I have quotetoday installed on my phone which basically adds a today plugin with a quote in. If I tap on the quote it randomly changes to any in the database. I have now installed pointui on my phone and want to "lose" the today screen altogether. My problem is that I do not want to lose my quotes so does anyone know of a program that does the above but not from the today screen.
I am no good with programming so cannot make up my own program to do this. Basically I want to enter a program and tap on the screen to randomly change a quote from file/database that I can add extra quotes to as well. I have searched but have only been able to find programs that run from the today screen.
Here's a couple alternatives I've came across. Never tried either of them.

Ideally what you might have to do is wait to see IF PointUI adds Today plug-ins support. Like to add them in with the clock/calendar/weather. So you just flick back n forth between today plugins too.
i got my vox a month ago and i love the design. probably the only smartphone design out there that looks as good as it does. But the problem i'm having with it is the performance level...i've had it lock up on me, sometimes it takes forever to load a simple task such as my text messages. I love the phone design to death, is there a phone that keeps this slick design but performs just as well? I know htc released a s730, but really? lol come on, its bigger, contains the same amount of ram, faster processor but still...
Or is it time i move to a pocket pc? do they perform better than smartphones? Or am i looking at this entirely from the wrong view, is it windows mobile thats causing this? is there away i could change the OS installed, maybe like the OS pocketpc's run? I'm not new to all this, but I would like some input and what everyones feeling, or if anyone is feeling the way I am. thanks again guys, looking forward to your responses
p.s. if you have any recommendations on devices i should look at, please let me know cause I might start looking for something new
One solution is to overclock your vox.
For me is very frustrating, slow opening of new SMS, too!
I don't know any other way to speed up your device.

ya i have it overclocked to 252 mhz, there is a improvement but why does it take so long to send a sms? not to mention the amount of steps that need to be taken to do so, open messaging, text messages, new, have to open contact list (which takes a while) then select a contact, select their mobile number, hit enter, then finally start typing.
I was looking at the iphone, and some reviews off youtube, the phone seems really responsive and fast, anyone with any suggestions? wondering if that might be a good step up?
You can start typing the name you want to write to on homescreen so the contact shows up. Then with left/right arrows select SMS, when you open it it goes directly to sending a SMS to this contact, same applies to the phone book and it will stay that way.

wow that is alot faster! didnt know that, makes texting a whole lot faster. guess i've been doing it the long way, hence the bitter taste its left. question, is windows mobile operating system more efficient than what the pocketpcs have installed?
For me that's really the most interesting thing in the iPhone, the fact that its interface is so fluid, everything seem to load fast . It seems really less frustrating to use. The only problem for me is that it is not as easy to tweak it as is windows mobile. Too bad windows mobile 7 still is a long time ahead..
But at least Windows Mobile 6.1 is due for the first quarter 08, let's hope that it will bring some improvements!
The thing about the MacOS X and the iPhone is that it's only designed for a couple devices, so it's very customized for these. Windows and Windows Mobile is made for thousands of different machines, so problems are just inevitable.
Speed improvements would be great indeed But my hopes are not very high

i think we've peaked in terms of performance and speed with the vox, the iphone GUI is amazing not to mention how flawlessy it flows from one application to another. Only thing I can give iphone a hard time for is it doenst seem homebrew friendly.
So that being said, would you guys recommend/suggest a vox ->iphone upgrade? or just stick with the vox?
Sick with the Vox and try the lates official HTC ROM, it's available on the XDA-developers ftp site. I fashed my Vox to it yesterday and it is alot faster than the original Vox ROM and is slightly smaller aswell leaving more RAM free to install apps like facade and PhoneAlarm.

