first HTC device I've ever owned, so I'm not as familiar with s-off as some of you may be. I did find this from searching the s-off thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38197741
If I recall correctly, I was running Viper XL when I s-off'd. It was a jellybean firmware at that time, probably built from the jellybean stock firmware. My personal answer to the question is 'yes, I will still be s-off, but I still don't know about a root.'
As far as a root goes, I'm at a loss of what to look for. I don't see a thread dedicated to a jellybean root, but then again, I'm not as well rounded with troubleshooting as others.

S-off will stick until you manually undo it. Whether you ruu, flash roms, whatever. Only way to lose s-off is to do fastboot oem setsecurityflag 3. Root is software so it's set within the rom. All the custom roms have root by default. With an unlocked bootloader any rom that doesn't have root can have root by flashing su. Consider root as having administrator on windows. If you don't have windows installed there's no administrative access to have right? Hence it doesn't stick but is built into the roms you flash.
S-off eliminates security checks so you you can ruu, flash anything and there won't be any checks that say hey, this isn't the right device or hey, this bootloader is unlocked, you can't ruu..
Just make sure not to flash anything not intended for the evita.
Hopefully this makes sense.
If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks, this pretty much answered all of my questions so if I just wanted a rooted stock rom, I would just follow the steps in the root guide that involve pushing and installing the su binary, and ignore the extra ones that involve changing the CID?
I can't seem to find any links to stock rooted for ICS (it's a preference to me over JB, sorry ) anymore. My thoughts were to run the 2.20 RUU and root it, which seems like a valid option based on your response

Ics is obsolete. If you really want stock rooted Ics.
You're correct.
Run an ics ruu
Flash twrp, flash su

If the goal is JB, then I'd recommend the JB RUU, rather than the OTA. RUU is a much cleaner and problem-free install.
'yes, everything will work' is a bit too presumptive to me. You can never be sure that everything will be okay. Modding your phone always has its risks, even under the safest of circumstances. But S-off will prevent the particular case of a (virtually guaranteed) brick caused by installing the RUU or OTA with SuperCID + S-on.

I didn't mean everything as in it will be right out of the box, no errors or problems by that, sorry. I meant that the flash/RUU would complete successfully and I would be running a stock firmware again.
And like I said, I've never ran the official JB firmware, so I'll give it a try and see how the battery holds out. I know ICS had a much better life than other JB custom roms out there, but then again, custom means extra (most of the time).
So, maybe I'll just head straight for the jellybean RUU instead. My only concern is that the h-boot would update, and that sets off a little flag in my head with s-off problems (even though it was confirmed it would stay in place until I manually went back to s-on).

Again, I would never assume that everything will be "completely successful". Even running the RUU under safest of circumstances has its risks. People have bricked their phones running the RUU with a completely stock device. However, its very unlikely.
S-off removes the particular issue of a near automatic brick if you have SuperCID and S-on. There should be no other particular high risk factors, that are currently known and within your control (which is what I think you are trying to get at). You will most likely be okay. But its impossible to remove all risk. Anything that updates hboot and radio has the risk of bricking the device, if it everything does not go exactly right. But aside from being sure you don't mess with the phone or computer while its flashing, its just an unlikely random event, outside of your control.

I would not jump to the conclusion that ICS has better battery life JB (custom or otherwise). I'd say that quite a few people have had better battery life on JB. There are lots of variables at play. Simply RUUing to the newer radio might improve your battery life. Or might even make it worse.
Battery life is always better experienced for yourself, rather than taking for granted what you read from others.

[Q] need help with installing custom rom on htc sensation pyramid

hi everyone
i havebeen struggling with this for 2 years now. i have HTC sensation with hboot 1.18.xxxx that i bought in 2011. after the first year i have been keen to move to a newer rom. i have tried to look up inf in xda and elsewhere and got no where with this.
i have been worried about bricking so much that i didnt try to many weird procedures. i had even tried to go through with the android revolution installation procedure but failed right on. because revolutionary does not with with my device even though thr hboot is supported.
i badly need to move to a newer jelly bean based rom or later else my device is like a stone-age crap. i sincerely request some straight forward process / guidance of getting through this without weird, wire trick etc.
i really want to keep this device instead of buying a new device for no reason. but i dont know how to start and how to end. kindly help me out.

This is definately not the place to ask for "all inclusive help".
You should at least do some own basic researches or leave your phone as it is,
especially when you're worried about bricking your device.
There are so many excellent descriptions here, that could guide you to flash a custom rom.
2nd
If you are on hboot 1.18 you don't need to do the wire trick for s-off, just have a look at this.
If you searched a little bit, you'd find out yourself.
But even the wire trick is nothing "bad", I did it on 6 devices till now.
I'd like to encourage you to simply read/search a little bit more here in the forums before coming back and asking for help.

Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751187 to gain S-OFF. Don't worry about the htcdev part.
I did it on a complete stock sensation xe with hboot 1.27 or 1.29 (can't remember exactly).
Just use the temp root and rumrunner.
For any information read the thread first, before asking.
Also this thread should be moved, because it doesn't belong into the development section.

i went through the thread again and again but still find it somewhat confusing. I cant seem to separate the temproot process start and end in there. can someone outline just the temproot procedure and the pre-requisite for it ?
Does temproot require controlbear files ? rumrunner site says it requires a htc dev unlocked device. is that a must ?

I'm not 100% sure about the exact steps anymore, but you don't need Controlbear, you just need the temp root.
When you have temp root, run rumrunner and follow the instructions.
I said read the thread, cause it might be possible that you get the message that it didn't work, while it actually did work.
You'll get everything needed in the thread. Otherwise just ask.

One thing you could do is:
- get your phone updated to ICS (OTA over device settings) to get the latest firmware/hboot on it
- HTC Dev unlock your device (nothing complicated, you need to have fastboot running)
- Install/flash latest 4ext recovery (once more via fastboot) and enable smart flash option
Now in recovery with updated firmware/hboot make a nandroid backup and flash almost every rom you like.
In first place I'd not flash a CM12 rom.

since you update to ics you will be able to flash every ics/jb/kk/lp custom rom you like
so should i go ahead with the official ics update?
It's up to you.
Might be you're just satisfied with your new ICS firmware.
If you want to go further, unlock and custom recovery is an quite easy step.
For custom rom s-off is not necessarily needed.

Thanks. I updated to ICS and did a full factory reset. The device seems to be quiet smooth compared to GB though. The next update i do will be using what you suggested. Without SOFF flashing a custom rom.
When i get there i will message back on this thread. Going to test drive this ICS now for a while.time.