I also didn't like how long it took to open messaging and start a new text message. Its the main reason I overclocked my s710. Here's a couple of other things that I came across while trying to improve messaging speed. Working in combination, they made a huge difference for me:
1. overclocked to 252mhz
2. place a shortcut in your \windows\startup folder with the following commands:
58#"\Program Files\load.exe" -hide "\Windows\tmail.exe"
81#"\Program Files\load.exe" -hide "\Windows\tmail.exe" -service "SMS" -to ""-body""
Opens the messaging app in the background on startup. Opens a new blank text message on startup. Requires load.exe to be able to open in the background. Since it is already open in the background, you can access messaging instantly. Whatever method you choose to open a new text message will also be faster since their is already a blank open text message in the background.
3. I like the method mentioned above of typing the contact then selecting Send Text Message. Another method that is just as fast is to create a shortcut to your blank open text message and place it in your Program Files folder (or wherever, I have mine as a shortcut in my facade launcher bar). The shortcut contains the same new text message command as above (just without using load.exe to hide it in the background):
49#"\Windows\tmail.exe" -service "SMS" -to ""-body""
Opening this brings you directly to your blank text message, just select your contact and start typing.
Hope this helps!
wow! god thats amazing, loads instantly :|! and its even more amazing that your a junior member, did you read this somewhere? if not, cudos to you, thanks a lot loving that small tweak ALOT! appreciate it. hopefully more people read this.
Wish there was a program that ran more tweaks to help smartphones performance
After figuring out tmail.exe was the messaging app, I kinda just played around with that and load.exe (found in "how to pimp your s710" thread on Modaco.com) to see what would happen. After that I came accross that command to open a new blank text message on some random tweaks page. Had to try it out with load.exe too. Glad I did . Simple stuff can make a big difference. My last phone was a simple Nokia 6133 flip, and I could access text messaging or a new text message within a second of opening the phone...not really that important, but I wanted that streamlined access to messaging with the s710. I think these little tweaks make it pretty close.
i've created the shortcut, but for some reason it doens't load....my question is when i tried to run tmail manually from file explorer it loads up the messaging center, and not straight into text messages (option 1 of the text messaging center). now i was curious if theres a way we can get text messaging loaded directly
now I get what you were saying in your PM, you want to go directly to the text messaging section of tmail.exe. Try this:
35#"\Windows\tmail.exe" -service "SMS"
Put this in a shortcut. When you open it, it should take you to your text messages.

I have an order in for a HP slate but don't get it until April! Don't want to wait and need to use pdf files and be able to run acrobat so I can do annotations during meetings of pdf files and then sync to my server when I get back into my office. I know I can do it with the slate as it is windows based and has flash. Can I also do it with the G after the flash issue is fixed and with a program that runs in the android environment?
I specifically purchased Repligo Reader from the Market because it was the only app (at the time) that handled annotations. I don't know if the annotations are saved in the pdf or not (and thus would be visible if you transfer the pdf to another computer), but Repligo was well worth the purchase price.
Repligo does not allow you to write with a stylis or finger to make notes and that is an annotation feature that is powerful when you are in meetings and then want to take those notes and have them on the page.
It seems like acrobat has a android program, but I can't find anyone that has used it or knows about it. There is a bluebeam program that looks great but it is for windows.
Stylus or fingertip annotation would be the bomb. Dont know of any Android pfd apps that do that.. if you come across one, post it here, because I'd like that too.
Repligo
Friends, Repligo DOES allow you to annotate with a capacitative stylus or finger.
I know because i use it for school work at my university. Thats the main reason why i bought my g tablet in the first place.
When you are in a pdf, tap on the screen onces to bring up the top and bottom menus. At the top, click on the 3rd symbol from the left (pencil symbol).
Click on draw free hand. And...wait for it...magic happens
I've only ever bought 2 paid apps for my G tab and HTC Desire HD. (Repligo and thumd keyboard)
Hope this helps
Yep. It wasn't one of the features it had when it first launched, but it's been added over the last couple of weeks. Also, they finally changed it so when you zoom in on one page, it stays that way for the other pages.
I've bought more than 2 apps, but RepliGo was one of the better purchases.
Huh. Never noticed that before. Thanks for the tip!!
Cool. And thanks. Now any problems with syncing files on my Windows 7 OS office computer to the Gtablet? Any procedures you can turn me on to in that area?
Just purchased it and I am not so happy with it. The free hand mode will not let you let the pen up to print words without asking you to save or cancel at every lift of the finger. Also, I don't see a highlighter. Additinoally if you have a password to open the file the program will just not let you edit the file at all! Do you have any of these issues?
Once you select the text, you can highlight it in the pop up menu...
Just ignore the "done, cancel" menu when you are doing handwrite. You can continue drawing without any interference. Once you click done it does not save. It just confirms that you want to keep the characters. The file is only saved when you go to menu and click save.
Of course if you wanna highlight empty space / non-text, you cant at this moment. Not sure about the password one though.
Thanks for your help! My problem is that I have issues with even getting the program to recognize my selection of text. I touch and then drag and nothing! I have tried with different files (6 to be exact) and one of them allows me to select the text but that is very unstable and not consitant. Really a bummer as when I am in meetings, I want the interaction of me doing this to be quick and seemless. Otherwise I spend time trying to figure the program out instead of figureing out the issues that are present at the meeting.
Can you offer any help? Have a request into Cerience but have not heard back. I fear they are just going to say that some file have this problem and leave it at that. I found another cool program called pdf annotator 3.0 but it is not avalible for android. I just bought this g-tab and learned and did the root, clockmod, vegan and love it. In fact enought to cancel my slate order as this has a bigger screen, but if I can't annotate, I'll have to give this to my daugther who facebooks and googles, but I will need to stay with a pc os based tablet.
Support from Repligo has been good. They e-mailed to say that they don't support my password protected files and that is why I can't comment on those types. On the ones that I can the program is still a bit buggy for me. Not sure if it is the app for me. Will need to work with it for a while.
Repligo works on vegan 5.1.1 but everytime you tab the middle of the screen to get the menu to freehand the app FC. Those who are freehanding in repligo, which rom are you using?

I use RepliGo and all functions work nicely with VEGAn 5.1
(Without the 5.1 Suppliment)
Preface: I'm new to Android and I hope these questions don't fall in to the "bloat crap" category.
XDA Thread Search engine is off line, and google couldn't find specific issues.
Thanks in advance for any insights provided.
I picked up a Transformer over the weekend, and I'm not impressed with the performance.
Issues/Question:
1.- I've tried every PDF reader (EZ, etc) and I get a loading or blurry screen with every page turn for around ~3 seconds. I've put the files on internal and external memory.
Is there anyway to improve the page load?
2.- When viewing any web page it loads square by square ~100x100px.
Is there anyway to improve the page load?
3.- When using the up/down arrows on the keyboard, pages are very jerky, but using the onsceen scroller it's OK... can I do anything to improve the up/down arrow keys?
4.- Is there anyway/app that allows you to select text easily? Click/move cursor?
5.- Is there anyway of opening a link in a new Tab using the kb? Eg Ctrl + click?
6.- Is there anyway to view the link URL (mouse over) before clicking it?
7.- Is there anyway to edit the hosts file without rooting the device?
8.- How do I open a console window?
Thanks
7) nope
8) i don't know if the terminal emulator comes stock, or it came with my custom rom...but basically, you just need a some sort of terminal app (either terminal emulator, or my preference, connectbot)

Return your TF and get an ipad2. It is infinitely better at everything. And you get to be an ass like that guy on the train who told me to my face I had an immitation.

Why didn't you just get a laptop? From your questions, I can tell that you tried to use the TF like a laptop. This is the #1 reason why people are disappointed at the tablet platform when they first got it.
Repeat after me. Tablets ain't no laptops.
Tablets ain't no phones either.
The tablet platform is a completely new niche. It is up to YOU to figure out ways to use it more easily and incorporate it into your life.
Imagine if everybody tried to use a motorcycle like a car or a canoe like a ship. Each thing is completely capable of standing on its own in its own niche.
I dare you to go into a motorcycle bar and tell people you can't treat it like a car and see what happens.
I have not touched my laptop for 4 months. I use the TF everyday. As engineers, we have to have astm and aci references everywhere we go for design and analysis purposes. We also have to type out a lot of reports.
All the other guys at work would carry around their books for references (these books are thousands of pages thick), their ipad 2 for entertainment, and their clunky laptops for work. I just carry my TF+dock. Think about that for a moment. Apple users can't imagine using the ipad 2 for anything other than fun and games. And on the opposite end, you can't imagine using the tablet like anything other than a PC.
Isn't it time you step back and reconsider why you got the TF in the first place?
Unlike the previous guy, I'll try not to be a complete sarcastic ass about some of the answers.
1) Repligo is a good one, although I simply use Adobe out of laziness. Personally, I don't have a problem with the 3 second lag. But that's because I also remember when a web page took 3 seconds to load a page of text and graphics.
2) I use a combination of the OS browser, Skyfire, Opera, and Firefox fox everything I do. Each provides a specific not-so-niche role in my daily use. Opera and Firefox have the fastest and smoothest loads.
3) If it's just in Browser that you're experiencing that, try one of the other browsers I suggested. If it's otherwise, then unfortunately, you'll just have to live with it. Maybe one of the roms out there have smoother operations, I don't know as I'm still running rooted stock.
4) Press-hold until word is highlighted or menu for "Select/Scroll" comes up. Proceed. Touch screen only.
5) Unknown. Touch screen works well enough for such a simple thing.
6) Press-hold until menu pops up. Address will be listed there.
7) That's part of the advantage of root.
8) You'll need to install a terminal program proceed.
I would advise that you run the full gamut of tests during your exchange/return period to figure out exactly what you're wanting the TF to do. If it's just because it's android, fair enough. If it's because you were told/had the idea that this is an ipad killer, fair enough. If it's to be used as a replacement to your desktop/laptop, fair enough. But it's up to you to determine what you want to use it for.
I got this a month ago, to the day and haven't had a reason to go back to Windows for more than transferring files to the cloud. Reason for that is that I don't own the dock. BT keyboard works perfectly well for me. For me, this is my be-all end-all. It's my desktop, my laptop, my media player, my video viewer, everything. Mind, I'm also very adaptable and fluid, so having one device with multiple programs to do the same/similar thing is nothing new to me.
Though truth be told, what do I know? I'm merely a student, a writer, an amateur artist, and an over-obsessive reader. I'm not doing anything major, like construction, law, or IT.
Thank you all for your comments/answers.
My EEE pad, isn't playing nice with NVFlash... I try and get it rooted some how.
1.- I tried RepliGo, still slow... same as EzPDF.
2.- I'll try anther browser... always been a fan of Chrome though.
5.- I would have thought implementing a double tap, press one area then tap link for a new tab would be fairly easy.
@goodintentions: I guess when you bought your EEE you felt like a down syndrome kid in a candy store.
I kind of took it for granted I would be able to load a PDF page < 1 second... waiting ~3 per page on a 120 page magazine adds 6 minutes... now think about the number of magazines/books you might read.
I bought the EEE for reading PDF's and web pages... they don't make laptops with decent screens... NFI why, but that's just the prevailing logic in Taiwan/Japan/USA.
Thanks again.
Am using mantano reader for pdf so far still the best reader for me and dolphin for pad beside firefox as browser.

Mantano reader 1.2.4 is better. But if you fit vertically ~3-4 seconds, horizontally ~1-3 seconds... and zoom to fill screen doesn't do anything but blur the page

FireFox 7.0.1: 21 seconds, substantial draw lag... half page with checker background, fills in quick.
Android Browser 3.2.1: 14 seconds, substantial draw lag... half page with checker background, fills in slow.
Laptop with Core Solo 1.4Ghz + Chrome 14: 3 seconds. No draw lag.
I was able to work out a hack which will allow desktop level flash in the Surface browser, even on sites that are not approved by Microsoft. So if there is a site that you like, but flash doesn't work, because Microsoft hasn't deemed it worthy enough yet, here's a way to manually enable Flash. (For those who aren't aware - only Microsoft approved sites are allowed to use Flash - its not universal - a site apparently has to be approved and put on a list for Flash to work - basically Microsoft censors the content that you see based upon whether or not the site meets their "criteria")
This hack is for the desktop Surface browser, not the metro Surface browser.
The downside with this hack is that, so far it appears that it only works for one website at a time.
Major disclaimer that you've heard a million times before - Tinkering with the registry has its risks - If you screw something up don't blame me.
How to do it:
1. Start
2. Swipe up from bottom and Select: "All apps" on bottom right menu
3. Select: Command Prompt
4. type regedit at the cursor and press enter
5. User account control appears - Do you want program to make changes - Yes
6. Path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
7. Make Sure "Internet Explorer" is selected then go to "Edit" and Select "New" and "Key" from the menu that appears.
8. The New Yellow Key folder will appear on the file tree - name it: Flash
9. If you click View and Refresh, the new Key "Flash" should be just below "Feed Discovery" in the tree.
10. Make sure your new key "Flash" is selected (the only assigned value at this point will read: "Default")
11. Now go to Edit/New and select "String Value" Name the new value DebugDomain
10. Double Click the new string value. Edit box will open. In the field: "Value Data" put the domain of your website for example "www.myflashcrippledsite.com"
11. Click OK Close Regedit and your done.
12. In the Desktop Browser Make sure the setting ActiveX Filtering is unchecked. (Right side of browser where there are the Home, Favorites and Gear icons - select the little round Gear (tools icon) and then Safety and then uncheck ActiveX Filtering
View attachment 1439531
Now try browsing your site -might have to restart the browser or refresh your page - its worked for me without a restart of the computer but you might need to restart the Surface itself (Right swipe, Settings, Power, Restart.)
If you have problems, make sure you use the right domain for your website for example www.microsoft.com not http//www.microsoft.com
Also remember this works in the Desktop version of the browser not the metro version accessed from the Start screen.
And like I said above, make sure you don't forget to uncheck "ActiveX Filtering" or Flash still won't work.
For now, to view another site, you need to change the DebugDomain value to the domain of your new site - pretty quick once the key has been made, and shouldn't require a restart of the computer. Tomorrow I'll see if there's a way to put multiple DebugDomain keys.
Sorry if this is unclear, I just figured this out then typed it at 2:30 in the morning. I've tested it on a couple of sites with success. But this is still very experimental, haven't done much testing as its too late - more tomorrow.
But I'm simultaneously thrilled and annoyed at this - because after seeing how well flash works on many crippled sites, it makes me really angry that this function isn't on by default and I have to jump through ridiculous hoops just to get flash to work.
Awesome, have a script!
Works for me with just a page reload; thanks!
I wrote some scripts to automate this (scripting being the easiest way to do third-party code on Windows RT); see the attached file. You'll either need to run the EnableFlash script as Admin every time, or run the SetFlashRegPerms script as Admin just once first. If you put the EnableFlash script in a location that is in your PATH, you can easily launch it from any cmd or Powershell prompt.
I love Love LOVE that Windows RT can be scripted, and that people can run stuff as Admin so easily.
Dear all, I have just found a better solution to this problem.
See the thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33414039#post33414039
This works on all websites you manually add, as many as you would like without the hassle of going trough the registry.
Wow I go to bed at 3:00 AM and by breakfast there's already a script for my solution as well as an alternative solution - gotta love XDA.
Thank you GoodDayToDie and Marvin_S for responding so quickly. I noticed Marvin_S started a new thread to fully explore enabling flash by editing the whitelist - sounds like a good alternative.
I feel much more positive about the Surface now - Lack of Flash support was one of the biggest negatives for this device and it was really bothering me.
And its nice to see that we have easy control over the OS in terms of changes and improvements - a big plus and bodes well for the Surface's future.
